The postal address is: Jerry Whitney, WH2XDE, 2083 Stirnie Rd., Victor NY 14564. I will mail (USPS) out a QSL card to anyone who requests one (no SASE needed). The QSL shows a picture of the rather large 1 wavelength horizontal loop and ATU. No website, I can email site pictures etc. to anyone who is interested however. The digital voice modes currently are a work in progress. Very disappointing! Static crashes, selective fading and the transmitter requirements are frustrating. (10db of headroom is needed on the transmitter for peak power output; a 500 watt transmitter needs 5 kW peak to properly modulate!) The solution may be in the receiver. The primary digital mode will likely be DRM with the new low latency compression scheme. I will operate some of the ham modes (FreeDV) also. If there is enough response from listening stations I will probably setup a website with transmission schedules, pictures etc. I'll keep you updated. Try Wednesday 10/15 at UT and beyond. It should be fully operational then. I forgot to ask you if you had any thoughts on the frequency of operation. The plan was to use 1750 kHz but the license allows 1720- 1800. The band segment in this part of the US is quiet with only a few very weak 9 kHz spaced stations from Europe when propagation is exceptional. Thanks 73 (Jerry Whitney, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Jerry, I checked the 1711-1800 range a few times last night, and hear nothing but some weak carriers, maybe out of local devices. 1750 itself seems quite clear. Are you referring to AM broadcasters from Europe? Must be pirates, but most of them are below 1700, as licensed broadcasting there still stops at 1602, and I would not expect them to stick to 9-kHz spacing. What kind of programming will there be? What is your ultimate objective after these tests? (Glenn to Jerry, via DXLD) Glenn, Thanks for your input. I'll stick to 1750 for now. I ran some antenna tests this weekend and wasn't happy with the antenna bandwidth so more work will be needed. This will delay the startup for perhaps a week. I will email you when it`s ready. Not much thought on programming yet, still some technical details to work on. I suppose I could transmit World of Radio on AM if I had permission! As you likely know, there are some clever new digital data methods developed in the last few years by some of the telecom companies or their licensed partners. These digital data streams are very impressive but require a robust connection. I'm working on several of the licensed data systems and trying to adapt them to medium wave broadcast. I'm most interested in what happens after the transmitter. The digital magic is done by people much smarter than I. 73 (Jerry Whitney, WH2XDE, Oct 13, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Glenn, Antenna looks good so I will start tests tonight (Wednesday at 2345 UT) carrier and MCW at 1000 watts. I think it's awesome the test made it to Europe. This is a perfect example of a test done perfectly. Lots of lead notice time. It came off exactly as planned. And the content was meticulously and thoughtfully put together. Paul Walker and Bob Souza get an A++ IMO. The only thing that sent a very slight jitter down my spine was that it seemed to start a couple of minutes late. That's when I went online to the webstream, and when I heard music my heart sank for a second. But within a moment or two the sweeps were happening. In retrospect, I really like this - I don't think a test should completely come off as expected or predicted by DXers. Each should have its own unique fingerprint, because it's more fun and challenging that way and because it makes it more QSLable and verifiable. So the late start by a couple minutes was IMP a strong positive. Yeah, I know any one of us can tune in on the web and hear it, if there's a live stream. But it's harder for the tiny few in our midst who report what they haven't legitimately heard to falsify an actual distant recording (though of course I can think of multiple ways it can be done by someone so determined). I'm still reeling from how far this one got out... In the early 2000's, we need a double blind experiment to determine what material worked the best in cutting through the noise of a cluttered channel at various signal levels. Hands down, the clear winner were the sweep tones used in last night's KCKM test. These were followed by the Off-Hook telephone sound, slide whistle, and finally Morse Code at around 900-1000 Hz. This was true at all signal levels, but especially at the weakest levels. Some material that did not test well: 1.) Christmas Music 2.) Voice announcements with either male or female voice. 3.) Marching Band Music 4.) Classical Music 5.) Sound effects like roosters, bells, etc. One musical source that scored higher than any other were TV show theme songs. I think this is due to the fact that they stand out from other clutter, and are recognizable patterns to our brains. Some stations just are not willing to run only Sweeps Codes for extended times, and TV theme songs make a good alternative. But to the extent possible, a scientific test and lots of on-air experience proves that nothing beats sweep tones if a station wants to be heard. While I've retired from CPC duties for now, I'm happy to provide the material for DX Tests. In fact you can download them yourself at: http://www.highnoonfilmclient.com/AMCPC/ The sweep tones and other sound effects are in a ZIP file, and the WinMorse software (Freeware) is also mirrored here. It makes it easy to convert text files into Morse Code .WAV files. It sounds identical when tuned to 1370 USB or 1390 LSB. Since it's symmetrical around 1380, that indicates it's likely a spurious emission from a 1380 station. I haven't been able to correlate it with a particular station yet, but its strength indicates that it has to be somewhere in the Northeast. Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Reviewing SDR DX
I am late to this conversation, but my two cents Canadian worth... It is definitely a time-consuming activity to go back and review 'grabs'/'captures'. In PEI this past November, I tried to follow Bruce Conti's example of getting the top or the bottom of the hour on the Winradio Excalibur G31DDC. But realizing that I was limited in both room on the hard drive and time in general, I limited myself mostly to pre-sunset and local sunset times for Trans-Atlantic signals. Very useful for matching up things like the Iranian signals (as Jim Renfrew has suggsted) or possible parallels of the UK stations like Gold. Once it was dark, it did not seem that there would be much point in getting UTC, 0100 UTC, etc. unless conditions suddenly changed. I know I missed one or two interesting things, but you can't hear everything, right? I also made a bunch of sunrise recordings, with hopes of hearing some Trans-Pacific stuff. As there was nothing interesting, those were trashed/deleted almost immediately. Now that I am back home, I still have lots of recordings to go through, which will be a 'rainy day' project. But at last I managed to finish listening to what ever I had recorded from **2012** before I went back to PEI in 2013. I have also been trying to keep IDs for future posterity using Audacity to edit the interesting bits of audio. Back in Toronto, still wishing to DX in the present, I am trying to get one sunrise or sunset recording a few times a week. Sunrise is best for me. It certainly helps being help to get a recording of a few minutes around 7:30 or 8:00 am local time when I am otherwise trying to get ready for work. The playback is often done later in the evening while I might also be watching a hockey game with the sound off. Or in the case yesterday, watching the NFL playoffs without listening to the announcers. Although I will generally record a segment of the band that is 1000 kHz or 1250 kHz wide, I can usually skip most of anything below about 790 kHz as there's not much new I expect to hear down there and my locals on 590, 640, 680, 740 and 820 wreak a lot of havoc in that range. Mostly I have been concentrating on the graveyard frequencies with some success. I record about four minutes per hour, starting at local sunset and continuing through sunrise. This provides a total of 19 MW channels to be reviewed per hour, Recording for 4 minutes over a ten hour period, leaves me with 760 minutes of data to be reviewed daily. Some channels are nearly impossible to find new ones on, so these can be reviewed quickly, checking only for unusual conditions. But it's still a massive amount of data. Since starting this just a few days ago, I've already deleted days of recordings, unchecked, simply because there is no practical way to review it all. Perseus owners would have an even bigger issue, due to the much wider bandwidth that can be recorded. The entire AM band for instance! What strategies have other DX'ers found successful for managing the data? I've considered recording just the sunrise/sunset periods, or waiting for a night with unusual conditions to record TOH ID periods only, or even simply recording for a week in mid-winter, then taking my sweet time to review them during the summer. -- -- 73, Les Rayburn, N1LF 121 Mayfair Park Maylene, AL 35114 EM63nf 6M VUCC #1712 AMSAT #38965 Grid Bandits #222 Southeastern VHF Society Central States VHF Society Life Member Six Club #2484 Active on 6 Meters thru 1296, 10GHz Light ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca

Had a station playing All My Love (from 1979) and D'yer Mak'er (from 1972) by Led Zeppelin at 2:04 p.m. this afternoon on 1340. Heard on car radio. If I hear anything on 1340 it is usually WLVL-Lockport NY. Did not see anything that would fit, such as a 1340 station that is simulcasting an FM station. Maybe somebody has changed formats? Conditions were already pretty good by this time, as I was hearing 1450-CHOU Montreal at this time. 73 Niel Wolfish, Toronto ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] 970 Question
I have been spending a lot of time on 970 lately while semi-local WNED (soon to be WDCZ) in Buffalo NY is currently off the air. Most evenings WGTK Louisville KY is the dominant station. Meanwhile at sunrise, WFUN Ashtubala OH seems to be on top until my local mixing product/image created by 1010-CFRB and 1050-CHUM shows up. This evening at 1936 ELT I heard somebody with Everybody Talks by Neon Trees, which I understand is currently at #33 on the Billboard Hot 100. It sounded like the entire song, as opposed to a snippet, so I don't think it was bumper music. After playing back my recording, over the next 20+ minutes of listening, the only thing IDable on 970 was WGTK, somebody playing The Beach Boys Little Saint Nick (that could be anybody at this time of the year) and Super Freak by the late Rick James (who was from Buffalo). I'll probably regret asking this... Does anybody have any ideas who the station on 970 playing Neon Trees might have been? WAMD In Aberdeen MD looks like it 'might' be a possibility... but who knows? On the way home from the store this evening heard somebody on 1550 playing Steely Dan's Night By Night (from their 1974 Pretzel Logic release). And too early for WROC-Rochester to start taking charge. Just wondering if anybody else has heard this recently. Perhaps WDIG in Steubenville OH? Niel Wolfish Toronto __ Looking for the perfect gift? Re: [IRCA] Applications for two new AM stations in Toronto
With Halifax gone from 920, I can tell you that CKNX dominated 920 out in Prince Edward Island too (with Providence's WHJJ a close second). [IRCA] Prime Time Sports on 1400
This evening at 6:35 p.m. I stumbled onto Prime Time Sports with Bob McCown on 1400 parallel to my local 590-CJCL (Toronto) where the show originates. I know that WKNW in Sault Ste. [IRCA] 1060 mystery
Heard Saturday evening while attending Michigan Area Radio Enthusiasts (MARE) gathering in Brighton, Michigan: Station on 1060 in KYW null heard at various times between 2153 and 2256 ELT with songs by Roy Oribson, Queen, Lou Christie, Brownsville Station, America and Mason Williams' Classical Gas. [IRCA] An unidentified on 1100
I've been paroled from Burnt River Penitentiary. After a weekend of listening to the same Valentine's Day at Walmart, Rivals.com and Autozone commercials over and over, I have an unidentified on 1100. Saul Chernos and I heard Le Freak (by Chic) and In The Navy (Village People) at 1755 Eastern on Saturday the 9th underneath WTAM-Cleveland. Naturally, we couldn't ID it. Does somebody in the midwest think this sounds like WISS in Berlin WI? [IRCA] CFFX heard on the North Coast...
...of Lake Ontario. Glad to see that the CFFX test made it to the West Coast and to Scotland. Here in Toronto (just 2 hours or so west of Kingston on Highway 401) I had no problem hearing CFFX mixing with WFIR. Of course, CFFX was a regular here. I listened before the test period started to hear a ..we're moving to FM announcement. And at midnight I heard the code, sweep tones and music by John Mayer and some Canadian content in the form of a song by Blue Rodeo. That was enough for me, as it was already past my bedtime.. Contrary to the myth eminating from Tennessee, this Canadian also is not rich and had to get up early for work. I wonder how much other Canadian content got played before they signed off of 960 for good. Perhaps Gordon Lightfoot's Wreck of The Russ Edmunds Fitzgerald? (Although that might be too much of an oldie for the Lite 104.3 format..) Thanks to Saul and Jim. I checked for about a minute this morning on the way to work on the car radio and 960 had strains of news radio WERC. Niel Wolfish Toronto Looking for the perfect gift? [IRCA] 910 Unid
I'll concur with Russ. I was listening to 910 (again) on the SRF-59 last night and heard 3WR around 2330. Also in the mix at that time, the Cuban and WSBA (York PA). When I awoke this morning it was all Praise 910 from Apollo PA (WAVL). My location in Toronto is about 15 minutes northwest of Saul's place so we would have similar reception conditions. [IRCA] Another SRF-59 owner - initial testing
I decided to splurge on the SONY SRF-59, as if I need another radio (considering the amount of time I spend DXing). I found what appeared to be the only one in stock at my local Best Buy lying in a pile with the some portable CD players. I would have asked one of the sales staff for assistance in locating the SRF-59 but all the clerks seemed to be busy helping other customers trying to buy HD radios. I could have pulled a George Constanza {Seinfeld episode # 79 - The Pie} and hid the item until January when our Goods and Services Tax reduces from 6% to 5% and saved 30 cents! So far all I have done with the SRF-59 is tune in 910 and place it next to my Radio Shack loop. 910 is a good frequency to sit on as nothing ever seems to dominate. And I'm still hoping to finally log either Minot ND (KCJB) or Drumheller AB (CKDQ) one of these days The Cuban Radio Cadena Agramonte was loud and clear at 2330 last night and WFDF (Radio Disney) was dominating this morning around 0700. Neat radio. I'm just not used to not being able to punch up a frequency or rely on a bank of memories. 73 Niel Wolfish Toronto Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. [IRCA] 1070-WINA IDs heard on 1450?
My getting ready for work morning routine usually involves leaving my ICF-2010 on in the background on 1450. With semi-local CHUC-Cobourg gone, I'm hoping to hear something aside from WMAJ (State College), WYNY (Rome) or WPSE (Erie). This morning, I heard two 1070-WINA IDs at approximately 5:50 a.m. in the space of about 30 seconds. I see that WVAX in Charlottesville VA is co-owned with WINA by Saga Communications. Can anybody closer to that neck of the words confirm that WVAX might be simulcasting WINA or maybe is just sharing news clips with WINA? [IRCA] Problemas con CHHA-1610
On Sunday evening as I was driving to meet Jim Renfrew and Saul Chernos for the pre-Cappahayden DXpedition departure dinner I noticed that local CHHA was throwing a nasty spur onto both 1560 and 1660 (50 kHz on either side of 1610). (For a moment there I was fooled and wondered why WQEW was in Spanish) This morning I noticed that CHHA was off the air. I was able to hear Radio Disney on 1560 on the car radio around 11:45 a.m. Haven't had a chance to see if they are back and if the problem is fixed.
