[IRCA] Overnight conditions

2018-11-21 Thread Paul Crankshaw

Hi

This is an observation on overnight TA conditions from across the pond.

There appeared to be a wipe out of TA signals around 0500 utc. I do a
plot of carriers on each frequency and nearly every frequency shows
audio disappearing at around that time ... almost as if a plug has been
pulled.

It would be interesting to learn if anyone 'on the other side' noticed this.

I'm attaching a plot of 1430 kHz, which is typical of just about every
frequency The white/blue fuzz around a carrier represents audio present
and you can see what happens at 0500.

Conditions much improved here overnight though no WCNA. Strong sigs
from MI and IL as well as Mex, AL, TX. However, I'm told John Faulkner

maybe the good conditions will drift another 125 miles further south.

Subject: unattended Perseus recording scheduler (HDSDR)

After considering add-on programs such as Mestor to work with the

"native"

Perseus software to enable scheduled unattended recordings, I decided to
give HDSDR a try instead since it embodies receiver control and

scheduling

inside the same program. (This stuff is "old hat" to some of you I
suppose.)

Last night I did three successful unattended captures at 8 p.m., 1 a.m,
and 5 a.m. EDT (, 0500, 0900 UTC). These were on the south antenna
since the east one is presently out of service. Cursory playbacks don't
show anything particularly rare. As usual, there were many massive

Cubans

but conditions weren't auroral enough for total suppression of Lakes area
domestic pests (ON, OH, MI, IL) off the side of the antenna. But at

least

I have a new useful tool when we do get a killer aurora sometime.

The set-up is fairly simple.

Go to the HDSDR website ' http://www.hdsdr.de/ '.

At the bottom of the screen there is a blue "Download" button. When you
click on that you get a pop up to save the self-extracting executable
"HDSDR_install.exe" to your hard drive (typically to the Downloads

folder).

Navigate to your downloads folder and run "HDSDR_install.exe".

Follow the prompts in the set-up wizard and allow the program to install
files to "C:\Program Files\HDSDR".

You can open the program but there is one more necessary step, so exit it
for the time being.

Go to the Perseus website ' http://microtelecom.it/perseus/software.html
'.

On the right side of the page, near the bottom, is a highlighted link
"ExtIO DLL for Studio1 - Winrad". Click that. You will be downloading
"ExtIO_perseus2v3b.zip".

Open that zip and copy the files in it to the "C:\Program Files\HDSDR"
folder.

Go back to your desktop and click the HDSDR icon to start the program.

The scheduler, accessible by the "Options [F7]" button, is fairly
straightforward to set up.

There is no formal HDSDR manual but the ' http://www.hdsdr.de/ ' website
does have links to various user-written guides which may or may not

address

your specific questions. The Perseus YahooGroup may also be useful if

you

get stuck on something.

It should be noted that the software will operate other SDR receivers.
Those will have their own set-up idiosyncracies including different ExtIO
DLL drivers to get.

I'm now using Colin's Vactrol with a EWE and it works fine. Just

Hi James,

Haven't seen a reply on this, so don't know if you had already planned

recover from the 5k pot purchase, and have some fixed resistors in the
1.2 - 1.8 kilohm around, I can send you a diagram that should fill the
bill.

As far as the Vactrol and the EWE, I've seen a couple of references
saying that won't work, but am not sure I understand why not. It
won't work with Mark Connelly's clever arrangement with Flag antennas
where the control voltage is fed via the receiver feedline, and then
through the Flag itself, but many people (including Colin Newell) are
now using a separate control line (such as lamp cord). In that case,
I would think there should be no problem using a Vactrol with a EWE
antenna, as the "resistor" in the Vactrol is completely isolated from
the control line.

feel strongly that this is the way to go for remote control of Rt. My
fixed
resistor Rt was set to be very good via much trial and error.
However, the
Vactrol is every bit as good as the fixed Rt on all freqs and I can
usually
tweak in a few more dB of null on a station and not hurt the null of
other
stations. It is also useful to adjust Rt in some cases for improving
nulls
of stuff at large angles to the exact back end or to improve nulls
high end

or low end.

You won't be able to use this type of setup with a EWE since it is
connected to ground, but there are ways around that. However, I am not a
circuits guy so I am unsure how to do that.

I'd use a Vactrol if you want to remotely vary Rt. 73 KAZ out to test
this setup at night.

[IRCA] 1490 kHz unID

Hi

I've run out of ideas for identifying this station, heard on 1490 kHz at
0100 on 15 February. The call/location don't seem to match anything on
the frequency.

I wonder if it might be local to anyone.

It was preceeded by "ESPN Deportes" which I suspect was WCEC Haverhill
MA but I think these are two distinct stations.

[IRCA] Overnight conditions

Conditions were very disturbed overnight with NA being wiped out and
replaced by LA.

I leave my Perseus receiver on 1050 kHz overnight and the usual plot
of carriers from approx utc (at the top) to 0630 utc looks like this

http://share.cx.com/DmLX7y

Last night this was the plot
http://share.cx.com/bsrGz2

There are a lot of discontinuities as small changes in received carrier
frequency occur. Of the two strong (white) carriers, the left hand one,
which I think is WEPN, gets wiped out at around 0445 utc.

I wonder if anyone can help identify this station, recorded at 0600 utc
today on 1460 kHz. Conditions were very good to the midwest and at 0700
I heard KXNO Des Moines IA.

I definately hear a an R as the last
letter in the second set of call
letters at the end of the clip.. but after listening to it 5
times , that
doens't sound quite like an E right before the R.

Also, it almost sounds like he's saying "1300 W**R"
and not 1390.

That being said, the 3rd letter, almost sounds like a P...
but I can't find
anything but WMER on 1390 that even remotely fits.. and I
can't find
anything on 1300 at all that fits.

My Perseus occasionally starts to hiccup and choke at times, typically

scan when I am working with the Perseus, or to run the scan before I
begin to review files.

Several times now, once in Newfoundland, and now at home, the
hiccuping and choking has happened during recording, Case in point,
my MAR 10 2157-2202 EST recording. Starts out fine, but two minutes
in it begins to go bad. In the latter case, I think this may have
happened because I was nearing capacity on my hard drive. I still had
several GBs space available, so maybe it becomes harder for it to find
actual physical space on the drive at that point. Just my best guess.

One technique that helps me recover useful audio from this section is
to choose short 10-15 second segments and then loop it. It continues
to choke, but on the second or third try it begins to even out and I
can understand it. Still a hiccup or two (usually in the middle of
the ID!) but it seems to work. However, it slows down an already slow
process.

Hello To All,

Heard the KRPI Test this morning with two different morse code segments
later on in the test. There was a slight hint of music peaking a bit at
times as well parallel to what was on their web feed.

At the time another Spanish speaking station with light music was also
weakly heard on the frequency.

Two ultralights were used, first the SRF-M37W with no success, then the
SRF-39FP which did manage to capture the code and music very weakly
coming

through.

Receiver : SRF-39FP barefoot

[IRCA] Help please with 1230 AM UNID

2011-11-26 Thread paul crankshaw

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help with this id

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mwdx/files/1230unid.mp3
The recording is in USB, followed by AM

It's a US station recorded on 1230 kHz at 2200 UTC on Saturday here in
Scotland

There is a "Fox AM 12-30" followed by a sung id. And of course "powered
by a million watts of memories" is clear

There also seems to be an id at the start of the clip which doesn't
correspond to the one at the end.

I also hear what sounds like "now serving Green Bay county" although WI
is unlikely here at 2200 UTC.

I believe it's going ahead on schedule, so I'll be listening on 1550 tonight.
I checked the CBC Windsor web pages, and they make no mention of special
programming, but they do remind listeners that the changeover is effective
October 1. I expect that CBE will disappear with little or no fanfare.

I noticed WZRK "The Avenue" under CBE last night around 2300 EDT, obviously
still on day power, so it looks like they're destined to become a new pest

Now, if only WQEW-1560 would stop spewing crud all over 1550...

thein carriers:

The carrier on 1400.009 is CBG St John's Newfoundland and is the most
common station received here. Whereas I normally get a thin straight
line there was all sorts of distortion on it and on many other carriers
too. It all seemed to switch off as if by magic at local sunrise here -

They may have had a technical problem that either caused the
station to
sign on too early today or perhaps a problem that caused them to never
sign off yesterday. NIce catch!

[IRCA] 930 Arabic and warble

2009-09-17 Thread Paul Crankshaw
Does anyone have any ideas about the source of the Arabic chanting and
warble (not necessarily the same source but possibly related) heard here
this morning. The warble has been heard for some time but I'm not aware
of the Arabic being reported on

I did find a message on HCDX (7 Dec 08) from Albert Muick in Kabul
noting what seemed to be the Koran being chanted on 930. But it seemed
to be a one-off.

Ken Baird 20 miles SE of me has posted some observations along with the
text of Albert's message at
http://www.ayrshirehistory.eu/tadx/transatlantic_logs_september_2009.html

and this is my recording from 0528 UTC today. At this time the greyline
passes through France, Spain, Morocco and Nigeria, so is well to the
west of Saudi Arabia.

Re: [IRCA] How much ground for a EWE?

2009-03-10 Thread Paul Crankshaw
Yes it is adjusted in exactly the same way as the ewe - if anything I
find the null more consistent than when using earth rods and
consequently there is less need to adjust it.

One my set up the resistor goes between the the bottom of the down leg
and the start of the bottom wire - ideally it should be inserted midway
down the downleg and so should be the balun on the other downleg.

It all depends on your ground conditions I suppose but gentle hammering of 4 ft
copper pipe works here.

Although the ewe reduces signals from the rear well, I would suggest you
consider a flag.

I'm only able to run the flag with the bottom wire lying on the ground, and
fed at the bottom rather than midway down the downward legs - otherwise it would
be an obstruction. It should be raised up clear of the ground - but I still get
a far better null with this compromise than with the ewe.

Of course the more copper you put in the ground the better the null on the ewe
should become.
