Re: [IRCA] XHDATA D-808

2019-03-11 Thread Jim B
Glad you like the XHDATA D-808 Mike. I recently brought one on vacation to
Dunedin FL and I logged about 225 stations in 5 weeks. The farthest was
CFAC 960, in Calgary Alberta. I find the sound at 3 khz AM mode is
excellent for DXing.Jim, back home in the snow

[IRCA] XHDATA D-808

2019-02-20 Thread Jim B
I can say my unmodified XHDATA D-808 has superb sensitivity on MW. The
selectivity is very good also. It also has excellent nulling capability by
rotating the radio. I much prefer it over the Grundig Executive traveler
for ease of operation. I got it on ebay for around $90 dollars last
summer. Jim

thanks for the info KAZ. I will go with two feet and hopefully not trip

I use 2 ft. Others use 3 ft and also get great results. I tried 1 ft, and
F/B nulls degraded somewhat and even fine tuning the resistance (Rt)
results showed a least a couple dB less null. 73 KAZ

Re: [IRCA] Station nulling

2018-01-25 Thread Jim B
Using a quantum phaser, I can usually accomplish what you are asking. Not
always a 100% null, but definitely enough to make the distant stations
dominant depending on the distance difference also. The phaser is best at
nulling closer stations in my opinion. Jim

Suppose I want to hear the weaker of two stations on the same frequency, where
both stations are pretty much the same direction from my location.
Is it possible that the incoming angle of one signal can be different enough
from the other one, that I can get a deeper null on the stronger
one than on the weaker? Or a different way of asking: Is it possible to null
the much closer station and not put as great of a null on the distant one,
which I would assume would be coming in at a much lower angle?

I hope I'm asking the right question, with my non-expansive understanding
of propagation. I hope to learn more about that whole
topic as time goes by.

I suppose it depends on the antenna being used, and how it's oriented. I would
assume you'd get the kind of control I'm asking about if the null
was steerable in the vertical plane, instead of the horizontal plane.

Mark Pettifor

[IRCA] twisted pairs

2017-10-08 Thread Jim B
Someone posted this information last year, but I would like to know what
wire they are referring to by the term "twisted pair".Jim

"Since switching to twisted pair my noise levels have been very low with
excellent results down through longwave. I never did A/B comparisons but am
happy to say I will never use coax again for my MW antennas. The only
difference when using twisted pair is having slightly different
transformers at the antenna and at the radio (twisted pair is ~100 ohm vs
coax at 50 ohm). As I understand it noise will travel equally but out of
phase to each other along the twisted pair wires but cancel each other at
the radio."

Keep forgetting to mention that something's apparently awry with
the power/pattern
at WSDZ (1260 AM The Answer). After never hearing it until a couple of
weeks ago, I've heard it any night I've tried since.

[IRCA] HSFB unid on 860

2016-10-22 Thread Jim B
On Friday Oct. 25 I was hearing Raiders football on 860. I think they were
playing the Mavericks. The game ended around 10:10 edst, so maybe in the
central time zone, but maybe not. Local ads and maybe the town of Anderson
mentioned. A lot of competition from Cuba, Toronto and a religious station.
Anyone know who this was? Jim in Springfield Ma.

I haven't used mine in that application Jim, tending to just bite the
bullet and pay for the FLG-100 which does the job for those antennas
right out of the box. Signal handling is good also. Really nice unit.

For the Clifton, you'd need a matching transformer to get the 50 ohms
if you haven't already got one, and presumably you already have some
way to run DC to the amplifier at the antenna. If you want to use
the amplifier at the radio end of things, then you'll need to be
more concerned about noise pickup on the feed line.

Hope that helps to focus things a bit. You probably won't easily
get better signal handling than the Clifton amp, but the FLG100 is
right up there, and easy to use.

best wishes,

Nick

Nick, I have a superloop of 20' x 40' and a dkaz of 21' x 84'. I am using a
homebrew amp now, but it has too much gain and overloads with images from 3
local stations on some frequencies.. The clifton labs amp gets my interest
mainly because of the low price vs a wellbrook amp. Jim

I think Clifton Labs sells the Z10040B now Jim. As amplifiers go, I
suspect you won't get much better than this one, very well specified
and tested. But for best results, you'll want to provide it with 50
ohm input and 50 ohm output; the latter could be a 50 ohm attenuator
pad if you have gain to spare.

What is you exact application? Tuned passive loop antennas for
example rarely have a 50 ohm output.

 best wishes,

 Nick

Is it currently alright to use an am / fm radio on commercial flights? I
searched on line, but no real info was found. Jim

Even at the current lower power, PJB is a regular here on Cape Cod, often
topping 800, as noted in this recent recording of one of their Spanish
 broadcasts as Radio TransMundial:
 http://www.qsl.net/wa1ion/audio1/pjb-800_20150320_0330z.mp3

Of course a nearly total over-water route helps.

I remember hearing PJB in 1986 on a Sony Walkman on a night flight from
Dallas-Fort Worth to El Paso, TX. Ten minutes after taking off from the
DFW airport, I noted something slopping over onto WBAP 820. Even that
close to WBAP, the slop source, which turned out to be PJB 800, was
stronger than 820. Right on 800, XEROK was way way under, even though only
about 300 miles away versus something like 2000 miles for PJB.

Given that much clout at that kind of distance, I have no doubt that PJB
was making it to New Zealand.

Re: [IRCA] Four new stations last night!

2015-03-31 Thread Jim B

Nice going Brian. I only caught 2 new ones this morning, 1590 WCSL
CHERRYVILLE NC and 1590 WHPY CLAYTON NC. Conditions were very favorable to
that area and it was surprising how strong WCSL was, but then it faded and
WHPY was even stronger. Both have internet live streams also. Jim

I had one of those magic moments last night. I've been too busy to do
much listening the last 5 days due to work (I'm allegedly working right
now), but for the heck of it I decided to do an SDR recording at the 1am
MST TOH last night (8UT) just with the 6-foot tuned loop, pointed SW-NE,
and tuned to the high end. No real DX, but I was rewarded with 4 new
 logs from nearby stations!

1240 KEZY, San Bernardino CA, very weak at 12:59am (0759UT), 1000W, call
 (new; loop), 277 miles
Just barely there, but the call was distinct.

 1340 KRLV, Las Vegas NV, very weak at 12:59am (0759UT), 1000W, call (new;
 loop), 193 miles
Caught the La Voz de la Comunidad slogan and a speed-reading of the call
 letters.

1470 KUTY, Palmdale CA, weak at 1:00am (0800UT), 5000W, call (new; loop),
 315 miles
Overlapping call with XERCN out of Tijuana, but both relatively clearly
 heard.

 1660 KXOL, Brigham City UT, weak at 1:01am (0801UT), 1000W, call (new;
 loop), 469 miles
This had been silent, but has been reported over the last several days and
I caught it without too much difficulty. The FCC site has a letter dated
March 23rd stating that if they can't prove that they were on the air
between November 20th, 2013 and November 21st, 2014, their license is
 kaput.

Re: [IRCA] Icom IC-7200

2015-03-24 Thread Jim B

I have been using the IC-7200 for mw Dxing for about 2 years and listen in
ssb mode only. With some decent (not necessarily expensive) earbuds or
headphones, it really produces nice audio. I like it much better than my
R75 receiver, which is very good also. Jim

The 70dB IF notch can be used with the 50Hz filter to take out carriers,
code, other tones within this 50Hz filter, sometimes separating stations
just a few HZ apart, such as stations assigned to the same frequency.
$789.95 shipped from Universal thru 3/31. For the best selectivity at the
lowest cost, if someone does not want to be hooked up to a computer, this
is the best deal I can ever remember hearing about. There is a Yahoo IC-7200
group that has the forum archived messages, including the
 description/review from 6-7 years ago.
You have to join to read messages ask questions, etc, but they'll get
back to you in a fraction of a day, assuming all goes the same as it did
for me. 73 all, George S., MN

Chris,

That I did not know. The tech I talked to at the time told me that Drake
would continue to repair the R8s until they could not get the parts. But at
least John Kriner is continuing with the repairs. Hopefully mine will last
many more years. It lasted 19 years before I got it repaired and that was
2011. I guess it has been 4 years now. Time flies. The R75 seems like the
best choice now, unless a DXer wants to spend a mint, if they want an
analog receiver.
Patrick

I have an R75 and it is quite good on mw, but for an alternative, my Icom
IC7200 is better. The sound is clearer, it has variable band width filters
and a great manual notch filter. Currently the IC7200 is selling for about
$120 more than the R75, but it is well worth the extra money. Jim

Rick and Paul, thanks for listening. I guess it's Mansfield and not
Minnesota (given that it struck me as odd to have anyone say Minnesota
area. WMAN is a common enough visitor but that's one less unresolved
 catch..
WRDN 1430 WI Durand is new here. Hard to get much with KQZQ dominating
when anything is coming in from the west (and already working underneath
 strong semi-local CHKT).
Paul, I don't collect QSLs anymore, not since the early 80s. But thanks
 for thinking of that.

I have two of your unIDs solved, Saul... :) 1400 -- the ad is for the
Richland Academy, and at the :10 mark, you can hear Mansfield area. So
it's WMAN in Ohio. 1430 -- the AM 1340 KROS in Clinton IA is an in-show
plug for KROS, which carries It's Polka Time! with host Craig Ebelon
Sundays. That is the syndicated polka program to which you were tuned in
at the time. I went to the show's website, and, lo and behold, WRDN
