Re: [IRCA] Norway to end FM broadcasting by 2017
If this actually happens according to their timetable I'm sure it won't just be internet content delivery. Remember DAB digital audio broadcasting. In Europe the DAB implementation is different from IBOC which has been a non-starter here since it's establishment over a decade ago. We don't know which way Norway will go. They could employ a system that the British use in the 220MHZ band or the system the Germans have in L band. Maybe the FM broadcast band will be re-purposed with an all digital platform. It should be interesting to see if this all comes to pass in 2 years. Re: [IRCA] article on IBOC
I am about 250 miles give or take from WBT's transmitter. I heard them switch from analog to digital on the Saturday morning of the test weekend. When the digital started I checked adjacent frequencies and didn't hear any digital hash. I am going to assume that the digital signal was confined to the standard 10KC channel when it was on the main channel during the test. The sky wave signal wasn't that great at the time. I admit this is strictly anecdotal and no measuring instruments were used other than my ears. I couldn't decode the digital signal as I have no IBOC receiving equipment. If eventually broadcasting does go all digital it would make more sense to me to put it on the main channel and scrap analog but do this after a long sun set period for the analog technology. Re: [IRCA] 30 years or more of skywave Dxing (55 years of radio)
Here is my am dxing history. I first started dxing the am band back in 1965 at the age of 9. I had been familiar with shortwave listening as I had an uncle who introduced me to that side of the radio hobby previously. I remember at a very young age checking out all the cool stuff in his radio room. Some of the equipment was bigger than I was. Anyway going back to bcb dx, in 1965 my grandmother had a radio dating back to the 30's or 40's. I don't remember the make but it had absolutely fantastic audio. It was built in a wooden cabinet with a large speaker that took up most of the bottom part of the cabinet. It was a tube rig and took time to warm up. On that machine I heard all the standard powerhouse stations after the sun set. Some of the highlights over the years were hearing my first Caribbean stations, Radio Belize on 834, Caribbean Beacon on 1610, ZNS on 810 and 1540, Radio Sutatensa in Columbia on 810, Radio Americas on 1160 as well as the Cubans, PJB plus the usual domestics including KSL and KFI. I didn't hear my first tas until the mid 80's when I heard Tirana on 1395. It took me a decade more till I heard another ta. It was the powerhouse out of Norway on 1314. All this was done from locations in New Jersey with stock equipment. Along the way I got my amateur license in 1978. I hold the call N2AAM. My interest in radio led me to a career in broadcasting and broadcast station ownership. I joined the NRC back in the 90's. In retrospect I should have done it much earlier in my dx career but it was just one of those things. I have been active in various aspects of radio since the 60's and it still hasn't lost it's shine and excitement. Radio is still a box of magic. Allen, You have a great location for all those trans-Atlantic stations. It'll be really interesting when you get wire antennas up as you indicated in your previous message. Re: [IRCA] The expanded band turns 15
Another interesting factoid about the xband is a short-lived station called k-truck. This was a station that was operated by the US military somewhere in Maryland. K-truck was a test of a transmitter that was built by the government to conduct psychological warfare in Bosnia. Before it was shipped over there they wanted to test it and as a result a group of volunteers operated it for a few weeks. The programming consisted of rock music with announcements. They solicited input from dxers and others interested in providing signal and quality reception reports. I heard it frequently when I lived in Metuchen New Jersey. I don't remember how much power they ran but it was widely heard by dxers around the country and farther a-field. Re: [IRCA] Off the wall question
Stan, I'm going to take a semi-knowledgeable guess on this one. Back in the 30's 40's and into the 50's police dispatch was done just above the am broadcast band and a bit in the two MHZ band. The dispatch was first only one way from the headquarters to the cars on patrol. Lots of the old radios could tune up into the dispatch frequencies just above the am band. Maybe this is a part of the answer to your question. Add to this fact that perhaps lots of the radios of that day were just designed to tune a little above and maybe below the broadcast band.
