Re: [IRCA] Last night TT'er on 740

2010-12-20 Thread Tom Jasinski
Last nights 740khz tone tester signal would peak to a good level, suspect
someone close. WVLN Olney, IL would be my first choice followed by WRPQ
from Baraboo. WVLN is due south and it fits the loop bearing. Much further
out and much likely could be WIRJ Humbolt, or WJIG Tullahoma.

Anyone want to hear this I'll send out a short clip - just let me know.

[IRCA] WHYL DX TEST wrapup

2009-03-16 Thread Tom Jasinski
Finished reviewing my recordings here for 1st hour of DX Test and captured
many details. Several voice ID's mentioning 960 WHYL, Carlisle, Pa. and
DX Test 2009 made it through (good solid ID at 00:34EDT). Several RR songs
were heard. The very slow, low, medium and high pitch morse code call
letters easily made it along with
the long set of sweeps. Announcer was very lively and at one point
mentioned
several listeners who had called in. Believe I read earlier that the band
pass for the audio had emphasis on the high freqs. and the higher pitch code
was very crisp and clear.

The WHYL antenna pattern does indeed have a sizeable lobe to the west. The
only interference here was KMA with intermittant poor/medium signals,
perhaps some WSBT with a mention of nearby Michigan City and a cuban with
the morse code RR on the minute.

Many thanks to all who but this together and those who participated. WHYL
was first heard here in 1987 but still needed for a verification.

[IRCA] Ground Resistance

2009-03-11 Thread Tom Jasinski
There has been some recent discussion about outdoor antennas and grounds.
No one has mentioned what a good ground RESISTANCE is. Here is my two cents
worth.

Since last fall I have been measuring ground resistance from four TEST
ground rods in my back yard. The rod specs are as follows; one 3/4 dia X
10 foot copper clad steel, one 5/8 dia X 8 foot copper clad steel, one 1/2
dia X 30 inch copper tubing (some people call it pipe) and one 5/8 X 24
copper clad steel.

This is what I read today for each of these rods using a 3 point method with
a BK Model 309 ground resistance meter.

10 footer has around 10 ohms

8 footer has around 23 ohms

30 incher has 166* ohms

24 incher has 175* ohms

In addition a new set of readings has been taken either daily or every other
day since last fall. Along with this am tracking ground temperature at the
surface and at 1 foot, 2 feet, 3 feet and 4 feet down in the soil, using
type K thermopcouples.

Each rod is also terminated with a length of #14 AWG copper wire and brought
into my basement to a central area. The five thermocouples also come in to
the same central area.

None of these rods are connected in any way to the electric service ground
which is completely separate.

The astericks above for the 30 rod and the 24 rod indicate that there is
considerable change in resistance due to frozen soil. This was a mild
winter (with only a few below zero days). My readings show that the soil
froze (frost line) down between one and two feet. The resistance readings
increased as the soil froze and lowered again when the frost thawed. For
example the resistance for the 24 rod increased from 166 ohms to 359 ohms
due to frozen soil. I was hoping for a colder winter (more sub zero days)
where I had suspected an even greater change in both of the short rods.
These two rods are purposely short to trend as the frost line gets deeper in
the soil.

I intend to trend both resistance and temperature for all the rods for
another couple of years and at time will share the data with you.

In conclusion I would always recommend a 10 foot rod for a good ground
(around 10 ohms in black dirt/clay, moist soils, higher in dry, sandy, rocky
soils). These values will vary with type of soil and moisture content. If
a second rod is ever used space it 10 to 15 feet from the first. As a side
note; some electric utility companies who require very low resistance
grounds around substations and generating plants have driven (when required)
special rods to a depth of 90 (ninety) feet!

Just received notice from High Criteria that a new version (V7.1) of

An auto-stop recording feature that lets you stop recording when no sound
is being recorded for some time (great for unattended recording of tapes and

Re: [IRCA] UPCOMING WOON 1240 DX TEST

2008-12-30 Thread Tom Jasinski
Though Morse Code can be easily identifible something with a little more
punch is needed to hear a DX Test from futher away on a crowded channel. My
recommendations are to use sweep tones and staircase waves if at all
possible. As others have mentioned the sweeps and staircase waves really
punch through the mush on a crowded channel. One such experience here is
from the WKDK 1240khz DX Test from Newberry, SC back in Feb. 2008. The
morse code was buried in the mud and only bits and pieces were heard. But
the sweeps and staircase waves made it easily here on the peaks (the high
frequency
portions of both type of wave forms).

We all know that there are fewer and fewer tests each year. Just trying to
make it easier for more DX'ers to have a chance at hearing a test and in
this case from a rare state. My two cents worth..

well with new format. Morse Code LYQ followed by male voice announcement
mentioning complete location, FAA ID, followed by local weather conditions
(Ceiling, Wind Speed, Wind Direction and altimeter reading) but no data
follows. The announcement mentions Missing after each catagory. Taped
loop lasting about 24 seconds. Are they still testing this format? Heard
with near perfect copy, suspect either very good DX conditions yesterday
morning or they have raised power levels? Previous format was Morse Code
with a pause repeated about every 8 seconds. As usual you need careful
tuning due to close proximity with several stations on 530Khz. Appears to
be best before sunrise here in midwest.

[IRCA] Merry Christmas to All

2007-12-25 Thread Tom Jasinski
Merry Christmas to all and best wishes for a DX filled New Year.

Here is my wish list;

1. An IBOC free AM Band

2. A Quiet Sun, free of Aurora disturbances for good northerly DX.

3. An Active Sun, for good, strong Aurora, for southern DX. (One of each
please)

4. A good DX Get-to-Gether to swap DX stories gear.

5. Get that rare QSL, soon!

6. Hear the few remaining states (for me Oregon, Alaska and Hawaii) to get
all 50.

7. A good antenna with deep and perfect nulls

8. A DX season full of good, easily heard DX Tests from far away.

9. Good DX clubs with friendly people who have plenty of DX to report.

10. That perfect receiver with built in MP3 recording capability (no
cables, no need for a computer)

  running 25w from 353703n 860504w from a 125' tower (I think he said
it was a flattop). It took a lightening hit a few days ago so is
currently off the air. They are in the process of adding some ground
radials. The phone # is 931/728-6087 and according to the web site,
it is manned from 9pm-3am EST. And finally, it should come as no
great surprise that it has already been logged out west (in OR) by

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] All-day DX

2007-11-28 Thread Tom Jasinski
As we approach the winter solstice, now less than a month away, there will
be increased opportunities for daylight DX such as that listed below.
Sunrise conditions will linger longer and sunset CX will begin earlier in
the day. And the further north you are the better the conditions will get.
With sunspot cycle nearing the low point it should open up some very good
daylight DX. So for the DX'ers new to the hobby try and take advantage of
this once a year phenomeon.

I was traveling for work today, but heard some interesting things...

 Around 10am (Jamestown, New York)
 WHAS 840 local like
WLW 700 in strong with a music station topping it at times
WHLO 640 Akron way over Toronto
1030 Point Pleasant WV in super strong

 3pm (Jamestown NY)
1510 with Sean Hannity: an early WLAC?

3:30pm or so (between Dunkirk NY and Hamburg NY on I-90)
 KSTP 1500 MN VERY strong
WMDB 1470 Peoria IL legal at 4:00
WAIK 1590 Galesburg IL calls just after 4:00 (biggest surprise of the day)
(Curtis, I should mention to you that I have bad luck with IL more often!)
Coming back from Jamestown at this time last year I also had similar good
conditions to the west (nabbed 790 Fargo ND in a similar spot on I-90).
If
I hadn't seen the good reports today I would think that location favors
the
west because of Lake Erie being close by in that direction! I think this
is
 probably coincidence though

8pm or so - not much interesting, but
910 had WWWR Roanoke VA (3WR), day power??
Also WABI Bangor ME has Maine Brown Bears vs. Rhode Island
If anyone wants to try for these two stations...
Disney was also briefly in on this channel (Flint), which lately has been
mostly just Maine, with SS far behind. (VEN?)

[IRCA] WLPO DX TEST - Visited the Station this morning while DX Test was on!

2007-10-27 Thread Tom Jasinski
I was at the station during the last half of the 1/2 hour DX test this
morning. Chatted with Steve Volger, the CE who was has been at WLPO for 40
years! Steve mentioned that while the power for this DX Test was at 1kw
daytime level, the pattern was nighttime. WLPO has a sharp null at 79
degrees amied at Waukegan, IL to protect WKRS 1220Khz.

While there at WLPO during the test only one E-mail was received, from Pat
in Seaside. Only
one call came in a few minutes after the end of test from California.

Took a photo of Steve Volger sitting at his computer with the E-mail from
Pat Martin on the monitor.

WLPO is an hour drive west of here. Before leaving home I setup R8A
receiver and recorder. Copied a somewhat poor/medium signal under WKH
from Cleveland, and the IBOC hash from 1210 WPHT.

WLPO's daytime signal is quite strong here so they are unneeded for my log.
First heard and verified WLPO back in 1965.

I neglected to check down on the longwave band last night, but there was
a bit of TA activity on mediumwave for the first time in a couple of
months. I was getting definite audio (talk by man and some bits of
music) on 684-presumably Spain though I couldn't ID the language. There
seemed to be time pips at the top of the hour (11pm Central, 0500 UTC).
It then faded somewhat, but for about 10 minutes it was strong and
steady enough for the sync detector on the little Sony 7600GR to stay
locked. There were a few hets elsewhere (like 999) but no audio that I
could find. But at least that's something-signals from across the
Atlantic had been deader than the proverbial hammer around here for
weeks on end.

From 10:20 PM EST (0320 UTC) and continuing 10:45 PM EST (0345UTC) both
Germany on 183 kHz and Algeria on 252 kHz are booming in. Both in
French. Both with huge signals on the longwire and/or loop, but in
addition, I am hearing perfectly readable audio from both on a
barefoot Sony 2010, and a consumer Grundig portable. No external
antenna needed on either. The Grundig is a run of the mill portable, not
a communications receiver. These stations are strong right now.
Try for them if you have longwave. I don't know how long conditions will

 late
October/early November. Dunno who the second unid is - there's a
 third
station there, but can't completely pin down the format yet, but it's
either another ocuntry or Southern Gospel. First noted around 1940.

*** Correction - tjhis wasn't 'live' @ 2010, rather playing a recording
from 1928-58; first noted time also would have been about 1920.

Another station had bubbled up by 1950, sportstalk, displacing the 3rd
unid music station. No ID there as yet either.

Good Aurora CX here with complete loss of WJR 760 with a Latin in their

According to a post on the WTFDA list, a story in the Bloomington
Pantagraph, and the station's own website, WHOW AM 1520 and FM 95.9,
Clinton IL, is off
the air. The stations' 400-foot tower collapsed early Friday morning
12/1,
the result of the massive ice storm that went through Central Illinois.
According to station management, it may be a week before the stations
return to the
 air.

[IRCA] Tone Testers on 1610/1020 and 590 - Direction Finding - other options

2006-12-02 Thread Tom Jasinski
We need to refine our direction finding capabilities. My I suggest that
instead of using compass angles from your location use the deviation angle
to a known station transmitter site instead. Transmitter site coordinates
are very accurate. Get a null on a big power house and then retune and
adjust antenna for a null on the unknown signal. Anyone with a Quantum
loop or equivalent or a good quality portable radio can easily do this.

For example the test tone on 1020, report your bearing relative to KDKA,
KYW, WBAL or other easily heard powerhouse in the vicinity. From my
location the
signal from the tone tester on 1020 is about ten degrees south of bearing to
KDKA. The
station on 1610 was a few degrees south of bearing to WTAM on 1100.

The map created by Jim Tonne looks good and is a great idea, lets give
him more accurate information to use for a better fix on the tone testers.
Anyone with ideas or suggestions to improve on this are welcome.

The 1020Khz Tone tester has a bearing from here about 10 degrees south of

The tone is strong here in Maryland and has been overwhelming my
local TIS about 1500 feet from here. It is hard to get a good bead
on it, but it seems to be between 160 and 220 degrees from here
 (mostly south). 11/28 0600
