Re: [IRCA] [ABDX] Re: Trying to solve unIDs on 540 from January 1993
I think the station near Pittsburgh used to play classical before they changed to mouse droppings (Disney). And there used to be some LPRTs on 540 IIRC. Levine's stations on 540 (I suppose he had started leasing Tijuana by then; remember they were QRM for his Hesperia station when they first came on around 1991) were changing formats every 3 months back then - jazz, showtunes, traffic, strange off-kilter nostalgia (Tony Bennett's worst-ever recordings worked into EVERY set), and eventually classical. Unfortunately I think this one will stay UNID... 73 Tim Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -Original Message- From: Rick Dau drummer1965...@yahoo.com Sender: a...@yahoogroups.com Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2012 18:00:13 To: a...@yahoogroups.coma...@yahoogroups.com; a...@nrcdxas.orga...@nrcdxas.org Reply-To: a...@yahoogroups.com Cc: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of Americairca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: [ABDX] Re: Trying to solve unIDs on 540 from January 1993 I found the date of the test -- January 4, 1993, the same morning that WNTK-1020 ran a DX test (an hour after KNAK's) and provided me with my first logging from New Hampshire. I should add that I was living in Iowa City at the time, making California on 540 seem, IMHO, rather unlikely. The reason I directed this request towards DXers in the Central and Eastern Time Zones is that I highly suspect that one of these culprits is from those regions. Or perhaps both culprits are. The fact that New Hampshire was coming in under KDKA indicates that cx to the east were favorable that morning. 73, Rick Dau South Omaha, Nebraska From: sc...@fybush.com sc...@fybush.com To: Rick Dau drummer1965...@yahoo.com; a...@nrcdxas.org Cc: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com; a...@yahoogroups.com a...@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, July 14, 2012 5:07 PM Subject: [ABDX] Re: [NRC-AM] Trying to solve unIDs on 540 from January 1993 Looking for anyone living in Central or Eastern Time Zones who might've had a tape recorder rolling during the DX test of KNAK-540 in Utah in January 1993 (sorry, can't remember the exact date). I never got the test from KNAK, but I heard two unIDs on 540 that morning that have bedeviled me for years. One was playing classical music (Note: AFTER CBK's s/off!) and the other had a rock (or oldies) format with Brother Louie by the Stories, Whipping Post by The Allman Brothers, and Wild Thing by the Troggs. The 540 was almost certainly one of Saul Levine's southern California/Tijuana pair. It appears the Tijuana 540 didn't become classical XEBACH until 1998 or thereabouts, so we can probably narrow this down to the now-defunct KKGO 540 Costa Mesa (which wasn't really in Costa Mesa, but 90 miles away in Hesperia.) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Yep, they're (at least!) 10kW and very directional, putting tons of signal up the California coast and not nearly so much to the east (though they are still widely heard). Re: [IRCA] Short check of the AM Band
Unfortunately the Mexican data is really bad (lots of stations on the wrong frequency) and could lead to bad allocation decisions. On the plus side, it does allow us to spot which DXers are list-logging. More than one DXer has made the embarrassing mistake of logging a fictitious station like XENVA2 which only exists in these highly inaccurate government databases. The FCC should contract the whole thing out to Fred Cantu if they want to get it right - probably save some money too ;) 73 Tim Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -Original Message- From: Scott Fybush [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 03 Apr 2008 18:20:22 To:[EMAIL PROTECTED], Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: Re: [IRCA] Short check of the AM Band [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Some years ago I tried to do this with the erroneous Mexican entries in the FCC database. Because the foreign entries in the CDBS database are there specifically for international coordination by US licensees, they pretty much have to be updated only by those governments. The data does get updated occasionally - for the longest time, the entry for CKOC 1150 Hamilton in the FCC data was under CKMO, for the short-lived callsign the station had been using the last time its record was updated, in 1992. At some point in the last year or two, the correct calls started showing again. My guess is that someone got confused about the 1150 Hamilton record and the record for the current holder of the CKMO calls, 900 in Victoria, and a call was made from Washington to Ottawa to straighten things out. s ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] XE?? 1390 Mexico
If it was in the evening my local XEKT would be a good possibility. Licensed for 5kw if I recall correctly and most so-called Tecate stations are cheaters IMHO... Of course there are US stations in Spanish that are in networks which also have XE affiliates so maybe you can't necessarily rule out domestics... 73. Tim Hall. Re: [IRCA] Imaginery Mexican 0n 1440 Khz last night......
I checked my slightly-out-of-date database last night and didn't find any matches. It's a good point, though - there have been several US stations running a format with this name. These stations often seem to be night power challenged and not ID often. On the other hand, judging by the DX test results and other catches to date, you guys in the north are having a huge DX season compared to my neck of the woods so it could well be the XE after all 73 Tim Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -Original Message- From: Robert Ross [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2008 19:46:04 To:Mailing list for the International Radio Club of Americairca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: [IRCA] Imaginery Mexican 0n 1440 Khz last night.. Catching a Mexican on a regional channel like 1440 from the Northeast is unlikely, to say the least. Also, the Guadalajara station is not XECCC, it's XEABCJ, and they are a relay of XEABC-760 (ABC Radio, with a news/talk/sports format). I'd look for US stations on 1440 that might carry a Mexican programming format... WCDL, perhaps? Barry Barry...No problem on the Skepticism.I'm a skeptic too.and try not to believe everything people tell me!! Regarding your comments above...here's my reply.. Catching a Mexican on a regional channel like 1440 from the Northeast is unlikely, to say the least. I agree...but not impossible. To back this up..I must say that in the last 25 Days.I have heard a PILE of Stations on the Sony SRF-59and now the Sony SRF-T615 Ultralitesthat I too would not have believed until I heard them with my own ears. I have heard over 25 New Stations since I began using these 2 handhelds.these are stations I have never heard on My Drake R8B, NRD-535D, Collins 651S1, Collins HF-2050, Collins R-390A, and Hammarlund SP-600 in over 30 years of AM BCB DX'ing. I don't understand it...and I too am scratching my head trying to figure out how a Single AA Battery can pull this stuff in It don't make any senseand I can't explain itIt just is!!! Also, the Guadalajara station is not XECCC, it's XEABCJ, and they are a relay of XEABC-760 (ABC Radio, with a news/talk/sports format). Well.I didn't have any up to date Printed References available at the time...so I checked on the Internet for Fiesta Mexicana on 1440 KHZ. Everything that came up for that was XECCC Fiesta Mexicana in Guadalajara.so that is all I had to work with. The Station ID's heardand several of them were quite Clear...were Fiesta Mexicana At the same time I was hearing this station..I was also hearing the Mexican on 730 XEXand the Mexican on 540 XEWA. There were a few other frequencies which I suspected were Mexicans as wellbut couldn't dig the stations out from the QRM well enough to Identify. Sowith that said..It wasn't just the 1440 Station I heard...but several others from Mexico as well.what that proves is Nothing I guessbut it does support the 1440 reception if nothing else??? I'd look for US stations on 1440 that might carry a Mexican programming format... WCDL, perhaps? Welll...everything I can find on the net shows WCDL as a 5000 Watt DAYTIME ONLY STNare they on ALL NIGHT now??? Being a skeptic like you Barry...I listened to this station for OVER 1 1/2 Hoursbecause I figured eventually I was gonna hear an ENGLISH ID for an AMERICAN STN.or I was gonna hear an AD for an AMERICAN BUSINESSor mention of a USA CITYor something that would confirm that this was not MEXICO I was hearing.I truly believed for most of this reception...that It couldn't be Mexico!! But after listening for all that time..the ONLY thing I could confirm was that the station was ID'ing as Fiesta Mexicanaand didn't give ANY CLUE as to being located anywhere but Mexico. So with that Ammo.I tried to find out on the net what I had heard...and the only reference for Fiesta Mexicana on 1440 Khz was XECCC in Guadalajara. So in closing. Can I prove it was Guadalajara Mexico ID'ing as Fiesta Mexicana.I guess not. But I sure as heck haven't got anything else to put it anywhere else at this point. If there is anyone out there that knows of a USA Station on 1440 Khzthat ID's as Fiesta Mexicana..and Never mentions anything about the City they are located
