Re: [IRCA] DXpedition capture files?

2015-10-31 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Mark,

As some folks on this list know, I used to run a Perseus SDR blog for a
few years, and a Flexradio SDR-1000 for a few years before that. When I had
the "Five Below" Perseus blog, I included a "Perseus WAV Files Directory"
section that over time became quite popular.

At the time, the hosting service MediaFire appeared the best choice for me
(their reasonably priced "Pro" plan) so that's what I used as the Perseus
WAV file storage.

If I was beginning to share SDR recordings today, I would investigate
Microsoft's OneDrive and Google Drive. Last year OneDrive upped their file
size limit to 10 GB, and Google Drive offers a maxium of 5 TB (yes, that's
TB as in Terrabytes!). Both services allow easy sharing of files and
folders.

Chuck Hutton's "Perseus WAV Chopper" is an excellent utility for trimming
WAVs to just the pertinent time range of interest (60 seconds centered on
top-of-the-hour for instance). I wish something like Perseus WAV Chopper
was available for Elad-generated files! Then it wouldn't matter if a DXer
like myself was using 4096 MB as their file size for recording; the WAV
could still be trimmed down to something reasonable in size.

However, at least the current size limits of OneDrive and Google Drive
allow these more massive WAVs, but of course there's still the long,
l-o-n-g wait time for downloading the files that most DXers will encounter.

Guy Atkins

A TOH snip of about 2 minutes would run around 1 gig, so DroopBox is
practical if we adopted James' idea of a limited shelf-life there in the
attic. (If we were filling up I could warn people that specific files were
about to be deleted in 3 days or so...)

I am not the most technical bear in the woods but there has to be a service
that would fit our needs. I have Dropbox with 69 gigs and it doesn’t cost
anything. Granted that's not enough for a dozen or so to be sending 4 and 5
gig files all the time but I think they have something called Dropbox for
business at an added cost that would have all the capacity needed. If
anybody knows of other services, jump in and we can put them in the pot and
compare. Once we know of the best compromise of features and price we can
talk about how to deal with the cost and the administrative logistics.

I think a lot of us would contribute Perseus snips if they didn't have to
always be current.

Some form of pre-upload "vetting" might be a good thing, to minimize
congestion. It could take the following general form:

"I have TOH snips of MW taken at PM (AM) on a 140-ft Broadside D-Kaz
oriented 325 degrees from (QTH). Payload size___. Holler if you want
them"

The offered snips are uploaded only if someone asked for them. 'Admin'
keeps the list of offers and from time to time posts a reminder here that
such snips are available by request.

I'd be more than happy to be that 'Admin'...but first we need a storage
site.

Cheers!

A few days back I commented about possible availability of RF capture files
from recent DXpeditions, as in the days when Guy Atkins ran the "Five Below"
website.
I haven't seen any comments about this yet. Recent DXpeditions would
include Masset, Rockworks, and Grayland on the West Coast as well as any
East Coast activity such as the Miscou Island, NB outing (about which I have
read remarkably little so far).

Usually we're talking about Perseus files but, presumably with the
availability of HDSDR etc. generic software, other file formats such as
Elad, Excalibur, and Afedri could also be shared for everyone's enjoyment.

I would love to hear other DXers SDR recordings, I know Perseus is mentioned
here but don't forget the ELAD FDM S2 recording which I have as well as
others.
I think this would be a great idea, but I know storage on a server somewhere
will need storage capacity.

I think if the recordings were left on the server for perhaps a week or two
then removed to make room for other recordings would be a great idea, keep
them rotating so to speak.
Maybe also, have folders for Countries and the states or provinces under
them or recordings saved under the DXers name along with his/her location so
everyone will see clearly which location the recordings were made.
Plus, it does not have to be just DXpeditions, some DXers have a great home
location.

Just my 2 cents

Re: [IRCA] DXpedition capture files?

2015-10-30 Thread Aaron Kreider
For file storage, there are some hosts that specialize in file storage.
I've got a 400 GB plan at cloudshards.com for $12.75/month - it's a
virtual server with very limited memory/cpu and lots of disk space.

A lot of regular web host companies will promised "unlimited" disk
space, but tend to over promise.

An even cheaper alternative might be torrents. You'd need at least one
or two people to keep the seed going, and then a centralized list of the
torrents that are available.

I personally haven't done much recording because the SDRMax recording
and playback functionality (for the QS1R) is very poor. Maybe I should
figure out how to use HDSDR for recording.
