[IRCA] CJLO 1960 QC heard in ON testing

2008-09-10 Thread saulamdx
CJLO Montreal 1690 is testing and was heard overnight at Burnt River ON last
weekend. Mixing with stations in ON IL and MD.

On my Sony ultralight radio, of course...

[IRCA] 710 + Cuba + IBOC = Mess

2008-08-24 Thread saulamdx
WOR's Tom Ray is complaining about interference from Cuba. Has anyone heard
this station? Is it using the Rebelde xmtr or is Rebelde still being heard?
Don't the Cuban authorities know that 710 and neighbouring frequencies are
pretty much a dog's breakfast even without their help?

For full story: http://www.rwonline.com/rwi_news

From Radio World International Newsbytes ...

Is Cuba Interfering With U.S. Broadcasts?

8.19.2008

From last week's The Leslie Report —

WOR's Tom Ray says a Cuban station on 710 kHz is shooting a powerful nighttime
signal up the eastern seaboard and interfering with his New York AM station and
possibly others.

The Cuban station is broadcasting American music, with a Spanish-speaking DJ
and no ID, says Tom, who is also a Radio World contributor.

How does he know where the signal originates? The FCC used monitoring stations
around the country, and located the source of the transmitter in Cuba,
according to Ray. In Utica, N.Y., this Cuban station had a local-grade signal.
An FCC source told Tom he estimated the station is pushing at least 500,000
watts (and possibly up to a million) up the coast. Ray also believes the
agency's hands are tied on this one by the State Department.

... story continues, click on link above.

[IRCA] Scandinavian AM News

2008-08-24 Thread saulamdx
The latest print copy of Radio World has several newsbytes TA AM DXers should
note. The summaries are mine:

* The Swedish government has asked its broadcast regulator to evaluate interest
in the operation of local commercial stations on AM. There is already some
interest being expressed by a private company.

* The Faroe Islands parliament has approved state funding to purchase two 50KW
transmitters to replace a single 200KW one on 531. Energy costs have risen, and
the tube has failed often, putting the station off-air. They tried a
second-hand tube but it proved unsuitable. The two transmitters will apparently
both run on 531 and the standard operational power will be 50KW but may rise to
100K by adding the second transmitter whenever appropriate. They're also
looking to upgrade FM signals to manage remote area reception. To be honest,
I'm not quite understanding how a second transmitter can increase the overall
power from 50 to 100KW.

* A Danish item mentions 234 longwave in Kalundborg, at 300 KW. I'm not sure I
understand the following - an actual transcript from the copy: The transmitter
has a power of 300 KW. Broadcasting on 234 KHz, public service broadcaster
Danmarks Radio (DR) has used the station around the clock for its national
Program 1 service. Though, as part of budget-saving measures, it is switched on
only for special transmissions, DR is determined to continue renting the
location for the next five years. I don't know how 'around the clock' can
equate to 'only for special transmissions'...

Bruce Portzer (and maybe others, haven't read all my mail yet) points out it's

I believe 243 kHz (rather than 234, an apparent typo)
 operated full time
until a few years ago, when it was shut off due to lack of
 listeners and
large power bills. The rest of the network (mainly FM)
 continues to
operate 24/7. It would have been more clear if they'd
 said it is now
 switched on...

[IRCA] ULR ultralight radio scores on FM

2008-06-09 Thread saulamdx
Gary and all other ULR Radio FANatics will be pleased to know I logged a couple
distrant statiooons on E-skip on FM with the Sony SRF59 on June 4. From Burnt
River ON. One of these, a station in Topeka KS on 100.3, is a new catch, and
was a shock because I have a strong semi-local in Barrie ON on 100.3 I was
unable to null with 'higher-end' equipment. But it was clear as a bell on the
ULR, completely obliterating CJLF Barrie. Further experimentation is needed,
but this thing is worth watching on FM as well as AM.

[IRCA] 920 CJCH Halifax NS moving to FM

2007-11-30 Thread saulamdx
920 CJCH Halifax NS gets CRTC permission to move to
101.3 FM. They would have three months from the date
they sign-on, on FM, to close 920.

For all the sordid details:

www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Decisions/2007/db2007-410.htm

This will have minimal impact here in Ontario. Now, if
we could get CKNX Wingham ON to move to FM, that would
open up the channel here. Perhaps this will all be
done in time for next year's DXpeditions to Miscou NB,
where it should make a serious difference, and to
Cappahayden NL, where it should make it even easier
for Brazilians and other Latins slip through.

[IRCA] West Coast to Maine (and such phenomenae)

2007-11-26 Thread saulamdx
Is it possible that the signal was somehow distorted
in its relatively lengthy route to your radios on the
west coast, and that the speed of the code seemed
different? The time of this test was possibly optimum
for the west coast. Every report I've seen of
DXpeditions on the northern east coast (NB, NF)
suggests receptions to western Canada and nw U.S. just
before local (east coast) sunrise. I had the same
experience in NFLD last month...1700 just before
sunrise, also 1050 and 1290 in MB... and Jim Renfrew
had a tentative 1000 in Seattle around the same time
frame. The DXers at Miscou have often had BC and AB
stations, like this. This phenomenon strikes me as
almost as interesting as pulling in Europe, Asia and
Africa, and also makes me wonder if the right antennae
- direction-wise etc - would make the coastal Canadian
maritimes ripe for logging trans-pacifics and down
under.

I hope to go again, and I hope to set up some
experimental wires.

--- Steve Ratzlaff [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I wasn't able to participate in the test, but I've
 listened to both Bill's
and Barry's audio clips of the morse
 code--transcription follows:
WCXH WCXH WCHX MONTICELLO, MAINE WCXH WCXH WCXH (14
 upward-sweep tones
 follow the code)
Note the third code group is an erroneous
 transposition of the station
callsign! The speed indeed is slow--one could write
 the dots and dashes down
and then decipher them afterwards with a code table,
 even if one didn't know
the code, at that slow speed. LF NDB's use similar
 slow code for that very
reason--the pilot can copy the dots and dashes and
look up the ident if he
really wants to verify the signal on a particular
 frequency is the one he's
 expecting.
The use of a comma (dah dah di di dah dah) following
 the city is not often
heard. I used to copy the merchant marine press
 broadcasts sent to ships at
sea--since the copy being broadcast was
 machine-generated, it used all the
 various morse code punctuation
 characters--parentheses, semicolons, etc.
Most of those characters would only be heard on
 those press broadcasts and
 nowhere else.

[IRCA] Rebelde and/or RCH on 530?

2007-11-26 Thread saulamdx
...I'm still reading the 630.??? Rebelde RNV thread,
but I have also noticed Rebelde the dominant station
at times on 530 this fall, whereas last season it was
Radio Cadena Habana. I'm noticing the same with
various reports, but also reading reports here that
offer information that strikes me as conflicting. Are
there two Cubans using 530 or does it appear to be one
signal, perhaps RCH switching to rebelde on a fairly
frequent basis (at least at night)?

Saul

I've been hearing Radio Cadena Habana on 530
 kHz most every
evening for about a week now. I hear
 something under their
   signal, probably TC.

Since I don't speak Spanish, I'll take your word
 for it! The two
stations sound a lot alike, but TC preaches
 sometimes, because it is
Christian. No doubt the Cuba station is on the air
 to jam the TC
 Christian station.

 Bruce,

It's Radio Rebelde set up to jam Marti (when it's
 on the frequency).
You'll note that Rebelde runs a more dense level of
 modulation than
the other nets (especially Reloj). Thi serves to
 jam the station to
be blocked. Note Rebelde on 710 to jam WAQI and on
 670 to jam WWFE.

[IRCA] New north-south wires rock

2007-11-26 Thread saulamdx
...yes, wires in the plural. I added a second short
one. Yesterday's wire, 300 feet or so going ever
slightly NNW, performed very well, yielding WADC WV on
1050 during SSS and then this morning a tentative on
WOAY 860 in WV, both beneath strong semilocals in
Toronto. I decided to run a wire to the south - and it
pretty well does go south (without checkin an actual
compass, I'm going on my sense of direction here).
Anyhow, I decided to stick with NNW to start, and SSS
yielded a solid ID on WOAY and a station that is a bit
close but has been eluding me and much wanted despite
many attempts at it - WPYT 660 in PA with a great ID.
I've since been switching back and forth between the
two wires. Lots of Cubans and some suspected Venezuela
and Mexico. I have had a het on 630 suggesting what
appears to be the off-frequency venezuelan on 631.26+.
Not strong enough for audio.

So three new catches in two SSS sessions, plus lots I
didn't get to ID. The wires aren't long because I
don't want to cross land owned by neighbours I don't
know well.

[IRCA] The Truth Behind Radio Coro (was 780 DX TEST)

2007-11-25 Thread saulamdx
Far as I know -- and please correct me with specifics
because I would need Cuba on 780 - there is no Cuban
on 780. But there is a strong Venezuelan that goes by
the name of Radio Coro. And here, I think, is the root
of the confusion. Despite the mutual sympathies
between Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, the name Radio
Coro precedes the advent of Chavez, and is - sadly -
not in tribute to our esteemed Cuban DX colleague and
friend Arnie Coro of Radio Habana Cuba. Though it
could be argued that a station bearing his namesake
would be a fitting tribute to someone who has served
radio afficionados the world over.

My guess is that you heard the Venezuelan Coro (99
percent certainty here), or possibly something else
(the one percent factor). Some have reported a
tentative Mexico in the mix. The Mexican were up last
night for about an hour or two, here in Ontario, but
780 wasn't among them.

Regardless, Radio Coro is a cat-in-the-bag phenomenon.
It is the easiest Venezuelan in these parts (so is
Erre Q on 910 but you might have Flint MI to deal
with) when cx are even slightly auroral. Lively Latin
music, usually, and frequent IDs.

[IRCA] Gettin' wired...

2007-11-25 Thread saulamdx
Had some wire and spare time this afternoon. So,
inspired by recent DX in Newfoundland, I installed a
new unterminated BOG, going NNW. (I can't go precisely
north from here because I'd have to go through a
neighbour's cottage or over his driveway). I will see
tonight how it fares given the earth's curvature. It's
the straightest yet of all my wires though it's only
about 300-350 feet. My neighbour to the south has
offered me access there, so I may put a second one,
and that one would be more accurately south, maybe a
slight slight bit west. So I'm hoping for some auroral
cx tonight to put this one to the test.

[IRCA] South wire logging

2007-11-25 Thread saulamdx
So far the new wire has paid off, though I have no
proof of directionality. At first it seemed better
than my other three at WI and IA in the X-band, which
kinda surprised me. But over course of the evning I
have logged Jacksonville FL 690, Cuba strong 770
670, PA dominant on many regional channels where
normally others are (eg WRSC 1390 PA instead of
Youngstown or Syracuse NY). But what's made it all
worthwhile so far is a new log in a solid TOH legal ID
from WACD Parkersburg WV. The Toronto-NYC one-two
knockout punch on 1050 has been pretty much a
non-starter here, but with CHUM running an
infomercial, a third station was popping in with some
oldie tunes. Th ID happened during a signal upswing
and for awhile WACD was dominant. But the south isn't
always winning. 1630 is all IA so far, not a trace of
GA. I'll lay a second wire to the south tomorrow and
compare. I'll be able to get a slighly different
angle.

[IRCA] DX test results

2007-11-24 Thread saulamdx
It was great to log it. The quality of the signal
seemed to improve as time went on. I didn't hear
anything at all in the first ten minutes (did it start
late?) and when I returned from the computer and
refrigerator by 20 past I was hearing weak sweeps.
Towards the end I was able to ID the morse code calls
letters (maybe more ccode than that, not sure), and I
even heard suspect music. I didn't tape it, because I
don't collect QSLs, and I couldn't name the tunes if
my receiver's continued performance depended on it.
But one piece sounded like the kind of marching music
I'd hear in a very bad movie about a highschool
football team. Another sounded like something I used
to hear on Channel 7 from Buffalo growing up (rapid
fire, excited kind of music). But I heard no
discernable voice whatsoever. Nor did I hear the UI
music that Bill Harms heard as a fourth station. But
that might be because I haven't a clue what UI music
is... What I can say, overall, is that what made my
morning is reading that Pat Martin in Oregon managed
to hear code (and maybe more?). This was never a
killer signal here, and that it skipped out to the
west coast is simply awesome, and an insipration to me
as I work here to organize some tests.

2007-11-24 Thread saulamdx
Thank you to those with suggestions about my Paul
harvey promo-IDs on 860.I am sure I eard PAUL Harvey,
but Niel Wolfish tossed cold water on this by remnding
me that WAMO in PA has a STEVE Harvey as a morning
host. The AL station would most likely have had to be
on day power and pattern for me to have heard them. So
I see that as a long shot and will dump this unID. I
should have taped it to listen-back, but didn't get my
tape recorder out till tonight.

Anyhow, I've logged a very weak and momentary bit of
reloj in Cuba on 930 for a new catch. Had them in
Toronto awhile ago. Cuba strong in various places from
1180 on down, venezuela and Mexico also noted, and
hets from Algeria 891 and Spain/Canary 621 are as
strong as they probably get here without producing
audio. I'm sure if I sat on them...

Tried for the Clemson game from SC on 1270 reported on
one of these lists by a DE DXer but the only sports
station there is megapest Detroit.

450 LW beacon BEHIND Dominican Republic.

I have nobody listed in my various paper lists, but
someone is poking through behind 450 PPA in La Plata.
Actually, this second station is noted on 447 USB and
is fighting for its life. La Plata is much stronger
than normal, but my unID is very weak and I'll bet it
is 448. I've made out G and Z as among the letters.
Some lightning crashes hindering things further. Not
much going on E-W with the LW beacons, but have heard
GA and NC ones with decent signals, suggesting mildly
auroral conditions. Some Cubans and Venezuelans in,
but nothing notable in terms of signal strengths.

I have a tentative on 910 in Valdosta GA earlier. I've
heard it lots in the past few years. The station in
question is playing pop and had an ad for a university
in Lakeland Florida.

I have a battery back up for the R8 now, but I am

 today was a QSL for

I heard this early this past week at Burnt River ON.
I'd read about it here awhile ago, but forgot to

LYQ as the cause. Then a day or so later it was
completely absent. This would explain...

2007-11-12 Thread saulamdx
In our case it was just 1200, and onl lasted a few
minutes while the only computer here was off. I am
sure it was a conventional radio signal of some kind,
and my guess - since the LBI folks heard it on several
channels - is that it is from central or south america
or the carribbean. Perhaps Cuba. Niel in a very brief
conversation about this last night mentioned that
Reloj has some kind of different chime or sound on
some occasions - or something to this effect.

Thanks to folks on these lists who have 'chimed' in.

[IRCA] TAs and other sunset DX

2007-11-12 Thread saulamdx
I had a great if very brief signal from Albania around
1700 on 1395, and TWR Roumoules 1467 also was solid
though weaker a few minutes later. Lots of hets, all
over the band.

1620 Radio Soleil, one of the Boston haitian pirates
with heavily-accented French and Radio Soleil ID
around 1730-1800, mixing with a new NY State Highway
advisory station that's been testing of late. I've
previously hard Energie; and soleil is new.

Poughkeepsie NY WKIP on 1450, plus an ID a bit
afterwards that sounded like 1450 WSL. Definitely
not WOL in washington. I think a letter got mangled
over the air, and my guess is the New hampshire
station (I was on my east wire), but I will try again.

Conditions seem very close in. Not much to the west at
all tonight. I have yet to check the AK indices...but
I do wonder if a bit of aurora is creeping in.

[IRCA] Questions re 506 kHz, experimental stations

I've heard Wayland MA WE2XGR/1 506 KHz the past few
nights with a killer signal. I have actually copied
several similar stations on 506, including one with
the same calls but /6. I have also had a few
variations outside those parameters.

* What are these stations, and is there a
comprehensive list of who's who? (It's awfully hard
for a morse code neophyte like me to copy the code
when there are multiple stations on the same frequency
with very close to the same ID. They often overlap,
causing the ears at this end to emit their own code,
of sorts).

* I had one set of the same calls with /6 prceded by
CQ, which I take to be a common ham term for 'calling'
... but there was what I believe was a 'z' in between.

* I also had HHH preceding yet another unID set of
calls.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Re: WFAW DX Test

2007-11-12 Thread saulamdx
I really like the idea of using UTC with DX test
notifications. But there is no avoiding the risk of a
time miscalculation. If using UTC, the person
organizing the test would need to make sure they - and
the engineer at the station- are both on the same page
in converting local time to UTC. This could get
tricky, especially close to a time change or when
dealing with an area where there is no time change.
So, no matter what system is used, UTC or local time,
the people organizing and running a test have to be
very careful to set the right time. It would of course
be pretty straigh forward for any DXer able to
calculate UTC. But wouldn't it be funny (Not!) if the
organizers of a test and the station got it wrong and
tested at a time when no one was listening... My
bottom line is I will happily go with the flow, but I
I could get very used to doing al my DX reportage and
communication in UTC, because it is universal.
However, that does not change the fact that we would
still have to take care with our time zone
number-crunching.

We're not exactly talking brain surgery here - if
 you're in Eastern

 summer, plus five hours
in the winter. So if I'm typing this at 1611 local
 standard time, I add
 five hours and...presto! It's 2111 UTC.

That said, I'm content to go with the flow depending

Thanks, all. I have looked at the site. I've had

maddening given the similarity in calls. I knew these

read more carefully when I get back to oronto

770 Virginia, new here...
1450 got legal ID for Rome NY, which has been a pest

880 had old country, suspect KRVN (heard yesterday SSS

Suspect religion on 1140 is Alberta. MB 990 in nicely.

[IRCA] WFAW DX Test

2007-11-11 Thread saulamdx
Niel Wolfish and I have swep tones and occasional bits
of morse code, at Burnt River ON (north of Toronto).

Montreal is clearly dominant with Rollye James hosting
C2C talk about UFOs. Country music is likely Yorkton

which may be WGRP Greenville PA (based on a late-night
logging yesterday).

I think we're both about done for. Some LW TAs are in
well, still, but cx have levelled off. SA is in on
540, hints of AB on 1140, but signals not as good as
past night.

This test is appreciated. New catch here.

Re: [IRCA] CHUC-less

2007-11-10 Thread saulamdx
I had Fort Wayne IN from Toronto Thursday evening, and
Holland MI Friday morning from Burnt River. Both new
logs. I logged WCTC New Brunswick NJ on SSS Friday,
for a relog. I also had music from India and other
points east, with a language that may have had a very
little bit of French in it, or be French spoken by
immigrants. Two candidates are WCEV Chicago, and CHOU
Montreal QC. I do think I heard a CHOU ID that sounded
like Shoe. Regardless, it was the dominant station
for much of last night, and it's only a matter of
time.

DX this morning...there was none. The TAs seemed to

Heard this at Burnt River this morning (Friday) at

but steady under CHUM Toronto with no sign of NYC.

I was on the lookout for this one after hearing in a
few weeks ago at Cappahayden during the Newfoundland
DXpedition, also around sunrise.

Not much else loggeed by cx seemed good overnight. I
got here at 2 am and stayed up. 960 had Fox Sports
radio and later had religion, then had ESPN. Heard an
anthem at 0559 EST and then Rogers City MI was
dominant. CFFX Kingston ON was not heard overnight,
leading me to wonder if it had gone off. But it came
back gradually and was dominant around 0530...

1450 is indeed off. Heard Fort Wayne IN while still
downtown last night, and Holland MI aroudn 0730 here
this morning.

1420 CKPT is still on, but WHK Cleveland OH and WOC
Davenport A were dominant overnight. Now of course
it's all CKPT.

Heard Cuba on 530 with Rebelde, //5025 as others have
heard it. I gather this is the same station in Havana
that was heard here last year with a different name,
which I have written down somewhere...

All this on the radio Shack loop. I'll get the wires
connected today. Now, to get some sleep...

Re: [IRCA] IBOC battle begins

2007-11-06 Thread saulamdx
The broadcast bands we know and love are nothing more
than a roadway. Our receivers are the delivery truck.
The product we should care about is the programming.

The HD Hucksters driving the doomed, rickety IBOC
delivery truck are taking advantage of people in the
broadcasting business who seem not to understand that
they are in the programming business. Their business
is to put quality programming (including advertising)
where it will reach an audience. I don't give a rat's
tush what route the delivery truck takes, or whether
the vehicle is a semi, a van, or a toddler on a
three-wheeler. What I do care about as an audience is
how I will be informed and entertained.

Part of a broadcaster's ongoing, evolving - living -
business plan involves knowing where their audience is
hanging out. Just like retailers need to be savvy
about whether to locate downtown, in the suburbs, at a
mall or plaza, or on the street, or - increasingly -
online, so broadcasters need to think more
thoughtfully about location. With some exceptions,
people have abandoned AM in droves. Particularly those
under 40. People are also on the verge of abandoning
FM. People don't even watch as much TV as they used
to. The platform whose star is rising is
online, portable and enables users to hear or watch
what they want, when they want, where they want.
Increasingly, it even lets them interact, contribute
and participate.

AM sounds like crud in most urban centres, Even at my
fairly remote Burnt River DX site, the birdies from
hydro lines, fluorescent lights and computers would
turn off the average listener. (IBOC is a big, big
birdie - a pterodactyl). FM and TV over-the-air
signals are subject to line-of-sight and terrain
blockage issues. Cable only offers what the cable
operators want to offer or in regulated markets what
they are allowed to offer, not what the audience
necessarily wants to receive.

The trick is to retain as much of an OTA presence as
possible, include cable in the mix where possible, and
as quickly as possible develop, build and maintain an
online presence that above all is programming-centred
and is agile in terms of its ability to move with new
technological innovation. In other words, maintain
your brand and product over as many routes and
vehicles as possible, to keep and build your
increasingly scattered and diverse audience. The iPod
may rule with today's teenager and young adult, but
what will the delivery truck and radioset or TV look
like in a few years, as new technological innovations
occur. Personally, I am betting on satellites.
Regardless, technology is evolving in a chaotic way,
in part due to a lack of any central direction or
regulation, and in part due to open-ended
possibilities. I think the only way to possibly
harness technology advaancement and platform choice is
through an international body such as the ITU or UN,
or otherwise through international agreements.
However, I'm not sure that technological change, as
rapid as it naturally tends to occur, can be managed
without a serious shift in popular attitude or without
a dictatorial approach.

For now, broadcasters need to keep track of their
audience so they're always in sync. As it stands, AM
and FM radio stations are moving to IBOC when no one
is there. There's no promise that IBOC receivers will
be built or sold. The same happened in Canada to some
extent with DAB, although the DAB approach was (is)
perhaps a better idea than the IBOC approach because
the (planned) move to DAB involved a wholesale move to
a potentially better area of the spectrum whereas the
haphazard do-what-you-want move to IBOC is simply
screwing up the existing service before the new one is
built and working. Think about this: You live in a
rowhouse. Wouldn't it be criminal to tear down your
unit and damage the ones next door to you because you
happen to want a standalone highrise? The FCC
effectively abandoned its role as a zoning authority.
maybe the FCC should be sued for negligence.

ZIZ in well tonight again among others from Caribbean

suspect it's paraguay. I managed an ID for venezuela
on 1020 in La Asunciacion, and a city of the same name
in Paraguay is the 1020.7 or so, making things a bit
confusing for me because my Spanish is close to cero
and I have not heard a solid ID. Jim might have, we
have been busy and haven't definitively compared notes
on this one. Heard Dominican Republic religious
spanish outlet on 1680, mixing with Orlando FL area
station; Dutch pirate 1645, Greek one on 1629; Irish
weather alert station on 1677 (I think, notes are
downstairs). Band has lots of noise again tonight. The
hours caught up with us last night and we were dozing
when the WLPO DX test was widely heard west and south
of here. Tonight's Maine 780 oughta a slam dunk, we'll
do our best though the real distant stuff has
priority, least for me, given that we leave first

[IRCA] Earlier Cappahayden Report OCT 25

Cappahayden NL

No TP hets noted between 1000-1030. Hets on 1089 and
1341, but I suspect that these were Brits.

However, we did hear at around 1000 UTC KOMO 1000
Seattle, and the Tijuana 1700 station. CKWX not
heard, though there might have been hints of it the
day before.

Brazil was only adequate last night, not easy because
it seemed every station was broadcasting futbol, the
same game, I think, with different coverage.

Domestics were beating most of the late morning
signals from Venezuela and Colombia. Though we did
have nice reception of XERF 1570 and XEEP om Mexico.

We had fun picking off Brit locals in the evening.

Conditions are very good for TAs, and Saul is having
fun logging a lot of them on his first visit.

[IRCA] Brief Cappahayden report and comment on ZIZ-555

2007-10-26 Thread saulamdx
Jim Renfrew and I were pleasantly surprised to have a
good mid-late afternoon session with Europe, mostly
southern Europe, and places like UAE, Jordan, and
such. Brazil has been pounding in on many channels,
though not many IDs due to national programming and
luck. Argentina 1030 was in. I think it was yesterday
I had ZIZ 555 and 895 Nevis, both with decent signals.
Tonight 1020 Reloj is varely there, the American
clears are likewise at bay, and cx are clearly
favouring points further south. There are some Cubans,
Jim had 1150. Brazil has a sporting event live on many
channels, for you diggers. We've yet to ID any of
them, but I think it's a national game versus
Portugal, and hopefully it will end while we're awake
enough to hear an ID. 1500, 1000 and more... We dare
you!!!

Weird... ZIZ is usually one of the most prominent LA

and always stronger than VON-895. The latter was
 strong enough
to produce audio here last night, and yet there was
 not a trace of

Re: [IRCA] CBC on 1250

2007-10-02 Thread saulamdx
I can tell you that the CBC's As It Happens is carried
on many NPR stations, and at varying times that do not
coincide with when the CBC might be carrying it. I DX
a lot of FM, and to say this presents a problem with
meteor scatter is an understatement. If you hear the
words Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on a meteor
burst on some FM frequencies, it is more more likely
to be an NPR station referencing the Canadian network
as the program's source or producer, than it is to be
a CBC station, which is more likely to say 'CBC'.
Though nothing is ever guaranteed, and it's always
listener beware.

As for an earlier complaint about using terms such as
FF, jargon and shortened versions of common words and
phrases are common in any hobby. I wonder if there is
a web site somewhere that lists some of the terms --
maybe the hams have us DXers beat to that, and out of
simple curiosity I will look later on when I have
time. In lieu of such a list, I think it's perfectly
okay to use these terms, and if someone on the list
doesn't know a term, a polite query can yield a
friendly, helpful response. That's partly what this
list is for. FF means French, or Français if you
prefer. There, my French-language education hasn't
gone completely to waste. I wonder if the 'cedille'
beneath the 'c' will be viewable. I pressed alt-135
for that.

[IRCA] The end of IBOC -- and AM?

2007-10-02 Thread saulamdx
They may be snakes in this grass, and they may be
biting themselves, but lil' old Tom in NH isn't part
of that equation. The stations rely on local ad
revenue, largely from within the main contours. From
an income business point of view, they largely don't
care an IBOC hoot about their non-local audience. WJR
and WABC beancounters could care less about you. Yes,
IBOC is making it difficult if not impossible for you
to litsne to AM stations 200-plus miles away. But
that's not what is killing IBOC. What will send the
sword plunging into the beast is the fact that (1)
IBOC is killing stations within their own primary
contours and (2) it's adding significantly to the
noise that already plagues much of the AM band, making
it generally speaking an unpleasant experience.
Anyhow, I stand by my previous remarks, ages ago, that
AM is dead, with or without IBOC, and that the smart
broadcasters who will survive the inevitable
AM-ageddon will prepare for some kind of migration to
an eventual digital, wireless, satelite-based, online
world. The technology will soon be there. Anyhow,,
they will get there successfully by enhancing
programming, building a distinct identity and
raison-d'etre, building brand recognition (in a way
that honestly deserves recognition), and faithfully
serving the community or region or other audience
target. Maintaining and building the revenue base of
advertisers is also key, of course, as is immediately
establishing and maintaining a strong, active
web-based multi-platform presence (web site with
audio, video and print). And the longer they can hold
onto an actual AM-based audience, the better it will
help the inevitable, eventual transition. The sad
thing about IBOC is its potential to cause chaos in
what should be an orderly process. BTW, I think FM and
TV will also eventually head in this direction; might
take a bit longer, and the precise paths will vary.

Re: [IRCA] KOHI Still Atop 1600 Long After LSS

2007-09-22 Thread saulamdx
If you're referring to my post, and use of the word
'cheater' (you don't say which word but I think this
is a safe assumption that it is that word), then my
use of it was really intended as a term that has
arisen to define the phenomenon of a station that airs
when it shouldn't, or at a power or pattern that it
shouldn't, for *whatever* reason. Furthermore, I see
it as almost an affectionate term for the reason that
follows in my next point.

My post pointed out that 'cheaters' (and again I
intend this term as a colloquialism, not as the decree
of judge and jury) are today's DX tests, DX
opportunities if you will. And, for the record, I
think there are -- very generally speaking -- two
kinds of 'cheaters': Those which leave their signals
and or say patterns on well after sunset (which could
very well mean an equipment malfunction, and possibly
inattentive staff if the problem persists for months
on end; if this is only an occasional occurrence it
can also be due to the vagaries of propagation; and in
a few rare cases there may be personnel who simply
don't care or may even do it intentionally - one would
have to prove that, of course). The other variety is
what I call the High School Footballer: Stations which
power down or go off *immediately* after a game, even
though they should have done so at sunset. These ones
are pretty obvious, folks! But, c'mon -- would Friday
Night DXing be the same without the High School
Fotballers? The band is so ordinary so much of the
time. Early Friday evening is actually one of my
favourite times for DXing. The 1350 in MN that was
apparently at it last night is on my most-wanted list!

--- Patrick Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Guys,

I think that term should be dropped from our posts.
 First off, we don't
know the reason the station may be on high power
 and I would like to
believe it is just an error. Using that term, does
 not help with our
reationship to the radio industry. If someone feels
 a station has not
dropped power, fine, post it, but please do not use
 the negative term.

2007-09-02 Thread saulamdx
I have spoken to someone at the station and have
preliminay news many of us won't appreciate. They have
moved to FM 104.7 - i know, as I've logged it. But
they plan to stay on AM for at least a few more months
because the FM isn't reaching the full of their target
audience. It's not terribly high-powered and I can
appreciate that. I do wonder what planning went into
this move, but I don't yet know all the facts and am
holding judgement. look for it to last until at least
december, if not longer, on 1150.

I also heard 630 Sherbrooke last night. Not sure if
the other two in this set of four that flipped to FM
have left AM yet.

[IRCA] BC AB and other western stuff in ON last night

segment of the news, that was an exact match for the
ne I hear all the time on 680 (which also features
sports on the quarters). It came ut of nowhere because
NYC and Detroit were relatively dominent, with traces
of a third and fourth station at times.
NY was doing Bloomberg stuff, Detroit seemed like
sports talk. This is CKWX, BC #2 here (CBF 690 ears
ago)

- Regina 620 with ID and country, 600 Iowa, 1010 with
oldies u/CFRB and WINS. I suspect Wisconsin, as there
seems to be no other logical candidate for oldies. I
IDed a couple songs and may call the station on
Tuesday. I've been hearing this a fair bit. MN on 560
quite strong. 780 had country and I wonder if this was
maine. 940 country likely Yorkton SA.

The season has arrived here, officially!

[IRCA] Complaining about IBOC (was WBT IBOC test)

2007-08-16 Thread saulamdx
If IBOC proceeds at night and involves a significant
number of stations there won't be much left to DX, and
therefore QSL. So there's nothing much to lose by
complaining. Those of us who choose to voice our
opinion would benefit by remaining civil in any
communications, especially if we get on-air. One way
to achieve that is to consciously smile while making
your point, and to relax - see the exercise as one
small step, not as the magic call that will forever
reverse the evil world of IBOC. Slagging station
personnel won't achieve anything. If anything,
broadcasting and broadcasters, even some that adopt or
flirt with IBOC, will be victims, losing money,
perhaps even more than money. Citing actual cases of
signal erosion or loss, within primary markets if
possible, will be more effective. State case with
Spock-like lack of emotion. There is also no need to
ID as DXers. That's too much to explain to people
unfamiliar with the hobby. We're radio listeners, and
some of us (not me) are engineers, or have such skills
and expertise. Keep it simple. Keep yourself out of
the argument as much as possible. It is also helpful
to make one's point quickly and effectively. One
tactic I employ is to write down all the main points -
argument by argument, example by example, in order of
importance. Reduce each to a sentence or two, max. And
also write down your preferred answer to posible
questions. That way there's less chance of stumbling
on-air. Learn from each experience. (Tape each
session).

As for me, I'll wait and see what the actual fallout
looks like in September. If I find a legit complaint,
I'll make it. And, if the AM band becomes unDXable or
unpleasant to listen to I'll DX elsewhere - FM meteor
scatter, for instance. Wintertime can be great for
nulling semi-local FMs up here at Burnt River. My best
guess is IBOC won't fully take off, not all of the
band will be affected all of the time, and there will
be some margin for DX. Maybe this thing will
ultimately die.

At the end of the day, we have every right and even a
public duty to voice constructive concern when we see
something wrong. If that means that a few people won't
provide us with party favours, well ... too bad. Look
at the massive majority of stations that haven't thus
far gone to IBOC. I think most stations will love us.

[IRCA] Thank you re 790 CIGM 600 CKAT responses

2007-04-17 Thread saulamdx
Thanks to all of you who responded re CKAT 600 and
CIGM 790. I took a trip to Burnt River ON and 790 is
clearly dominant at night, and it shouldn't be. I'm
also hearing a *bit* more CKAT than I think is normal,
and these both fit with the pattern I've noticed this
season. Well, get 'em while you can -- a ***very***
diplomatic, friendly approach is planned. I will not
use any names of course. I just wanted to know if I
was on base or off base.

On a related note with these stations, some radio
trivia ... the only other AM stations in northern
Ontario are low-power CBC relays, and 580 CKPR Thunder
Bay which is scheduled to move to FM and sign off not
too long from now. Not much to hear up there in the
daytime on AM. The only thing that may stop them from
moving to FM is CRTC ownership limits of two FM
stations in one community for one company. Rogers
already has two in Sudbury and two in North Bay, I
believe.

Again, thanks to the many of you who responded.

Re: [IRCA] KXEL deserves a reprimand or license revocation

2007-03-06 Thread saulamdx
I think it comes down to how the opinion is expressed.
If rudely, then I'd agree with you, Les. But if a
constructive comment, put civilly, causes such
distress that stations cease to QSL or conduct DX
tests, and hold DXers in ill repute - well, I think
that's an over-reaction on their part. Although I
don't QSL anymore, I do appreciate DX tests, but I
also think stations - particularly the biggies - have
a responsibility to the listener that transcends
market doctrine. Like one DXer observed here, I wonder
what KXEL's owner thinks, in retrospect, about being
off for more than a week. Or the owners of stations
whose automation systems or staff fail and they stay
on at night when they're not supposed to. I'll bet
most of them do want to know. As a DXer, effectively a
dedicated radio listener, I am happy to help them.
I've even told a few engineers I know that I'm happy
to listen. One engineer who oversees a huge tower farm
regularly tell me when they either go down completely
or to reduced power. He's expressed interest in
knowing how they perform under unusual circumstances
in areas beyond the main contours. I only wish I had
engineering skills and the proper meters to 'read'
signals accurately. Frankly, I'm not terribly moved
about stations whose owners and/or management don't
give a damn about their listeners. Like another
lister, I thought WWL did a bang-up job during Katrina
and in the aftermath, though I continue to hold the
N.O. Times-Picayune newspaper staff as particularly
exemplary in the face of what really was a dangerous
situation. My guess is KXEL would have floated away.

 about lost revenue and the

 kinds of reasons why
 the
station decided against purchasing an emergency
 generator.

Besides, there outage has given a lot of DX'ers the
 opportunity to log
some new stations...which I thought was the point of
 this club/e-mail list.

Why so many DX'ers seem to want to sit in judgment
 about how stations
should and do conduct their affairs is beyond me.
 These posts will likely
find their way back to the management at KXEL making
 it harder to
obtain a DX test, QSL's or other consideration from
 them in the future.

My advice is to think before you post. :)

  A gold star? Hardly.

If you're setting out to serve the public,
 emergency conditions like
this are precisely when that service is most
 needed. Whether or not a
generator is an FCC requirement, and it's not,
 there's still a higher
expectation that a class A signal like KXEL will
 be prepared for the
likelihood that at some point, it will lose
 utility power.

It's also just good business sense; the revenue
 KXEL is surely losing by
not being on the air for a week must have far
 outweighed what a
generator would have cost by now.

At least KXEL isn't an EAS LP-1 or LP-2 station
 for its region - though
one of its sister FMs, KFMW 107.9, is, and I think
 it lost power as well.

Any radio station that wants to portray itself as
 a supplier of vital
information to its community should make room in
 the budget for a backup
supply of power to keep it on the air when its
 services are most needed.
You think the people of north central Iowa won't
 remember that KXEL
was missing in action this week?

[IRCA] 660, 870, 1370, and other DX Opportunities

2007-02-24 Thread saulamdx
The 660 daytimer in SC has been bombing in here two
nights in a row, with varied Christian talk
programming and IDs mostly on the TOH. I wonder how
they manage to ID ... can this all be automated and
thus the station is on by some sort of human error, or
would this be intentional, possibly?

790 CIGM ON Sudbury has been blasting in, hogging 790,
like a few years ago when they had persistent problems
that I hear were ordered resolved by Industry Canada.

1370 WKMC Roaring Springs PA should not be this loud
or consistent at night, as they should drop power, but
has been for ages...

870 WINU still equal to N'awlins the past few weeks.

These all pests, nothing too exciting at Burnt River
ON.

[IRCA] CBLI 1110 Deep River ON heard in IL (and here)

2007-02-11 Thread saulamdx
Neil Kazaross reported CBLI 1110 Deep River ON with
CBC Radio One //1550 late Sun Feb 11. Not too shabb,
at 40 watts, Neil!

I managed to get them here at Burnt River ON, for the
first time ever. Never really thought to check for
them, despite a similar report by Neil earlier this
year.

I managed to parallel them to my local 91.5 in orillia
ON with classical, jazz and eclectic piano music,
which really stood out. Had it just been talk, I would
not have been able to dig it out. But the piano,
especially, cut through the floor. It was in 3rd place
behind WBT and someone else.

Also //1550 Windsor for those who care to try. They're
now into CBC Radio Overnight, which is a compendium of
various shortwave broadcasts, mostly spoken word.

What's interesting, too, is tha I paralleled it to
1070 in Moncton, which was running // CBC in eastern
time zone. I've never noticed that before. Always
assumed all programming was an hour ahead.

Lots of NH (610, 1240, 1300 all new) on SSS tonight.
Band is pretty normal now, save some strong signals to
QC on, like, 550.
