2019-01-01 Thread Tim Tromp
Thanks, Tim.

I've noted the carrier here before but this is the first time that any
audio has ever come through. The carrier was stronger than usual so I
decided to stick with it for a while, just in case. Patience paid off!

Happy New Year,

Re: [IRCA] 1710 oldies

2018-02-21 Thread Brett Saylor
Dave Valko and I were listening last night and heard them sign off at
7:05pm EST with this singing ID. We're debating if the frequency is "1510"
or "1710" and neither of us can make out what comes after the frequency and
before "radio" - a call? a slogan? It hasn't snapped into focus for me yet:

http://personal.psu.edu/bds2/audio/2018-02-21%20%20PIRATE%20(NA)%20%201710%20%26%20ID%20jingle%20%20(Delta%20Loop).mp3

Anyone else have an idea?

That oldies station on 1710 was heard here in central PA yesterday between
6-7pm EST. Signed off with a singing jingle at 7:05pm. Best on the
south-pointed loop, but I'm not convinced that it's actually in that
direction - it could be that loop rejects the QRM from the Hudson NJ TIS
better. Also heard at the same time on a Wash DC-area SDR with equal or
better signals. Long fades on both radios.

I've heard reports of it being heard well on a western-PA SDR too.

Re: [IRCA] 1710 mystery station

2018-02-09 Thread Stan Horzepa

Hi Les,

In the past as today, this station plays music most of the time and
seldom has any voice. Also, the station is as weak as my Spanish, so I
might miss an ID even if they gave one.

so no station identification. Station was stronger on my vertical antenna as
compared to my 80-meter inverted Vee. At times, the Hudson County (NJ) TIS
competed with the Spanish music station on both antennas. And as soon as power
was restored, the station disappeared into the noise.

I have heard this station occasionally at dusk, but have had no luck
identifying it.

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks, Russ.

I listened to the recording again and noticed that the second song I
heard was actually in English -- sounded like Aretha Franklin. And the
first song was probably in Spanish as I recognized a couple of words per
my two years of high school Spanish in the previous century.

Re: [IRCA] 1710 yesterday heard in Scotland

2014-02-01 Thread Albert Muick

Hello Ken,

The station was WQFG689 and is the only Emergency Radio Service
authorized on 1710 in the USA. It runs 10 watts from Jersey City, NJ.
It was started during Hurricane Katrina and continues because the
recovery effort continues. You'll hear a lot of Homeland Security PSAs
on the station.

For a QSL, contact:
James Woods, Coordinator of Emergency Management
County of Hudson (WQFG689)
555 County Avenue, Bldg. 11
Secaucus, NJ 07094
USA

My initial letter went unanswered until I followed up with a fax to the
number listed in the FCC database: +1 201 369 5204. Mr. Woods explained
that he was still very busy with the cleanup from the hurricane.

The other station you possibly heard there may have been Radio
Celestial, a NYC church pirate. They were recently busted and fined.
Their signal was quite wide-ranging and they had pictures of it on their
website, which now appears to be streaming only, unless they have
continued transmissions. I have not monitored recently.

The website address is www.smjrc.com. If you hear it again, you can
compare against their webstream.

Congrats on some amazing DX!!

I hear them at my QTH about 45 miles north of NYC.
Some QSB as they flutter in and out of the other melee on this frequency.
This sounds like the same station I heard on the night of December 1.

I'm using a Sony ICF-SW7600GR bare back, so they must be getting out pretty
well.

Pirate Radio Boston being heard here at 0230 UTC.  Poor to fair

splatter.  Music and banter between two announcers, reading reception
reports sent in from various DXers, seems to be the same holiday program

Re: [IRCA] 1710 KHz TiS Station

2012-02-20 Thread neilkaz
I'll be in WI in early March and will try to bag that there. Perhaps I can get
this from IL, but the powerlines east of me are extremely noisy since huge
T-storms this summer so I have no antenna aimed that way now, but that doesn't
mean that I can't put down a or reverse the feed and termination on my westerly
Double KAZ antenna to aim east although I expect too much noise.

This TIS has been a nightly visitor here since it was first reported the
other night. It comes in at the same level as the Radio Celestial pirate.
So the question remains, is this a new TIS station or did something change
allowing it to be widely heard? I frequently monitor 1710 and haven't

I'm still wondering why this station is being suddenly so
well heard. Since it's continued for several nights now, we
 can rule out propagation
events. TIS transmitters don't have a provision to allow
cheating by increasing the power. So I'm wondering if they
just came on the air, or
relocated one of the transmitters to a new location?

Still nothing here on 1710 KHz, but I continue to check. If
I could get day off from work, I might install the Wellbrook
loop away from the hash of the
 house and improve my odds.

I'm quite sure I would've noticed them before as well, so I suspect it's a
new transmitter that just came on the air (or was moved to a new location)
this past week. Whether the other four transmitters listed on their license
are also on the air is anybody's guess.

I couldn't find an email address, but if anyone feels like calling to find
out more, this appears to be the appropriate person to contact:

I heard NWS type info on 1710 on my drive home from Burnt River ON to Toronto

the same NWS alert as one on - I think - 1630 - mentions of Execution Rocks,
Monmouth came through loud enough to discern even on my car radio. Saul

A little late to the game, but thanks to Saul Chernos's DX tip, I camped on
1710 for awhile late last night. Spanish pirate dominated, but there were
two or three others under, including what sounded like a TIS/HAR
simulcasting an NWS weather broadcast. It faded in and out and sounded it
had a network echo. No positive ID though, just the weather with mentions
 of New York harbor.

I tuned to 1710 and only heard a lot of noise plus a weak pirate playing

huge, when, lo and behold, a signal rose up out of the noise with talk about
amber alerts, various PSAs, and WQFG689 ID - and they really were huge for a
few minutes. Thanks for the tip!

BTW, I measured the TIS carrier frequency to be 1710.0032.

slick jingles, parady oldie songs, old nostalgic clips of WLS, WABC and
WINS (from when they played music) with lots of old commercial ads tossed

Noted today, around 1500UTC another and this time an illegal Hmong station with
Pt. 15 type power on 1710. Just a little background, St. Paul is rich in the
Hmong community and have operated a Pt. 15 station on most of the x-band
frequencies. Sometimes they operated 3-4 stations at a time in different parts
of St. Paul. This in addition to semi-local 1600 and newly acquired 690 within

No, seriously.. I'm asking.. you contradicted yourself there.

if they're Part 15, it's legal.

if they are running multiple Part 15 transmitters slaved together at one
location or multiple transmitters synched together across different
locations, that's legal.

Part 15 AM deals with individual power of each transmitter, not multiple
transmitters together.

2011-08-22 Thread Dennis Vroom

Patrick,

My mistake, the signal was heard on the NW long-wire, not the SW ewe.
On the antenna switch I had the coax mixed.  Just corrected the mistake.
I now have four antennas.  Just added the Kiwa loop.  Tonight the only
antenna that can get any audio from 1710 is the NW long-wire and the signal
is only S-2.   The palstar tuner helps when in the tune mode.  Surprised their
still on the air, the Vancouver, WA 1710 Russian station got shut down a few
months after being on the air by the FCC.  I read that the FCC field station in
Portland, OR
keeps it's radio direction finding vehicle in Vancouver, WA.

Thanks Dennis. Yes, the Russian is a regular visitor here nightly.
Depending on Northerly cx, the signal strength does vary. The best
signal is off the NE EWE, aimed pretty much at the Puget Sound. I even
get the Russian station carrier durng the day! Rarely any audio though,
except maybe in mid Winter. You might try for the Fort Lewis TIS in the
morning after LSR on 1500. They are also common after CA fades out.

Re: [IRCA] 1710 khz The Big Q up now at 1100 UTC

2011-03-25 Thread Tim Tromp
For anyone keeping tabs on this station, I heard them again briefly this
morning, this time on the car radio during my one-hour commute to work on
I-96. First noted about 1124 UTC tune-in with oldies, vintage Remco radio
kit ad, Chickenman at 1130 UTC, and then off (or faded) by 1135 UTC. This
was on 1710 khz, local sunrise, signal was poor mainly due to adjacent slop
from 1700 khz.

I heard The Big Q from Minneapolis on Jan.2. It was MUCH weaker than
Tim's report from Michigan. I was using a 40m dipole and switching
between my Icom 706 and a Icom IC-PRC100. Most of the time, I could not
make out any lyrics, or clear announcer speech.
In the past, its been heard in London, Ontario and western Michigan.
Since it was strong in Michigan and so weak in Minneapolis, it must be
to the E or NE of Tim in Michigan?
I just got a LD-1B SDR from Lazy Dog Engineering. Next time The Big Q
comes on, I hope to SEE the signal peaks on my pc screen. :)

Just spent 45 minutes listening to the 1710 pirate, no sign of ident,
finally stopped recording--time for bed. Signal has little fading but not a
great signal, maybe 80-90% understanding it. Mostly plays 60's oldies with
occasional very short voice into the next song. Occasional humorous ads,
possibly old original ads. One that played several times about buying a GE
Superradio on eBay (since it's no longer being made) since that radio is
good for superior AM reception. Another humorous ad about a lady with very
large feet who needs to find mens's brown loafers in size 11 to fit her
feet.
Maybe eventually someone else will hear this and can give some more input
about where it might come from. Mid west or west coast, since little fading
on the signal? Best on my E/W longwire.

Hi Guy,

As I recall, when the 1710 Russian was first discovered (and many of us
were investigating the bearing), you and I both came up with a 1710 spurious
signal (apparently a mix of 710-KIRO and 1000-KOMO) that nulled toward
Vashon Island. This made it difficult for us to dig out the real 1710-Russian
signal, which came from true north (not from around 300 degrees, like the
spur). There were only a few times that I could hear the real 1710-Russian
signal weakly, and that was around local midnight on the 9' loop (in the back

2010-12-06 Thread Guy Atkins
Thanks Pat (and Chuck Tom also) for your comments. Now I'm really puzzled
at the station's absence here! I didn't tune ECSS to check for a het, just
tuned past the frequency each time in AM mode. I was using my AOR receiver
rather than Perseus so I couldn't see any activity on a spectrum or
waterfall display.

I've been testing and comparing three 1-meter active loop antennas recently,
and the fact that they are all oriented with the nulls N-S may have
contributed to the absence of signal. That didn't occur to me earlier.

Back to 1710 kHz with Perseus and my usual 35 x 40 ft. broadband term. loop
with a forward lobe aimed north-northwest! I'll check it out tonight when I
get home.

Guy,

Even though my NE EWE is tiny (15X40X15), it still does well for the
Puget Sound stations. I just tried and the Russian on 1710 is going
strong (weak here tonight), with a woman in RR and RR music.

My two 1710 signals are occasionally the same level now; both sound similar

simulcasting; but presently two slow-talking men talking in presumably

Re: [IRCA] 1710 Russian Station

2010-12-06 Thread Guy Atkins
At 0530 utc tonight I tried for the Russian language station on 1710. Since
a number of folks have mentioned hearing it easily, I figured so should I.

Nope! *Barely* a scratchy het is heard, and Perseus shows just a 4 or 5 dB
S/N at the most. That's on the best of four antennas available, too! Very
odd.

Gary DeBock-- if you're reading this can you try 1710 and let us know if you
hear the station in your Puyallup valley location? It's not even close to
being in audio here.

2010-09-10 Thread vroomski

Walt,

About 6 months ago I track a Russian station on 1710 kHz to a neighborhood near
164 th street
in Vancouver. Very expensive homes in this neighborhood. Have not heard this
station
this summer in my visits to the area. It seems that the Seattle area Russian
station on
1710 is still transmitting? In the Portland, OR area we have a Resident agent
office while
Seattle has a District office.

2010-09-10 Thread vroomski

Patrick,

I paid $12.99 for the Talking House transmitter. The Goodwill store had 3 of
them.
When I plugged it into a ground-fault outlet, it tripped the breaker. It works
when pugged into a regular AC outlet. 4 ft wire for a antenna in our den,
I could hear it a house or two away on the Escape radio. On the bottom of the
transmitter it says that it complies with Part 15 of FCC rules of regulations.
Last time I visited the Goodwill store the other two were gone. One sold on
e-bay
last week for around $32.00.

Re: [IRCA] 1710 kHz Pirate Vancouver, WA

2010-02-26 Thread Pete Taylor
Good tracking, Dennis. What with the dishes, it is not impossible that it is
relaying the same program as the one we tracked down to the southern fringes of
Everett. I'm waiting for one to show up in Federal Way; every time I go to
Costco or Winco I invariably hear Russian being spoken.

No antennas were seen, only a few satellite dishes. Many huge pine trees
in the area. It reminded me of when some of us at the IRCA Flagstaff

the

lowered
and the closer we got to the transmitter site, the louder the audio got. The
volume control was set to six and the signal vanished within 1/8 of a mile

Paul,

Just being a radio listener and not a electrical engineer I would guess
with the power restrictions and antenna height restrictions of the fcc (part

this station is not compliment to FCC rules. Good signal 3/4 mile away and
heard
weakly 4 1/2 miles away.
