Re: [IRCA] Non-TPs from Orcas Island
Hey John: As one of the guys who got to see you this past season, and in fact finally meet you in person, it was indeed a pleasure to DX with you and get to know you! Hopefully we will meet again next season at Salt Creek for a little pseudo-motel DXing. Have a fun and safe trip back to Oklahoma, and let me know when the gear you kindly borrowed to me should be entrusted to the post office. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA I had my worst TP morning of this trip mainly because I packed my radios yesterday. Today is final packing and then tomorrow we head down I-5 to Bakersfield/Barstow and hang a left. We are going to try to break the trip up some this year, with a day here and half a day there, so it will likely be about a week before we make it to the South Prairie in Oklahoma. Thanks very much from all of the help from the other members of the NW Gang. One of the real pleasures of DXing out here is having such close friends to enjoy this insanity along side. My only regret is that I got to see so few of you in person. I totally missed the Victoria guys this year and saw far less than half of the Seatac crowd. Still, we've been doing this together long enough that is a good visit, if only by e-mail. It was exactly twenty years ago this February that Guy and I made that fabled first tip to the Grayland motel. We heard almost every Pacific Island nation, including Tuvalu and were hooked on TPs on MW. In March of 1990, there was a massive DXpedition at the Grayland Beach State Park with Dave Clark from Toronto and more than half of the NW group that is still making trips down there. I got a real laugh a couple of months ago when several of us were discussing a lovely campground west of Port Angeles on the Washington side of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It looks like a perfect place for fall DXpeditions for Asia. Nick Hall-Patch pointed out that the worst thing about this place was that one had to CAMP OUT. He allowed as maybe the soft beds, flush toilets and complete kitchens in the Grayland Motel units had spoiled him for the vagaries of CAMPING OUT. Why I remember full well the DXpeditions in the 80s and first half of the 90s when Nick drove his little pickup truck to various DX sites and DXed mosta the night from the cab and then slept half the day in the seated position all in the cab of that little truck. I also remember going potty in the deep brush while keeping watch (both ways) for the local mama bear and her cub. Time marches on, eh It's been a fabulous Fall Season... I hope that each of my co-conspirators enjoyed it at least half as much as I did! John B. [IRCA] NW WA TPs for 23 Nov - The Dog Ate My Antenna
Hi all: This tried and true excuse for not bringing in one's homework seemed applicable to my inability to bring in much of any TP DX this morning. From 1315-1415 UTC, the reception of both domestic and TP signals was so poor I checked my antenna connection a couple times. After hearing snippets of JJ on 747, 774 and 828 and a few other strangled strains of sinewy signals, work beckoned and I called it a day. Re: [IRCA] tonight's TAs
Hey Nick: I had audio on 1269 from Germany for a bit, plus the usuals on 1134 and 1215, etc. 1062 and 1179 are interesting hets that haven't been around lately, plus there are several others potential hets that are threatening to become something serious. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Yes, there are a few at 0415UT, but rather predictable. Best has been 1134 with audio that threatens to be readable from time to time. The others, 1215, 1377 and 1422 so far, have been just burbles in the murk. Re: [IRCA] 747-Ta or TP?
Hi Bill: I had near-audio on 747 last night as well but couldn't pull out any words - too much slop from 750. 747 on the TA side is likely either the Netherlands or Bulgaria, with Iran or Syria also in the mix - how sure are you that it was Spanish? Radio Nacional in Spain on 747 is only 5 kw, which would be g reat catch but pretty tough. I like to use http://www.hermanboel.eu/emwg/online-mw1.htm for TA info (which is where I got the above info). TPs start coming in around that time this time of year, but there aren't any Spanish TPs that I know of. [IRCA] NW Washington TPs - Count Dracula Strikes Again!
Hi all: Similar to the reports of others, conditions were not that great, and at sunrise, the TPs scurried away like Count Dracula avoiding the sun. I was up an hour prior to sunrise, and the conditions at that time were actually much better (again!). Of note was that, throughout the morning, 1134-CNR1-China was actually stronger than its counterpart on 639 which is normally quite strong. 1134 was especially impressive since my Super Loop is pointed straight at 1130-Vancouver. Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-12... Anemic
Hi all: Last night I got a 9x10 foot Slinky Super Loop installed in my shack, and it appears that I am now able to actually hear TPs and contribute here! Not sure what size Super Loop it equates to, but it really pulls it in, is deathly quiet even in the urban RF zoo here, and has nulls off the back (with an adjustable pot) like I have never seen before. I agree with Gary's comments and list. 972-KK was remarkably muted, although 693 was pretty good here. China CR1 on 639, verified with the //5030, was quite good here, with 640-KFI completely nulled out on the Super Loop. I had brief audio on 738, and by the sounds of the music was Taiwan Fisheries. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Hello All, Around 0300 UTC yesterday (during a nice west coast TA opening) it seemed like the band suddenly dived, and the mediocre conditions certainly continued throughout the local sunrise period. The strongest TP's (594, 603, 657, 666, 738, 747, 774, 828 and 972 kHz) had decent audio, but the second-tier Asians were seriously down-- and none of the common co-channel TP's showed up to pester the NHK big guns on 594, 666 and 828. The high band seemed depressed, and the rest of the band was depressing. After last night's great TA opening, however, I guess we shouldn't be too disappointed. It's nice to see John joining in the wild TA fun, and hopefully the band will recover to give us more action tonight. 73, Gary DeBock Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick) Main receiver: Modified C.Crane SWP ultralight (7.5 Slider loopstick + CFJ455K5 filter) 9' PVC tuned passive loop (in the back yard) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Thanks Bruce. At 0420 now, the TA band seems to be played out. I never quite got anyting out of 1215, although I could probably slew the loop over and get a good null on our local on 1210. [IRCA] New article on Moxon indoor FM antenna available
Hi all: Just uploaded to the DXer.ca and Yahoo UltralightDX sites is an article about building a Moxon antenna for indoor use. As someone who can't hoist a good 12-element Yagi up on the roof, I have been pleasantly surprised by the performance of the Moxon design, which gives a lot more gain than a dipole or whip antenna and is also quite directional. It takes three lengths of PVC pipe, some connectors and some wire and rubber bands to have a really good FM antenna. It will hook up to any FM receiver, including portables, that will take an external FM antenna. Re: [IRCA] 1322 kHz Mystery Station - Possible ID?
I wonder if some enterprising person is taking KCIZ's programming and rebroadcasting it using a low power transmitter, perhaps targeted at high school students in your area? While the public stream is apparently not working on the KCIZ web site, maybe someone at Mora High School is sending the feed to a friend here in the Pacific NW on the side? Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Hi Paul, Yes, that is the audio stream I was trying to listen to early this morning and also right now around 9am local. However, there's no audio and the KCIZ home page has a mention of their server being down. From the way it is worded it's hard to tell if they mean the server for their internet stream or the one that automatically generates and displays their playlist. (let's try this again without pushing SEND prematurely...) Hi all: As many of you may know, Taobao is China's equivalent of eBay, from which one can buy all the latest electronic gear that is either not yet available in NA or never was/never will be available. Enter Taobao agents such as Obook, which for a fee will order what you want off of Taobao or other Chinese e-commerce site, receive it, and then ship it to you. Their fee is placed on eBay for you to bid on, giving them a way to solicit and display feedback (which is currently 100%). I just received my first Taobao shipment, a Sony SRF-T615 Ultralight receiver, for a little over half the price that it would cost from the only other known outlet (AudioCubesII in Japan). I placed the order on 9/11 and it arrived yesterday, so 16 days total from order to receipt. It was as advertised on Taobao, new in the box, and appears to work perfectly. The Obook agent provided quick, detailed emails in excellent English, and even refunded about $6 in postage once they figured out what the final costs were. So, based on this initial transaction, and their feedback on eBay, this appears to be an excellent way to order gear that is otherwise not available or much more expensive here. [IRCA] More on buying from Taobao
Hi all: I've already had a couple inquiries as to the nuts and bolts of ordering through an agent off of Taobao, so here's a synopsis of how it works with Obook: 1. Look at Taobao and see what you want - there is a search line towards the top of their home page. The Google translation feature works pretty well. Items are either new or used - I went for an item that showed the new packaging just to make sure. As a rule of thumb, divide the price in Yuan by 5, and that is the approximate amount it will be, with all shipping and fees, delivered to your door by Obook. 2. Send Obook an email, giving them the link to each Taobao item you want. Specify color if necessary. 3. Obook will contact the Chinese seller(s) and verify stock, get ordering information, etc. 4. Obook will send you an email, usually with an Excel spreadsheet form, showing the items and all possible shipping options. It details their fee, and estimated shipping charges, both to them and then to you. 5. If all looks good, pick the shipping scheme and associated total that you want, and send Obook a Paypal payment for that amount. 6. Obook will put up a dummy Ebay item for the amount of their fee. You bid on the Ebay item, but never actually pay for the Ebay item, since Obook will quickly mark it paid. It is simply a way for Obook to receive feedback. 7. Obook orders your stuff, and it is sent to Obook by the Chinese Taobao seller(s). When it arrives at Obook's offices, Obook will send you an email to that effect and let you know that they have in turn shipped it to you. If you order from more than one seller, Obook will collect it all and make one shipment to you, saving shipping fees. 8. Shipping generally takes up to a week for it to get from the seller to Obook, and then another 9-15 days from China to your door. My first transaction took a total of 16 days. [IRCA] TPs from the Oregon Coast for 9/15 Late Rise for DUs
Hi all: I'm in Newport, Oregon for a few days on business I wish all such trips could be near places like this with its great DX potential (oh yeah, I hear it's also got a really nice ocean beach or something to that effect). After determining that my hotel room wasn't going to cut it, I have camped out on a State Park picnic bench the past two mornings. A State trooper flashed a curious floodlight my way this morning about a half hour before sunrise, but apparently a lone DXer isn't considered a threat to the public - at any rate, I would have resisted arrest, since DX opportunities like this come FAR too infrequently for me :-) After a lackluster Monday morning here with only the bigger Japanese and Korean guns being heard, and an eerie deadness early this morning, things really picked up as sunrise neared. Local sunrise was 1356. All heard on a Kchibo D96L with Crate loop active/passive loop (Quantum Loop base), using a barefoot Sony 7600GR as a spotter. I skipped around quite a bit, so the following is chronological rather than by frequency (sorry!): 738 Tahiti at 1256 with good French language banter. Still good when I checked again at 1357. 828 Japan at 1300 with NHK synchros this surfaced with audio before 693, 747 or 774 1575 VOA-Thailand at 1311 with a HUGE signal at this time, discernable on the barefoot D96L 594 Japan at 1315, finally coming in, eventually checked against 567 parallel frequency at 1347 675 at 1317 with unknown mumbling man's voice 891 at 1325 pile-up, one DU and another with a woman's Asian language 936 at 1328 unknown female Asian voice, probably CC 972 at 1331 two, one which sounded like KK, the other an unknown female announcer 1134 at 1334 music at good level, presumed CC 1566 HLAZ at 1339 finally faded up to a decent level, with a slow, monotone male announcer (my third grade teacher???) 1575-VOA at 1340 much weaker than at 1311 but still quite listenable 567 Japan at 1347 paralleled with 594 576 at 1344 Russian male announcer at good level, presumed RV1030 639 at 1346 not //594, so presumed Chinese 693 Japan at 1347 now easily the strongest of the NHK-2 Big 4 891 Australia at 1348 clear male anouncer's voice, nice ID at 1350 819 Unknown at 1352 vocal music of some sort 774 Japan at 1355 finally becoming the strongest NHK-2 station, no hint of DU. Best on 773, away from 780-KKOH 558 Unknown at 1401 woman's Asian voice Being a little after sunrise, things started dissipating away.but wait! 531 great signal from Australia at 1402 mentions of meddling politicians in Canberra, etc. Good steady signal for about five minutes 612 very good level at 1406-1408 discussing Australian cricket, so presumed 4QR 774 3LO decent at 1412 but fading away in the vacuum created by JOUB, with discernable Aussie accented male announcer. 891 was not heard during this last gasp. This was still going on 15 minutes after sunrise here. [IRCA] The Kchibo D92L reviewed
Hi all: Just posted to DXer.ca is a review of the new Kchibo D92L Ultralight receiver, which like the Grundig G8 (Tecsun PL-300WT) incorporates the latest DSP technology from Silicon Labs. In summary, as a barefoot receiver it is not a very good performer because of a poorly-designed and/or faulty LCD screen which emits excessive amounts of hash. However, when mated to a passive loop or external antenna, it really shines, and the multiple bandwidths (1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 khz, per sideband) make it a potent DX receiver. Several DXers have also just received its big brother, the D96L, and are busily evaluating whether or not it is an Ultralight and how its performance stacks up, so stay tuned! [IRCA] The Tecsun PL300/Grundig G8 on SW
Hi all: The past couple nights have been great for SW here in France. Without strong MW stations causing image and mixing problems, reception is good in the hotel room, with the higher meter bands filled with stations at night. The selectivity is great, allowing stations 5 khz apart to be heard without slop. So, if you don't live in a MW swamp like I do, the SW performance should be excellent. It as also nice to have a full SW and to listen to, reminiscent of my yeqrs out East in the 80's. Re: [IRCA] Grundig G8 Continues to Amaze on FM
Hi all: I second Gary's comments, from the perspective of selectivity. I am in Paris at the moment, where flamethrower FM stations are spaced only 0.4 mhZ apart. Between 88 and 108 mhZ there are 48 stations that serve the metro area(!), compared to much less than half that number in Seattle. After turning on the Tecsun PL-300WT and telling it to scan and enter all the stations into memory, it has absolutely no trouble keeping them all separate. Additionally, they all come in perfectly in stereo, so whatever multipath and other problems might be present on many receivers, this little guy brings all stations in with ease. The most impressive thing is that a few semi-locals are also heard, thanks to the excellent sensitivity, and even with the locals blaring away 0.2 mhZ on either side, the semilocals are heard without any interference. MW is also fun here, in that there are only a couple MW stations left in the Paris area, so that at night the band is fairly wide open. The 300 kW local flamethrower on 585 is easily kept in check, allowing DXing on 576 and 594. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA (usually) Using three different FM cubical quad models, I thought my log of regular FM stations was fairly complete, with lots of Oregon and BC stations. But this was before using the Grundig G8 Ultralight, with its simple whip antenna. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

You probably heard the KOMO-1000 and KIRO-710 mixing product, with KOMO on top. It's an easy catch from where I am, unfortunately, being about 11 miles from their 100,000 combined watts. Maybe you could QSL them both, sort of a 2-for-1??? Kevin This morning a bit after dawn, I fired up the big rig hooked to a super loop and I could hear two things on 1710. One, the dominant, was obviously an EE mixing product or image that I was too lazy to ID. The other might have been Russian, though it was too weak to be sure. [IRCA] Kchibo tries again, this time with DSP
Hi all: It looks like Kchibo is using Silicon Labs DSP chips, judging by the translated version of: http://hk.myblog.yahoo.com/luohuang2007/article?mid=1144 For the D96L, it mentions that it has the antenna level and SNR readout, plus the variable fast-slow tuning of the TecsunPL-300WT, so it probably uses the same SILABS chip. It also has variable bandwidth, and looks pretty big, so it may not be an ULR. The D97L looks smaller and more modestly featured, and may be an ULR. At any rate, perhaps Kchibo will finally have a good receiver or two, since they are not actually making the receiver part :-) Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] FM antenna connector for the PL-300WT/G8?
Hi all: Given the incredible FM performance of this new receiver, I am wondering one could: 1. Remove the whip antenna and desolder its connection to the board 2. Install a 1/8 jack on the upper right-hand side of the case, with the inside of the jack taking up the cavity where the whip used to be. 3. Solder a connection from the tip of the jack to the FM antenna connection, and the barrel of the jack to a suitable ground somewhere on the board. This might be a great way to use the receiver as an FM tuner that would accept an external antenna, depending on what impedance the board connection is looking for (anyone have a guess what the whip antenna impedance is?) One could also plug in a length of wire for mobile use to emulate the whip, and a longer length of wire (I think John Cereghin mentioned that clipping extra wire onto the whip worked well) may pay dividends as well. Re: [IRCA] First review of the Grundig G8
Thanks for the heads-up, Paul. It's gotta be the PL-300WT - Grundig just messed up the promotional literature. It's too bad for them, since I wonder how many of us (me included) ordered the Tecsun from China rather than buying from Grundig. The Grundig lists for the same price, but shipping is less and you get easier return privileges and a warranty, so if/when I get another one, it will be the Grundig. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA We now have one review of the newly released Grundig G8 on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001QTXKF6 What is interesting here is the author's mention of the radio's great FM and AM performance, as well as the fact that the radio displays its SNR in dB. This last feature could be an indication that the G8 uses a DSP chip (despite Eton's claim to the contrary). Now that we know Eton's stated dimensions/weight for the G8 are identical to the PL-300WT (see corrected specs at http://www.etoncorp.com/upload/contents/307/G_G8spec.pdf), the question becomes, are these two radios one and the same? Re: [IRCA] PL300WT
Hi Craig/Gary/all: Just got mine today, and I think I have a rare aligned one, in that I put an 8 ferrite near the antenna coil to increase the inductance, and all it did was degrade it, so mine might be just right out of the box. I compared it to an aligned WRX-911, and it is indeed the same up and down the band. I realized I could do this when I aligned the WRX-911 to help find the sweet spot on the ferrite. So, if you have a ferrite laying around, maybe bring it up close and see if a low-band station gets better, in which case your coil might be too far down the ferrite and needs to come more towards the middle? Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Hi Craig, There is currently a major discussion on the Ultralightdx Yahoo list about improving the PL-300WT's AM sensitivity by aligning the stock loopstick, but it's a rather tricky procedure. This was in response to user reports of varying sensitivity levels. Steve Ratzlaff and I have done the procedure, which involves shifting the coil on the stock ferrite bar, after removal of all the wax. The Silicon Labs DSP chip was designed to perform well in an no alignment system on AM, but unfortunately the cost-cutting Tecsun manufacturing methods have compromised the chip designers' original intentions. As a result, alignment seems the best way to ensure optimal PL-300WT AM sensitivity. 73, Gary DeBock In a message dated 6/9/2009 6:46:19 P.M. I haven't had time yet to do more than put in batteries and tune around for a couple of minutes. I was pleased to be able to figure out how to switch to 10 kHz tuning without looking through the manual. No time for much more than that--too many things going on right now. A quick glance through the manual indicates it's a fairly good English rendition. 73, Steve NE Oregon - Original Message - From: d1028g...@aol.com To: irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Monday, June 08, 2009 4:46 PM Subject: Re: [IRCA] PL300WT Hi Pete, Thank you for your comments. By coincidence, I also received another Tecsun PL-300WT today, which was my second (both from Liypn, and both with no manual of any type). I plan to run detailed tests on quality control, and performance against other stock Ultralights to confirm that the sensitivity and selectivity are identical to the previous performance of the first model (which now has a 7.5 loopstick). On both my units, you can switch between MW and LW simply by pushing the LW/MW button when the unit is operating. The unit gives one beep for switching to LW, and two beeps for switching to MW. The rapid tuning function is a normal digital feature of the radio, which tunes at a faster rate when the user makes wide frequency sweeps. It then returns to the 1 kHz or 10 kHz step mode (whichever is selected) when the user's rapid tuning stops. Since our locations are so close, I'll be checking the same fringe stations that you listed (during your quick band sweep) on the new stock PL-300WT here. I'll be interested to see if Tecsun's factory assembly of the loopstick is identical to the first model, which had the coil secured right up against the left mounting bracket. That no alignment position wasn't bad for AM sensitivity, but it turned out that it wasn't the exact optimum position. 73, Gary In a message dated 6/8/2009 3:07:43 P.M. Thanks Barry - that was my sense, but wanted to check it out. Let's hope the flatline in new stations growth leads to a total flatline of its heartbeat in general. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA AM IBOC has pretty much flatlined. The numbers really haven't changed significantly in the past year. More telling is the fact that some very prominent stations, such as WGN and WJR, have turned it off completely, and don't show any inclination to turn it back on again. The diehards, most of whom are iBiquity investors, are sticking with it for now, but it's not gaining any traction at all. I think it's a dead system walking. Thanks, Barry for all your hard work! Your site continues to be invaluable. There is a CBC-690 rebroadcaster on 860 I have been hoping to pin down, so perhaps now I can figure it out! I see the IBOC page was recently updated as well, and it is as far as I know the only good list out there. Have the number of total stations, and number of nighttime operators, gone up or down since the last update? Just curious what direction the industry is going. thanks - Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Some of you are no doubt familiar with my Canada/US AM Station Info site at http://topazdesigns.com/ambc/. I've had a few requests to include the Canadian low power transmitters in the listings, and I've finally gotten around to doing this. In order to reduce the clutter for folks who aren't interested in seeing them, the default is to not show the LP stations in the listings; however, in the station search function you'll now see a checkbox to select inclusion of these stations (if you don't see it, try clearing your browser cache or doing a shift-reload to get rid of the old version). After doing the update, I was curious to see what the current stats are on AM stations in Canada. Here's the current number for each province and territory - the first figure is full power stations (100 W or more day power), and the second is low power stations (under 100 W): AB 24 9 BC 36 43 MB 16 3 NB5 4 NL 22 4 NS 7 0 ON 46 27 PE 0 0 QC 20 24 SK 18 0 NT 3 8 NU 1 1 YK 3 8 Grand total is 201 full power stations and 131 low power stations. Re: [IRCA] Tecsun PL-300WT-- A Sizzler on AM FM, A Fizzler on LW and SW
Hey guys: I also look forward to the PL-310 and PL-380, also advertised as having DSP. If they used the chip with SW capability, then these would be much better sets for SW listeners. On the one hand, if they are otherwise the same performers for AM and FM one might just stick with the P-300WT, although having a keypad and perhaps other bells and whistles might be nice as well. Paul - it doesn't look there will be an SSB receiver with DSP, at least not this year: does it look like any of the Silicon Labs chips support SSB? Kevin Hi Paul, Thanks for the information on the PL-300WT's AM-FM DSP chip, and of course the radio's uneven performance on LW and SW certainly makes me agree with your statements. It's obvious now that Tecsun designed the breakthrough DSP performance to apply only on AM and FM, and the LW and SW bands are mediocre additions which border on the defective. I myself have been puzzling why Tecsun would even wish to include them in this innovative receiver, but I suppose that if they were lacking, purchasers might think that this was only another typical AM-FM portable receiver for local reception (which of course would be a great mistake), and pass over this receiver in favor of its 4-band competitors. 73, Gary In a message dated 6/1/2009 10:16:22 P.M. Tecsun's primary focus in developing this breakthrough model appears to have been in transforming the AM and FM circuitry to set new standards of weak-signal performance, and with superlative sensitivity and selectivity in both bands, they appear to have accomplished their purpose. However, the model does have other bands included in the package, which frankly appear to have been neglected, and border on the substandard. The Longwave band (153-513 kHz) of the PL-300WT was thoroughly searched for any possible signals at local sunset, without any results. This is not unusual for small portables with LW capability, but in most cases, one or two of the strongest beacons will at least make an appearance at sunset. The Shortwave bands of the PL-300WT are filled with local MW station spurs, and mixing products. The signal of local KSUH-1450 has a coverage of about 6 Mhz on the Tecsun's shortwave bands, from 9.5 Mhz to 15.5 Mhz. WWV on 10 Mhz is really just a mixing product with KSUH. Legitimate SW stations have anemic signal levels, to the point of being crowded out by the MW spurs. The Tropical Band is especially bad, with a sorry collection of MW station spurs and mixing products overpowering any legitimate stations. Of course the argument could be made that for a $50 receiver, Tecsun has already provided an outstanding value with the superlative, DSP-enhanced reception on the AM and FM bands. The puzzling aspect is why Tecsun would include such dreadful LW and SW sections in a model which is otherwise so superb. In summary, if LW or SW reception is your top priority in a portable, my strong recommendation would be to avoid the PL-300WT, despite its breakthrough DSP capabilities. 73, Gary DeBock **An Excellent Credit Score is 750. Re: [IRCA] Tecsun PL-300WT-- A Sizzler on AM FM, A Fizzler on LW and SW
Thanks, Paul. As I think about it, judging by what the PL200/e100 had (keypad yes, no antenna jack, no RF gain, etc.), there may or may not be much of interest to the AM and FM DXer in the PL-310/380. Without SW, the PL-300WT's 9/10 khz tuning jumps, plus the ability to program 500 stations into memory, sorta makes the keypad issue a moot point. If they use the same ferrite in all of their radios in this size range, which I strongly suspect they will, the PL-300WT may be as good as anything. I seem to recall that someone hooked one of these Silicon Lab chips up to a laptop and made an impromptu SDR out of it. One of the screens I remember seeing was where one could select the bandwidth, from quite wide to incredibly. I am wondering if this ability to select BW is available for the PL-300WT? It may be a firmware issue that canot be user-changed, but it would be something if the selectivity could be made even better! Re: [IRCA] Tecsun PL-300WT DSP-enhanced Ultralight Radio--Amazing Performance
Hey Paul: Good question. In looking back, I realized that Grundig has quite a history of making substantial changes to Tecsun/Degen models, for better or for worse: - The G5 is really the 1103 but with better ergonomics, and the two models look quite a bit different from each other. - The M400 is apparently the DE1123 without the MP3 player - The G8 is based on the PL-300WT but bigger, without DSP, and who knows what else Of course, they often import and sell models as-is, such as the woeful Mini-World M300 (Tecsun R919), the now-famous e100 (Tecsun PL-200), etc. So, it appears that Grundig is in a position to ask/tell Tecsun and Degen what they think would be a good seller on this side of the Pond and to retool the manufacturing plant accordingly. Given the performance of the PL-300WT, why they would dumb it down to the G8 is anyone's guess. Perhaps Grundig believes that such a radio should be a little bigger, and that North American consumers don't need, aren't savvy about, and/or don't want the restricted bandwidth of, DSP? Perhaps a cautionary note to Grundig here: if the PL-300WT is representative of a new wave of irresistably-priced radios that are properly aligned and perform well out of the box, and the Chinese eBay sellers continue to give good service, Western distributors might find their task of selling us radios a lot harder?? At any rate, I look forward to hearing about the G8 if/when someone takes the plunge. Since it is too big to be an Ultralight, and appears to be of lesser performance, it probably won't be me! I am likely going to save up my egg money for the PL-310 and/or PL-380, apparently the successors to the PL-200 (Eton e100). Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA I am very curious to know whether the Eton Grundig branded G8 is the same as the Tecsun PL-300WT or not. If you look closely at photos of the two radios, you will notice that some of the labels/buttons are different, and of course the quoted weight/dimensions are different too. However I find it hard to believe that Tecsun would produce two more or less identical looking radios, with completely different internal circuitry. I would rather think that Eton's photos and weight/dimensions are incorrect, and leftovers from a prototype or old design document. Any ideas? Re: [IRCA] Tecsun PL-300WT DSP-enhanced Ultralight Radio--Amazing Performance
Hey Russ: Yeah, I could see how that could go either way. If DSP is too restrictive in bandwidth and sounds muffled, then go with traditional filtering in the Americas. However, the pro for offering a DSP receiver on this side of the pond would be that having DSP filtering would allow the casual listener, in regular old AM mode, to avoid picking up the digital sidebands of the station they are listening to. I have heard that cheap receivers with barn-door wide filtering pick up those sidebands, meaning that the already-poor analog audio of an IBOC station is even worse now that they pick up the dreaded hiss of their own IBOC signal! Now they know how stations (and DXers) on adjacent channels feel... My gut tells me that the G8 borrowed the unique 24 time zone clock feature of the PL-300WT, but still has the receiver section of much lesser models. I could see how Tecsun could lift the clock feature and put it in virtually any other design. Kevin Given the performance of the PL-300WT, why they would dumb it down to the G8 is anyone's guess. Perhaps Grundig believes that such a radio should be a little bigger, and that North American consumers don't need, aren't savvy about, and/or don't want the restricted bandwidth of, DSP? Here's one guess - Most of the rest of the world isn't using IBOC to achieve digital AM. The US is. To the extent that Grundig's sales of portables is skewed to the US, that could be the answer to your question. [IRCA] The Tecsun CL-1100: the new Superadio?
Amid the delightful furor the PL-300WT is causing, another Tecsun DSP receiver, the CL-1100 may also end up causing quite a stir. Jeff McMahon, the Herculodge site owner, had one sitting around that he never actually used, thinking it was the non-DSP previous model. However, he fired it up this morning, and not only does it have DSP, but it sounds like it has a big ferrite as well, holding its own with his Sangean PR-D5 and its 8-inch ferrite. He said the sound is quite good, putting out 1 watt of power. As with the PL-300WT, FM sensitivity is off the charts, picking up normally-marginal stations like locals. This combination of sensitivity and selectivity may put this amongst the elite of portables, making receivers like the GE/RCA Superadio and, dare I say it, no it can't be, the Sony ICF-S5W, wondering what happened. Re: [IRCA] The Tecsun CR-1100: the new Superadio?
Hey Russ: Wish I had one on front of me, but I can point you to eBay item number 220419567619 and to Amazon for the specs and features. It is AM/FM (no shortwave) and is about 10x6x2.5 inches. Weight without batteries is listed as a little over 2 pounds, so kinda hefty. The 1 watt amp pushes a 3 speaker. 4 D-cells or an adapter for power. It has a thermometer, clock, and dual alarm with either a chime or radio for wake-up! It's got a headphone out jack (FM stereo there, apparently) and a line-in for MP3 players, etc. No AM antenna jack, but it has a F-connector FM antenna jack. It has a fairly big tuning knob which goes around 360 degrees. AM sensitivity is listed as 0.5 uV, which is pretty darn good; the PL-300WT is listed as 1.0 uV, so a fair difference there over the Ultralight. The FM sensitivity is listed as 3.0 uV: not sure what their reference is, but it is the same as that quoted for the PL-300WT, so based on Gary's and Jeff McMahon's experiences, it is hotter than any other portable out there. Both bands on the PL-300WT have DSP filtering, and I'd bet it's the same for the CR-1100, so basically best-in-class. Jeff didn't notice the birdies and other defects normally noted on portables, so perhaps the DSP takes care of that as well. Gary said that the images 910 khz down from strong locals are absent on the PL-300WT. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA So now what are the rough specs on this one - bands, size, performance on other than AM, etc. ? [IRCA] 1710 Mystery Station - not near Seattle?
Hi Pat/all: I tried for it last night, and had a het on the H-900 whip but nothing on a Quantum Loop tied into a larger crate loop. Given that it only appeared on an untuned antenna, I suspected that it was the KIRO-KOMO mixing product, so I tuned the Quantum Loop base unit to 1000 and 710, and sure enough the het appeared with audio from those two stations. So, my guess is that it's not anywhere near the Seattle/Tacoma area, since I would at least get a weak het on it. What I heard the other night was probably the mixing product. I'm not that far from Everett and Bellingham as the crow flies, either, with a water path to them. Re: [IRCA] New Palstar tunable ferrite loop on their webpage
Hi Steve: Thanks for the link! I gotta say, for a lot more than the Quantum Loop goes for, it seems that you get less: modest ferrite length, no azimuth tilt, no Q control, and no external antenna connection. I'm sure it's built like a tank, though. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA From a note posted today on the yahoo Palstar group, the new LA-30 tunable ferrite loop is now listed on the Palstar webpage. http://palstar.com/la30.php There's a preliminary manual and schematic you can download, and some pictures. A MW loop head is standard with extra-cost optional LW and low-HF loop heads. No length for the ferrite rod is given but comparing with the 8.25 wide enclosure, the rod looks to be around 5-6 long. No tilting of the loop head, just the usual horizontal rotation. An internal picture shows a very large tuning capacitor; the schematic says it's 1100 pF. Only $329 for this unit with the MW loophead, and $60 each for the two optional loop heads. (I wonder how Gary's Slider ferrite rod compares--my bet is on the Slider, which seems to be a longer (more sensitive) ferrite rod compared to the Palstar's. With a little effort one could make LW and HF Slider rods as well.) Re: [IRCA] Perseus SDR and Slinky Flag Antenna
Hey Guy/Dennis: What do the dimensions look like for the unit on the video? I am guessing a square about 8 feet per side. At that rate, two slinkies would do it. For David to be picking up TA on 790 in his attic is remarkable indeed. For those of us without an attic to exploit, I am wondering if four lengths of PVC formed into a square would be good for this, and could probably be taken down and reassembled easily if one was not able to leave it up 24/7. While David had the horizontal slinky supported with taught string or clotheline, the horizontal PVC arms/legs could serve this function as well. A more permanent outdoor unit could be constructed using wide-diameter PVC formed into a square, such that the slinky was able to run inside the PVC and be sealed up. Hmmm... I think I'm suddenly busy this weekend Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Hi Dennis, A few months ago the Youtube video you mention made the rounds of the Perseus Yahoogroup and a couple others I belong to. I correspond occasionally with David Hamilton, the DXer who came up with the Slinky Flag. Re: [IRCA] Perseus SDR and Slinky Flag Antenna
Hey Dennis: Haven't looked around at the brick and mortar stores, but there are a few vendors on eBay with several for sale. By filtering for only Buy It Now sales, there are various sources which, for four of them, would be less than $20 with shipping (assuming the seller combines shipping). That may be the way to go, since I'm not sure where I could pick any up around here. There appear to be several sizes (Jr. size, 1.5, 2, etc.) - the one to get is the original 2.75 outside diameter one. Given that the flag should have verticals about half the height of the horizontals, perhaps three slinkies (one cut in half for the verticals) would suffice? Kevin Hi Kevin, Let me know what store you buy your slinkys at. I checked Fred Meyer today and none found. Maybe Toys R us? He continues to do very with with TA DX using this antenna, which looks admittedly sloppy and close to interfering house wiring, etc. It sure works well for him! I bought some Slinkys with the idea of trying them here sometime on the structure that currently supports my rotating ALA100. 73, Guy Atkins Puyallup, WA www.perseus-sdr.blogspot.com Date: Mon, 4 May 2009 23:11:33 + (UTC) From: vroom...@comcast.net To: IRCA irca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: [IRCA] Perseus SDR and Slinky Flag Antenna Saw is on You Tube, a guy in Scotland has his Perseus SDR connected to a Slinky Flag antenna in his attic. Re: [IRCA] 9 Foot Longwave Box Loop (and other projects)
Hey Gary: Wow, and I thought my 42 diagonal LW box loop was effective: yours probably has another 6 dB gain if my math is correct. Are you hearing the LW from Europe tonight that guys on the IRCA board are talking about?? If one wanted to use this behemoth for LW beacons, which go from about 200 to 530 khz, you would probably need about 15 turns or so; perhaps 375' of wire. My loop tunes 200 khz to about 600 khz, for which I had to use about 330' of wire, I think. To do both the LW band down to 153 khz all the way through 530 khz for beacons, I guess you'd need to switch out some capacitance, or wind the coil in two contra-wound coils and switch those out parallel/series. So, what are you bribing your neighbors with such that they don't run you out of town Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA If you could add a couple more wraps to drop it to 150 khz, you would cover the whole LW band, as the broadcasters start at 153 kHz and go up to 279 kHz. Re: [IRCA] Cascaded loop antenna
Hi Rick: I have been reading it, and while I am not looking to set up a diversity arrangement necessarily, I am trying to figure out what a cascaded loop would do for me. I sounds like it will attenuate the strong on-great-circle incident signal component (or its diffracted component indoors) relative to scattered fields of nearby origin. To reject skywaves, such an antenna must be able to attenuate great-circle modes arriving at various elevation angles. So, it sounds like a CLA will reject sky-waves, perhaps high-elevation skywaves from strong semi-locals, and instead preferentially receive low-angle signals that might be coming from overseas? That's what I would LIKE it to say, but not sure what all his terminilogy means. Any insights on your end?? Thanks - Kevin sa...@sounddsl.com wrote: Hey Rich: I stopped by the library today and found the article - very interesting stuff! It's for MW and SW. Re: [IRCA] Long-term Breakdown of the Sony SRF-59 Tuning Capacitor
If you're in the market, there are a couple used ones on eBay now, as well as what look like a mis-labelled SRF-39, advertised as an M78. Check out item number 320361109157 - may go for cheap! It certaily doesn't look like an SRF-49, so it must be a 39. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Hi Saul, Thanks for your comments about the SRF-59, and SRF-39FP. These two radios were enormously popular in the early days of the Ultralight boom, and still have a devoted, cult-like following-- mostly in Canada, it seems. Rob Ross' amazing success with his SRF-59 (and various samples exported by a fanatic American) may have had something to do with this. Even today, there are many DXers around the world who prefer these Sony analog ultralights to anything else, primarily because of the great challenge they offer. The SRF-39FP prison radio is far more ergonomically agreeable than the SRF-59, and it was fast becoming the analog ultralight of choice last year, until the Florida eBay seller finally exhausted his stock. It is still available from the San Quentin (California) prison system, with the ordering form link available upon request. 73, Gary In a message dated 4/22/2009 6:48:44 A.M. I am finding, however, that my FP skips off frequency, by one or two whole channels, all on its own, occasionally. Which is a pain in the %* because it's a pain in the %$* to figure out where on the dial you are in the first place. Not that it stops me...it's my radio of choice at certain times under certain conditions and circumstances. Still, I find this whole exercise worthwhile, and am glad I have the Sonys that I have. Some of you have purchased other ULR radios that have turned out to be superior, both in terms of manufactured quality and ease of DXing (some with digital readout, for example - I've seen Robert Ross' Sangean in action and am impressed). The scratchy tuner problem was originally observed in about 10% of new SRF-59 units in late 2007, which is caused by the breakdown of the dielectric material inside the tuning capacitor. The problem only was evident when the SRF-59 was tuned on AM, especially when tuned quickly from one side of the band to the other. Evidence now strongly indicates that this SRF-59 issue is congenital, due to a low quality tuning capacitor used by Sony to cut manufacturing costs. My original three SRF-59 units from late 2007 were all free of this problem when purchased and aligned, but all three have now developed the scratchy tuner. This includes the unit which received JOAK-594, JOIB-747 and HLCA-972 in November of 2007, which motivated me to write the SRF-59 review. Apparently over a period of several years, the SRF-59 tuner component inevitably breaks down The Sony SRF-39FP and other Sony analog CXA1129N IC chip-based radios apparently do not have this tuning capacitor issue, due to a higher quality tuner component used in manufacturing. For those with an SRF-59 enjoying great DX, you may wish to secure one of these other Sony analog units for a backup. 73, Gary DeBock **A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Re: [IRCA] Loop antenna
Hey Saul: Of the commercially-available units, the Quantum QX Pro is the one as far as I know. Other active loops include the Palomar loop and Select-a-tenna active model, but they don't have the Quantum's Q multiplier (and the Select-a-tenna isn't easily tilted for azimuth nulls). Kaito has the KA-35, but haven't heard much about it. The old Kiwa loop is good, but no longer available new, and good luck getting one for under $500 used. The laws of physics limit the signal grabbing power of a ferrite antenna, expecially on the low end, so if you go with the Quantum, you can supercharge it even more with an external passive loop (the Terk is too small and won't work - I use a Crate Loop) for signal and phasing, or just plug a larger air-core loop like a crate loop directly into the base unit instead of the ferrite head for increased gain. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA I'm looking to buy a good loop antenna for the fall, when I resume active AM DXing. I'm thinking of a Quantum, but want to consider all worthy options. Re: [IRCA] KFI 640 is now IBOC
Hey Patrick: I just looked, and KFI is 977 miles from my QTH, so that appears to be far enough, and/or propagation from LA is poor (KNX-1070 is not that strong here either, and San Diego stations are rare, so I'm guessing the latter...). Close comparison of 650's sidebands last night showed that there was some noise from KFI, but not that much. KSL-1160, on the the other hand, is 698 miles away and manages to obliterate 1150 1170, while 1530-KFBK is 608 miles away and totals 1520 and 1540. KEX-1190 gets out so poorly that, even though only 152 miles away, 1180 1200 are somewhat available. Kevin Kevin, At our distance KFI's IBOC is not an issue. The quality of their signal here is not good. I never listen to any station at night running IBOC, even KEX as the skip gets ahold of it and the audio echoes and sounds awful. When KGO was IBOC for a time at night, they got tons of complaints and dropped it. I don't know if KGO runs IBOC days though. They aren't strong enough now during the day to tell. I used to listen to CtoC on KFBK as they are strong in the NW, but not since they went IBOC. I tune in on local KAST or KKOH Reno. Maybe KPNW Eugene. Re: [IRCA] KFI 640 is now IBOC
Hey Patrick: When KFI first came on the air with their new antenna a few weeks (months?) ago, they were blaring in up here, but they are noticeably weaker these days, not much stronger than when they were on their back-up antenna. In listening to KFI tonight, their audio sounds atrocious, indicating they are IBOCing. I can't say I notice their IBOC some 1200 miles to the north, although I have a strong local on 630 that covers up the lower digital sideband noise and enough occupants on 650 to make the upper digital sideband manageable. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Got the word that KFI turned on their IBOC. I can barely notice a slight amount of hiss on 630 off the SW EWE and none on 650, KSTE is stronger. Being nearly 1,000 miles from LA and no antenna really pointed to the SSE. KFI is weaker here than with their old tower that fell. KNX is still the strongest LA area station here. I do notice their IBOC, but not much. The only concern I have is with the splits. Re: [IRCA] KIRO-710 Format Change
Hey Bruce: I gotta believe someone is going down, maybe KHHO. With KRKO boosting its power, it stands a better chance, although with KIRO as an ESPN competitor with the Mariners, who knows - KRKO may become redundant? Having 4 sports stations in a market that is a lukewarm sports town (what was that basketball team's name - the Sominex?) seems excessive, even though KHHO and KRKO are technically in Tacoma and Everett, respectively. At any rate, I stand a pretty good chance of QSLing the new KIRO, even though I am a little over 10 miles from its transmitter. Poor you, some 20 miles away, their 50,000 watts may not reach you... Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA KIRO in Seattle ended its AM-FM simulcast yesterday around noon. After airing a Mariners exhibition game in the afternoon, the AM started running a continuous loop of promo announcements. Some of them are for the new AM Sportstalk format, the others remind listeners to tune 97.3 FM for the legacy newstalk programming. The new Sportstalk format, ESPN 710, will take effect Monday morning. It'll be interesting to see how well KIRO and KJR do in head-to-head competition. Re: [IRCA] TP's for 04/02/09
Hi Dennis/all: I had a pretty good final day at Long Beach as well, markedly better than yesterday but not as good as Tuesday morning, with somewhat stronger signals than Dennis was getting inland. Things started slow at 1030 UTC when I got up, and after shifting to chasing Pacific beacons from 1100-1200, a return to MW found things much improved. By 1300 UTC there was audio on many of the lower and mid-band channels. Around 1330, what appeared to be Adelaide 5AN on 891 was up with popular music and chatter, although I couldn't quite be sure. In all, a delightful 3-day DXpedition to the beach! The Long Beach peninsula is itself a great place to be, although the place I am staying (Klipsan Beach Cottages) has a fair amount of noise on LW, and I get the sense from the owners that they might not be to keen to have a bunch of BOGs and wire laid out for MW, even in the off-season. To better figure out what I am hearing next time I get to the beach, I have vowed to better orient myself to the differences in Asian languages, although I have audio recordings of all sessions so at least I can go back home and figure out what I heard. [IRCA] Long Beach Day 2 - still better than home!
Hi all: Things here at the beach were down compared to yesterday - signals weren't too bad, although no visitors from down-under this morning. I suspect that one of my neighbors left something on last night, since noise was a problem. Still, it sure beats the urban RF jungle back home! The big Japanese guns (774, 828, etc.) were in well early (1000 UTC-ish) and easily copied on a little Ultralight, although they didn't fare as well as the morning rolled on. Among things of interest there was an interesting pile-up on 603 with at least three different stations (KK and CC from the sound of them). A language note - I'm only starting to be able to distinguish between Japanese, Korean and Chinese, and highly recommend that if you come out for a DXpedition to the West Coast, you spend some time listening to streamed audio rather than cut your teeth in real time like I am doing. I wish I would have done that prior to coming out, but ya live and learn. Much to the Icom R75's chagrine, I went with only ULR's this morning, using the Sony 7600GR (in SSB with BFO detuned to produce a 300 hz tone) as a spotter. The Sony isn't tremendously sensitive, but if it was getting a het at all, chances are there was audio to be squeezed out on the slider or passive loop-augmented ULR. So, as a spotter, the 7600GR is fairly reliable go/no-go indicator. For ergonomics, I had the ULR through a pair of ear buds and the spotter through a pair of over-the-ear headphones, so I just toggled volume controls to switch between radios, rather than have two sets of headphones to take on and off. A DPDT would allow both radios to be selected to a single set of phones, so that is a future project. I also experimented with the Murata e100 slider and the Crate Loop/ULR combo to see how they did head-to-head. The Crate Loop delivers all the signal you could ask for, and using the right orientation (facing or adjacent) for selectivity allows a stock-filtered ULR to find the split-frequency station and attenuates the annoying heterodyne. However, when things got tough, the Murata filter always won in the end, in that its narrow selectivity keeps locals at bay more effectively AND almost always completely removes the heterodyne. The Murata may be somewhat tight for domestic DX, but as Gary has been preaching, it is indispensible for TA/TP work. [IRCA] Long Beach, Washington DXpedition - Day 1
Hi all: Greetings from Long Beach, WA! It's about 60 miles south of fabled Grayland, WA, and a whole lot further away from my strong locals in Seattle. I'm with the girls, staying in a stand-alone A-frame cottage with no RF to speak of, and an extra bedroom full of all my stuff. I'm about 800 feet or so from the beach. I am using an Icom R75 and a dual Crate Loop plugged directly into a Quantum Loop base unit as the main spotter receiver. (I also have a few Ultralights and larger portables.) While no Beverage or other outdoor antenna is being used, this morning didn't really require one! I got up at 0330 local (1030 UTC), and delightfully found hets on virtually every 9 khz channel, and at least 25-30 had intelligible audio. The powerhouses were in on the smallest of Ultralights, with armchair copy on 594, 774, 828 and 972 khz. 693 was battling 690-Vancouver and 747 was battling KXL-750, but both came in well on the little guys with help from a passive Crate Loop. 774 was in well all morning and lasted until well after local sunrise, embarrassing 770-Seattle at times. The highlight was at 1356 UTC when both 774 and 891 came in from Australia. I got 891 barely mumbling on the WRX-911 barefoot, but with the Crate Loop the horse racing report came in well, as well as a TOH ID. 774-ABC was only strong enough to hear on the R75/Dual Crate combo. I was struck at how un-dominant the Portland stations are here. Long Beach must be in something of a Portland shadow, while Seattle stations were much more meddlesome. Also, 690 out of Vancouver was amazingly strong, whereas near Seattle where I live (much closer to Vancouver), it often struggles to be heard, so I must live in a Vancouver shadow! Some equipment notes: - The e100 Slider with the Murata filter did very well, picking up much of what the spotter receiver was hearing. However, with the Crate Loop augment, the Slider was hearing a lot more. In many instances, mumbling on the Slider was rendered clear with the Crate Loop. So, if I had to take only one radio and loop to the beach, that combo would be it. - The Sony M37V, with its replacement filter, did OK but often needed help. The Crate Loop really helps out with the selectivity if the correct orientation (facing/adjacent) is chosen. - The Kaito WRX-911 fared quite well, although the lack of digital readout can be a drag at times when chasing TPs. I also have a Sony 7600GR, SRF-39 and Tecsun PL-450 along, but there wasn't enough time to try all of them. So, for my first proper DXpedition, quite a morning. Time for a nap and some sightseeing with the girls, then up again early tomorrow for Round 2. Re: [IRCA] Tecsun question
Hi Steve: I ordered a Tecsun R-1210 from DPMega a few days ago (a week?) from seller DPMega, who seems to take a few days longer to ship than tquchina. This is based on an earlier order from DPMega which arrived about two weeks after I ordered it. As far as I can tell, DPMega is the only seller that has the 1210. I sorta doubt that anyone has received an R-1210 yet, since it was only recently realized that, according to Tecsun's curious way of quoting specifications, it may potentially have a better tuner than other Tecsun models. I will know how good it is in a few days when I receive it, and will let the group know if in fact the specs that Tecsun quotes are accurate, and if the tuner (at least the AM side) is the same as the 911 et al. For less than 10 dollars, I'm willing to roll the dice... Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA IRCA, Can someone who has recieved one of the Tecsun R1210s from dpmega, tell me about how long it took to arrive? Re: [IRCA] Tecsun question
Hey Gary: I am a bit circumspect as well on the higher sensitivity number on the 1210, but based on how they quote the FM sensitivity (10 uV for the more-sensitive R-912 versus 5 uV for the less-sensitive R-911), I decided to take a chance. Normally the lower number is better, but Tecsun appears to have its own scale?? On FM, the R-1212A, R-1210 and the R-912 have the 10 uV spec, and all others including the R-911 have 5 uV. AM sensitivity for most models (909, 911, 912, 9012, and 1021) is quoted as 1.0 uV, except for the then-top of the line 1212A and its successor 1210, which are quoted as 1.5 uV. I am hoping/presuming that they would put the best stuff in the more expensive models, so we'll see! PS - the XYL says that a radio I ordered, presumably one from DPMega on March 16th, arrived this past Monday the 23rd, so 7 days to the West Coast is pretty good! I am in Alaska right now, so I have to wait until the weekend to get my mitts on it. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Kevin and Steve, The eBay seller dpmega has been one of the quickest shippers of cheap analog portables like the Tecsun R9012 and R911, at least to me. Also, the Tecsun R1210 sensitivity specs on MW actually are worse than on the R9012 and other Tecsun analog models (namely 1.5mV/m for the R1210, versus 1.0mV/m for the R9012, R911 and others). This indicates some component substitution in the R1210 resulting in reduced MW performance-- the main reason I didn't order one of these models myself. 73, Gary In a message dated 3/25/2009 9:29:00 A.M. Re: [IRCA] Tecsun PL-600 LW-MW-SW Portable
Hi Gary: Thanks for the review! You're willingness to get and try out new receivers is a great benefit to us all. I have three hopefully easy questions. 1. A question on the SSB: how stable is the BFO after warmup? In other words, would using this in ECSS be an annoying warble-fest as the zero-beat is slowly lost, or does it settle down to allow good ECSS listening? The Sony 7600GR (mine, anyway) stabilizes after about 15 minutes, allowing the selection of either sideband, a great DX asset, but I have heard from several others whose 7600GR simply won't stabilize. You're right about the limited BFO range of the 7600GR - mine has a range of +2.2 khz and -1.8 khz, meaning that you can go either 2 khz down or 1 khz up and still get a zero beat, a sort of poor man's passband tuning. If the PL-600 is plus/minus 2.5 khz, you could detune 2 khz in either direction. 2. Does the SSB allow the use of the Wide bandwidth? On the Sony 7600GR, shifting to SSB restricts you to only the narrow bandwidth. 3. If the answer to #2 was yes, does the Wide bandwidth cause fluttering in ECSS on AM signals? On many sets, if the filter bandwidth is too wide, the opposite sideband starts to leak through, and the ECSS signal starts to flutter. It would be nice to have a set that allows higher-fidelity single-sideband reception, sort of a poor-man's emulation of the Drake R-8B's Selectable Synch mode with its 6 khz filter. If the PL-600 does flutter in Wide bandwidth, can you detune a couple khz, re-zero beat it, and get rid of the flutter, since you are 2 khz further away from the offending sideband? Thanks for any info! Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Hello All, One of the newest SSB models from China, the Tecsun PL-600 is obviously designed to compete with the Sony ICF-SW7600GR, with very similar size, shape and features.?As a much newer model, however, it has superior digital features and a much lower price-- $65.95 plus $24 shipping, from the eBay seller tquchina. Although this model is seriously oversized for Ultralight radio qualification, it does have one stellar quality that would thrill any?pocket radio transoceanic DXer-- the ability to act as a compact SSB spotting receiver, with a sensitive and selective AM section. Its 4 x .4 loopstick is identical to that of the new PL-450, and provides highly directional nulling capability to identify?transoceanic SSB carriers.?In addition, its SSB?fine tuning range covers about?5 kHz?of total spectrum, giving it greater flexibility than the?more narrow SSB tuning range of the ICF-SW7600GR (which is switched between LSB and USB).?The?BFO circuitry?is also stable enough for routine copy of amateur radio?SSB and CW signals. As in the ICF-SW7600GR and ICF-2010 models, the PL-600 has a broadbanded, fixed loopstick which doubles as the LW antenna. These loopsticks have two fixed coils with no alignment system, making them?a completely different type of antenna than the single-coil E100 and C.Crane SWP loopsticks, both of which can be replaced by a sliding-coil transplant providing greatly increased sensitivity.?In the case of the PL-600 (and also the ICF-SW7600GR and ICF-2010), greatly increased sensitivity can be obtained by matching the stock coil inductances in a longer composite ferrite bar loopstick transplant, however. As a stock model, the SSB-equipped PL-600 should be a great choice for Ultralight radio DXers?needing a spotting receiver for transoceanic DX possibilities.?Strong?TA or TP carriers on a PL-600 should indicate a great chance for stock Ultralights like the E100, C.Crane SWP or DT-400W to receive their first transoceanic DX signals.?As one of the lowest priced, relatively?competent SSB portables on the market currently, the new Tecsun PL-600 can really help the beginning TA or TP DXer discover the thrills of transoceanic DX?at a very reasonable?cost. 73, Gary DeBock ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] HDTV hash solved! (whew...)
Hi all: Thanks to the many suggestions and ideas. I tried 'em all, and the one that worked was to minimize the length of coax between the little UHF circular antenna and the converter box. The converter box itself gives off a little RF but only up close, similar to most modern electronic gear. However, when you hook up an external antenna, the digital converter apparently radiates the noise over the antenna feed cable. I had an elaborate switching network for when I utilized more than one antenna, and bypassing all that got rid of the noise. Hope this helps someone else faced with this problem! Hash is a gentle descriptor - it was more like a solid high-pitch whine/buzz which precluded DX on the lower band. Fortunately, peaceful coexistence has been restored between my DXing and the girls' TV viewing (in fact, the signal on the TV is a little better!). Re: [IRCA] What's your closest unheard AM station?
I recently picked up a nearby graveyarder, and now my closest unheard is now 1240-KXLE in Ellensburg, WA, about 103 miles away. Like Bob, the terrain does me in (Cascade Mountains), and I have never even had a nibble on this one. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Well, almost 55 miles: KDAC 1230 Fort Bragg, CA. at 60 miles. I've lived here almost 11 years and through all hours of the day, all seasons and a variety of receivers and antennas, I haven't even been teased. Granted, its a unique combination of distance and terrain, but you would think the law of averages would at least toss me a crumb. Hey Rick: Over here on Bainbridge, 930-Bellingham is also tough to get even with the mostly-water path. Usually 930-Yakima comes in if anything during the day - forget about it at might. I'm a few miles closer to Tacoma and get 850-Tacoma (and its IBOC buzz) fairly well, but at nights KOA-Denver often rules the roost. Kevin Hi Dennis, I think there's supposed to be a 930 in Bellingham, but I've never heard it from northeast Seattle. The 850 in Tacoma is amazingly weak here, but I _can_ hear it. -- Rick ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] KOIT beats KGO in Holiday ratings
Wow, a chink in the armor! I would presume they are back on top now, but it goes to show you what playing what people want to hear will do for ratings. I see KGO as one of the last remaining classic stations that primarily uses its own programming and cultivates listenership throughout its entire part of the country/continent. Before the local here on 820-KGNW came on, KGO used to appear in the Seattle-area ratings lists(!). I listen to KGO myself, but with 820-KGNW a mere 11 miles away, I have to use LSB-Synch. Kevin -- Good Afternoon, Read on the Portland Radio PDX tha KOIT beat KGO for Holiday ratings period. KOIT played all Christmas starting Nov. 21. [IRCA] Larger crate loops, and direct-coupling to the Quantum Loop base unit
Hi all: Ive continued to tinker with these loops, stacking crates together to make larger units, using the contra winding technique to get a lot more wire on and cover larger frequency ranges, and hooking them directly into my Quantum Loop base unit in place of the normal ferrite loopheads. The results have been quite positive, and I have updated the Crate Loop article on DXer.ca with a bunch more options and details. http://www.dxer.ca/index.php?option=com_docmantask=cat_viewgid=87Itemid=77 73 Kevin Schanilec Bainbridge Island, WA ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] Palstar Receivers
Hey Russ: I don't have one, bheck out Gerry Thomas' review (he of Quantum Loop fame) of the Palstar, where he compares it with a Drake R8 and NRD-535. On a test with a 590 khz/591 khz situation, the R30 did pretty well. His review is at: http://www.chowdanet.com/markc/webpage/WN1ION1967/palstar_r30_review.pdf 73 - Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA I don't know how many of you might have one of these, but I'm wondering how they preform in terms of selectivity near a strong signal. Can it separate a 1 kHz split with readable audio adjacent to a reasonably strong signal ? ( I realize with a very strong local, it's a separate case, requiring nulling of some sort. Re: [IRCA] Palstar MW550P + Box Loop Antenna
Hi Brandon: I would think it is possible. I have heard that the schematics are on the Palstar site, and it would be a matter of figuring out how to tie in the inductor of the box loop in place of the inductor already in the MW550P box. Steve Ratzlaff has taken one of these apart and may be able to provide more specifics. I have been doing similar things with the Quantum Loop base unit. Using the Crate Loop, I have wound substitute heads to take the place of the ferrite heads, and now have a LW, MW and SW (1.8-10 mhz) versions of crate loops which plug directly into the base unit, with the base unit sitting inside the crate itself. I've cc'd your personal email with some pictures of the LW version (which uses for crates stacked together), while the MW and SW each use one crate. The gain over the corresponding ferrite head is appreciable (15-20 db at least) - in fact you have to turn the gain down to avoid overloading the circuitry, which is perhaps something to watch on the MW550P (which has a 15 db attenuator as I recall). If you have access to a Quantum Loop, Palomar Loop or similar base unit, this might be the easier way to go, since you don't have to open up the unit and make any changes. Drop me a note off-line if you want more details on this. Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Hi Nick, A tuned loop already has a lot of preselection capability, so the selectivity of the MW550P might not be that useful. At 12 dB maximum, it's not really high gain, but high gain probably wouldn't be needed in your location unless the loop antenna was quite small. Or were you thinking of replacing the 550P's internal inductor with the winding of your loop antenna? Since the MW550P has a large 6:1 vernier tuning capacitor, I was thinking the MW550P could replace the loop tuning capacitor completely and that it could perhaps sit inside the crate loop. Is this feasible? 73, Brandon ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] 1530
Hey Nick: Good haul! I heard Fox Sports for a while a few weeks ago - never got an ID but it was most certainly them. KFBK is both sky and ground wave here, so phasing is kinda hard. How do you fare phasing 810-KGO to hear WGY? Kevin Been playing around with some phasing here and am hearing WCKY with KFBK down in the weedsno firm ID yet, but Fox Sports Radio mention and is leading the WCKY webstream by about 7 seconds. Been years since I heard this(unless somebody else is running Fox Sports...if so, not in my new NRC log) Given that this runs non directional until KFBK sunset, I suppose it's not that unlikely, but it's pretty darn good just now (0056UT). Re: [IRCA] Palstar MW550P + Box Loop Antenna
Hey Brandon: It should work great. I have a MW550P and the Palstar AA-30 preselector-preamp. The AA-30 works great with a Terk Loop, and the resulting signal is equal to a Quantum Loop (of course, you have to tune two things instead of one, but I like tweaking). The MW550P might be better suited since it has two different impedance inputs, and the box loop sense coil might have a pretty high impedance. Let us know! Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA I have been working on setting up my shack today, and un-boxed a Palstar MW550P Active Preselector/Tuner that I've had for years and never used much. I know that it features a very large capacitor along with 6:1 vernier tuning, so I can't help but think: Can this be used as a tuner/amp for a box loop?
