I have used Audacity on the PC and the Mac. You must

Nick, you are spot-on about Audacity. I use it on Mac, Windows and Linux.
It's free, and it certainly does have the ability to slow down recorded
audio. It's replaced Cool Edit on my Windows machine as the primary software
for manipulating recorded files (although I agree with Russ that Total
Recorder is the best *recording* software).

Goldwave also has it; I suspect it's fairly standard on audio editing programs.

I haven't used Audacity particularly, but they mention under "effects" that it
can "Change the pitch without altering the tempo, or vice-versa."

This is free (open source), and is also available for Mac OS X, so may fill
your needs, Pete. I believe Colin Newell uses this program, so may have more
to say about it. It can also be used as a recorder.

Cool Edit has the slow-down feature. I record exclusively with Total
Recorder. I've seen nothing that beats its flexibility, and the price
is excellent. I use Power Audio Editor for playback. I started using it
for FM DX so that I could see meteor scatter hits and E-skip peaks on
the graphic display ( Cool Edit does this also but isn't as easy to
operate and also takes a lot longer to load a file ). I use Cool Edit
when I need to work over unID's whether to slow them down or filter
them or both.

Better re-check their website: to buy a licensed copy of Goldwave will cost
you $50 Canadian (about $45 US they say). They do have a free demo.

A highly regarded totally free recording & editing package that's simple to
use is Audacity which you can find at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ . It
has quite a following these days, and supports the PC, Mac and Linux.

*** Your PC has a sound card. That sound card is mounted inside the
back of the PC. It will have some receptacles on it, fairly close
together, usually in a line. At minimum it should have 'line input'
which is where you run a jack from the receiver audio output; a 'mic
input' and an output for phones. They should be marked with icons which
should be reasonably intuitive.

The line input wants to see relatively high impedance, and your
receiver probably has a low impedance audio output. Some have both high
and low. I deal with that issue by taking a small audio transformer on
the order of 8 ohms to some value between 1000 and 10,000 ohms to step
it up from the receiver to the PC.

The whatever recording software is used may need to be configured to
take input from the sound card. If you're recording to mp3, depending
on the software, you'll need a record codec. Even if you don't use
Total Recorder, their website ( www.highcriteria.com ) has some good
info and links explaining some of the ins and outs of that aspect.
