It is difficult to believe it has been ten years since I last talked to John.
He was a mentor, introducing me to the joy and economy of ultralight DX-ing.
I last met him at his home a few days before his passing. He and Linda were
preparing for a move to Orcas Island. I remember him telling me he was leaving
Stillwater never to return. But fate dealt him a different end.

You are missed John.

Tonight, I’m now hearing CJGX 940 broadcasting their usual country music fare.
Maybe what you heard last night had something to do with the annual Grey Cup
game played in Edmonton on Sunday. The Calgary Stampeders beat the Ottawa
Red-Blacks for the CFL championship.

GX940 is a regular here at night.

I must confess I haven’t tuned into WWV in over a decade, but I do use the time
signal from WWVB every moment of everyday. I image the current Kavanaugh
hearings and its investigation by the FBI is costing us far more than the
current and future annual operating cost of the time signal stations. Our
government will figure out a way to squander the money on far more useless
means.

Re: [IRCA] Morning TP Methodology?

2018-09-20 Thread Richard N. Allen via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
I’m still a diehard ultralight DX-er. I was encouraged to get into the game by
nearby DX-ers John Bryant and Kirk Allen, later by Robert Ross and Gary DeBock.
Therefore, I still use a small portable receiver (usually a PL-380 or Skywave)
tuning one station at a time. For TP DX I normally begin about 30 minutes
before LSR by checking 774 kHz for a signal from JOUB and go from there. While
I prefer to DX using a barefoot receiver, I have come to rely more on an FSL
aerial. From Oklahoma I've managed to log BCB stations from every continents,
except South America, using ultralights receivers. For example, this morning I
heard JOGB from 10820 km away.

There were plenty of heterodynes to be heard from the southwest on the 9 kHz

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 12/31/17

2017-12-31 Thread Richard N. Allen
Transpacific reception has been rare here this season. But this morning there
were traces of signals from Japan before sunrise (1241 UTC).

594 JOAK? barely audible woman talking heard briefly at 1325.
774 JOUB poor signal at 1256, fading to barely audible by 1257. Faded out at
1258. Long pip of time signal heard at 1300, but nothing afterward.

Best wishes to all for a happy and more production new year in 2018.
