Re: [IRCA] (New) Seoul AM Radio Listening Guide, etc.

2019-01-31 Thread bill [his.com]
I can only echo Nick’s comments Chris — what a great page. It’s going to take
some time to explore all the things you’ve got here.

And what a great resource for helping ID Asian MW stations! Looking forward to
using it on some real, live DX soon!

Thanks for your efforts!

Just barely there on QH KiwiSDR at 1320utc.

Geez, that WAS fun! May have to go over to TC Williams HS and try that again.
Almost as fun as bowtie-in-the-woods at the Virginia Theological Seminary …
until they chased me out. :-(

The ‘DX van’ still exists but being on furlough I’m thinking more of a trip to
Fleeton, VA for a DKAZ-antastic solution!

From the midwest you’re best bet is to ‘aim east’ and keep checking for the
night or two when ‘Yankee Doodle’ is audible thru WCKY just prior to VOA’s

Re: [IRCA] [nrc-am] Perseus and Jaguar?

2018-11-29 Thread bill [his.com]
As long as we’re discussing Jaguar ...

I always felt like I was DXing through a microscope with it. While other
programs default to either a waterfall or peak-and-valley graph of a hunk of
spectrum, Jaguar defaults to a microscopic view of the frequency you’re DXing.

I have used both full-bore Jaguar [a few years ago or more] and Jaguar Lite and
was never able to overcome the learning curve with either.

Like Chuck said though, I do go back to Jaguar Lite every now and then to
review wav files to see if I’ve missed something.

I have never really used the full power of Jaguar — particularly the analysis
tools and such — though I REALLY liked the full-featured Mestor built-in that
included all the things I wish the stand-alone version released years ago
leaves out.

It was if Jaguar required a certain ’style’ of very serious DXing that I was
just no in-sync with. My fault, not theirs.

Re: [IRCA] Kauai Island AM-DXing.. Know Before You Go (Conclusion)

2018-11-21 Thread bill [his.com]
I’d like to 2nd Nick’s comments Gary. There were a few times I thought of you
there in Hawaii with a souped up portable radio and modest sized FSL and
compared it to freezing my butt off in Maine trying to keep up two huge DKAZ
antennas in a very unfriendly environment. Then I got under the quilts at
night and let the SDR do the work and knew I’d made the right choice. The only
thing worse than having to keep a big antenna up is having to actually DX out
there live!

Thanks again for the write up and exposing us all to some pretty amazing DX!

Re: [IRCA] DKAZ and Flag data

2018-10-25 Thread bill [his.com]
Thanks for running this Chuck and to Nick for making the results readable.

I’ll repeat a request I made a few days ago - any chance of adding a column for
1MHz?

My impression is that there is not a linear degradation in gain on the DKAZ but
that it falls off more rapidly below 700 or 800 kHz. Therefore I’m betting a
run at 1MHz would have similar values to that at 1.5MHz.

[IRCA] Grayland, WA & Florence, OR DXpedition - August 5 - 12

2018-08-19 Thread bill [his.com]
I visited 2 rentals in Grayland, Washington and near Florence, Oregon between
August 5 - 12. At both I erected a 160' DKAZ pointing roughly 255 deg. with
Vactrol termination.

You can see and hear what I heard on this webpage:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_grayland18.php

I'm still working through Perseus wav files so the page will change over the
next few weeks.

Highlight was hearing Gold FM from Fiji on 990 kHz. Low point was having a deer
or elk run thru the antenna on the last day of the DXpedition ruining reception.
Note to self: always check antenna prior to sunrise.

Reception conditions throughout were much more Asian than I'm used to from
previous summer trips to the same locations over the past several years. May
be an
indication that we're at or near the minimum of the current cycle?

For those interested, I'm trying a new strategy for working through wav files -
going through 200 kHz at a time for each day of the 1300utc TOH file. That's
roughly sunrise on the west coast this time of year and based on past experience
is the best time to hear 'good stuff' and catch IDs. When I find something
interesting I'll have to delve into wav files before or after 1300 but this
first-pass will guide where to look/listen next.
