Re: [IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 8-4

Gary, that was More FM at on 531 kHz around 1258-1300 on our wild DXing session
from the cliff. Location "Alexandra" mentioned at end of Curtain store
commercial, and then "More FM" by announcer.
https://app.box.com/s/5enl8w5c6rn4ztbodqbqnjzhy5uonvly

As for the ABC affiliate 6DL on the same frequency, I was unable to get a match
with 6WA as Fiji 1 was trashing it to the point of not being able to decipher
but a few words and then 531 had faded down. However, on 531 they were
discussing "racing" and the announcer says."..and ABC will go there". Has to be
6DL https://app.box.com/s/bo7ejkop0eklkt5pa931ea24wkjuvel2

A good and satisfying session was had today, Aug 5 although it could not match
yesterday's dazzling session, it was better than any of the 3 we attended last
year with our Japanese DXer guests. 6WA was in strongly at 1315.

Subject: [IRCA] Oregon Cliff (Rockwork 4) Ultralight DU's for 8-4

As reported earlier it was a pretty wild ocean cliff session, with both Tom and
I judging it to have been the most thrilling ever at Rockwork 4. There was
enhanced propagation to both Australia and New Zealand, with Fiji joining in
the bonanza as well. Some highlights were the best-ever signals from both
558-Fiji and 558-6WA (in a snarl much of the time), the best-ever signal from
the 2.5 kW Radio Kahungunu, unusual Kiwi-Oz mixes across the band, and 558-Fiji
sticking around at an S5 level until 1350, 15 minutes after Oz and NZ had
bailed. The underperforming Fiji of the past 2 years has suddenly become a
DU-DX powerhouse.

There is no way to make a detailed report of such a wild session without
extensive file review (which I assume that Tom will be doing for weeks), but
some of the highlight signals are linked below. While still in total darkness
Tom and I both noticed that Kiwi propagation was unusually good around 1200,
and we thought it would turn out to be a great Kiwi morning. It was, but in the
increasing daylight the Australian signals also got a major boost, along with
558-Fiji. Snarling frequency fights broke out across the band as enhanced DU
propagation kicked in throughout the entire South Pacific. Neither Tom or I had
ever heard anything like it., but it certainly more than made up for Tom's
dicey luck the past two days. His Perseus recordings from today may become real
classics.

531 More FM? Sounds like another Kiwi ad string (minus the "Sheila") at 1258,
but I'm certainly no expert on Kiwi English. In a mix with PI and an Oz talk
station throughout the session
https://app.box.com/s/jtq9cyi0te4bbri3tv7puzvt289fpsmx

531 UnID-Oz ABC-sounding talk hanging around at 1253 over and under PI and the
rest. 558-6WA was in at the time but I didn't think to check for a parallel.
Maybe 6DL? https://app.box.com/s/688ujh8qu23t7jl5dfuvwzsc6iudsw0e

558 Radio Fiji One Suva, Fiji, 10 kW The real star of the session, pounding in
with serious strength after its recent rejuvenation. Was still easily audible
at 1350 during final antenna dismantling. These two MP3's (at 1307 and 1323)
were the strongest recordings ever made of the station at the ocean cliff
https://app.box.com/s/13ra6q2edyniegz3jnwii1nlu6dcoz05
https://app.box.com/s/ykjkqqfa59l7h2rfcedhudikwn8ayfye

558 6WA Wagin, Australia, 50 kW In a snarl with Fiji for much of sunrise
enhancement, the Western Australian station (with programming matching the
"Overnights" podcast on the ABC website) made a return appearance at 1319 to
repeat the North American Ultralight DXing distance record of 9,138 miles /
14,705 km. First heard at this cliff in August of 2015
https://app.box.com/s/cze5omzc1x01p28gpdo44wylhdl61l6y

603 Oz-Radio Waatea Mix For the first time ever, at 1254 an Oz station
dominates the NZ Maori powerhouse Radio Waatea at the "Kiwi Cliff." Prior to
this I had never even heard any competition for Radio Waatea on the frequency
(during 12 ocean cliff DXpeditions here)
https://app.box.com/s/i3mgrjxw0dwadrtc2c69x7f2f7h6qzua

765 Radio Kahungunu Napier-Hastings, NZ, 2.5 kW Yikes! The Kiwi Maori station
melting down my CC Skywave's front end is running only 2.5 kW of power! Even
with its reputation as an overachiever, this signal is straight out of science
fiction. There is apparently a new Maori net ID at 1:30 into the recording at
the 1300 TOH, but no Maori translator is currently available at the cliff

All;
The driver was the problem. I have just solved the problem by deleting the
device from device manager and reinstalling with a different driver that it
likes with a little trickery (it's unsigned). Ready for Cliffside action in the
AM.

Today's conditions were underwhelming with the often heard big stations only
and low band only. With the two Japanese DXers Satoshi and Hiroo here we can
hope for improvement with at least 5 DXers at the cliffs tomorrow.

A Win 10 update caused the Perseus to mute? OK, unmute it But I get the
feeling that you don't mean mute in the normal sense where audio was stopped by
a button push. What did happen, so we can be forewarned?

I'll take a wild guess... It wouldn't talk to the PC? If so, maybe it tossed
out old unsigned drivers as they are not considered registered? If so, Nico had
uploaded signed drivers and you can always use the Zadig approach. Delete above
if not the problem.

Disasters? Tom seemed to have been fed a Windows 10 update that made his
Perseus mute; fortunately, there was a netbook available that had Perseus
software on it and was still functional. Thank you Windows 8. So we have
Perseus recordings through the peak of the opening.

You got it Chuck, Laptop will not recognize the Perseus hardware. Been trying
drivers all day to no avail. Zadig installer included. The signed drivers by
Nico are a dead link. Huge Win 10 update installed uncommanded on July 4 while
visiting Denver with the laptop. No restore point created. I do have backup in
the form of the MSI Wind U100 that never failed to capture DX. It's 4 hours
away in Seattle. My bad.

Very poor conditions prevailed this morning, such a disappointment after
yesterday's very good results here.  Used the same unattended recording times
and durations as yesterday, 1 or 2 minute Perseus recordings at 1159, 1259,

Hi Nick;

It really was the 26th!  I listened to the later 1341 utc recording first and
could hardly believe it was that decent considering the other reports.
Earlier times were considerably less good but still OK. Just a brief bit of
dawn enhancement I guess, but I'll take it.  One of the few times this QTH can
be mentioned in the same sentence as Haida Gwaii!!

Best Wishes--

Tom, I just realized that my own TP report to the
list for 25 Sept was labelled 26 Sept (never do
anything important late in the evening).did you do the same?

Bruce's report for the 26th was fairly dismal,
and I didn't report (for real) the 26th due to
poor results.  On the contrary, conditions were
pretty good on Haida Gwaii according to Walt
Salmaniw, so maybe your conditions are closer to Haida Gwaii's, hi.

Coincidentally I was checking for the Seattle Russian station most days and

Is anyone else closer to the transmitter north of Seattle hearing them?

Poor conditions prevailed once again with the exception of 819 N. Korea just
after 1400Z. Nice signal, but not a new one for the log. As Bruce noted, KGNW
was off the air probably due to the snow. On 820 itself, I had WBAP there at
1300Z, XEABCA Mexicali at 1400Z and KUTR from Utah at 1500Z, solid ID's from
all three. No sign of KCBF Fairbanks or any other Alaskan for that matter.

Not a great morning and down from yesterday. Alaska, however was back nicely
with at least 4 in with ID's. KTKN Ketchikan totally dominating 930 Khz at
1400Z and 1500Z, and KGTL 620 Homer over KPOJ at 1500Z. Asian signals were
almost all big guns and were down in strength from yesterday. Koreans were
paticularly poor this morning and the few China stations were weak. LWBC was
rather mediocre as well. Little dawn enhancement this morning, but just enough
to bring a few Chinese into audio at 1500Z.

A different and somewhat better morning than yesterday, except the Alaskans
were totally missing today. More China in however and the CRI on 603 was a new
one for the log. As others have mentioned, no dawn enhancement at all, and dawn

A better morning than yesterday here. Japan really strong today with some 2nd

well with 576 Mayak back in. Overall a pretty satisfactory late-season morning
but nothing new in the log. LWBC was both louder and more plentiful than 24
hours ago with 234 Khz in today. At least 3 Alaskans with KTKN 930 pounding in,

2010-11-07 Thread k7wv

A pretty good morning here. TOH recorder made the switchover to Pacific
Standard Time by making all the recordings 1 hour later than desired so only
the first three were useful. Lots of hets just below audio threshold noted,
many on unusual freq's. Report is only for those stn's heard in audio. Korea
was unusually loud with some 2nd tier JA's and plenty of Chinese stations.
Several frequencies UNID (792, 819, 864, 1476) as it could have been CC or KK.
Hopefuly more careful listening will provide clues. I won't be able to compare
this morning's results to yesterday until late tonight as I am attending an
event all day and haven't listened to those samples yet.

The following times sampled this morning: 1359Z, 1445Z, 1459Z, 1535Z, 1559Z for
1-2
minutes each using Perseus (Change to standard time delayed the preset times
one hour).

Regarding 1476 KHz at 1500Z;

Nick,
I just listened again and it seems to be just four pips of equal tone. There
was a man just prior to the pips and a YL after and it sounded Chinese (not the
standard guangbo dientai phrase though.)

Thanks--Tom R

1476 I think is what I was hearing also Tom. Do you just hear the 4
ips (odd for China, but that's what it seems to be), or do you hear
nother set of pips offset by a fraction of a second?
Thanks.
Nick

2010-11-06 Thread k7wv

I am a day late with these loggings like Nick, but wanted to get this reported
as the conditions weren't bad. I added 1500Z to the times sampled but 1435Z was
still by far the best. Not quite as lively as yesterday (the 4th) but China in
again and different stations rising to the top this time like 945 and 963. LWBC
was a little better than the 4th with 6 stations in and all a little louder. No
Alaska noted.

The following times sampled this morning: 1259Z, 1335Z, 1359Z, 1435Z, 1459Z for
1-2
minutes each using Perseus.

The following were heard in audio:

153 R. Rossii Komsomolsk (Russia) Good at 1435Z

2010-11-05 Thread k7wv

Mediocre morning until I checked the 1435Z recording. Wow, now that's dawn
enhancement! China all over the place and Russia too. JA's were mostly big guns
only. Mayak on 666 and CNR-1 on 1593 new ones for the log. I may be able to
pull more out after further listening to the 1-minute sample. Most of these
were totally absent or hets at 1400Z.
No Alaska noted however, and the LWBC Russians were well down from the past 4
or 5 mornings with 189 being best again this morning and 234 absent.

The following times sampled this morning: 1259Z, 1335Z, 1359Z, 1435Z for 1-3
minutes each using Perseus.

The following were heard in audio:

153 R. Rossii Komsomolsk (Russia) Poor 1435Z

Another improvement here this morning, with several Chinese and good signals
from Russia on LW and MW. Alaska coming back with KTKN in. 171 returns on LWBC,
but just above threshold audio and the other R. Rossii were somewhat weaker
than the last two mornings. Lots of hets noted just below audio threshold.
Prior to the 1435Z sample conditions were generally poor, indicating decent
dawn enhancement today.

The following times sampled this morning: 1259Z, 1335Z, 1359Z, 1435Z for 1-3

The following were heard in audio:

A better showing from yesterday but not by much. A couple Chinese in this
morning with 1206 especially good. Best sampling by far was at 1435Z, getting
some boost from dawn enhancement. LW band had only five 'R. Rossii' in this
morning with no sign of 171 today. But the loudest signals heard all season
from 153 and 234. Also, no Alaskans to be heard for yet another morning.

The following times sampled this morning: 1259Z, 1335Z, 1359Z, 1435Z for 1-3
minutes each using Perseus.

The following were heard in audio:

153 R. Rossii Komsomolsk (Russia) Very good, huge local-like signal at 1435Z
180 R. Rossii Yelizovo (Russia) Poor at 1358Z
189 R. Rossii Belogorsk (Russia) Good at 1358Z, poor at 1435Z
234 R. Rossii Arman (Russia) Good at 1358Z. Best heard this season.
279 R. Rossii Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Russia) Good to very good at 1400Z

Down a little from yesterday especially on MW. Longwave broadcast continues to
be quite good however. Six R. Rossii stations in this morning. Strong carrier

A mediocre morning at best. Asiatic TP's practically died out at 1400Z, only to
stage a modest comeback with dawn enhancement on the 1425Z sampling. LWBC
Russians were best at 1259Z and went downhill from there. No Alaskans noted

2010-10-26 Thread k7wv

Back at the home QTH after a weekend at Grayland in which I brought the
ALA-100M along to test performance at the beach (it did great).
A little below average here this morning with only 3 times sampled. Best
performance came late, during the 1422Z sampling. A surprise that the R. Rossii
LWBC stations were still good at this late hour. The Japanese and Korean big
guns came to life and a couple China stns in decent audio as well. No Alaskans
noted.

Times sampled: 1335Z, 1358Z, 1422Z for 1 to 3 minutes each using Perseus.

The following heard in audio:

153 R. Rossii Komsomolsk (Russia) Good at 1422Z
189 R. Rossii Belogorsk (Russia) Good at 1422zZ
279 R. Rossii Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Russia) Good at 1422Z
558 HLQH Daegu (S Korea) Poor at 1400, 1422Z

594 JOAK Tokyo (Japan) Fair at 1422Z, poor at 1400Z
603 HLSA Namyang (S Korea) Fair with song by YL at 1422Z,,not in audio earlier
693 JOAB NHK2 Tokyo (Japan) Fair at 1422Z, not in audio earlier

Conditions took a turn for the worse today, well down from yesterday. Most of
the audio broke late, during the 1415Z capture and not before. Even the

were the R. Rossii LWBC stations, 4 of which were in at 1300Z, much improved
from yesterday.

Back monitoring after a computer glitch kept Perseus from recording for 10/14.
Back on the NW loop (after that DU fun several days ago on the SW element).
Very poor conditions. Only JOAK Japan 594 (1400Z) and VOA Thailand 1575

Yesterday's turbo-charged Hawaii signals on the NW loop convinced me to switch
to the SW loop for this morning's Perseus captures. Although it wasn't as
pronounced as yesterday (no reprise of KMVI 550), the other HI stations from
yesterday were in pretty well and a very nice slate of DU's.
Only one JA heard, 594, and at 1414Z it was totally buried by a huge 3WV. I'll
leave the SW loop connected for another night!
Following times sampled this morning: 1300Z, 1345Z, 1400Z, 1414Z using Perseus.
The following heard in audio:

576 2RN presumed (Australia), man reading news at 1400Z, overcoming KVI

Poor showing from Asia, worst of the season. But stunning, loud Hawaii where
there were Alaskans only yesterday. I've never heard KRTR this good here. All
on the NW loop! Wish I was able to be at the dials this morning, would have
switched over to the SW loop for some fun. Currently I have to go outside and
physically move the Wellbrook module to switch loop elements, so there's no
doubt this was the NW loop.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-2

2010-10-03 Thread k7wv

Hi Gary;

I had JOIP Oita in here nicely on 639 at 1400Z Sep 30 2010. A clear NHK1 //594.
Also had Koriyama on 846 the same morning, along with the 675 NHK1 synchros,
all 5 KW. I'd say JOIP is an excellent candidate for your 639 station. Even
though the big JA guns were down somewhat on Oct 1 the band does strange
things. The 1 KW 1602 synchros were audible here, for instance.

73 and have fun with the TP's

Hello All,

The Chinese TP's were really strong here this morning, and several
ainland stations had their strongest audio ever. 981-CNR1 was really booming
n on a very noisy frequency (980-CKNW is a daytimer here, and Seattle
oise from 950 and 1000 doesn't help) for a first-ever Puyallup logging (the
tation is a regular at Grayland). 621-China (presumed Heilongjiang) had its
est audio of the season, and many other second-tier Chinese stations had
ecent strength. Like Bruce and Tim have already observed, though, this
orning's TP propagation was pretty selective, and the Japanese stations
enerally didn't share in the increased-strength bonanza.

The most interesting signal of the morning, though, was a persistent
siatic TP co-channel mixing with 639-CNR1 around 1406-- the first time any
sian co-channel had been heard here on 639. The station certainly wasn't
iji (which was looped out, in this DU-dead zone), and had strength which
pproached that of CNR1 at times. I made a couple of headphone recommended
P3's, but since the Grayland and Masset archives don't show too much here
xcept CNR1, it's a real mystery. Congratulations to Bruce and Tim for
heir loggings of 1170-VOA in the Philippines-- one that I certainly would
ave checked, if alerted. It should receive due attention tomorrow :-)

The following were received on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5
oopstick) inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the
ack
ard):

58 JOCR Kobe, Japan Weak Japanese speech around 1328
85 JOPG Kushiro, Japan Poor-fair Japanese talk in and out, 1330
94 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Good interview program at 1329, w/ fades

39 CNR1 China Synchros Good Chinese speech w/ fades, 1343
39 UnID-TP Mixing with CNR1 at a fair level from 1406-1410, this
mystery station was heard for the first time ever here. At 1408

I heard Russian on 1010 with no TOH ID (other than in Russian) on yesterday

KOOR 1010 kHz is now carrying Russian programming. Portland PDX
orum has a posting on August 24, 2010 mentioning hearing
ussian on KOOR 1010. I'm listening to the Russian program now at
:43 AM PST. A fellow on the list suggested that with Bustos Media
inancial situation the Russian group was probably able to get a good
eal on airtime. Wonder if they still have Little Saigon Radio on
eekends?

Re: [IRCA] Question for Perseus users

2009-11-24 Thread k7wv

Hi Mike;

I had a computer failure in mid-late October so after doing a factory reset
of the drive I had to go through the steps to reinstall and configure Perseus.
I did indeed have to download and install Net Framework 3.5 and Com0com as well
to support the timer software. No issues to report and my Perseus is working
fine. I am using the TOTH-Recorder utility as it's the only one of several
available Perseus timers I have gotten to work perfectly on this machine
running Vista Home Premium. It has been a joy listening to and analyzing the
morning TP's with 1600 Khz recorded bandwidth without having to get up at
insane hours. You set the bandwidth, center frequency, start, stop times and
duration right from the timer screen, and you can have as many sessions during
the night as you want. I only use local time with the timer as it can be off an
hour with UTC. As for Perseus itself, only UTC. I have not found a way to
change it except by altering the computer's clock.

Subject: [IRCA] Question for Perseus users

Hi Everyone:
I've had my Perseus a few weeks now and after a few minor hiccups early on,
verything is now working as it should, though I wish there was a way to change
he time on it's display to show local time instead of being permanently set to
TC, which I so rarely use. In order to realize more of it's incredible
otential I would like to install the Perseus Record Scheduler (
ttp://prs.redirectme.net/ ) so I can record at all those unearthly TOH periods
efore local sunrise, and, more importantly, long before I get up. However, in
rder do that the instructions tell me that I need to download and instal
icrosoft's .Net Framework 3.5. And the Microsoft download website tells me I
eed to download and install Windows Installer 3.1. Before I attempt this I
ould like to ask other Perseus users in the group about any potential pitfalls,
roblems, dangers I might encounter doing so. Up until last night I had never
ven heard of these programs, so I'm flying blind here and I am not i!
nstrument rated. Any warnings, suggestions would be appreciated.

I drove up to the area of the 1710 Russian language station in the southern
part of Everett today and taped what appeared to be an ID in the form of Radio
MV. I was all ready to send copies to Walter Salmaniw, Dennis Vroomski and
Mauno Ritola when I thought I had better test my hearing by Googling Radio
MV. It was there.?
?
This is Russian Christian Radio, Box 523, Mount Vernon, WA 98273, (425)
296-7829. The web site is in Cyrillic so I clicked a word which looked like
Kontact and voila, the location in English appeared. The audio is available
on line. I didn't see 1710 mentioned anywhere. As for the significance of Radio
MV, perhaps it simply stands for Mount Vernon...?
?
While driving up I-5, it started appearing at Exit 175; I could identify it as
Russian by Exit 178. Its coverage does not seem remarkable for a Part 15
station, at least from my car.?
?
If anyone would like a copy of the audio, let me know and I will send it off
list. It is 2MB mp3 and is 2:08 in length.?

Yesterday I talked with the CE of KCIS-630 who was intrigued enough
to ask a friend (a contract engineer) to check it out. The results:

Chris actually found the transmitter up here in Lynnwood. Near the
Home Depot between Highway 99 and Boeing field. They aren't putting
out very much signal. 100 mv from across the street. Chris says
they are using something like a citizen's band antenna on a two
story building. Perhaps there are other 'pirates' out there doing
 the same thing.

Mill Creek and Lynnwood are about five air miles apart but based on
the mv reading from across the street, it seems unlikely that a
single station at either location would be loud at the other. At
the same time, unless they were synced (unlikely), they would clash
significantly between both locations.

Anyone want to hit both locations on the same day?

That satellite dish on the same roof is probably picking up the programming
stream. That's not a typical 18 DISH/DirecTV setup.

The house next to it was 2324 119th St SW unit 2 so it stands to reason that
the house with the xmtr is unit 1. Couldn't see their house number but there
were several cars parked there and the garage door was open. Looks like they
were home.
