Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] OT Light bulbs

2013-12-31 Thread Mike Sanburn
Good observation. An incandescent light bulb does have striking similarities to
those vacuum tubes from years gone by. They say that much of the energy given
off by classic bulbs is wasted as heat. On the other hand, many folks who use
the LED lights complain of headaches from the brightness. ms

Every time I go shopping I pick up a few incandescents, I think LED's are
worse than flourescents. I don't care for the bright white light from either
compact florescents or LEDS, I like the good old warm yellow glow of a
filament in a bulb, especially like the red glow of a filament in a tube,

CQ has announced it is combining Popular Communications, World Radio, and
CQ VHF into a single digital publication to be called CQ Plus starting in
February. The print editions of PopComm and CQ VHF will be phased out and
  World Radio will disappear totally.

At least this explains the huge mystery of what is going on at CQ (as we
discussed at the holiday party). I guess CQ was spread too thin with too
many digital publications to manage. Maybe this will work but I think, if
I understand it, there will now be just one digital subscription to CQ
Magazine which will include CQ plus and maybe a print edition of CQ
  without Digital Plus.

Bruce will you be staying on as a columnist for CQ Plus? I certainly hope
so as it would be a huge loss if your column were to disappear.

  Merry Christmas and HNY all!

I've been recently wondering about this myself (short-radial efficiency, or
lack thereof), but more from the standpoint of low-power part 15 transmitting
setups. One example I'm thinking of is such that the total length of the
antenna AND all ground radials is 3 meters, and does it make much difference
if you use a base-fed radiator with radials vs a center-fed segmented short
dipole without radials. (The rule in 15.219 specifies the antenna,
transmission line, and ground lead cannot exceed 3 meters.) There's other
scenarios I'm wondering about, but I'll leave them off as I think it's beyond
 the scope of this list.

As for KFI, I believe the original tower was there long before the industrial
complex was built. So, I think there could be ground radials there already,
and the new tower was hooked up to them? Or maybe they have another way of
grounding it. KFI *is* a few dB weaker at my house than KNX, in spite of
being 12 miles closer (99 vs 111). I think it's primarily the partial
saltwater path for KNX in my case, though. At a friend's house in Moreno
Valley, as well as at my grandma's house in San Gabriel, KFI is considerably
 stronger, like 10-15 dB.

There is a very efficient station that I believe doesn't have ground radials
 - 1530 KFBK in Sacramento, CA. Also I suspect 1500 KSTP St Paul, MN's
daytime site may also not have ground radials, but I'm not totally positive
 on that one.

As Dennis (and others) pointed out with Wikipedia links, KCBS/KQW was
testing in 1909, though they were using experimental calls at the time.
There was also a Canadian Marconi station on the air before KDKA. The
first license granted in the USA by the Department of Commerce was to KDKA,
but they weren't the first on the air.

That was my rationale for counting CIAO in 1991, something I'd ordinarily

Saul, I don't count call changes as new stations, either. And, in fact,
I only count frequency changes as new stations IF a new station comes on
the old station's previous frequency and I manage to hear both (example:
me hearing KIDZ-1510 Independence, MO and KCCV-760 Overland Park, KS in
1991, after having previously logged KCCV on 1510 three years prior -- in
my logbook I make this notation under KCCV-760: Originally heard on 1510
   on 4/9/1988).

What you have here is a situation much like WNWI-1080's in 1998.
WPOK-1080 in Pontiac, IL went silent, and WNWI-1080 in Valparaiso, IN
moved its CoL to Oak Lawn, IL, about 75 miles to north of Pontiac (the
difference being, of course, that there wasn't a frequency chance
involved, like WKPR moving from 1420 to 1440). In my Iowa City logbook,
I have WPOK and WNWI listed as two separate loggings since they were
   separate entities to begin with.

One could also face a dilemma with wondering how to count CJFT-530 Fort
Erie, ON and CIAO-530 Brampton, ON, since CIAO took over CJFT's spot on
the dial, even though their transmitter sites weren't all that far apart.
Fortunately, I didn't have to deal with that, since I was lucky enough
to get CIAO on its previous 790 frequency in early 1991, just months
   before it moved to 530.

I heard WKPR Kalamazoo on 1440 this morning. I've previously logged WDOW
in nearby Dowagiac but had never yet logged WKPR till now.

I don't count call changes. But I'm not sure what this situation
represents. This info from Wikipedia is the best summary I've found thus
far to describe the situation. Curious for any opinions...with thanks.

WDOW (1440 AM) was a radio station licensed to Dowagiac, Michigan,
broadcasting a sports radio format. According to Michguide.com, Kalamazoo
Broadcasting (aka Kuiper Broadcasting), owner of WKPR AM 1420 Kalamazoo,
is paying $80,000 to Langford Broadcasting as part of an agreement that
would take WDOW off the air permanently and have WKPR move to AM 1440 and
increase power in November 2010. On March 24, 2011, the Federal
Communications Commission cancelled WDOW's license and deleted the call
   sign from its database.

If that was KJNP, it would be the catch of the century! More likely, the

  silent station.

Not that KJNP is entirely impossible though. It has been heard on the East
Coast of the USA as recently as a year or two ago (on a DX expedition in
northern Maine). I believe George Sherman in Minneapolis heard it back in
the 80s during a DX test. Still, in this day and age it would require a
large amount of land and phased beverages, or a set up such as Neil
Kazaross has in Illinois and Wisconsin.

So the question remains who was it? You don't give much information such
as time of day or interfering stations or equipment used. The 800 pound
gorilla in the room is WWVA. Where were they? You would certainly want to
rule them out before any others. After that, other stations which should be
at least somewhat regular in your location would be Tulsa, Davenport and
possibly Jackson Minnesota which seems to get out pretty well. Although the
South Carolina beachside station WDEK is a daytimer, they can often be
heard accidentally on the air at night. Certainly all of these should be
ruled out before any thought of this being Alaska.

Keep monitoring the frequency and give us as many details as you can, and
  the information is helpful.

There is no substitute for opening an envelope and seeing a nice new QSL card
or verification letter. The QSL cards made for KRSN 1490 look terrific. I'm
happy to have one in my collection. Many thanks to the Mr. Westfall and the
staff at KRSN for the bumper stickers etc...that they sent to Billings for our
next radio club convention. The 50th anniversary is going to be a blast.

to all their information online. It's always worth the extra effort to get that
prized verification for your catch. ---Mike Sanburn

While trying to squeeze as much DX as possible from an unusually
south-favouring night, I landed on 1210 kHz around 0600 UTC (1:00 AM) where,
instead of the regular country-formatted sounds of KGYN in Guymon, OK, I was
surprised with Spanish M/F religious chatter.

The signal strength of this UNID station was fairly strong, but the
modulation was such that the resulting sound to to 60-year-old ears was
 somewhat 'muddy.'

Based on station lists I have close to me, I'm guessing this could have been
KUBR in San Juan (Hidalgo County), TX.

It's been on my 'Most Wanted' list for over a decade now, but with nothing
more than a hunch to base the ID on, well, it's still on that list.

Nice to know, though, that there really IS a chance of getting a real ID and
 some verifiable copy from them!!

states will be #49 and #50? Unless my yahoo assemblyman and state senator

I'd like to believe this is a part 15 station, the owner had a whole

honest, it wouldnt surprise me/I wouldn't put it past him to stretch the
truth about being #1 or stretch the truth about being legal.

 Hi Guys:

After spending the Summer hitting the FM and TV Dials, I finally logged my
first new AM BCB ULR Station of the New Season last night. We had Torrential
Rains and Thunderstorms passing through here starting around 7 PM , and
continued right through the night. I woke up at 3 AM due to the noise from
the Heavy Rain beating on the Roof!! After poking my head outside to see what
the H$%# was going on, (and quickly retreating) for some reason I figured,
now would be a good time to look around the AM BAND.since I was awake
 anyway!

End result...A New Station for both the ULR and OVERALL LOGS!!! Right in the
 middle of a Storm!!!

So.with the new one in the Log, I guess the Bug has bitten, and I'll have
to get back to the AM ULR Dials and see what else I can add...

Re: [IRCA] Fwd: Topband: WLW

2013-09-17 Thread Mike Sanburn
Great story! I'd love to visit WLW somedayMike Sanburn

 Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2013 05:02:04 +
 To: irca@hard-core-dx.com
 From: n...@ieee.org
 Subject: [IRCA] Fwd: Topband: WLW

There's been some discussion of WLW on the Topband list over the last
few days. Try this on for size: (make that supersize, hi)

One Sunday at the close of the Dayton Hamvention about 40 years ago, some
Cincinnati friends arranged for a tour of Gray's Radio Museum, The Voice of
America installation and WLW, all in or near Mason, Ohio. A bunch of us
got back to Illinois late that evening with unforgettable memories... and
 about 100 pictures.

I have told the stories of that wonderful day many times. The wildest
stories were from the WLW-RCA 500 KW station. Our guide was an expert on the
subject. The original control console was moved over to a side wall, but it
was still powered up... likely for the entertainment of visitors. The two
experimental calls issued to Crosley were emblazoned on some controls. They
were W8XO W8XAL as I remember. BTW, my long time friend Dave, one of those
guys from Cincinnati now holds one of those calls. Ask him about when
 Skip was in.

As we walked along the elevated walkway in front of the stages of the
transmitter, we were awed by the 6 foot diameter pi wound
 coupling coils with
Faraday shields and we noticed that there were as many water guages and
valves as there were meters and controls. Each of the three final stages was
water cooled and a fountain in the center of a small lake outside cooled the
 water.

Each final stage was about 8 feet wide and had a metal door you could walk
through. Our guide stopped at that point in the tour as we gazed at a huge
ammeter with a 150 amp full scale. What's this, someone asked.

He told us it was put in for Crosley who got a bug in his butt to see what
the rig would really do. The meter showed the total current on the three
finals. One night he cranked it up as far as it would go. Keep in mind, the
voltage on the finals was 17,500 volts, as I remember. He got that meter up
to 100 amps. Do the math. He burnt up some local fences that night.

Of course, 13 transmitters (with plug-in coils) each running 220,000 watts
simultaneously on several bands down the road at VOA was astonishing, but
that 1,700,000 watts at WLW was stuck in our minds all the way home that
night. We were TopBand guys, afterall!

I'm noting KDIS 1110 Pasadena (Radio Disney) off the air right now (Friday
afternoon 9/6 at 1:15 PM PDT/ 1615 EDT) There have been power outages all over
SoCal over the last 24 hours, but mostly out towards Riverside county
(heatwave, lightning, etc...) Not sure what the cause is here. Loud

Sorry that you lost the bidding.('Don't know who the lucky winner is-I already

interested in the SRF-M40W that I saw on there but 'will have to shop for one

So I was watching an SRF-42 on ebay that was sitting at $25 with no bids. I
put a bid in with a few minutes to go...then with ~10 seconds left got
outbid. I increased my bid, but it wasn't enough. :/ I couldn't afford to go
much over $30-35, and it went for $44.75. (Apparently a third person also bid
on it.) I'm curious who (if anyone here) scored? Also anyone know where I can
get one within my price range (or the price they originally sold for in RS
stores)? Or better yet, one the same size under $50 with digital tuning that
combines the audio bandwidth of the SRF-42 with better selectivity than a
Tecsun DSP radio (there are stations I want to hear whose
heterodyned-with-another-radio's-LO carriers are obliterated with splatter
10kHz away on my Tecsuns even in the ±1kHz BW setting), forces stereo decode
on weak and non-stereo signals (like the SRF-42) and empty/between channels
(42 fails here) and has a low enough internal noise floor so a 5 uV/m
signal (maximum groundwave overlap of a co-channel Class A's protected
0.1mV/m contour) would be nearly armchair copy. :)

Has anybody listened to the audio clip of the test? The WBT signal goes to
digital near the end of the clip, starting with the CBS top-of-hour bong
and into the newscast. Yes, the sudden drop to near-zero noise is
impressive... but the actual SOUND quality is gawd-awful, like an especially
bad webstream. Sure, it's got more high end than the analog signal--but
it's gargly, hashy, artifact-ridden, and nearly unlistenable. The analog,
while bandwidth-limited, is MUCH more pleasant to listen to! FM-quality my
 foot (and various other extremities)!

The standards format on KOY no longer exists.
 Everything else is status quo.
The confusing thing is that they're referring to KOY as 1230 KFYI.
Sad to see KOY go that route.

Morse IDs and sweep tones. Everything was heard under WGY NY,
co-channel. Signal was on the weak side, but the sweeps and Morse
modulated well enough to break through. Test ended at approximately
0409 UTC (12:09 eastern) on 17 August. Vermont is a needed state for

I heard Morse code in the 0003-0004 ELT range, loud enough to be at least
partially readable. The only problem is that the decipherable code did not
seem close to any ID'able test material-- no WDEV, no 550 kHz, no Waterbury.
Fellow Madison DXer Mark Taylor was over for the test, and we were
high-fiving when we heard the code, we were both convinced it came from the
station. I'm still hoping that is true. Later we heard very weak sweep tones
in the 0007-0008 ELT range, something that's been confirmed by some
individuals on this list, so I feel comfortable that I did log this test.

I was using my Double Kaz for this test, normally beamed 280 degrees but
reversed for this test to beam 100 degrees. My radio is a Drake R8B. First VT
 ever!

Bleary-eyed folks bravely made it to our early start yesterday, to take part
in formal sessions on THE DX FISHBARREL, CHASING SUNSET SKIP, TAMING THE
SHORT VERTICAL, DON MOMAN'S ANTENNA FARM, THE FSL ANTENNA, ADVANCEMENTS IN
MW ANTENNAS AND A CR-1 RECEIVER REVIEW. Our presenters were awesome,
well-prepared, energetic and eager to share. A number of us participated in
the lunch session presented by the IEEE, on the use of meta-materials in
advancing antenna performance. THANK YOU CHRIS FULLER!!!

I'm not alone in declaring that I learned a LOT through the day.

The afternoon highlight for most was the tour of the Pavek Museum of
Broadcasting. We clap our electronic hands in appreciation of the
hospitality and the tours of the Museum led by Steve Raymer, Danny Henry and
 Courtney Bakken.

The evening sessions at the Broadcasting Museum followed business meetings
of the clubs. As expected, each club has a somewhat different situation
regarding membership size and activity level. Good, constructive input was
provided. Ideas on improving Accessibility of club information were offered
by several Blind members. Many favorable comments on the DX Audio Service
and several suggestions on service will be transmitted to Fred Vobbe.

The evening was highlighted by a spirited discussion on the future of the
the DX Clubs led by Skip Dabelstein. Some clear thought was offered as to
how we might reinforce the services our clubs provide their membership.

The NRC members present at its business meeting unanimously approved a
Resolution to be transmitted to the IRCA, expressing NRC's interest in
joining IRCA for its Anniversary Convention in Billings 2014.

IRCA presented its recognition awards to Lee Freshwater and Kraig Krist.
Nick Hall-Patch is asked to provide further detail on these awards for the
 enlightenment of non-IRCA members.

Genial warhorse John Callarman reflected on his years in the hobby and
announced that he was donating to the NRC his new, unused Perseus SDR, to be
sold in a club-wide auction. THANK YOU JOHN!!!

Judos to all who attended...and our admiration for the energy (and stamina)
of those who 'survived' a long and thoroughly enjoyable day.

We also tip our hat in the direction of those fine folks who provided
car-pooling to and from the Museum.

If we haven't worn everyone out, we begin another day at 9 AM this morning.
A report on Saturday at the Convention will follow.

Subject: [IRCA] One Of My Best AM DX Catches...

One of my best ever DX catches was not actually the farthest away. My best
AM DX catch was heard in Marion, IL and the station in question was
then-KCLE 1140 Cleburne, TX (SW of Forth Worth). The station operates with
5KW/4 towers day and 710W/4 towers night but is known as KHFX now.

It was programming classic country back then when I heard it. I was on the
west side of Marion, Illinois fairly close to the Williamson County Airport
when I had a boombox on while sitting in a vehicle in a store parking lot
waiting for a friend. I put a tape in and hit record.. not knowing what I
might get as i spun across the dial.

It wasn't till a week later when I was going over the tape in the
Production Room at KNLV 1060/103.9 Ord, Nebraska (Where I worked) and
heard a KCLE id buried in the mud. TOTALLY UNEXPECTED!

What makes this even more amazing is that I was less then 5 air miles
from the 44W/2 tower night signal of WGGH-AM 1150.. I was right in their
night time null. When I hit record o nthe tape, I was actually recording
just waiting til li tuned in WGGH and didn't wanna miss anything.

Here's a short clip of what I heard back in 2008:

The Buzz-1650 is heard in all parts of Prescott Valley with good signals but
is not heard in Prescott. Arizona has had several of these low power
stations one of them is KBXZ-1650 in Flagstaff which has been in trouble with
the FCC. We went by KBXZ in 2008 during IRCA convention. Also their was a
low power station at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott for

930 KHJ, Los Angeles, CA, almost alone, with very little sign of CJCA
 and the several other regulars
1230 KLAV, Las Vegas, NV, only logged once before
1240 KJOP, Lemoore, CA, in nearly every hour overnight
1270 KDJI, Holbrook, AZ and KBZZ Sparks, NV both over the regular Idaho
 station at times.
1290 KCUB, Tucson, AZ, new for me, with no sign of normally dominant KGVO
1300 KROP, Brawley, CA, only heard twice before
1340 KTPI, Mojave, CA , new for me
1440 KUHL, Santa Maria, CA with no sign of Wetaskawin
1450 KZNU, St.George, UT, way over the regulars from Montana.

A very nice surprise to catch a couple of new ones in July.Makes up

As most MW DXers know there aren't a lot of stations on 720 kHz. One I have
wanted for a while is KFIR in Sweet Home, Oregon, about 450 miles from
 my QTH.
At night KDWN in Las Vegas, NV dominates the frequency with their 50 KW
 power,
day and night. I decided to try for KFIR in the time after sunrise in
 Las Vegas
and just after KFIR switched from their puny night power of 184 watts to
 their
 day power of 10 KW.

Finally this morning about 0530 local time here in the SF bay area KFIR must
have shifted to their 10 KW day power and I got reasonably good KFIR
 reception for
about 15 minutes before propagation faded out. Daytime reception of KFIR
 isn't
normally possible at this 450 mile distance.

Finally logged it using my Excalibur SDR and Quantum Phaser with two random
wires. Thank goodness for the grey-line effect!

 Subject: [IRCA] Eclipse DX?

Lacking a total eclipse, let`s see if there are any DX effects during the
imminent annular eclipse. Beside avoiding looking directly at the sun, if you
are close to the path of annularity, tune around MW and even lower SW bands
to see if night-like conditions briefly skip in some signals not normally
heard in the daytime. Here`s info including maps:

 http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/home/A-Preview-of-May-20ths-Annular-Eclipse-141037803.html

Since the maximum eclipse will be at sunset around here, like from Dallas to
Chicago, night-time conditions will already be in effect normally.

Sp best DX results should be over northern California, where it`s long before
sunset. There might be propagational patches energized for paths at an angle
to the path, e.g. from Idaho to southern California or vice versa. But should
theoretically be best along the path, i.e. northern California, Nevada,
Arizona, New Mexico and into west Texas.

For this you may disregard worries about weather obscuring the event!

Subject: [IRCA] FW: 1000th station heard on ULR

After four years and one month, I was able
to log station #1000 on my barefoot Sony
 SRF-T615.

 4/27/12
1100 UTC 880 kHz XEPNK, Los Mochis,
 Sinaloa, México (2 kW @ 1611 km / 1001 mi).
Heard at 1100 with woman announcing ochenta
ocho A M, the national anthem of México at
1100-1102, and the recently adopted anthem
of Sinaloa at 1102-1104. A brief, mostly
unintelligible announcement by a woman at
1104, followed by a romantic song performed
by a woman at 1105. The signal strength was
poor with moderate QRM from Grupo Fórmula
station XEV. There was also slight QRM from
 KRVN.

It is México #181 and Sinaloa #13.

From rural northern Oklahoma I've been able
to hear stations in 19 countries on four continents
using an Ultralight. I've yet to hear any signals
 from Oceania or South America.

My furthermost reception is HLAZ, 1566 kHz,
Jeju, Republic of Korea, at 11004 km / 6838 miles.
Using a barefoot receiver it is JOGB, 873 kHz,
Kumamoto, Japan, at 10820 km / 6723 miles.

My original intent was never to see how many
stations I could log with an Ultralight Radio. It
simply evolved in that direction as I continued
to listen. Originally it was the challenge of
hearing signals from Asia and Europe on a
pocket size receiver. It occurred a few months
later when I heard JOUB, Akita, Japan, on 747 kHz.
Hearing faint Japanese talk here in Oklahoma
on a tiny SRF-T615 receiver that first time remains
the most exciting moment in this adventure.
I think the only thing that could beat it would be
 to hear Australia.

 Best wishes and good DX.

Hindsight being 20/20, perhaps if KUAI 720 would have ran a DX test last night
instead of (or in addition to) KOTZ there would have been more loggings. One
can never know too far in advance how bad the auroral cx will be. I'm sincerely
hoping that KOTZ will give us another DX test perhaps in the dead center of
next season. I don't have my logbook out but when KUAI 720 did run a DX test
(15 or 20 years ago (?), I was easily able to log and verify them here in
Southern California). 73 Mike Sanburn KG6LJU

Re: [IRCA] Fun Night for sure!

KBOI 950 from New Jersey is a pretty hot catch. Puerto Rico from the Maritimes
is not too shabby either. I too am hoping that KOTZ will give it another go
maybe next season. It is great fun listening for these outstanding tests. This
season I've heard KRSN, KRPI, and KBOIKOTZ and a couple others got away,
Murphy's Law is in effect so close to St Patricks dayI still remember that
stellar KBOI station tour that Mr. Frahm gave us back in 1995 at the IRCA
convention in Boise, hosted by Frank Aden. KBOI is the very first station in my
logbook by the way. Glad that I can still hear them with the advent of semi
local station KIRN 670. A couple months back I posted a classic KBOI
promotional video on the International Radio Club of America Facebook page. It
should still be up there if you dig far enough back. (I'm not entirely crazy
about their new timeline format). Thanks again to all who participated in these
tests. 73 Mike Sanburn KG6LJU

Saturday March 10, 2012 All, What a fun night even if I did not hear KBOI and
KOTZ, but the hunt was a lot of fun and like the good old days. I had KBOI
years ago in NJ when they were on 950 with 5k? How in the world was that
possible..oh yeah...it was in the 60s! Haha. Only new one caught last night
was WKAQ 580 San Juan, PR. The tone on 670 which I was hoping was KBOI turns
out to be a het from Cuba...figured it was too strong to be Idaho and never
did hear code id's etc. Great catches to those who did hear them.

Did anyone hear KOTZ? I was listening online...what a great test! Funny
sounds, music and tones, busy phone signals...and nice vox ID's giving
directions as to how to apply for a QSL. Thanks to Pierre Lonewolf. Maybe we
can try it again when the sun is not hiccuping! George in NoVa

The KRPI DX test was heard fairly well here in the Long Beach CA area. Massive
