---BeginMessage--- Yes, they have pdfs on their e-dxn website of most seasons of DX News from the past 80 years. The 1933-1934 issues and the first three of the 1934-1935 season are not known to exist, but the remaining 1934-1935s, 1935-1970 and 1986-now are all up. September 1970 through September 1986 are works in progress. ---BeginMessage--- Besides all the great DX we used to enjoy, it should also be mentioned that reading about the actual DXers of yesteryear should also be quite enlightening. There are quite a few names whose legend has lived on - long after they have either passed away or left the hobby. I got into IRCA sometime in the mid '70s, a couple of years after I'd joined NRC, even though my actual DXing goes back to 1960 (age 10-11). My early days of DXing autobiography is still online at ' http://www.qsl.net/wa1ion/wa1ion_history.htm '. One thing I miss is all the Latin Americans that were on 5 kHz and other splits. Suriname 725 was the ten-ton gorilla here in coastal MA, but there were many more from South American, Central American, and Caribbean countries that are now impossible to hear (= no more AM) or nearly impossible (few stations, low power, heavy US/Cuba/Canada QRM). To keep down the clutter, I'll refrain from having everyone else's chatter appended to the bottom of my message. Mark, I remember Surinam 725. They were pretty regular running 50 KW, if I remember correctly. Back in the day, when YNX 750 was strong. Latins are few and far between here in the NW. There are a few exceptions like Cuba on 530 640. Re: [IRCA] IRCA DX Monitor on DVD Wonderful!!!!
Through the years, we tend to forget about a lot of DX we had gotten in the past. With these DVD's, the catches are in digital print forever. Many of us (me included), no longer has every issue and trying to buy up sets at auctions and the like, it is not an easy task, if you can even do it. Plus all of the room needed to hold years of bulletins. So having from 1964-2011 on two DVD's is really nice. I found myself this afternoon, losing myself in the DVDs for several hours. I miss the frequency checks, Proof-of-Performance tests and Equipment Tests. Heard many new stations that way and have some nice QSLs from some of them. Great to see renewed interest in this. Lee Freshwater did the scanning over five years ago, a huge task for which he should be thanked. A pity that the DVDs fell off the map in the ensuing years, but they were publicized back then; that's when I got my copy. The DXMs are searchable as well from Volume 28 onwards, so quite a gem. best wishes, Nick There seems to be no mention of this at http://ircaonline.org/bookst.htm . The f/c's were great. I nabbed a lot of great DX, especially distant GYers. However, with them running all 1 KW fulltime, the distance you can hear them probably would not be as good. Unfortunately, CE's have to handle a series of stations in most cases, not one AM, or maybe an AM FM combo. So they just do not have the time or energy to do tests like they once did. CE's today, as most everyone are not letter writers either. Add up everything else, I am surprised we ever get a QSL back. The KREL 1580 QSL was a surprise. Like in the case of WSPO, the clubs are answering the QSL's. That has happened a lot in the past several years. But we are lucky we get the tests we do. I would hate to try and re-QSL the stations I have. Of course that would be totally impossible anyway, as so many are long gone. Re: [IRCA] IRCA DX Monitor on DVD Wonderful!!!!
See Phil...you mention it and the orders are lining up...hi. But in all seriousness the collection of the DX Monitors from the beginning is priceless. You cannot put a price of great memories. I have been at the dials for 52 years and it has been one amazing 5+ decades. To top to off...let's see...two things come to mind, the 9 kHz plan in 1978 that gave us the chance to log many many catches from countries we would have never had a chance to hear. I remember reading back in the 70s, the easiest countries to log on MW. India was considered nearly impossible at that time. Indians then, most were low power on MW and on the 10 kHz plan, but still we DXers proved that to be wrong after they moved to 9 kHz. I still remember well logging that UNID on 864 and one of John Bryant's student's understook the language and that got a report out and that QSL from Shillong in NE India. Of course in the article countries like Bangladesh or Nepal were not even considered. Then of course the X Band. I first time I had logged New Jersey other than a NYC transmitter site, not one NJ but two on the X Band. It was fun while that lasted. Going back and re-reading that catches that everyone heard at the time is a lot of fun. A pity that the DVDs fell off the map in the ensuing years, but they were publicized back then; that's when I got my copy.. The DXMs are searchable as well from Volume 28 onwards, so quite a gem. best wishes, Nick There seems to be no mention of this at http://ircaonline.org/bookst.htm . Mike, Too bad you weren't around in the late 60s/early 70s as 1400 kHz was wide open mm's. The nearing station on MM's was Mansfield Ohio! One DXer in Seattle logged NJ on 1400! I got the WNUE 1400 Ft. Walton Beach DX Test in 1971. A bit later, 1400 from NV decided to stay on MM's and that was the beginning of the end. Bill Block and I were recently talking about that. I sure wish I would have had this beverage back then. Re: [IRCA] IRCA DX Monitor on DVD Wonderful!!!!
I STILL have two tube-powered consoles plus a tube-powered R388A. They still work fine! They started even before Ernie Cooper. In fact one of my electronic instructors at Clatsop College was a DXer in the 20s. He heard all 88 stations ( I think) in a few months. This was in the mid to late 1920's I believe he told me. Even the DX in the 1960s is a whole different world. I think the DXM DVD deserves a full page ad with details in an upcoming issue. I should post something about it on the IRCA Facebook page as well. However I did not know they were available until I talked to Phil in Billings. They really weren't as it took a couple of months to get my set. I wonder if the NRC has anything like this? Going back to the 30s, would be interesting. But you can contact Phil directly. But it is sure nice way to have the history on DVD. It is by volume and then after I clicked on a volume, then all of the issues for that volume comes up and a particular issue you can click on and the whole issue is there. The 60s and 70s are especially fun to read the zillions of f/c and DX tests. The loggings coast to coast. Fun stuff. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin Seaside OR KGED QSL Manager From: charle...@msn.com To: irca@hard-core-dx.com Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2014 23:45:05 + Subject: Re: [IRCA] IRCA DX Monitor on DVD Wonderful There seems to be no mention of this at http://ircaonline.org/bookst.htm .. Wow! What a walk down memory lane. I had lost a lot of bulletins through the years with moves and all, plus I did not join the IRCA until 1968, so I missed out on the first 4 years. What a change in DXing through the years. As each year goes by, it is just a little slice of time, but when it all adds up and I go back to 1964, radio was in a different World. AM was it. FM was not popular and in many cases, few people listened to it. AM's supported the FM's. Chief Engineers were from the old school of knowing was a QSL was and the percentage of QSL's a DXer got back on their first try was nearly 100%. I know in the mid 60s, I rarely had to send out a follow up. Even when I did, the reply came through then, with rarely any hold outs. DX, Coast to Coast was the norm. I see Larry Godwin reporting WTIC, a easy catch from the West on Monday mornings..Ah, Monday Mornings...few DXers were not up all night or m os t of t he night in those days. I remember hearing 5 KWers from the East on many frequencies. 970 had a mix of FL and TN for me, WFLA and WAVE. I am sure pleased with the DVD set (2). A very nice Christmas Gift for the DXer on your list you have no idea what to buy for. Thank you for all who had a part and getting this done for the club. So many names from the past. This made my day. Thank you Phil for all you have done and continue to do for our club. Again my prayers are with you, Sherry, and your family.
