Re: [IRCA] What's the best Receiver and Antenna?
I wasn't going to answer this, since it is truly a Fools Question, IMHO. However, when my good friend Nick H-P mentioned the IRCA Reprint and then updated it by mentioning the E1, which I own and the R-75, which I've used, I just had to drop my oar in the water. You might ask yourself why Guy Atkins, who owns both an e-1 and an R-75 and ,I who owned a Tentec RX-340 until two weeks ago, have both been using (almost exclusively) SDR Radios for the past year in Guy's case, a FlexRadio SDR-1000; in my case, a WinRadio 313e. Guy has also owned both a 7030 and an R8B in recent years. At the recent IRCA Convention, we jointly presented these two stunning receivers and allowed as how we cannot imagine ever going back to traditional receivers. If ya want the unqualified best DX receiver, at any price, you cannot leave out these two medium-priced wonders. John B. Re: [IRCA] What's the best Receiver and Antenna?
Bruce, The half of the year that I DX in Washington state, My antennas are 20 unobstructed sea miles or less from all of the Vancouver 50 kw flamethrowers. Using a 100 x 20 KAZ antenna, I had no problems at all. With a 65' x 100' EWE pointed nearly at the Vancouver stations this summer, I had overloads, primarily from 650 CISL (over S-9+50 dB.) The 313 has an 18 db attenuator that totally solved that and still allowed very weak DX through. I don't think that the 303 has the attenuator. John B. Hi All, So Nick, your going to make me work for these answers. hi. Thanks for posting that resource, I appreciate it. Actually, I'm just looking for opinions, but to narrow the question down. How about just receivers that are currently produced. Personally I'm not in the market for a new receiver and hope my Drake will last 20+ years like my Yaesu did. 73's - Doug ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] What's the best Receiver and Antenna?
For a medium budget..your R8B and Kiwa loop answers that question. For a smaller budget..I'd use a R75 and a Quantum loop (noting the Quantum is almost as good as the Kiwa from my tests) For a larger budget..what rx is truly superior to the R8A/B or AOR7030+ ? I slightly prefer my AOR to my Drakes, but only very very slightly. Perhaps a IC 756 Pro III with MW pad removed ? From the demos at the convention, perhaps the top of the line computer controlled sets. ( I DX from my car in fields at my homes and I barely know how to turn a computer on, so those aren't for me at this moment) For antennas on a larger budget.. Phased Beverages with enough land (set up and wire is cheap..land ISN'T), and if less land, and nice flat dry land, Phased BOGs. For normal high budget large suburban lots of 1 acre or so. A K9AY phaseable vs a couple switch selectable mini-BOGs would allow the K9AY's switchable cardiod pattern to be phase enhanced to null pests off one side of the cardiod or to deepen the back null to at least 50 dB which will get rid of anything less than a 50 KW superlocal. If interest in just one general direction, a fixed cardiod antenna like a KAZ,Flag, Pennant, EWE, phased vs a couple of mini-BOGs works great. 73 KAZ - Original Message - From: Doug Pifer-desert4wd.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Sunday, November 26, 2006 9:38 AM Subject: [IRCA] What's the best Receiver and Antenna? Re: [IRCA] What's the best Receiver and Antenna?
I think the best answer was yours, depends on what he's looking for. The receiver that you use, the Drake R8 etc. seems to be the receiver of choice for many serious MW DX'ers. I prefer to have something I can work on, tune up etc. so I use boatanchors, some of which are: R-390-A which is probably as good as the best of today, Hammarlund HQ-180, National HRO-60 and Hammarlund SP-600 all of which give a very good accounting of themselves in the medium wave bands. I believe the state of the art in antennas today are 2 LW's (best of which is a beverage if you have the space) and other outside antennas such as the pennant etc. and and very importantly a phaser with the outside antennas especially the LW's. I think there is a lot of bang for the buck in the old Hammarlunds especially if you are on a limited budget, HQ129,s 140's and 150's (rare and more expensive) are all good radios and usually can be had for less than three hundred bucks which won't buy a lot of radio brand new nowadays. Doug, A Drake R8/A/B and a KIWA Loop, for someone that did not want to mess with outside antennas. Of course the Drake R8/A/B is no longer made as well as the KIWA loop, but there is still a lot of used ones around. For a new set up maybe the R75 and a Quantum Loop. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KAVT Reception Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Howdy, I appreciate everyones input on this and the variety of suggestions. I don't think my brother has ever been into SWL'ing and as a matter of fact, he's the one that got me into DX'ing the BCB, before we really knew what it was called. Re: [IRCA] What's the best Receiver and Antenna?
Doesn't it depend upon your goals? I mean, if you're parked on the domestic channels, it doesn't take much of a receiver to be happy ... success boils down to directional antennas. If you're chasing the EU/TP split channels, then it comes down to receiver design. Except for you boys on the coasts ... you've got it easy. :^] John K9RZZ Milwaukee ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
