[IRCA] WGBW?

2011-10-22 Thread Jim Renfrew

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

A real mess on 1590, with WASB causing havoc at 1589.9, and WAKR the other
station. At 0111 EDT I heard polka accordion music, which doesn't fit WASB
or WAKR. Anyone else hear the accordion?

"Mexican Polka" here, same general bearing as WGBW from here. WNTS maybe?

Logged some classic rock and a "jingle ID" but couldn't make it out in

[IRCA] WGBW Test

2011-10-23 Thread Patrick Martin
In listening back to the complete hour of the test, I found there was
really only 1 time I caught Morse code at 0005. The other times I
thought there was some was either flute music or just tones of different
types. Maybe that flute music was the test too.
I am really pleased with this as the last WGBW test that was run, I
only had slight tentative, but cx were not as good as tonight either.
The beverage does well when cx are good. Thank you Saul for setting up
the test, and Mark for running it. Fantastic!

[IRCA] WGBW Test

2011-10-23 Thread Barry McLarnon
Just getting to my overnight recordings now...

WGBW was heard well with a voice announcement at 0100 EDT, followed by bugle
call, calliope music, and various other strange music (including the Mickey
Mouse theme). A very slow Morse ID that sounded sent by hand started at
0105:30. The test seemed to continue beyond 0200, with the same sequence
repeating then. A relog, but it's always fun to hear a DX test.

The surprising thing was that I also heard WGBW at 0805 EDT, well past
sunrise here, with a formal sign-on announcement.

[IRCA] WGBW DX test

2011-10-23 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

Listening last night while the test was on, 1590 was, as usual, one big jumble
of noise. Only IDs I heard at the time were for KBND and KFLE. So I quit
listening live as I knew, sooner or later, people would report hearing IDs and
TTs at certain times. And they did.

Armed with a list of what was heard at what time I went back over the recording
this morning and sure enough all the morse IDs and TTs were there, along with
flute music. Only thing missing were the voice IDs. Surprisingly, all this was
heard on my EWE as somehow I had forgotten to switch over to my E/W beverage.

Many thanks to all those responsible for making this happen.

I sat on 1590 from 0005 to 0150 CLT and didn't hear a trace.  WGBW's day
pattern, as has been alluded to already here, has a deep null almost straight

surmise as to why they came in with a decent signal during the test on
10/16/2010 is that conditions to the northeast must have been favorable that
night.

I'm pretty sure what they're saying is actually "Denmark-Green Bay." The
relocation from Two Rivers up to Denmark was designed to give WGBW a
city-grade daytime signal over Green Bay, which is by far the largest
community in that corner of northeast Wisconsin.

talking about the future of Libya and US involvement. Very strong. No sign
of any DX test tones, etc.Walt

[IRCA] WGBW-1590 DX test

2011-10-22 Thread Steve Francis

At 2:06 EDT, after more than an hour of tantalizing sporadic and super-weak
clarinet music, Pied Piper music and brief test tones, a tone ended, followed
by a voice ID. Weak but readable. Heard only once before, on 8-8-75, signing
off at sunset.

Calliope music and another brief tone at 2:17.

[IRCA] WGBW 1590 DX TEST

2010-10-15 Thread amdxer

WGBW 1590 DX test heard with bugle calls noted several times, at
00:10, 00:33 and 00:50 and brief 10 second or so steady tone
repeated several times.  Will have to dig through recording to
identify music and possible ID's.

Using R8A and Quantum

[IRCA] WGBW DX Test - QSL

2010-10-23 Thread amdxer

Received Verification Letter in mail today for WGBW 1590 DX test
last Satudray.  This is a short turn around time, mailed
my report with CD on Tuesday, reply back on Saturday!

In
my reception report I mentioned hearing a "dog barking "
type sound, perhaps a Disney song or some type of sound effect at
00:04CDT.  Mark Heller said this was not part of his test and
that someone else also reported hearing similar "dog
barking" sounds at the same time.  All my other details
for ID, bugle songs and the test tones matched.

Thanks to
all who helped with this DX Test.

[IRCA] WGBW Test (10-11p PDT): Should I try? Which radio 2 use?

2011-10-22 Thread Stephen Airy
Hi all, regarding the WGBW test...

I'm about 2834.46 km from them at a bearing of 253.47°.  According to their
daytime pattern data, they have a standard field of 76.96 mV/m @ 1 km.  (Their
IDF for 10kW is 1098.7 mV/m; calculations indicate they radiate approximately
49 watts in my direction.)
My main nighttime pest is 1580 KMIK Tempe, AZ, whose IBOC-spewing jammer blasts
me from 482.23 km at a bearing toward me of 262.18°.  Their field toward me is
approximately 2875 mV/m @ 1 km.  (IDF is 2026.04 mV/m; calculations indicating
their ERP toward me is about 100 kW.)
On many occasions at night, KMIK has been about as strong as 600 KOGO @ 8 miles
on its 5kW pattern, 910 KECR @ 9 miles on its 5kW day pattern, 1170 KCBQ @ 9
miles on its 2.9kW night pattern and 1360 KLSD @ 8 miles on its 1kW night
operations.

I'm also wondering which radio should I use?  Should I use the Tecsun PL-606
with its narrow DSP filtering?  Or, should I use the GE Superradio III with its
longer ferrite bar?  In either case, I do have a Select-A-Tenna available,
which I expect to use as well.

Do I have any reasonable chance of hearing them here?

[IRCA] WGBW Test (10-11p PDT): Tried with PL-606 + SAT, not sure?

2011-10-23 Thread Stephen Airy
Ok, I tried for them using my PL-606 + SAT.  I recorded what I heard and split
the recording into 10-minute segments (about 3 MB each; the last one is a
little over 10 minutes).

http://www.mediafire.com/?50jurbna2b2l0

Timestamps at the beginning of each recording are in the file names.  Does
anyone hear any hint of the test in any of the recordings?  Or did I not have
any chance with WGBW sending 49 watts at me from about 1760 miles away and 1580
KMIK blasting at least 100+ kW with its IBOC from 300 miles away only a few
degrees off heading?

Offhand I'd say your best bet would be the PL-606 with the
Select-a-tenna. The DSP might filter out the IBOC crud.

Good chance, probably not, some chance, always.

I'm using a DX-440 and homebrew variable geometry active ferrite. (Don't
know how else to describe it) The 440 is not known fro it's MW
performance and I'm still not quite satisfied with the antenna but I'm
working on it. A lot of fading in and out on 1590 tonight so if they're
running CW I might catch it even though I'm in the daytime null

[IRCA] WGBW AM -1590, Two Rivers, WI PLANNED TEST OCT. 16th at MIDNIGHT CENTRAL

2010-10-06 Thread Saul DX
I have an e-mail into the station contact, and am trying to clarify a few
details. For instance, I presume they mean the midnight leading into Oct 16.
But I've learned never to presume things. Some other details, too. Soon as I
know, you'll all know. Sorry about the relatively late notice. But this came
in unexpectedly, and we'll take what we can get.

Great news! If it happens, it will be wonderful. I have a local on
1590 (Beech Grove) but I can null them and the best open direction is
NW/SE, so it could make it! I know times are tough for stations but
with a possible test so early in the year, it sounds encouraging for

I have an e-mail into the station contact, and am trying to clarify a
few
details. For instance, I presume they mean the midnight leading into Oct
16.
But I've learned never to presume things. Some other details, too. Soon
as I
know, you'll all know. Sorry about the relatively late notice. But this
came
in unexpectedly, and we'll take what we can get.

Mark Heller is definately a radio guy... he is the owner of WGBW and he's
also an engineer.. a very intelligent engineer.

2010-10-07 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Thanks John and Paul;

Too bad that there are not more radio guys, in radio. Sad but true -
there isn't a lot of folks like Mr. Heller. Please John, pass along my
thanks. Hopefully the 10 Kw will run a test, too.
