Since CKMO cut their modulation, CHML Hamilton Ontario has been very
common here. Infact I have been trying for MN, but so far no luck. But
I do hear CHML a lot.

Colin,

CHML may have more of a lobe towards me, being 160 miles South of
Victoria, but they are sure common. The three fairly common Ontario
stations there days are Hamilton-900, Toronto-740, and Oshawa-1580. But
Quebec is really tough to hear. Very rare.

2012-06-16 Thread Patrick Martin
I don't know if anyone has posted this, but I have not seen it. I got a
phone call from Eldon Luoma of BC last night. He said about 2 weeks ago.
Tom McCormick (West Lafayette IN) was on his way North into Alberta
Canada and his van rolled. He passed away of head injuries. He was 61. I
remember Tom at IRCA conventions back in the early 70s. He was quite a
active DXer then and really a nice guy. In recent years, he was married

My prayers go out to his family. Cards can be sent to: Karen Nipshank

2012-06-23 Thread Patrick Martin
Walt,

Thanks for posting this. Yes, I missed it. I have nearly all of the
Fijian MW stations heard and QSL'd through the years. I remember well
890/891 Lautoka for years back in the 70s/80s. That frequency used to be
all Fijian except for BBC News at 0800 UTC. Later on they switched to
Hindi after 0700 and then all Hindi. But Lautoka was a real Island
friend to me for many years. They were always the strongest too running
10 KW.
They will be missed.

Re: [IRCA] Fiji off AM except 558

Radio Fiji had some different frequncies back in the late 70s when I
first heard them. They were using 1323 ,1206, 891, and 711. Later on
they switched to 774 and 1152 vacating the above 4. I think the only 2
frequencies I never heard were 990 and 1089. 1089 was a 1 KW portable
unit. The regular one here that I could depend on was 891. Their 10 KW
from Lautoka had a great signal. I called Dave Williams and we were
talking about the old 890, later 891. But the 890 was common through the
70s before the switch to the 9 kHz plan. After WLS would fade out
(before KDXU), Fiji was there.

I just got an e mail from Dan Sys of BC that CFWH 570 has their FM now

Also in Montreal Tietolman Tetrault Pancholy Media has applied for an

applied for one last year on 940, but it was rejected because of
frequency issues (4 applications.3 frequencies available).  At the

frequency. Approval of this application seems almost guaranteed:

Re: [IRCA] New Station KARI 550 Blaine, WA

2012-07-24 Thread Patrick Martin
It took years to finally ID KBRW fo me living on the Northern Oregon
Coast. KNBR SF is a powerhouse here running 50 KW ND 24/7. It is easier
to log stations to the East on 680, that North. Plus CHFA is in the way.
I knew I had logged KBRW in the past, but I could never get an ID from
them. The format matched, but at ID time, too much KNBR, until a few
years ago during a very good Northern opening that gave KBRW a slight
edge in signal. I caught their weather forecast, IDs, and even IDs for
their translators. But it wasn't easy phasing down KNBR enough. KBRW is
a good verifier too. I have their bumper sticker on the back of my van.
Living in AK for 12-1/2 years (55-67), AK has always been an interest
to me. I only need a few stations to have them all, so I keep trying
from Fall to Spring KTKN-930, KBBI-890, KENI-650 and KFQD-750 are the
easiest here.

Dennis,

If I could run a beverage to the NW here, I would get KBRW I am sure as
i would have enough signal at times to over power KNBR, but using a EWE,
I don't have enough signal generally. But KBRW was the last station I
needed from Nome North. I still need Unalakleet 930 though.

Re: [IRCA] 1660 kHz unknown TIS/ HARS station

2012-08-03 Thread Patrick Martin
Dennis,

Congrats on your NOAA 1660. There are NOAA stations up and down the
Oregon Coast on 1660 and 1650. Astoria has a 1650 and I believe Newport
and Coos Bay. 1660 are in other cities, Florence for one. That would
point to the Eugene weather forecast. ODOT set up up this coastal
network. Tillamook has 1650 I think too. But they are all on 1650 or
1660. The Network is run by ODOT out of Salem (1-503-378-8761) or (455
Airport Road SE Salem OR 97301). They can probably give you a list of
what tx are in what cities. When I phase out 1650 Astoria, I get either
Newport and/or Coos Bay. The QSL I have goes back to 2004.

I wonder if any NOAA ODOT are still operating on 1660 along the coast? I
can barely hear one off the SW EWE, but nothing off the Eastern Beverage
during the day, today. I will check a bit later. Hot here too. Out here,
it hit 96 and Astoria was 92. For a time, Seaside was nearly 100. So not
much cooler here than inland where Portland hit 102 and Vancouver 103.
But cooler weather tomorrow along the coast, around 70.

Dennis,

No sign of the TIS as yet. I tried to hear Sandy with the beverage also
and not a peep. There is one weak one on 1660 off the SW EWE, too too
weak to ID. What weather forecast are you hearing, or can you tell?
  At 5PM is was 95, 5:30 at 96, then by 6 PM, it was 90, 6:30, 84, Now
it is 59 and very cool. The heat here was short-lived. 96 is a bit much
for us on the coast. 65-70 is forecasted on Sunday, if the the clouds
and fog burn off but that may not happen.
I'll try again for the TIS.

Eugene would have been my guess. I do remember when I lived in Portland,
Eugene stations would be pretty easy to hear with the shape of the
valley. Here, except for KUGN and to a certain point KPNW, the rest of
the Eugene stations are not strong. I wonder how many NOAA stations are
on 1660 & 1650 now in Oregon? For those interested, ODOT will QSL. TIS
stations are fun to log. Great going. I'll try for this one. Thanks.

I would guess KTIB does not always drop power and that may be why we get

anywhere. Even KEX looks like they dropped it. I have not heard IBOC on

hi. But the consumer just doesn't care. Even on FM, it has not been
popular. Why even have IBOC on AM anyway? For the listener that enjoys
decent frequency response in analog, trying to listen to a station
running HD in analog, the audio suffers. KEX sounds great in analog
without IBOC. They always did, if the listener had a good sound system.

Re: [IRCA] Fiji verification

2012-11-02 Thread Patrick Martin
Nigel,

Great going! Radio Fiji used to be an excellent QSLer back in the 70s &
80s. But the last QSL card I got was in the late 90s (1152 kHz), I had
to phone Radio Fiji and I got a QSL card. I spoke to one of their techs.
I really wanted that one, as except for portable transmitters, I have
the rest QSL'd. But it looks like those days are over. 891 Lautoka used
to be a powerhouse after Midnight here on the coast. they played great
Fijian music. In later years they switched to Hindi on 891 though.

[IRCA] NW Storm

2012-11-19 Thread Patrick Martin
Hi Everyone,

We have another Pacific storm hitting the NW. Cannon Beach, South of
Seaside got a wind gust of 99 MPH and Newport got one of 98 MPH. Lots of
rain too and flooding. We have gotten about 3 inches in the past 36
hours and are expecting another 3+ inches by tomorrow. There is a
possibility that as this low slides South and inland, the beaches could
see gusts over 100 MPH for a time. It is daylight now and I see no
damage. It even looks like the beverage is still there, at least the
wire is not lose and the trees are still up. But it is roaring out
there. Thank goodness we did not lost power either as Pacific Power
beefed up the lines after our storm in 2007. Plus the big box stores
like Costco cannot afford to lose power, plus Fred Meyer. Then of late,
Warrenton oked Walmart and that should be built within the next year or
so. But it has been a wild day. Too dangerous to be out right now to
check things. But at least the satellite dishes look ok and are working.
I guess the thought of the 2007 being a 100 year storm, this one 5 years
later, blows that theory away. Is this the new normal for the coast?
Time will tell.At least we don't get the damage they get in more
populated areas. Thanks to Walt's suggestion a few years ago, I bought
those Bose Noise Cancelling phones and they are worth their weight in
gold to me. Hour after hour of roaring winds is rough to handle. It is
like a 747 is parked over the roof.

[IRCA] NW Storm Update

2012-11-20 Thread Patrick Martin
After sending the emails yesterday, shortly after that the wind really
picked up and gusts were around 100 MPH. One was clocked at 101 MPH on
the Megler Bridge (Astoria), and Naselle Ridge in SW WA got one at 114
MPH. Mt. Hebo South, had 106 MPH. and out went the power a bit after 8
AM. The power was finally restored after 4 AM this morning, so it was
off for 16+ hours. At the peak 32,500 were without power in Clatsop
County. Fortunately these Pacific storms are warm, so the house temp
only got down to 64F. All of the 3 AM's were off including the EAS
station KAST! Since KAST/KVAS/FMs moved to Warrenton, when they lose
power and then they cannot get the microwave signal over to the TX
sites. They were better off at their old QTH, where the tower of KAST
was right behind the building, but their new digs it makes it harder to
operate. Most of the FMs were off too, except for KMUN and they took
over the job of giving out info as they also did in 2007.
This was a doosy of a storm, one of the worst. It did not go on as
long as the one did in 2007, fortunately, but it took a lot of trees
down and that it what distroyed the power. The powerlines stayed up
fine, but not when a tree falls acress them.
All of my antennas came through fine including my dishes. I lost a
little roofing off my shed, which is easy to fix and no leaks in it.
But this is another storm to remember. Thank the Lord I got through
it safe and sound. But there were some that were killed with trees that
fell across them and even crushed a few cars and houses.

[IRCA] OT UHF Yagis

2013-01-05 Thread Patrick Martin
I know several DXers also are heavily into TV/FM DX, since I am also not
a member of the WTFDA, I thought maybe I could post a question here that
is a bit off topic.

I live on the Northern Oregon Coast as many of you know and I am trying
to receive some translators 25-30 miles away (Gray's River WA). Some
people around here can get them, but I have a hill in the way. All 5 of
the UHF translators are digital now. ERP of 500-1200 watts. I used to
get them snowy in analog, but now I get none of them strong enough to
lock. The strongest one (38) I can get on the meter 18-28% and the
signal bouncing around and it is not strong enough to lock. Right now I
am using a 91XG Yagi I bought from Solid Signal and a 30DB Channel
Master booster. Is there something better I could buy that would give me
more gain? I have read on the internet about Corner Reflectors and
Bowtie antennas, but I have no idea what would be the best. Could buy
another 91XG and stack the two, but I am not sure if the extra gain
would be any better. If that hill wasn't in the way, I am sure I would
get the signal. Any suggestions? I cannot really raise the antenna, as
the hill is too high to get around, and our wind would take the antenna
down. It sits at 15 fet above the ground. The TV Fool site says at my
QTH, the signal is knife edge. Thanks.

Re: [IRCA] OT UHF Yagis

Karl wrote:

>>Highly recommended is the Channel Master 8 bay bow tie. It has a lot
of gain. it is light with a low wind profile. It is broader than a Yagi
and not susceptible to fading. It's bandwidth is appropriate down to

Thanks Karl. A couple more questions. Would one antenna do well enough
or should I add a second and make it a 16 bowtie? Can they be stacked? I
have never used a Bowtie antenna before, just Yagis. It could be the
Yagi is too directional to find the swwet spot too. I had thought of
that. Down to Ch 7. that is great, if I get ay VHF skip. I have detected
signal on Ch 13 (Seattle) but never strong enough to lock. This is with
the UHF Yagi 91XG.

>> Use the pre-amp and some good co-ax. Very most important: Find good
height, keep trees and brush out of your pick-up path, and search for a
sweet spot. UHF is really spotty and unpredictable.
You have to walk around, antenna in hand, and find the spot where your
signal
is the hottest.<<

I had wondered about the height of the Yagi. With the bowtie, carrying
it and moving it around may be easier too, by looking at the TV set. I
plan on buying a portable TV Set that has a digital tuner. I wonder if
most brands are equally sensitive or are some brands better? My
knowledge of the OTA digital signal is limited.<<

Much appreciated. I'll let you know how it all works out. Currently I am
using RG6, about 50-60 feet of it.

Re: [IRCA] OT UHF Yagis

2013-01-06 Thread Patrick Martin
Hi Craig,

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

>>The antenna you have does look good. Karl recommended the 8-bay
antenna which is also very good. I've used that 8-bay on my tower since
TV went digital. It's aimed at Boston stations around 40 miles away, and
the local stations are 90 degrees off the side of the antenna. Boston
stations read over 90 percent on the receiver, yet the local stations
which are two miles away off to the side are slightly lower. That
antenna is very directional. Channel Master CM- is about the best
preamp.<<

I forgot to mention that the preamp I have is the CM .
I do have translators I get off Megler Mt that are 12.1 miles away,
and they are strong, but I don't get eveything I want from them. Some
have not gone ditital as yet. All of the Gray's River ones are digital,
so they have more sub channels.
At 12.1 miles away (LOS), I get:

17D (NBC) 1.8 KW ERP 94%
21A (FOX) 12.1KW
23D (PBS) 5.7KW100%
26A (ABC) 23 KW
34D (CBS) .586 KW 62%

The Gray's River translators have ABC in Digital which has the best
signal (no lock), Ch 38, and has METV for their sub channel. A friend 4
miles North of me gets that Gray's River tx at 81%, but he doesn't have
the hill blocking him.

>>What I would do is move the antenna around to see if there is a sweet
spot. Would also get a 20' pipe of the largest diameter that the antenna
will mount and guy wire it. Height makes a difference, and a length of
pipe would stand up to your 100mph wind.<<

Would that extra 5 feet make any difference? I have temp raised the
antenna up to 25 feet in the Summer and still no difference in signal.
The TV Fool info says I would have to go up to 100 feet to make any
difference. That hill is about 2 miles away nd may be a few hundred feet
high.

>>Do you get different reception in winter vs. summer? Leaves can absorb
signal. <<

I have not noticed that much of a difference and there is nothing
blocking the antenna to the N/NE from my house to the hill. So no leaves
of others things in the way. The Spruce trees are a long ways off.

>>So far the best receiver I've had for TV is the current TiVo unit.
Tried a few others including a rather expensive PHD-8VX. It was almost
as good as TiVo.
http://www.epvision.com/HDTVSTB/phd8vxmain.htm<<

Thanks. I am looking for a good portable TV to try and find the sweet
spot if possible. I need a digital portable TV anyway.

>>Back in the 1950's a person in NY state had a similar problem as you
do, a hill in the way. What he did was made a rhombic antenna on that
hill aimed to New York City and connected directly to another rhombic
aimed to him. That was a passive reflector and allowed him to receive
TV. Kind of a cool trick.<<

These Grays River tx are lp too, running from 500 w to 1KW ERP and that
doesn't help either. Again thanks. I may try the 8 Bay as it would not
be as tight of a pattern as the Yagi.

Re: [IRCA] India on 1071

2013-01-07 Thread Patrick Martin
Great DX. I have not seen India reported in sometime. The last time I
heard it was at least 10 years ago (1566). I got 864 Shillong back in
1992. But that is a toughie from NA. Here in the West Coast, I have
gotten it 1500-1700 UTC in the Winter. Congrats.

Thanks Walt. At 0840 UTC I got a woman speaking briefly, but the audio
faded quickly.

Thanks. Has India been logged at Grayland? I don't remember. I know it
was reported at NF and the Queen Charlottes.

Re: [IRCA] India on 1071

2013-01-08 Thread Patrick Martin
Yes, I realize that India has been logged from NFD and the Queen
Charlottes, but I wonder if anyone logged it from Grayland WA? Here in
the NW, India is very rare. But the early 90s were amazing with logs
from India (864), Bangladesh (558) and Nepal (792 & 576). These loggings
were done with a EWE antenna, not a beverage. But Dxing on the OR coast
as many years as I have (45+), I feel that the early 90s here were very
unusual and being at the right place at the right time and using a top
of the line receiver (Drake R8 at the time), with a good ECSS mode.
Everything just came together. Oh course having a very low noise level
makes all of the difference in the world too.

Re: [IRCA] India on 1071

2013-01-08 Thread Patrick Martin
Guy,

I always get more excited when I see an outstanding catch from someone's
backyard. I know many catches would never be logged here, but the OR/WA
coasts have pulled in a lot of very rare catches.
I think I remember, now that you mentioned it, your tentative logging
of 864 on the WA Coast. I could not remember if India was logged by
anyone else. To be honest, I did not really know for sure what my catch
was, except maybe? India, until John Bryant played my tape to his
students and one student from that area of NE India IDed the language
and the station. But again, I think a lot of the DX was being at the
right place at the right time. Except for a couple times in the late 90s
when I also heard AIR 1566, I have not heard anymore Indians on MW here.
Thanks for the reply.

Patrick

[IRCA] 963 kHz

2013-01-09 Thread Patrick Martin
963 kHz is back tonight at 0420 UTC with a Barbra Streisand song. I
cannot tell which one, but it is buried in the 960 splash. Maybe the
signal will improve.

Re: [IRCA] 963 kHz

2013-01-09 Thread Patrick Martin
Walt,

I am surprised as you guys to the North just about always get the TAs
better than I do. I would guess Finland, but it never surfaced enough to
hear the language. I did catch a female ancr though. The last time I
caught Finland 963 good enough to really copy was some years back during
Christmas and they were playing back to back Christmas music, but no ID
that time either. Lots of splatter from 960 though, from CFAC/KALE.
There is always next time.

Re: [IRCA] Washington High Band station question

2013-01-10 Thread Patrick Martin
KAZ,

I have been monitoring 1550, waiting to see if their new CP will make a
difference along the coast. So far nothing different, if they are using
the new site. I am sure they will still be nulling the South/SSE to
protect Vancouver WA and Bellevue as well as probably KZIZ 1560.

Rene'

In checking 1550 here during midday, they don't sound any stronger
today. I can generally hear them way under Vancouver WA during the day
and the signal is the same as I type this. Last night they were in the
usual jumble even off the NE EWE. I have not heard any change in the
signal here as yet.

Re: [IRCA] KXET 1150 kHz Back on air with Russian Programming

2013-01-11 Thread Patrick Martin
Dennis,

Thanks for the heads up. Yes, KXET is fine here at S9 and SAH behind it
from I presume Seattle. 1130 Mt Angel is S9+5DB, so both are near the
same in signal. Seattle is dominant on 1150 off the NE EWE here. KXET
does sound weaker than it used to, or Seattle is stronger.

running about S9 to S9+10. I wondered where KPOJ was, and off the
