Hey Colin:

Congratulations! I too have thought about getting at least a first-level
license, and here you are having accomplished it - well done!

Kevin

There really isn't anything hard about getting your ticket. I have an extra,
here in the U.S. is the highest ticket to have. I got my ticket back when
you had to do 13 and 20 wpm on CW.
I found it mostly very easy. Today anyone in the U.S. can get ticket, as it
is only warmed over CB radio, just sign your name and get a license. I bet
that even illegal aliens can get one, just sneak across border and say ci,
ci! I have had a license for 43 years.

Re: [IRCA] KYES TV Anchorage AK OT

2008-10-08 Thread k4ape

I just heard watching the Anchorage news that TV station KYES Anchorage
has filed for Chapter 11. The reason, is they only get 12 hours a day of
Network programming and they have to buy the othe 12 hours and cannot
afford it. They will stay on the air, but are looking at a bailout.
So our economy is even affecting broadcasting.

That really isn't a problem. Why not use the 12 hours of network programing
and then sign off the air at midnight like TV did in the old days. You don't
need Television 24/7.

In fact outside of the Dallas Cowboys and TVDX, you don't need TV at all.

Use to do outside sales for KOSA-7, a CBS affiliate in Odessa, TX. We signed
of at midnight and came back on at 0700. Why not??

Re: [IRCA] Nothing New at Sunset tonight....but ONE NEW STN late last night........

2008-09-17 Thread k4ape

Hi Rob-
Yes, I have an idea how you feel. For past 2 weeks, conditions have been
very good here, but nothing new for logs.

Tonight starting around 2000 EWT, had Trans-World Radio in again at a very
nice level, but did not report it as it has been reported to death.

Best thing heard tonight was probably 800 WSVS Crewe, VA heard under CKLW
for a RELOG around 1945 EDT.
WSVS has been very good on 800 in the fades of TWR, here tonight. They play
good classic country.

Have been listening for WAMG on 890, but no luck as WLS is to strong.

Good luck and 73's

Re: [IRCA] Pleasantly Plump Radios

2008-09-16 Thread k4ape

Just have to mention that you boys don't have the foggiest idea of what
aheavy radio is!

Use to own the Comanche transmitter made by Radio Laboratories, now that was
a heavy piece of equipment. All tubes with a power transformer that had to
weigh at lease 50 lbs. The rig must have weighted at lease 100 lbs total.

Had the matching receiver, the Apache, and that thing alone had to weight 50
lbs. Again all tubes and wires. My operating table was made from 4x4 planks
and 3/4 in plywood.
Also had the SSB converter, a unit outside the transmitter that weighted 28
lbs.

Traded it all in on the Drake C line in 1973.

Not to sure, but I think this equipment out weighted the R-390's.

Willis
Old Fort, TN

Greetings everyone,

Nice touch on the Extremely Heavy Radio e-mails, Bob and the group.

Mine don't fall in that category, hence the Pleasantly Plump moniker.

#1 is a Grundig Satellit 800 Millenium weighing in at 14-15 pounds.

#2 is an Ace Type V Regenerative Receiver manufactured by the Precision
Equipment Company, Powel Crossley, Jr., President. The radio itself
doesn't

weigh that much, but I suspect that coming up with a 200 volt DC power
supply will be the back breaker.

P.S. if anyone has info on how to use it, they would be forever in my
gratitude.

[IRCA] Thoughts on 500Kw watt radio stations

2008-09-06 Thread k4ape

Why is radio against me?

The other day Saul and I had a discussion about the fact that there is
nothing to listen to on AM radio. AM BCB radio is pretty B-O-R-I-N-G! A
person can hear just so much of Rush,

and other liberal talkers, just so much country, soul and noise.

However, with football season upon us, and I now have a chance to hear all
my favorite teams that are not shown on television here in the Chattanooga
market. I have been waiting all week to hear the University of Texas game
against UTEP in El Paso, TX. You would think that the station to listen to
would be WOAI-1200 as they carry all the games for UT and all the games for
the Dallas Cowboys.

NOT SO! Wouldn't you know, on 1200, of all the times to _CHEAT_ WJES would
have to be on from out of South Carolina, with some type of crappy music. A
10Kw daytimer has to pick tonight to cheat! Haven't heard from them in over
4 months, but tonight of all nights they have to cheat!

So, I tune around and find that ESPN is playing the Texas game on WMVP-1000
from Chicago. GREAT! I say to myself. But that is short lived as XEEP from
Mexico is fading in and out on top of them and there is a strong het on 999.
All of this would normally be fine, BUT WHY NOW?

What this shows to me is, there needs to be a few, not many, 500,000 watt
stations located around the country -- as there was in the mid 30's. The
stronger power would make it possible to over come foreign QRM, propagation
conditions and semi-local cheaters.

Wouldn't need but maybe 6 stations all total.

Stations I think that would make good 500Kw broadcasters. Based on program
format and location.

WOAI-1200 San Antonio, TX.
WLW-700 Cincinnati, OH
WMVP-1000 Chicago, IL
WBAP-820 Ft. Worth, TX
KYW-1060 Philadelphia, PA or
WPHT-1210 Philadelphia
WBZ-1030 Boston, MA
WSB-750 Atlanta, GA
KFI-640 Los Angeles, CA
KNBR-680 San Francisco, CA
KSL-1160 Salt Lake City, UT
WLAC-1510 Nashville, TN
WAQM-560 Miami, FL

This is just a list, other stations might do a better job with programming,
etc., than what I have listed here.

PLEASE, do not write me with dumb comments like, Why don't you get
satellite radio? or Buy cable television or Get Direct TV I do not have
money for such luxuries nor are they available to people who live this area.

Thank you for your time,
Willis

I had a conversation today with Jim Munger with Trans Radio Radio, he
replied they are in fact running a 100kw transmitter in Bonaire. They
have

installed a Kintronics DA-2 phasor to feed their four tower array.
The two markets they are targeting these days are South America and Cuba
with the two different patterns.

Thanks Jerry, I have been hearing a lot more over the past few years than I
did in the 60's and 90's.

I use to hear then nightly in Dallas back in the early 60's. Have QSL's for
both the SW and BCB transmitters.

[IRCA] WDOD-1310 format change

2008-08-29 Thread k4ape
Well I guess it had to happen. WDOD 1310, Chattanooga, TN has changed formats.
Seems like every time a station comes up with anything good, it won't be long
before they will self-destruct themselves.

Twenty years ago, they were Music of your life format. Then they tried airing
Air America and that went over like a lead baloone. Then they tried local
events and sports, mixed with MOYL music, and that was OK, but did not play
well with locals. Then it was Ruby 1301. NOW that was the right format for this
market. That was good for about 2 years, till today.

Today, 29 August 2008, at 1630 EWT, I tuned in to find they have hit rock
bottom for music. They were 'Ruby 1310' and now they call themselves The true
oldies channel- Labor day weekend oldies playing the worst of the worst.

Slowly but sure the local radio market is marching farther into hell!
In the Chattanooga, TN market, there is no reason left to even own a radio.

[IRCA] CW on 1360 over WSAI

2008-08-29 Thread k4ape
At 2315 I have CW on 1360Kc. This is the same type of CW that gets reported
around this time each year. But normally it's in the 1000 to 1150Kc range. This
is the first time I have had this high in the band.

The CW is very slow and is not of the international morse type nor is it of the
old contental type. Just dots and dashes that doesn't make much sense. At
times it is over WSAI from Cincinnati, OH.

Surely, if it was an image from a ham it would still follow the international
morse code, wouldn't it?

Anyone else hearing this?

They don't have to say their call letters but once a day. As far as I
know,

Canadian stations are only requried to ID with call letters once in a 24
hour period from 12mid to 12mid.

1070 WKIIFLSOLANA2200 17/08/08
At 2200 heard an ID and start of the news. America's best music, WKII, Fort

Then they were covered with WFLI Chattanooga. At 2209 they are back up on
top on the channel with a Sinatra song. [WM-TN]

Both stations are weak with rapid QSB. This is the first time I have logged
this station, and it was just be luck. I wWas tuning across 1070 and heard
the ID. They seem to be doing a good job with only 260 watts. But conditions
are good at the moment with no QRN.

12/16/57 equipped only with a small table model radio (forget brand name)

Let me get my two cents in on this thread.
I am about 150 miles south of WIRV. I hear them at lease once or twice a
month here in Old Fort, TN, and they do run day power sometimes at night.
Not always. They use to be in here every night, and I do believe they have
gotten a handle on what ever was their problem, as they use to be nightly
visitor here. Now only at times.

My major 1550 stations is the one out of Tampa, FL area in Spanish. The
station that Castro loves to jam. I can hear the jammer almost nightly.

Thank you for your time,

I would guess WIRV has been running day power at night for at least 5 or 6
years. I used to hear them on all my business trips to Atlanta back in

The Tri City AM network .have a three city ID with WEKY 1340 Richmond,

Re: [IRCA] UNID CW Station on 1060

2008-05-31 Thread k4ape

I'm hearing a station playing country music (today's new hit
country) on 1060 tonight, presumably a satellite-fed daytimer on
late. No local content heard, and at 2300 EDT there was dead air
where the ID insert should've been. This is definitely not CKMX, and
is probably not one of the stations that simulcasts an FM. That
leaves WKNG in GA as a prime suspect, but there are a few other
possibilities. Anybody else hearing this one?

I am not hearing any CW. But on 1060, I do hear WLON, mixed with what I
think is XEEP playing classic jazz and a station in a lingo that might be
French. Tis evening I have a southern enhancement with lots of stations from
Cuba, Mexico and who knows where else. KYW just poped up out of nowhere and
faded.

But no CW.

Hey Willis, just curious. Waylon Willie originally recorded this
song-Luckenbach, Texas. It's about a yearly gathering taking place in
that town-in the Fredericksburg/Kerrville area.
Is Merle joining Willie for a new version or did you just mix him up with
Waylon?

Don-
Please forgive. That was the worse written report I believe I have ever
sent.
That was after I had no sleep for almost two days. I finally went to bed at
0600 Sunday morning and sleep till 1400.

Yes, it is Waylon and not Merle. I have been to Luckenbach, Texas, many
times.

The wife is from just south of their at Kerrville.

However, unlike most people on this list, I can proudly say, I am a native
Texan.

At night they have been covering my semi-local WDOD-1310. I do believe they

Your 1370 is, very sure, WDEF. WDEF I have never heard a local ad on WDEF.

KIVY-1290 will leave the transmitter on all night, from time to time. They
will cover up Hickory, NC.

Re: [IRCA] WGIV-1370

2008-05-08 Thread k4ape

One wonders here. WGIV has been a frequent abuser in the past.
Yes, they have, however, they have been VERY good in the past year. I
haven't heard them in a while at night.

they're 16 kw days

Yes, they are listed as 16kw.

I don't think you'd have much QSB at your distance and they'd be a major
presence on the channel if full day power.
Not totally true. WSB-750 is about the same distance from me. They run 50kw
and do get VERY DEEP fads with them. WGIV is a station that is just not
heard here on repeated basis. They have been heard for the past 6 nights,
even into 0300 and later. I think that some one just for to throw the
switch.

Kaz, you been AM BCB DXing a long time. I think you know how to tell when a
station is on day power or not. Here we have WDEF just to the south of me
and WCAO down in Florida, they dominate the frequency, when WGIV is on
daypower they will fade. BUT, last night there was a lot QSB all over the
band. The F layer must have been active.

Also, I wish there was a way with e-mail to really describe what is heard,
as far as a decription of propagation conditions are concerned.

It's
certainly possible at your distance to have them fade in and out using 45
watts. But if you continue to note them strong for a few nights, one can
certainly suspect something is amiss.

Willis's post is well written here !! As he simply suggests that they
may be on day power, rather than saying gotta be cheating ! my reply
is to suggest that I think if on day power they'd be all over the freq at
Willis' distance and that my experience indicates stations can get out on
low power, but don't dominate crowded regional in general, even when using
phased Bev-type antennas.

Sorry, it's hard to not make typos when your blind.

Secondly, the station runs few, if any commercials because the FM does so

Your so young!!

some I have are from the 40s 50s.
I was given a collection by the wife of W5CPW, of his QSL's from stations he
worked in 1928 to 1941. Major portion are 80 meter CW. Dick Weeks died in
1985 just 3 weeks after retiring.

I love to look back on so many neat old QSL cards from the past.
They do bring back, most times, good memories.

My QSL from the BBC dated in 1960 has picture of Big Ben and parliment on
it. I have walked across the bring in the picture and we walked up past Big
Ben and had tour of the BBC that afternoon. This was in June 1967.

Not only are they good for memories, they are good for remembering history,
which so many today seem not to care about.

[IRCA] CBA-1070 test

2008-04-07 Thread k4ape

1070 CBA NBMONCTON 0031 07/04/08
Heard very weak CW at 0031 with lots of QRM from WFLI in Chattanooga, TN and
ESPN radio in Indianapolis. This is definitely heard CW, and a weak sweep
tone following. Nothing heard since.

Re: [IRCA] Country music on 1120

2008-04-02 Thread k4ape

RY

I heard some country music on 1120 last night (shortly after turning off
my

computer for the night). The bearing on my loop antenna was towards the
southeast so either the Pennsylvania or North Carolina stations are both
possibilities. I stress the word possibilities because the 2006 NRC
directory shows both as daytimers, but nothing else even seems to come
close. Was able to somewhat null KMOX, but not completely, making this
logging extra difficult to hear.

[IRCA] 3 great reasons to won a radio

2008-04-01 Thread k4ape
With all the arguing and bitch'n going on, I thought I would post something
HAPPY and hope to change the mood of the group.

It is now a great time of the year to listening to the radio. It is baseball
season and the program material has just risen to it's highest level
possible.

THREE GREAT REASONS TO OWN A RADIO
1. DX
2. Baseball games
3. CHWO AM 740, Toronto, Ontario

I am listening to WFAN-660 New York and they have baseball! ESPN has begun
to play baseball and they sound even better than ever.

I love this time of year as boringball is going away and the 'boys of the
summer'

return. Baseball is second best reason to own a radio!

Then count in CHWO-740 add you never need to have a TV.

What more can a person want out of life!

Re: [IRCA] 3 great reasons to won a radio

2008-04-01 Thread k4ape

WFAN for me is often not very listenable. Now WLW is.

I wish WLAC had the Braves...

Now that would be great! I second the montion! I would be happy if
WSB-750 would get the braves back. But, I do have two good stations for the
Braves. WYYU-FM in Dalton, GA and WCLE-FM in Cleveland, TN, so the Braves
are covered.

KDKA still carries the Pirates and has a good signal in here, WLW has the
Reds, WGN does a good job into here with Cubs, and there are other stations
all over the south with baseball. Even WTAW-1620 has Texas AM baseball.

Powell it is everywhere!

Gee, where do I start? Education, as when I was in college I wrote
Radio Moscow about the czars in Russia as I did a term paper on the
subject. I received a nice 4 page single spaced typed letter giving me a
lot of history on the subject. I got an A in the course. Much of the
knowledge I have received over the years was from radio. Today, radio,
and worldwide satellite, radio TV.
Pat, I also wrote Radio Moscow in 1959. I got a great QSL and, as I
requested, a nice bag of used Russian stamps. I still have both.

Many of us cannot afford to travel worldwide. Listening to stations
all over is a real treat. Be it Hohhot, China; Shillong India, or Cebu
Philippines. Then to top it off, getting the QSL from the station.
I listened to SW and AM in the late 50's and wanted to travel. So I joined
the navy, and all I got to see was the sea. Been to a lot of countries and
on ham radio worked a few, (Have QSLs from only 135 that I worked on 40 CW,
all from Texas.

Add to that, all of the enjoyment I have received listening to all of
the music from around the world. That alone has changed my interest in
music. Often, I will record hours of pop music from different stations
and listen to them in the van. Driving on trips, I have listened to
tapes of FM 94 Bangkok, FM 96 Oaxaca, and others.
I use to record on a reel to reel, but when the first wife left me, she
destroyed all the tapes and I have never seen the recorded again. But at
lease it is worth it, I don't have to see her.

I could go on and on, but radio has really had a huge effect n my
life.
I learned radio repair in my teens, and this helped me into Radar A school
in the navy.

Yes, radio has been a big help to me in my well as a lot fun.

I am sure you QSLed the 1310 WRR, right. The only thing left of WRR is the
FM and think they are no longer owned by the city of Dallas.

It is a far cry from the days of Jim Lowe and Big Tex.
