[IRCA] KCMY 1300
--- Begin Message --- At 0646 ELT this morning, 12/10, I heard KCMY 1300 "Cowboy Country" Carson City, Nevada. They were strong & steady so I think they were running their daytime power of 5kw instead of their night power of 120 watts. I thought I was hearing KLER Orofino, Idaho, which usually occupies 1300 here & is also C, until they gave their calls & slogan. Since it was 0346 local time it's conceivable that they were testing their transmitter during the experimental period. What's interesting for me is I first heard them as KPTL in November 1962 at the tender age of 11, just a couple days after discovering AM DX by accidentally picking up KFBK 1530 on an old Sears Silvertone 5 tube clock radio my parents gave me. That discovery launched a hobby for me that I still thoroughly enjoy 57 years later. I wouldn't pick up KPTL again until 1988 on my Sony ICF 2003 that I still have. This morning's catch of KCMY is only the third time I've heard them from here. I did hear them at the 2017 IRCA Convention in Reno since they are local there, hi. [IRCA] Fw: KGA 1510 & KWLO 1580
--- Begin Message --- - Forwarded Message - From: Stan Weisbeck To: irca-requ...@hard-core-dx.com Cc: Stan Weisbeck Sent: Friday, January 18, 2019, 12:18:57 PM PSTSubject: KGA 1510 & KWLO 1580 I hadn't noticed that my local KGA had changed formats until I saw Bill Harms & Bruce Portzer's posts about it. I just tuned in & since I'm not a hip hop fan I don't think I'll be listening to them much. They probably aren't expecting to attract too many 67 year old classic rock fans like me anyway. Spokane already has a hip hop FM, KEZE 96.9, which has been around a few years. I don't imagine KGA will do well with this format but who knows. Being on 103.5 FM they might attract some of the younger folks. The slogan KGA is using is "103-5, The Game." On the same note, I recently asked a 26 year old co-worker if he ever listens to radio. He replied that he doesn't. He listens to music on the internet. On another note, I'm occasionally hearing a weak station on 1580 that's playing oldies & I think it's the new KWLO Springville, UT (about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City). I thought I heard the slogan "Utah's Ghost," between a couple songs. Yesterday, I thought I heard "...W-L-O Springville" at 57 before the hour but it was so weak it could have been wishful thinking on my part. I'll keep trying. [IRCA] WRCR off the air
As I reported here earlier this week, I noticed WRCR back on the air on 1700 kHz Tuesday (EDST) evening after a long absence. Their signal was so good here in my neck of the woods that I could listen to the station on my car radio as I drove around town Wednesday. Thursday, I noticed that they were gone again. Same this morning... no WRCR on the car radio or the IC-R8600. No news on their website (http://www.wrcr.com) about what is going on. Hello Barry, I have been listening off and on, so I don'ty know its full schedule, but it seems to be mixed. [IRCA] My dog story
My dog woke me up at 4 AM to take her outside. After she was done, I climbed back upstairs and concluded I could go back to sleep after I checked the radio bands. Starting at 1710 kHz, I slowly began tuning and stopped short at 1700 kHz where I heard a weak signal. WJCC (Miami Springs, Florida) shows up here often enough that I thought that's what I was hearing, but after a few minutes, I realized that the back-to-back music with no announcements was not WJCC's format. With no announcements, it was going to be a difficult ID, so I had Radio-Locator list all the stations on 1700 <https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?call==AM=1700_exact=Yes_search=starts==_ful=Y_lp=Y_lic=Y_cp=Y=Call=20=1=>. Then I went down the list clicking each station's audio link to find the station audio that matched what I was hearing on the air. Thus, I was able to identify the station: KKLF in Richardson, Texas, transmitting 1 kW, 1419 miles to my west-southwest; my first logging of a Texas station on the AM band! Equipment used was the ICOM IC-R8600 receiver and the Hy-Gain 18AVT/WB-A vertical antenna. 73, Stan, WA1LOU Wolcott, CT, USA ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] Pirate on 1710 in Hartford
Saturday morning (4:15 AM EDST), I dropped a relative off at the airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, CT. On the trip home, I was solo, so I did some DXing with the car radio in my 2007 Subaru Outback Sport. I tuned to 1700 kHz and found WJCC in Miami Springs, Florida fading in and out. Nice catch on a car radio! As I entered Hartford from the north on I-91, a station on an adjacent frequency was splattering onto 1700, so I tuned up and down and found a very strong signal on 1710 transmitting Spanish music and Spanish announcements. The signal was very strong as I passed through downtown Hartford. Heading west on I-84, the signal faded out about 5 miles west of downtown Hartford. I have heard a mystery Spanish station on 1710 in the recent past from home 17 miles southwest of Hartford, but have never been able to identify it.The format of the station I heard Saturday morning matches up with what I heard in the past, so I think that solves the mystery. Re: [IRCA] CC Skywave SSB second impressions
Hi Gary, I agree that the manual is misleading with regards to the SSB mode. As soon as I powered up the radio, I tried SSB on SW to see how it worked. Then I switched to AM, pushed the SSB button again and, Voila!, it worked on AM, too. Very nice! I also like that the Skywave SSB's telescoping antenna is longer (by 2.5 inches) than on the original Skywave. Even the packaging is nicer. The new Skywave box is a keeper, whereas the original Skywave's clear plastic package is not. And it was so cool to log a new station with the new radio while sitting in front of the tube watching Law & Order reruns! 73, Stan, WA1LOU On 11/18/17 2:46 PM, d1028g...@comcast.net wrote: Hi Stan, Thanks for your initial reports on the CC Skywave SSB model. Because of the model's SSB capability on MW, I'll go ahead and order one of the pricey models to check it out. My own interest in the model would be to use it as an SSB "spotting receiver" during overseas travel to places like Kona, Hawaii. [IRCA] ELAD FDM-S2/FDM-SW-2 .wav files
I own an FDM-S2/FDM-SW2 and have been making top-of-hour recordings of the AM/MW band for awhile. When I replay the recordings, I use the A and B buttons of the ELAD software to clip and save any new station ID's I encounter. Is there a way to convert these clipped .wav files so that they can be played on generic media/audio players? (They don't seem to be normal ..wav files because none of the audio apps I tried can play them.) The only solution I have come up with is to use a computer system recorder app to record the computer audio output while playing the clippings with the ELAD software, but this seems to me to be a clumsy way of doing it and it sounds to me like some quality is lost in the process. There has got to be a better way! Thank you in advance! Stan, WA1LOU P.S. I posted this question on the ELAD mail list, but the answers I received there did not directly answer my question! ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] new loggings
LW/MW/AM band conditions were very good last night. On LW, there were a slew of navigational beacons – all Canadian and all already in the log. But I did log a new broadcast station on 234 kHz at 0255 UTC: Broadcasting Center Europe (BCE) in Beidweiler, Luxembourg, transmitting 1500 kW about 3,686 miles to the northeast. The audio was weak, but good enough to ID the station. On MW/AM, I heard plenty, but all already in the log. So I replayed my UTC top-of-the-hour recording and worked my way up the band recording any station identifications I encountered. When I got to 760 kHz, there was WJR loud and clear as expected. WJR is the only nighttime station I have in the log for 760. It is so dominant, that I never expect to hear anything else. So I listened for their station ID, which was followed by a pause and during the pause, I heard the station ID for WETR in Knoxville, Tennessee transmitting 2.4 kW 703 miles to the southwest! WETR is a daytime-only station and this logging was almost an hour after Knoxville sunset, but I'm not complaining! Equipment used was the ELAD FDM-S2/SW2 receiver and an 80-meter inverted Vee antenna. [IRCA] old is new
After some needed hardware arrived last week, I finally got my 35-year-old Hy-Gain 18AVQ vertical back on the air. On the AM/MW front, I was immediately rewarded with three new entries in the log! Compared to the 80-meter inverted Vee, the noise floor of the vertical is much lower, while signal strength on the vertical is slightly lower on the vertical with most stations. On the other hand, switching back and forth between antennas, I heard a handful stations on the each antenna that I could not hear at all on the other. Anyway, here are the new stations I heard with the vertical: *WMBS*on 590 kHz in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, transmitting 1 kW, 376 miles to the west-southwest. *WSLB* on 1400 kHz in Ogdensburg, New York, transmitting 1 kW, 248 miles to the north-northwest. *WJFK*on 1580 kHz in Morningside, Maryland, transmitting 50 kW, 282 miles to the southwest. [IRCA] lots of carriers

I never saw anything like it and at first, I thought there was something wrong with my radio because there were also carriers on 725, 898, 933, 966, 1173, 1208, 1312, 1346, 1415, 1553, 1588 and 1622 that don't match up with any normal broadcast channels I am aware of. [IRCA] Eclipse radio conditions
I made over a dozen ELAD FDM-S2 recordings of the AM broadcast band during the eclipse and I will review them later. I also had my C.Crane CC Skywave receiver outdoors with me during the event. I programmed six frequencies from thislist <http://www.skyandtelescope.com/2017-total-solar-eclipse/how-to-hear-the-solar-eclipse/>into the Skywave – 650, 670, 750, 1040, 1190 and 1510 – frequencies that are dead air during daylight here. I heard nothing on these frequencies during the hour leading up to the eclipse maximum here in Wolcott (CT) at 1845 UTC. About 15 minutes later, I could hear a week signal on 1510 that became stronger during the next ten minutes – strong enough to be intelligible and identifiable: WRNJ in Hackettstown, NJ, transmitting 2,000 watts, 113 miles to the west-southwest. The signal peaked at about 1915 UTC and then slowly faded into the noise disappearing completely at about 1930 UTC. I hear WRNJ most nights, but never during daylight, so I assume the eclipse's "nighttime" conditions were the reason I heard it this afternoon. Probably the best night all winter for me! 162 – Allouis, France, IPHA data, strong steady signal 183 – Sauberg, Germany, with a weak carrier 198 – BBC Radio 4, with very good audio 207 – Iceland or Morocco, with a weak carrier 252 – Radio Algerienne, Tipaza, Algeria, with varying audio, music was better than voice but the language barrier probably had something to do with my ear's interpretation of the audio 585 – Unknown station with a solid carrier 684 – Unknown station with a solid carrier and very weak, unintelligible audio 855 – Unknown station with a solid carrier Stan, WA1LOU Downtown Wolcott, CT ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Oh what a night!
Best conditions I've heard in years overnight! TAs on 162, 171 198, 216 and 252 were loud and clear. Logged a bunch of new navigational aid and AM radio stations. Dunno about Parallels "many years ago," but there are no USB port fast enough issues in the current Parallels that I am using. Bill: Curious... why is it a "bad idea" using Windows 10 on the Mac? There’s a good help section on-line and the Bootcamp software is good about talking you through installation. Once thing you should keep in mind is that ‘newer’ MacBooks and MacOS will force you into using Win 10 — bad idea! Hi Saul, I have a circa 2013 15-inch MacBook Pro and have been using it with the ELAD FDM-S2 SDR receiver running the ELAD Windows application (FDM-SW2) using Parallels Desktop with Windows 10 on my Mac. The system has run flawlessly since I put it together in June. Nice thing about Parallels is that you run the Mac OS and Windows simultaneously and can switch between OS's instantly. Re: [IRCA] 1710
Thanks, Russ. I listened to the recording again and noticed that the second song I heard was actually in English -- sounded like Aretha Franklin. And the first song was probably in Spanish as I recognized a couple of words per my two years of high school Spanish in the previous century. [IRCA] Headphones for Drake R8
--- Begin Message --- As the new DX season gets underway I'd like to get a decent pair of headphones for my Drake R8. I've used cheap iPod type phones up until now & I'm thinking some good ones might provide better clarity for my aging ears. I'd also prefer not to spend more than $100 for them if something decent is available in this price range. What I'm looking for is the ability to hear DX in the noise as clearly as possible rather than good music frequency response. If both are possible with the same headphones at low cost, I'd be thrilled, but I'd imagine that's like expecting to win the lottery! Any suggestions anyone would have would be greatly appreciated! 73,Stan WeisbeckSpokane, WA--- End Message --- ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Be sure to register now for the Joint DX Convention Kansas City, September 9 to 11. [IRCA] The Good News
I bought an ELAD FDM-S2 SDR receiver at the Hamvention last month. I wanted to use the receiver with my MacBook Pro computer, so last week I installed Parallels on my MacBook Pro, installed Windows 10 on Parallels and finally, installed the ELAD software on Windows 10. WQFG689 is a TIS for Hudson County, NJ. Friday night, I tried recording the whole AM band for two minutes around 10 PM EDST. Then I spent a few hours listening to the recording and logged six new stations: - WNEB on 1230 kc in Southbridge, MA, transmitting 1 kW, 73 miles to the NE - WICH on 1310 kc in Norwich, CT, transmitting 5 kW, 45 miles to the WSE. - WEMG on 1310 kc in Camden, NJ, transmitting 250 W, 162 miles to the SW. - WWRU on 1660 kc in Jersey City, NJ, transmitting 10 W, 85 miles to the SW. - WTTM on 1680 kc in Lindenwold, NJ, transmitting 1 kW, 162 miles to the SW. - CKAT on 600 kc in North Bay, Ontario, 455 miles to the NW. [IRCA] Two 1510 loggings
Logged two new ones just before dawn on 1510 kc: *WFAI*on Thursday morning 1145 UTC transmitting gospel music with 2500 watts from Salem, NJ, 190 miles to the southwest. Elecraft KX3 radio and C.Crane CC twin coil ferrite antenna were the equipment. *WLAC*on Friday morning, 1125 UTC, transmitting 50,000 watts from Nashville,*830 miles*to the west-southwest. Began hearing WLAC as I pulled out of my driveway and continued hearing it until it was captured by WMEX about half way to work. Also heard WFAI briefly near the end of my 35-minute commute. Equipment was the stock radio and antenna in my 2007 Subaru Outback Sport. If I ever sell my Subaru, I hope I can keep the radio! [IRCA] long time, no post
I have not posted here much in awhile, but I am working from home today twiddling my thumbs waiting for some files from work to be e-mailed to me, so while I am waiting, I thought I'd post. A week or so ago, there was a brief discussion about the dearth of stations on 1710. That frequency is blank in my log, so I started monitoring 1710 intently for a couple of days and managed to hear the Springfield (MA) Armory National Historic Site TIS, 40 miles away. I logged number 300 in my AM log just before the new year. My main tools the past year were an Elecraft KX3, C.Crane Skywave and the stock radio in my 2007 Subaru Outback Sport. Antennas were a Terk Advantage, C.Crane Twin Coil Ferrite and a 40-meter inverted vee... the first two are indoors, the third is outdoors. My best loggings mileage-wise the past year were KXEL (996 miles from the Subaru on the way to work), WBOB (924 miles), three Cubans (1300 to 1400 miles). I also logged a bunch of distant low-power stations, but whenever I mention those, some folks chime in claiming that those stations must have been running daytime power, so I won't bother mentioning them. I plan to enhance my outdoor antenna farm after this winter ends. 73, Stan, WA1LOU ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] WBOB Test
I had my doubts about hearing WBOB here in Central Connecticut, but I stayed up anyway and was rewarded with a new log entry. I began hearing WBOB at 0516 UTC and monitored 600 kHz until 0605 UTC. During that time I heard voice and Morse Code station ID's, as well as, music (the "Price is Right" theme song), a variety of tone sweeps and telephone busy signals. WBOB was competing with local WICC and an unidentified Spanish station, but I managed to hear "something" from WBOB most of the 49 minutes I monitored 600 kHz. I recorded about ten minutes of the test with my iPad. I used an Elecraft KX3 with an 80-meter inverted Vee dipole most of the time, but the signal was so good that I tried listening with my C.Crane Skywave receiver using its stock internal antenna and heard a voice ID loud and clear. Great Fun! [IRCA] First Christmas music of the season heard on 1390.
--- Begin Message --- On 11/4 at around 2300 ELT, I heard my first Christmas music of the season on 1390. I wasn't able to ID them because they faded down & I had other things I needed to go & do but I'm pretty sure it was KLGN, Logan, Utah. KLGN isn't consistently there at night here but does show up relatively often. They are normally AC/EZL & use the slogan "Lite 103.3," promoting their FM translator: K277BD. Around 0900 ELT, 11/6, while driving to work I noticed my local KISC(FM) "Kiss 98.1" playing solid Christmas music which will, of course, continue through 12/25. I believe this is lucrative for them as they sell sponsorships for it & have been doing this for many years. I called my wife at lunchtime to inform her that Kiss FM had gone all Christmas music, preempting their normal "Lite Rock," & she was excited. Kiss FM is her favorite station anyway. I'm with Rick Dau that Christmas music should appear only after Thanksgiving, & then only mixed in with the regular music. My normal response to Kiss FM is to remove them from my car radio presets until 12/26, although I haven't done this yet. My favorite station is Kool 107-1, KPKL Deer Park-Spokane, WA, which plays oldies from the 50's to the 80's, including many I haven't heard on the radio in decades. Where else can I hear "Pictures of Matchstick Man" by Status Quo (1968) or "Bad Time" by Grand Funk Railroad (1975). For years I've yearned for an oldies station that didn't play the same 300 oldies over & over but instead played lots of the thousands of popular old rock songs & KPKL does. Sorry if I've veered too far from the DX topic, but at least I didn't talk about how my local grocery store had a giant Halloween candy display up the last week of August, & the day after Halloween replaced them with Christmas candy. [IRCA] KSLL 1080 cheating tonight!
KSLL 1080 Price, Utah, is supposed to sign off @ sunset but I'm hearing them @ 0145 ELT 9/11 using the slogan "Classic Rock 105" &, of course, playing classic rock from what sounds like a satellite service. They have an FM translator on 104.9 which should be the only thing on now. They are fading up & down here in Spokane but at times they're strong. They use the slogan "The Castle" at times, too. I hope you can catch them. Re: [IRCA] New to list
Hi Jim. I do realize that the powers may not be accurate, but what's a poor boy to do but assume that the stations are running legal power. However, it is a very legitimate point, so I think my loggings will now include the daytime power in parenthesis next to the nighttime power (or vice versa for daytime loggings). By the way, WJJL runs 1 kW during the day, so that is still a nice catch! And my best catch during my Dawn Patrol this winter was KCJJ in Iowa City, 950 miles to my west running 1 kW (10 kW). Also caught KXEL a couple of times 996 miles away, but they are running 50 kW (50 kW) LOL. Stan, WA1LOU On 3/31/2015 10:43 AM, James Renfrew wrote: Welcome, Stan. Glad to have you on the list. The night time powers you see listed for those stations MAY or MAY NOT be accurate in actual practice. It leads to considerable discussion on this list whether some stations actually turn down their power at night! We even see daytime only operations sometimes running at night, usually due to the primary station being on FM, and someone at the station forgetting to turn off the AM at sundown. Also, at 6:00 AM, some stations have PSSA authorization to run a little more power than at night, but not full day power. Hi Kaz, I thought it might be CJWI, but I did not hang around to find out because my drive to work takes me into WPOP's best coverage area. Can't do much about the cheaters. So I just go by the book with my loggings and check to see what time is local sunrise at the station I'm logging in order to make the correct or should I say legal power entry. In addition, many stations come on at their 6 am with power day power. Some may not understand PSA powers and others may not care nor want to bother to switch from PSA to full power at sunrise. 73 KAZ -Original Message- From: Stan Horzepa stanz...@sbcglobal.net Sent: Mar 31, 2015 8:52 AM To: irca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: [IRCA] New to list New to list, joined last week, but have been DXing for awhile (like about 50 years). [IRCA] KLYC 1260 sign-off
I'm sad to hear of KLYC 1260 planning to leave the air. I can occasionally hear them here in Spokane, usually on SRS in the morning, when CFRN is not too strong. When I was attending Gonzaga University here in Spokane in the early 70's, one of my dormmates was from McMinnville had worked weekends at then KMCM, which was a country station at the time. He told me a story about being on the air there one Saturday night, probably in the summer of 1972, he sort of deviated from the normal format. He knew the owner was out of town beyond reception range, he therefore brought a stack of his favorite rock roll 45's began playing them on-the-air. The program director called him to find out what was going on he told the PD that they were the records provided there for him to play, he didn't realize there was a problem. According to what he told me, the PD bought his story just told him to be careful about what he played. Apparently, he didn't get in trouble for this. He I were both DJ's at our campus AM carrier current station: KZAG 700. I was jealous that he had professional experience, as I was a broadcast major wanted a radio career. I was able to do that after graduation, working first at KNOM 780, Nome, Alaska, beginning in June 1974. I hope someone buys KLYC returns it to the air.

[IRCA] Classical music on 1260
Isn't 1260 Beverly Hills (Los Angeles),CA, back to programming classical music? I think their calls may be KMZT (K-Mozart) again, too. They were KGIL the last I heard about them. I'm going down there for a short vacation with my girlfriend next week so I'll tune in and see what they are doing. DX has been fun here as of late. I've gotten two new ones: KROE 930 Sheridan, Wyoming on sunrise skip, and KMZQ 670 Las Vegas at night in KBOI's null while looking for WSCR Chicago. My favorite time to DX recently has been 0700 Pacific (1000 ELT) just after getting off work at my overnight shift at the hospital in Post Falls, Idaho, 25 miles east of Spokane. I seemed to have a pipeline to Wyoming a few days ago which allowed me to hear KROE. I also heard KHAT 1210, KPOW 1260, and KIML 1270. I'm pretty sure KTWO 1030 was in, too, but they are a pest for me at night. In spite of relatively close distance, Wyoming is a difficult state to DX from Spokane except for KTWO. I'm happy that I've managed to hear 10 stations from there this season, which is a record for me. My most wanted from there now is KWTY 1470. With 500 watts non-directional at night, I would think they would show up sometime, in spite of stiff competition from KELA(WA), CJVB(BC), and KBSN(WA) on day pattern. KBSN is a former employer that I worked at in 1976-77 when they were KSEM. By coincidence, I'm in Moses Lake, home of KBSN, visiting my girlfriend. It's strange spending time in Moses Lake again as in some ways it's like it was in 1977, but in other ways it's very different. The town has grown from 11,000 people to 20,000 in that time, and spread out considerably in area. The mightly twin towers of 1470 on Marsh Island, right next to Interstate 90, are still shining brightly, even though some vandals knocked them down once about ten years ago. Their only AM competition, KWIQ, was a daytimer on 1260 back then and is now full-time on 1020 with a sports format //KKRT 900 Wenatchee,WA. KBSN is newstalk. In 1977, KBSN was soft rock and KWIQ was country//FM 100.3 which is still country. KBSN now has an FM, KDRM 99.3, which is Top 40 rock, which is essentially the format KSEM had in 1977. The FM antenna is on one of the previously mentioned twin towers. Curiously, I never KWIQ 1260 from Spokane (105 miles east) but 1020 is commonly heard there. [IRCA] Three letter calls on TV
To confirm for Pat Martin, the KHQ calls do live on on Channel 6 here in Spokane. I guess I should say digital Channel 6 because they actually broadcast on RF Channel 15. I was sad when 590 dropped the KHQ calls back in the early 80's. They were still co-owned with KHQ-TV, but the owners put their radio stations up for sale and they sold pretty quickly. KHQ-FM 98.1 became KISC (Kiss FM) and still has those calls and slogan with a soft rock format. 590 became KLSN with the slogan Listen 5-90, but they later became KAQQ, and then several years ago, at least, they dropped the adult contemporary music format, becoming conservative talk, and took on their current calls of KQNT. I, like Pat Martin, wish that heritage stations would keep their three letter calls, and just change slogans if they change formats. I think it's still true, though, if radio and TV stations split ownership, they can't keep the same calls, except with special permission. I know KING-FM 98.1 Seattle, got special permission to keep its calls when it was sold off from KING-TV. I wish 1090 Seattle was still KING! [IRCA] Three letter calls
I think someone already mentioned that KGY 1240 Olympia, WA, is another three letter call on a local channel. I heard them in Spokane (300 miles away) for the first time only about a year ago. Doesn't KWG 1230 Stockton, CA, still exist? I've never heard them but I'd love to. My local KTRW 630 Opportunity, WA (suburb of Spokane) uses the slogan KTW I think as a reference to the old KTW 1250 Seattle. KTRW runs conservative talk and some religious programming. I actually worked for them back in the late 70s/early 80's when they were KZUN, initially running MOR (middle of the road) music and then went CW to compliment their then FM sister KZUN-FM 96.1, which had gone CW. 630 changed calls to KGGR while I was still there and took on an oldies format. This was in 1982 and I left in 1983 to work at KXLY 920 and KXLY-TV. 630 has been through numerous call changes and ownership changes since then. The KTRW calls were originally, in this market at least, on 970, which is now KTTO Sacred Heart (Catholic) radio. That was in 1988 when the station changed format to traditional country and used the slogan True Country. Prior to that, 970 was KZZU and simulcast then sister station KZZU-FM 92.9 with Top 40 music. KZZU(FM) is still Top 40. 96.1 FM here is back to CW, after at least a couple format changes over the years, with the call letters KIXZ and uses the slogan Kicks 96. [IRCA] Directional AM's in Alaska
I see Dennis in SW Washington indicated before I could that there is at least one directional AM in Alaska. The last I knew there were two, and the other one might be KJNP 1170 North Pole (near Fairbanks). I know they at least used to be, back in the '70s, beaming NW at night. I toured their facilities back in 1975 on my way back to the lower 48, after living in Nome and working for KNOM 780 for a little more than a year. Tom Busch, who passed away suddenly last month, was my boss for the latter part of time I was there. He was directly responsible for building KNOM from 1969-1971, left to work in Fairbanks 1973-75 at KIAK 970, and then returned to KNOM as GM from 1975-2005. He was very influential in Alaska radio and a wonderful guy to work for and work with. He was president of the Alaska Association of Broadcasters for a year and a member of the organization for decades. Nome's power is provided by diesel generators, and KNOM, I believe, still gets its power from the city, but has back-up generators at both the studio and transmitter sites. I still get KNOM's newsletter and I try to follow what's happening in Alaska radio. The last time I visited Nome was in 1992 but I hope to return again one of these days. Speaking of the power output of Alaska radio stations, KNOM looked into boosting power to 50kW from their present 25kw (days) some years back, but decided it was too expensive. KNOM is 25kw/14kw. They drop power at night to protect KCAM 790, Glenallen, Alaska. This time of year KNOM is on day power maybe 4 hours a day, but in June they are on day power about 21 hours a day! The difference between winter and summer daylight that far north is pretty amazing!
