[IRCA] WDEV-550 DX Test

2013-08-18 Thread Howe, Stephen S
A bit late to the party...but as likely one of the closest DXers to WDEV, I
thought I'd report in, too.

As expected, WDEV was heard well during their regular programming and DX Test
from 2358 8/16 to 0009:30 8/17 in Saint Albans using my Sony ICF-2010 and Radio
West loop. Regular programming consisted of sports talk, short ID, news, a
very detailed sign-off ID, then the Star Spangled Banner. DX Test started
precisely at 0006, with WDEV Morse code ID, telephone tones, WWV-like time
pips, and sweep tones, with two more WDEV Morse code IDs interspersed before
test ended just past 0009.

Thanks to Paul Walker for setting up the test and to Bob Welch for handling
verifications.

[IRCA] KCKM DX Test heard in Vermont

2014-03-22 Thread Howe, Stephen S
KCKM-1330 heard very weakly during it DX test from 1:04:30 to 1:17:45 EDT with
much the same content and interference as reported by Mark Connelly in
Massachusetts, using my Sony ICF-2010 and a Radio West loop.

Sweep tones heard at 1:04:30, 1:10:45, 1:14:40 to 1:15:30, and 1:16:45 EDT.
Thought I heard Morse code at 1:07:30, 1:15:40, and 1:17:45 EDT, but I still
have to review my tape more closely to decipher the code. Mark's report of
Morse code at 1:07:40 makes me hopeful I really did catch it at that time.

WSPQ popped in with a quick ID and some oldies music immediately before the
start of the test, and likely WWRV with SS and possibly WYRD with sports also
in the mix.

Like others, I found the sweep tones penetrated best. Another sound effect not
mentioned by Les but which I have generally found to penetrate well are what I
call "stair-step" tones, those which change pitch at discrete frequencies
rather than sweeping through a range of frequencies.

Review of my 1330 wee-hours 22 MAR recording:

Dominant stations: WRCA-MA in Portuguese, WWRV-NY Spanish religion,
WSPQ-NY oldies.

KCKM-TX DX test sweep tones best 1:06 to 1:06:30 EDT.

Weak Morse sounded like 'RADIO' at 1:07:40 EDT.

Sweeps again 1:16 to 1:16:50 EDT and back once more, poking through at
a weaker level, around 1:25.

Thanks to Paul Walker and Bob Souza for making the test happen.

[IRCA] WWXL-1450 DX Test not heard in Vermont

2014-03-30 Thread Howe, Stephen S
Unfortunately, the WWXL-1450 DX Test did not make it into northern Vermont,
using a Sony ICF-2010 and Radio West loop. Had the tape running between 10:58
and 11:10 PM EDT, but no Morse code IDs heard. One station with what sounded
like Broadway show tunes surfaced faintly very briefly, but nothing I could ID.
Disappointing considering the test made it into Ontario.

[IRCA] CORRECTION : DX Test: 600 WBOB Jacksonville, FL

2016-01-04 Thread Howe, Stephen S
Thanks, J.D., for this correction of the date of Sunday, January 10 for the
WBOB DX Test (in UTC), but this doesn't address the uncertainty I asked about
yesterday (below) concerning the start time of the test, when you compare the
UTC and EST, MST, etc. time zones. 0600-0900 UTC is not -0300 EST, as
stated in the announcement. It would be 0100-0400 EST. So, my question is,
which time period is correct in the announcement for the test, the UTC or the
EST, MST, etc., periods?

Thanks!

[IRCA] WBOB-600 DX Test heard in Vermont

2016-01-10 Thread Howe, Stephen S
Heard WBOB-600 during their DX Test on 1/10 0002-0020 EST with SRN News, brief
segments of religious programs and music, Morse code IDs, sweep tones,
ascending stair step tones, and telephone 'off-the-hook' tones with generally a
strong signal with minor occasional fading o/WICC and R. Rebelde. CKAT nulled
almost completely. Used my Sony ICF-2010 and Radio West loop.

Thanks to J. D. Stephens for arranging the test, Brandon Jordan for posting the
details, and Jerry Smith for running the test. It's not often I hear Florida
in Vermont, so this test was much appreciated.

Re: [IRCA] Audio file recording question

2016-01-12 Thread Howe, Stephen S
Unfortunately, Russ, Total Recorder can only be used with PCs, not Macs. I use
Audacity primarily to convert cassette recordings of my catches to .mp3 files
for archive purposes or to create audio files of manageable sizes to send to
stations when seeking verifications. It's actually very simple to use. For
me, there's nothing quite like the excitement of catching a DX Test or some new
station live, so timed unattended recordings is not that important a feature to
me now. Still, I'll confess, dragging myself out of bed in the early hours of
the morning is getting harder and harder the older I get!

Or, download Total Recorder ( you can get a limited time limited function
trial version ) at www.highcriteria.com. The ultimate license price is
quite reasonable. I find TR easier to operate than Audacity, and TR comes
with its own built-in scheduluer for use in setting up timed unattended
recordings.

Re: [IRCA] Audio file recording question--using Audacity

2016-01-12 Thread Howe, Stephen S
Patrick, I convert my cassette recordings from a small Aiwa recorder to .mp3
files using Audacity and it's quite simple. Although you are asking about
converting recordings on a CD, I know you have used various tape and cassette
recorders to make recordings in the past, so perhaps this quick intro will help
you get started when wanting to archive them.

Connect the audio output of your recorder (usually the headphone jack) to the
audio input jack of your computer. With Audacity open, select "Built-in Input"
(rather than "Built-in Microphone") from the drop-down menu in the upper center
of the screen. I have to select "Mono Input Channel" rather than "Stereo Input
Channel" from the drop-down menu immediately to the right when using recordings
made on my Aiwa. Set the output volume of your recording device to about
mid-position to avoid distortion. Cue up the segment on your tape that you
want to covert and press "Play" on your recorder and the "Record" button in
Audacity at the same time. Then just watch your recording being converted.
Just press the "Stop" button in Audacity when you're finished. Make sure to
save each Audacity "project" before recording a new file. Convert each
Audacity project to an .mp3 file by selecting "Export" in the "File" drop-down
menu and then select the .mp3 format.

[IRCA] WBOB DX Test QSL

2017-01-07 Thread Howe, Stephen S
Marc, Russ, and others:

I, too, have yet to receive a QSL from WBOB for their DX Test last year.
Brandon Jordan, who was our CPC Chairman at the time, contacted the engineer
once or twice after I inquired about whether he knew what the status of the
verifications was, but to no avail. I haven't heard very many stations from
Florida in northern Vermont, so I was really hoping to receive their verie.

I have to agree with Les that having the CPC Committee or a QSL Manager handle
the veries usually produces the best results.
