Re: [IRCA] 30 years of skywave DXing
Got the radio bug from a cousin of mine who was into shortwave. Our grandparents lived out in the country and he would put up a wire and we would listen to the propaganda broadcasts (this was the mid-60s). Started in 1968 with a small Panasonic portable radio (transistor) which my family got from the local Triple-S stamp redemption center in nearby Fair Lawn. Picked up a couple hundred stations that summer and got a Hallicrafters S-120 for Christmas. Never knew about radio clubs, but it was a lot of fun just doing it myself. I knew shortwave stations QSL'd, but never realized AM stations did too! To this day, I have just one BCB QSL: KOA in Denver on that same Panasonic portable (which no longer works) from 1977. Three years later I got into amateur radio as WN2BSU and am now celebrating 40 years in the hobby. Started in broadcasting in 1980 at WRKL in New City NY, worked full-time in radio in the mid-80s in WV, VA and IN before returning to NJ in 1986. Have been doing sports reporting at WGHT since 1999 on a part-time basis, in addition to working a day job. Found out about NRC from my friend Dave Marthouse and joined in 2001. Also joined IRCA. It's still fun to just listen and I do it once in a while. Guess it's a return to my roots as a radio hobbyist. In Spain, the origin of the Basques was a subject of occasional discussion. The most accepted theories (at least amongst my acquaintances in Madrid and Wikipedia) is that Basque has some linguistic roots in common with languages of the Caucasus and possibly with early European languas that pre-date the Indo-European languages now spoken. Central NJ got over 5 inches of rain, Rutgers classes are canceled today and tomorrow, the Raritan has overflowed its banks and closed most of the bridges, etc. This might be a good opportunity for DXers outside of the affected area to log some new ones. Third time they've been flooded out since I've been working there (part-time). Their antennas and studios are right on the Pompton River so it's no surprise. Wonder when they'll get back on. My area has thousands of Polish immigrants and coverage is not the best, but RKL is still audible here. They have been Polish-formatted since 1999. It's a simulcast with the Polnet station in Chicago. If you're a soccer junkie, they do all the Chicago Fire games. Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] All Christmas music formats
-Original Message- From: Patrick Griffith, There was an interesting story in the Business Review (Albany NY) on 12/8 about radio stations that switch to All Christmas / All The Time formats around Thanksgiving. The article says that about 370 stations nationwide make the switch each year. It quoted a media research firm who reviewed 119 FM stations that adopted this format in 2005. They found an average market share increase of 10% in both the adult age 25-to-54 and all listener over age 12 sections. Two Albany area stations mentioned in the article had adult 25-to-54 market share increases of 50% (WKLI) and 37.5% (WTRY) last year! Personally I can't stand this format. Bottom line, it sells! I'm sure most of us on these lists can't stand it either, since many of us are broadcasters and have had to sit through six hours of this stuff at a time. People are amazed when I tell them I hate Christmas music. I'd love to see a station declare itself a Christmas-free zone as a sanctuary for those of us who can't stand it. Re: [IRCA] Where were you on 22 November 1963?
Kindergarten, Clifton NJ. Don't remember a thing. And to think the Phil Spector Christmas Album would come out about a week later. Talk about bad timing.
