For Israelites, the matter was not that they were
given the message through Moosa ages ago, which they lost for lack of
reminders or refreshers over all that long period. The fact is that were
continuously reminded the message throughout that
  time.

87 Verily We gave Moosa the Book and We
sent many messengers after him in succession; and We gave ‘Eesa, the son
of Maryam, clear proofs and assisted him with the holy spirit.  Why is that whenever a messenger
came to you with something against your wishes, you were insolent? So you
rejected some and killed others. 88 And they say: Our hearts are protected.
Rather, Allaah has cursed them because of their disbelief; little do they
  believe.

  Clear
proofs include all those astounding miracles the Allaah SWT showed them
through ‘Eesa ‘alayhissalaam like his miraculous birth, speaking as an
infant, curing diseases, raising the dead, etc. Holy spirit refers to
angel Jibreel (Gabriel) who supported ‘Eesa in his mission in his
miracles. There was nothing unusual about Jibreel supporting ‘Eesa because
that is Jibreel’s job and he has supported all the messengers of Allaah.
However, in case of ‘Eesa it became a source of misguidance for both the
Jews and the Christians. The Jews had accused ‘Eesa that he was supported
by shaytaan[1]. On the other hand, the Christians thought
that ‘Eesa performed the miracles with his own power which became a reason
for them to deify him. In addition, they also deified the “holy spirit” as
the third in the three. The Qur-aan specifically mentions Jibreel’s help
to ‘Eesa to subtly refute such incorrect, extremist views on both sides.

  Reminders
and refreshers from a chain of successive messengers should have kept the
Islamic spirit alive in the hearts of Israelites and kept them on track
and fully dedicated to the Islamic mission. Instead, they opposed them and
  even killed some of them.
This is the result of overemphasizing the traditions and customs of
the society. When people become loyal to the traditions and customs that
have been passed on to them from earlier generations, they do not want to
listen to any message of reform which want to purify their lifestyles,
removing the innovations and heresies that creep over time among the
practices of people and bringing them back to the pure teachings of Islam,
its missions and its objectives. Ironically, they even feel proud of their
being impervious to the teachings of the reformers and of their loyalty to
the ignorant traditions and customs of society. That is what the Jews did
in response to the teachings of the prophets. They boasted that their
hearts are preserved and protected form such reforming influences.
Unfortunately, many Muslims respond exactly in that style when they are
invited to come back to the pure Islam as it was presented and practised
  by the Prophet and his
  companions.

 The Splashes of Life..
My grandfather took me to the fish pond on the farm when I was
about seven, and he told me to throw a stone into the water. He told me to watch
the circles created by the stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that
stone person. "You may create lots of splashes in your life but the
waves that come from those splashes will disturb the peace of all your fellow
creatures," he said. "Remember that you are responsible for what you put in your
circle and that circle will also touch many other circles. You will need to live
in a way that allows the good that comes from your circle to send the peace of
that goodness to others. The splash that comes from anger or jealousy will send
those feelings to other circles. You are responsible for both."
That was the first time I realized each person creates the inner
peace or discord that flows out into the world. We cannot create world peace if
we are riddled with inner conflict, hatred, doubt, or anger. We radiate the
feelings and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we speak them or not.
Whatever is splashing around inside of us is spilling out into the world,
creating beauty or discord with all other circles of life. Author Unknown

[IslamCity] Difference between the Qur'an and Hadith

2005-03-07 Thread Syeda Muneeba Masood

The difference between the Qur'an and Hadith
There is agreement among most Muslim scholars that the contents of the sunna are also from Allah. Hence they have described it as also being the result of some form of inspiration. [For details see kitab al-risala, by Imam al-Shafi'i, Cairo, n.d., especially pp. 28-9. In English: Khadduri Majid, Islamic Jurisprudence. Shafi'i's Risala, Baltimore, 1961, chapter 5, especially pp. 121-2.] The contents of the sunna are however expressed through the Prophet's own words or actions, while in the case of the Qur'an the Angel Gabriel brought the exact wording and contents to the Prophet, who received this as revelation and then announced it, in the very same manner that he received it.
The difference between these two forms has been illustrated by Suyuti (following Juwaini) in the following manner:

'The revealed speech of Allah is of two kinds: As to the first kind, Allah says to Gabriel: Tell the Prophet to whom I sent you that Allah tells him to do this and this, and He ordered him something. So Gabriel understood what His Lord had told him. Then he descended with this to the Prophet and told him what His Lord had told him, but the _expression_ is not this (same) _expression_, just as a king says to someone upon whom he relies: Tell so-and-so: The king says to you: strive in his service and gather your army for fighting ... and when the messenger (goes and) says: The king tells you: do not fail in my service, and do not let the army break up, and call for fighting, etc., then he has not lied nor shortened (the message) ...
'And as to the other kind, Allah says to Gabriel: Read to the Prophet this (piece of) writing, and Gabriel descended with it from Allah, without altering it the least, just as (if) the king writes a written (instruction) and hands it over to his trustworthy (servant) and says (to him): Read it to so-and-so. Suyuti said: The Qur'an belongs to the second kind, and the first kind is the Sunna, and from this derives the reporting of the Sunna according to the meaning unlike the Qur'an." [Sabuni, tibyan, p.52]
It is generally accepted that the difference between Qur'an and sunna is as follows:
The ahadith from or about the Prophet Muhammad are:

The words or actions of a human being, and not the speech of God as the Qur'an is.
Not necessarily reported in their precise wording, as the Qur'an is.
Not necessarily transmitted by tawatur, except in some instances.

  Mabruk Ya Mabruk, Chief Protagonist
Amina Wadud, the self-styled “feminist” and champion of “Liberal Islam”
certainly has issues with her identity. You can see this from the “two

  With hijab

  Without hijab
Its one thing to be consistent and either wear or do not wear the
hijab. That would then be an issue between Wadud and God. However, it is
totally a different matter when you wear the hijab according to your
  “target audience". Interesting? You betcha.
This feature is brought to you today by the letter “H", for hypocrisy",
and “hypocrisy” is indeed the middle name of Amina Wadud.

sermon. Dr.Wadud, the author of the groundbreaking book Qur'an and
Woman: Rereading theSacred Text from a Woman's Perspective, is an
esteemed scholar of Islam whoaffirms the right of Muslim women to be
prayer leaders. It is a generallyheld view in the Muslim world and in
the American Muslim community thatwomen cannot lead mixed-gender prayer.
This custom is pervasive and goesunchallenged. Research from the Qur'an
and the customs of Prophet Muhammaddemonstrate that there is no
prohibition precluding women from leadingmixed-gender prayer and,
further, that Prophet Muhammad approved thepractice of women leading
mixed-gender prayer. Over the centuries, Muslimwomen have lost their
place as intellectual and spiritual leaders. On March 18, 2005 Muslim
women will reclaim their right to be spiritualequals and leaders. Women
will move from the space tradition has relegatedthem in the back of the
mosque and pray in the front rows. Our effort will be part of a broader
campaign to create communities in thatrise to the highest principles of

BOGOTA, Colombia - A United Nations official called Thursday for an investigation into the massacre of eight civilians following accusations Colombian Army soldiers carried out the killings, in which victims were hacked to pieces.
The attack was one of the most horrific in Colombia's brutal war. The eight victims, including three young children and a teenage girl, were buried on a farm in northwest Colombia. A former mayor and a priest have blamed government troops for the massacre

Why the U.S. Must Get Out of Iraq, ProntoMaj. General Harry Upman (retired)

March 2, 2005Let me say in no uncertain terms, we must get out of Iraq. There is nothing to gain and everything to lose in Iraq. We have lost over four thousand of our military, those who were killed in Iraq and those who died in intransit from Iraq to our hospitals in Germany and in Europe. We have had over 10,000 of our troops wounded. According to a report I heard last night on Frontline on PBS, 1 in 6 of our people coming home from Iraq need mental help. What have we gained in Iraq? Absolutely nothing. What have we lost? Our leadership in the world militarily, morally and financially.

Welcome to Doomsday

There are times when what we journalists see and intend to write about dispassionately sends a shiver down the spine, shaking us from our neutrality. This has been happening to me frequently of late as one story after another drives home the fact that the delusional is no longer marginal but has come in from the fringe to influence the seats of power. We are witnessing today a coupling of ideology and theology that threatens our ability to meet the growing ecological crisis. Theology asserts propositions that need not be proven true, while ideologues hold stoutly to a world view despite being contradicted by what is generally accepted as reality. The combination can make it impossible for a democracy to fashion real-world solutions to otherwise intractable challenges.

[IslamCity] Al-Fatiha The Three Levels

2005-03-07 Thread soft wind

al-Fatihah: The Three Levels of Guidance

Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyyah

Madaarij as-Saalikeen

Reciting Sooratul-Faatihah as we all know, is an essential part of our daily prayers. It was narrated by Ubada bin As-Samit that Allah's Messenger (salla llaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Whoever does not recite Surat Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is invalid". This motivates every Muslim to understand the deep meanings behind the words of this Soorah. Consequently, this helps us in keeping Khushoo' while standing in front of Allaah in our prayers.
In this Soorah we start by praising Allah the Lord of mankind, jinns and all that exists, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful, and the only Owner of the Day of Recompense. Then we declare that we worship Him alone, and from Him alone we ask for help.
Then we ask Him to guide us to the straight path. In his valuable book "Al- Madaarij As-Saalikeen " Ibn Al-Qayyim points out three levels of guidance.
First , Guidance of Bayaan, "clarification". This does not happen except through Allah's prophets whom He sends to explain to mankind the essence of His message and to show them the way to the straight path.
Second, Guidance of Tawfeeq, "success" (on the straight path). In this level we ask Allah to open our hearts to his religion and to be steadfast upon it; by this it becomes the most precious thing in our lives.
Although these two levels of Guidance are separate, reaching the straight path would not be achieved except by them both. These two levels include gaining the knowledge of what we did not know about the truth and becoming anxious to follow it openly and secretly, the ability to fulfil our duty through our sayings, actions and intentions, and to ask Allah to keep us firm on this path till we die.
Some people would ask why do we need to ask for guidance while we are already guided; we know Allah and we believe in Him? We need to believe without doubt that we all are always in need to ask for guidance because the things which we do not know are more than the things which we know. The things which we do not do due to our carelessness or laziness are much more than the things which we do, the same can be said about the things which we are incapable of doing. Those of us who do not see any lack concerning their knowledge or practice need to ask the guidance from Allah to keep them in this state till they die.
The third level of guidance would be the guidance in the Day of Judgement to the way which leads to Paradise . Whoever is guided in life to Allah's path according to what He sent His messengers with, would be guided to the straight path in the Hereafter.
If we want to know how we are going to pass the straight path above Hell in the Hereafter we have to examine the way we are passing Allah's path in this life. We are going to walk there the same way we walk here. Some people would pass like a glimpse, some would pass like the wind ,some would walk slowly and some would creep and others would stuck and then would be thrownin hell fire. So let each one of us examine the way we will pass there from the way we are passing here. And let us examine carefully the things whichare holding us from passing the straight pass whether they are our desires or confused ideas. These things are like chains which delay or stop our movement on the staight path. It is really fearful to say that if these chains are many, solid and heavy here in life they are going to be the same when we are going to pass the straight pass above Hell.
When we ask Allah in Sooratul-Faatihah to guide us to the straight path we ask Him to put us with those whom He has bestowed His Grace on. Here we need to ask two questions.
First, who are those people ?
Second, if we choose to follow the straight path which leads to Allah why do we need to be accompanied with those people?
Ibn Al-Qayyim explained that the one who wants to follow the straight path in this life finds that the majority of people around him or her do not want to follow the same path. And because the human soul normaly looks for a companion Allah (swt) pointed out the importance for having a comapny on this road. Allah (swt) defined this company by saing in Surah An-Nisa verse 69:
"Those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqun (those followers of the prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them, like Abu Bakr As-Siddiq ) , the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!"
If sometimes we feel lonely when passing Allah's path we need to think of those who passed or are passing the same path, to know that they are our company , and to make our best to follow their steps. At the same time we should not pay any attention to those who do not want to choose the same path and should be strong enough so we do not let them detain us.
One of Al-Salaf said: "Stick firmly to the path of truth and do not feel lonely because of the few number of people who would join you, and be

Dollar's Fall Tests Nerve of Asia's Central BankersBy JAMES BROOKE and KEITH BRADSHER

OKYO, Dec. 3 - As Americans embark on another season of debt-supported holiday spending, they might want to give thanks that Masatsugu Asakawa is still buying in America, too.
Mr. Asakawa, 46, is the top official at the Finance Ministry here responsible for managing the largest portfolio of United States government securities in the world, worth a staggering $720 billion. As the dollar has slumped this fall, many investors have started to worry that Mr. Asakawa and his counterparts elsewhere in Asia will be tempted to pare their holdings, perhaps causing the currency to plunge much further and setting off a round of interest rate increases in the United States that could send the global economy into a tailspin.
But Mr. Asakawa, at least for now, says that he intends to keep right on adding American holdings to Tokyo's portfolio.
"We've heard the rumors in the last few days that the Chinese guys, the Indian guys, the South African guys are diverting from dollars," Mr. Asakawa said. "We have no plan at all to divert from our dollar-denominated assets."
Still, Mr. Asakawa admits that he has not been sleeping so well lately.
"This thing wakes me up; it is terrible," Mr. Asakawa said in excellent American-accented English - he once studied at Princeton - as he toyed with a blue plastic portable currency monitor. After hours, the wireless device beeps by his bedside whenever the dollar strays beyond a set range. "Fortunately," he said, "my wife is very understanding."
Mr. Asakawa has been waking up a lot more often because the long-running symbiotic relationship between Asia and the United States has started to fray.
For years, manufacturers in Japan, China, South Korea and Taiwan have been selling far more to Americans than Asians have been buying from the United States. As a result, Asians have accumulated huge quantities of foreign exchange, which they have used mostly to buy American government securities.
By doing so, they helped keep interest rates in the United States low and the dollar relatively strong. That allowed Americans to borrow cheaply and fill their shopping bags with yet another load of well-priced goods imported from Asia. Low interest rates also enabled Washington to readily finance the federal government's gaping budget deficit.
But as borrowing by the United States from abroad has soared this year to $620 billion, a record 5.7 percent of overall economic activity, many foreigners have become reluctant to keep accumulating dollars at the same pace. That has left officials like Mr. Asakawa and others at central banks elsewhere in Asia holding America's purse strings.
Japan's total stockpile of foreign currency, at $817 billion, is still the largest in the world, but China, which now owns about $600 billion, is catching up fast.
Among countries that are accumulating dollars - especially China - grumbling is on the rise that Washington should do more to protect the value of their investments by cutting the budget deficit and adopting other policies to slow or reverse the dollar's decline.
"Shouldn't the relevant authorities be doing something about this?" asked Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of China at a conference in Laos last Sunday.
In Beijing these days, one of the fastest-growing fortunes the world has ever seen is managed by fewer than two dozen traders, chosen for showing mathematical brilliance at China's top universities.
Generally lacking any financial experience outside China, they sit at trading stations around a gold stand bearing a jeweled globe, two feet in diameter and with seas of lapis lazuli, in a rented room on the fourth floor of an insurance building.
Most of the money in China's central bank coffers has accumulated in the last four years, the product of an investment torrent washing over China and the ever-expanding flood of goods pouring out of Chinese factories.
As in Japan and China, small groups of civil servants in Taiwan and South Korea are struggling to invest sizable foreign currency reserves of $235 billion and $193 billion, respectively. For years, all four countries have held the bulk of their reserves in the Treasury bills, notes, and bonds that finance the federal budget deficit, leaving American consumers and companies free to spend more on other things and invest their spare cash in more promising ventures.
Together, these Asian institutions are responsible for holding roughly 40 percent of the American government's public debt.

I Swear by the positions of stars
Men & The Universe
By Capt Anas Abdul Hameed Al-Qoz
A primitive observer will think that stars are close to us, that if he climbed a mountain he might be able to touch some of them. This was the attitude of Pharoah of Egypt when he declared, as recounted by the Quraan:
“O Haman! Build for me a tower that haply I may reach the roads, The roads of the heavens, and may look upon the God of Moses,...”[Surah Ghafir Ayah 36-37]
The scientific progress, however has revealed the distances of stars, which were unknown to humans over the ages. The sun for instance, is 93 million miles from us (150 million km), a distance that light travelling at a speed of 300 km/sec covers in eight minutes. Light covers the distance between the nearest star to earth in four and a quarter years. Some stars are one hundred, light years away from us (i.e. light takes a hundred years to cover the distance from that star to the earth), some are a million years away, some are 340 million years away, and some are many more million years away! Does not this reveal to us new meanings, unknown to previous generations, of the following verses:
“Nay, I swear by the Mawaqi (positions) of the stars - And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if you but knew”[Surah Al-Waqiah Ayah 74-75]SOURCE:

I live in New Delhi and often visit Idara, the publishers of Fazail e Amail who CONTINUE TO sell it, infact keep bringing out different editions of the book and its components. I could check with them about the tawbah story - which, from the likes of it sounds like fraud.

[IslamCity] Dream of Prophet Mohammad (SalAllaho Alaihi Wasallam)

2005-03-07 Thread Syeda Muneeba Masood

DREAM OF PROPHET MOHAMMAD (SalAllaho Alaihi Wasallam)http://groups.msn.com/IslamisUniversal
It was the noble habit of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that after the Fajr salaat he used to turn and face his companions and ask them: "Did anyone of you see any dream last night?" If anyone saw a dream, he would relate it to him and he would give some interpretation to it. As was his habit, he once asked them if any one of them had seen any dream. They all said that they had not seen any dream. He then said: "I saw a dream last night that two people came to me, took hold of my hand and led me towards a sacred place. I saw a man sitting and another standing with pincers in his hand. He was tearing open the sitting man's cheek until it reached his neck. He then did the same with the other cheek. In the meantime, the first cheek came back to its normal position, so he did the same to it again. I asked the angels: "What is this?" They replied: "Carry on further."
We continued further until we passed by a person who was lying down and another person was standing at his head-side with a heavy boulder in his hand. He took the boulder and, with full force, he burst his head. Once the boulder struck him, it fell and rolled away to a far distance. When he went to pick up that boulder and by the time that he returned, this person's head became normal again. So he burst it again. I asked them: "What is this?" They replied: "Carry on further."
We carried on further until we reached a cave which was like an oven. It was very wide at the bottom and very narrow on top. A fire was burning in it and it was filled with many naked men and women. When the flames rose, all of them rose with it until they were about to fall out. When the flames subsided, they all also went down with it. I asked them: "What is this?" They both replied: "Carry on further."
We proceeded further until we reached a river of blood. A person was standing in the centre of the river, and on the bank another man was standing with many boulders in front of him. The man in the centre walked towards the bank and when he was about to come out, the person on the bank threw a boulder on his face with such force that he returned to his original place in the centre. When he tried to come out again, he threw a boulder at him and sent him back. I asked them: "What is this?" They replied: "Carry on further."
We proceeded further until we reached a green and luscious garden. There was a huge tree and under it an old man and many children were sitting. Near the tree there was another man sitting. There was a fire burning in front of him which he was blowing. Thereafter my two companions lifted me up and took me on top of the tree. Within the tree, a beautiful house was being constructed. They took me inside it; I had never seen such a beautiful house. There were many old and young men and women, and many children inside. After taking me outside, we went to an even higher place. Over there was a house which was better than the first one. They took me inside; there were also young and old people in it. I said to those two persons: "You took me around throughout the night, now tell me about all these mysteries."
One of them said: " The one whose cheeks you saw being torn apart is a liar. He used to speak lies until they used to become famous everywhere. They will continue doing this to him right until qiyaamah. As for the one whose head you saw getting smashed, he was a person whom Allah had given knowledge of the Quran. He was negligent of it at night and did not practise on it during the day. He will be punished right until qiyaamah in this way. As for those whom you saw in the cave of fire, they were all adulterers. As for the one in the river of blood, he was a devourer of usury (interest). The old man under the tree is Ibrahim alayhis salaam and all the children around him are the infants of other people. The person blowing the fire is the Guardian of Hell. The first house which you entered is for the general Muslims. The second house is for the martyrs. I am Jibra'eel and this is Mika'eel." He then said: "Lift
your head." I lifted my head and saw a white cloud above me. He said: "This is your house." I said: "Let me enter my house." He replied: "Your life is not completed yet. There's still some time left. If it was complete, you would have entered it now."
Lesson: It should be known that dreams of prophets are revelations. All these incidents are true. Several things are learnt from this Hadith: (a) the severe punishment for speaking lies, (b) the fate of an aalim who does not practise on his knowledge, (c) the punishment for adultery, (d) the punishment for devouring interest. May Allah Ta'ala protect all Muslims from all these sins.

[IslamCity] ''EVERYTHING THAT'S HAPPENING IN IRAQ IS COMPLETELY SENSELESS AND MAD''

2005-03-07 Thread assalamu alaykum

US Forces Wound Freed Italian Hostage in Iraq
By Andrew Marshall
Reuters
Fri Mar 4, 2005
http://www.reuters.com/printerFriendlyPopup.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=7813438

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena
was freed by her captors on Friday but U.S. forces
mistakenly opened fire on the convoy taking her to
safety, wounding her and killing an Italian secret
service agent.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he had
immediately summoned the U.S. ambassador, declaring
someone had to take responsibility for U.S. soldiers
opening fire.

He told a news conference the agent was shot dead at a
U.S. checkpoint and that Sgrena had been wounded in
the shoulder.

"This news which should have be a moment of
celebration, has been ruined by this firefight," said
Gabriele Polo, editor of the Communist Rome-based Il
Manifesto newspaper.

"An Italian agent has been killed by an American
bullet. A tragic demonstration which we never wanted
that everything that's happening in Iraq is completely
senseless and mad," he told Sky Italia television,
struggling to fight back tears.

The U.S. military had no immediate comment.

The 57-year-old Sgrena was kidnapped on Feb. 4.
Insurgents later released a video of her sobbing and
wringing her hands as she pleaded for Italian troops
to leave Iraq.

In new video aired on Al Jazeera on Friday, Sgrena was
shown wearing a black dress and sitting in front of a
table with a plate of fruit. Jazeera said that on the
tape, Sgrena thanked her captors for treating her
well.

Sgrena was one of two female Western journalists
abducted in Baghdad this year. Florence Aubenas of
France's Liberation was seized along with her Iraqi
driver on Jan. 5.

Aubenas appeared in a videotape distributed by her
captors this week, looking distraught and exhausted.

More than 150 foreigners, including several Western
journalists, have been seized by insurgents over the
past year. Most have been freed but many have been
killed -- sometimes in beheadings that were filmed and
posted on the Internet.

The kidnappings have highlighted the lawlessness
gripping large areas of Iraq where insurgents mount
frequent attacks, crime is rife and Iraqi forces have
little control.
Last year, Italian journalist Enzo Baldoni was seized
south of Baghdad and later killed by his captors.

Six other Italians have been kidnapped in Iraq. Four
private security guards were kidnapped in April and
one was later killed, and in September two female
Italian aid workers were snatched in Baghdad before
being released three weeks later.

The hostage crises have fueled criticism in Italy of
the government's backing for the war in Iraq.

CAR BOMB, ASSASSINATION

Insurgents trying to overthrow Iraq's U.S.-backed
government mounted fresh attacks on Friday. In Baquba,
northeast of Baghdad, a car bomb killed one civilian,
police said.

In the mainly Shi'ite southern Iraq town of Budair,
the local police chief was assassinated. The Polish
military, which is in charge of security in the area,
said Colonel Ghaib Hadab Zarib was shot dead by gunmen
armed with AK-47s.

In the restive northern city of Mosul, a car bomb
exploded near a U.S. military convoy. Al Qaeda's wing
in Iraq issued an Internet statement claiming
responsibility for the blast and saying it was a
suicide bombing. The U.S. military said it had no
immediate information on any casualties.

In another Internet statement on Friday, the al Qaeda
group in Iraq led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab
al-Zarqawi said a string of suicide attacks in recent
days disproved assertions by the Iraqi government that
the network was crumbling.

"What happened ... and will happen in coming days is a
response to infidel deceptions and claims that the
mujahideen are weaker and that their attacks have
abated," said the statement attributed to the military
commander of the Al Qaeda Organization for Holy War in
Iraq, Abu Aseed al-Iraqi.

On Monday, a suicide bomb for which the group claimed
responsibility killed 125 people south of Baghdad --
the deadliest single insurgent attack since Saddam
Hussein fell.

The group also said it carried out two suicide
bombings in Baghdad on Thursday in a bid to
assassinate the interior minister. The minister was
unhurt but five police were killed.

Iraq's government says it has captured several key al
Qaeda leaders and the net is closing on Zarqawi.

But the group's Internet statement was defiant.
"Iraq's plains and deserts have turned into volcanoes
erupting beneath the infidels and all around them," it
said. "We call on all Muslims who cherish their faith
to strike with the sword." (Additional reporting by
Firouz Sedarat in Dubai and Roberto Landucci in Rome)

I am sometimes overwhelmed with a great dread when I look at the Ummah. I have worked in educating Muslims, young and old. And there are so many I can find who can recite verse after verse, quote narration after narration, and talk on scholars opinions for hours. But, so many of them lack the one true quality that will make it all worth while. What is it? continue

SUBMISSION!

Just to illustrate, let us consider a verse I am particularly enamored with lately.

God says what means, " He it is who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and the Wisdom. And verily, they had been before in manifest error." [ AlJumu'ah 62: 2 ]

The word used here for reciting is 'yatlu'. Its construct as a noun would be 'tilaawah', a very familiar term to those accustomed to listening to Qur'aan. Now, this term is invariably translated as 'reciting', but I will attempt to show how that is a very limited meaning.

Elsewhere in the Qur'aan, God seeks to explain what 'tilaawah' is. He says, what means,

"Those to whom We gave the Book recite it as it should be recited they are the ones who believe therein. And whoso disbelieve in it, those are they who are the losers." (AlBaqarah 2: 121)

Now again the word used for recite is from the form of 'tilaawah'. As the verse indicates, these fortunate people 'recite it as it should be recited'. What does this mean?

If we look into the commentary of Ibn Katheer, we find some very interesting explanation. The Prophet (God's prayers and peace be upon him) is recorded as saying,

". . . follow it as it should be followed . . ." (AlQurtubee).

Now, admittedly, this narration has a weak chain, but AlQurtubee states that its meaning is sound. In support of this, Ibn Katheer quotes more than one Companion who said exactly the same thing in explaining this verse. The word our Prophet (God's prayers and peace be upon him) used was 'Ittiba`'. If we look into this word a little we find some illuminating things.

'Ittiba`' means adherence to and compliance with something. The root of the word carries the additional meaning of being subordinate to something. So this is the way we should approach the Qur'aan. We should adhere to it, comply with it, and be subordinate to it; ACTING on its commandments, and BELIEVING in its ambiguous texts, as AlHassan AlBasree said.

Read: SUBMIT TO IT!

This quality should be nutured in all of us, young and old, first. With this submission in place, a little or a lot of knowledge will not matter as much. You will submit to whatever you learn readily. As God indicated in the verse we quoted at the beginning, this was the FIRST stage of the Prophet's (God's peace and blessings be upon him) mission. Yet we seem to be missing this in so many of our lives and much of our world. Through this submission, we are exalted. Consider what Imaam Malik recorded one of the Companions,

"Sadaqah does not decrease property, and God only increases a slave in worth for his restraint, and no slave is humble but that God raises him."

So it is by this that honor is found. By being humble (for God's sake) and submitting ourselves WILLILNGLY to God, in this is our success. Consider the very name of our Way of Life, AlIslaam. It is derived from a word that connotes submission. Everywhere you look in our Way of Life you will find it, so why do we run from it?

I have written this not to show case my knowledge, for how could I show what I do not have, or to advise the Ummah (alone). By far, I am in need of this advice as much and even more than most of you. So please, take it as a serious attempt at trying to fulfill my obligations of advising the Muslims, myself included.

"The Way of Life is giving good counsel".

Israel: Palestinians bombarded by porn.
Pornographic films and programmes in Hebrew are being broadcast by Israeli
troops who took over three Palestinian television stations of Ramallah,
according to a report by AFP.
The Al-Watan, Ammwaj, and Al-Sharaq channels were occupied by soldiers, who
started broadcasting the porn clips - considered extremely offensive by most
Muslims - intermittently.
'They started on Al-Watan television at around 3:30 pm,' said one Palestinian
mother. 'I have six children at home, they have nowhere to go with what is going
on here and can't even watch TV,' she said angrily.
Another mother complained about 'the deliberate psychological damage caused
by these broadcasts. We are desperate for news and constantly flipping channels
and get these terrible pictures instead,' she added.
A fourth local station, whose premises were not seized by the army, ran a
written message across its screen letting people know who was behind the graphic
scenes. 'Anything currently shown on Al-Watan and other local TV channels has
nothing to do with Palestinian programmes but is being broadcast by the Israeli
occupation forces, we urge parents to take precautions,' the message said.
The Israeli military denied that it had anything to do with the pornographic
programming and instead blamed the Palestinian leaders.
An Israeli foreign ministry spokesman said any such broadcasting was
'shameful'. 'I cannot believe that Israeli soldiers would engage in such
despicable behaviour,' he said.

[IslamCity] CHRISTIAN NAZI HATE GROUP HIJACKS BISMILLAH

2005-03-07 Thread assalamu alaykum

CHRISTIAN NAZI HATE GROUP HIJACKS BISMILLAH

SEE their main webpage at
http://www.aryan-nations.org/ for their display of
Bismillah. The image itself is at the url below.

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (Arabic)
http://www.aryan-nations.org/images/Bismillah%20ir%20rahman%20ir%20rahim.gif

If you don't know who the "Aryan Nations" are, scroll
down at their site to see their nazi swastika flag.
Then you'll know.

The filth of the Aryan Nations, like their kindred
zionist and klan scum, have no place in Islam.

While forthright condemnation of zionism's nazi master
race hate ideology is both natural and logical,
Muslims NEVER support nazism, which like zionism is
just another haraam doctrine of racial hate.

Zionism is a hate doctrine, not a religion or an
ethnic group. Nazis oppose zionism not because it is a
hate doctrine, but because they hope to gain adherents
in their quest to kill anyone who isn't christian. And
that includes us.

The way to condemn zionism is to confront its
perpetrators with their own nazi essence as contained
in the master race writings of zionist adherents.

[IslamCity] THE STRAIGHT PATH

2005-03-07 Thread pen

THE STRAIGHT PATH

A train
which runs on its tracks will have no trouble in reaching its destination. But
should its wheels slip off the rails --- no matter to what side --- its journey
will come to a sudden and disastrous end. Man’s journey through life is in same
ways on a parallel. If he goes off the rails, it will spell catastrophe. But if
he continues to travel along the straight and narrow path which leads directly
to God, he will safely reach his destination.

Many
examples of the human aberration --- a ‘ going-off-the rails’ --- can be cited:
the satisfying of one’s selfish desires to the exclusion of all else; total
absorption in the greatness of some human individual, living or dead; aiming, by
preference, at unworthy objectives; obeying impulses of jealousy, hate and
vindictiveness, dedicating oneself to any nation or party on the assumption that
it is supreme. All of these paths are crooked and diverge from the true way. No
one who chooses such a path can ever hope to reach his true goal in life.

It is a sad
fact that one tends to stray from the straight path whenever one is obsessed
with some thing, person or idea other than God. Whenever one’s efforts are
directed elsewhere, one is embarking on a detour which can never bring one back
to God. Such deviation from the true path can cause Man to go totally
astray.

The only
sure way to spiritual success is to focus one’s attentions and efforts on God
alone. This is the straight path and involves total attachment to God and a life
lived out in complete accordance with His
will.

Any path
which is not directed towards God is a wrong turning, and will never lead Man to
his true destination.

There is nothing against the original book that is written in
Arabic. There it is clearly marked against
each Hadith as to whether it is weak, unsubstantiated or
strong but its translation in Urdu or English has spoiled its beauty as
these essential remarks have  perhaps "Intentionally" been
omitted, making these stories unreliable, concocted, exaggerated and out of
context. Thus the beauty of the original book is lost and hence its translation
is "good for nothing."  I feel sorry for it.

Here is a du'a from the Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, which sums up a key aspect of spiritual development:

IMPORTANT WAR NEWS WHICH MOST PEOPLE MISSED
[from our media monitor]
The U.S. has been informed by Karzai, the ruler of Kabul, that he cannot rule Afghanistan without U.S. helpÂand will need PERMANENT military bases in Afghanistan to be able to survive. This fact came out in a convoluted way after Arizona Senator John McCain's visit with Karzai on February 22. After the visit McCain stated that the U.S. will need to have "permanent military bases" in Afghanistan to secure its "vital national security interests." Asked by reporters to explain, he put it diplomatically that a "strategic partnership" will be needed with Karzai for "many, many years."
ÂÂ In plain language, the "liberation" of Afghanistan has failed. If the U.S. and NATO [Germany is to be the sacrificial lamb here] withdraw, the Taliban will return. Mullah 'Umar has announced a military offensive against the occupation forces as soon as spring comes in. The green banners of Islam are rising in the mountains of Afghanistan

Boycott of Businesses which Support Israel
Starbucks Coffee Going Down the Drain!
Thought the already well informed New Trend readers might be interested in this item since you have launched your own Boycott Israeli Goods campaign.
ÂThe Islamic Human Rights Commission and Innovative Minds, supported by the UK-based charity Friends of al-Aqsa, the Muslim Assoication of Britain, the Palestinian Return Centre, and the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, have been in a series of talks with the charity Oxfam regarding its agreement with the pro-Zionist multinational coffee chain Starbucks.
ÂIHRC proudly announced last week that Oxfam will soon announce that it will not be renewing its one-year contract with Starbucks, which terminates in September.
ÂIn October 2004 it emerged that Starbucks had agreed to donated 100,000 stirling pounds to Oxfam's rural development programme in the East Harare coffee growing region of Ethiopia. (For reference see Innovative Minds webpage: http://ww.inminds.co.uk/boycott-oxfam.html
ÂThis is a tremendous victory for human rights campaigners who have been calling for justice in Palestine. Starbucks' chairman Howard Schultz is a well known pro-Zionist activist whose own initiatives include helping student projects in America and Israel give one-sided presentations on the Israeli view of the Second Intifada.
ÂStarbucks has also supported the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan as well as promoted other Zionist initiatives.
ÂNow would be a good opportunity to send messages of thanks and solidarity to Babarbara Stocking, Director of Oxfam, Oxfam House, 274 Banbury Road, Oxford, England. OX2 7DZ.

[IslamCity] ACT: Calling on Ulema

Calling on Ulema
Dr. Maher Hathout, Sr. Adviser, Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC)

We praise Allah. We humbly ask him to grant us the best in this life and in the life hereafter. And we ask him to shower his peace and blessings on the last of his messengers, his gift to the humanity, Muhammad (PBUH). We bear witness that there is no deity, save Allah and we bear witness that Muhammad (PBUH) is the servant and messenger of Allah.

My dear Muslims, there is no doubt that in the minds of us Muslims and in the minds of all of you who are here, the status of Ummah of Islam need to change. The status of Ummah now is getting to a stage where it is insensible and unbearable. If you ask me to describe, how do you think the Ummah is, I would probably find one word. I will tell you "bleeding", because this is the reality. We are bleeding on the hands of those who don't like us, and on the hands of those who claim that they like us, on the hands of the others as well as on the hands of those who are for fake or for real invoking an Islamic title.

That pain and painful situation reached its peak this previous week when someone blew himself up in the crowd in the city of al-Hillah in Iraq. A crowd that was getting medical examination to be cleared for governmental jobs and he decided killing himself, 150 people were killed, about the same number were wounded. Some of them probably will live the rest of their lives disabled and disfigured. Some children in that market perished on the scene. And whoever for real or for fake, who did that claimed in the name of Islam.

That title Islam, regardless who is using it, is there. A pool of blood and the field of body parts occupied the TV screens and the front page photos of the media of the world. Whether we like it or not,  it is affecting the image and impression the people have about Islam and about Muslims, which we can not keep denying it. It is a reality. We Muslims look at these things and take different direction and this is probably the case where a majority is being numb.

As a matter of fact, I was talking to some very good brothers and sisters, who said, "What is so special? This has been happening repeatedly." This is the  numb effect. Because this has been happening, so another 150 is not a big deal. Some say, "But the others do even worse." Some go to complete denial, "look to the other way." Some try to find explanations and justifications. Some resort to conspiracy theories, for real or false it doesn't matter. But none of these attitudes are going to make a change. And what happens, we the Ummah of Islam will be sitting and waiting for other incidents to go through  the very same cycle without having any hope for a change and what is so scary is the absence of Quran in this discourse. I don't see Quran is in the middle of this discussion. We
can not change because a change happens only through the collective will of a group. We can not change our status without collectivity that they call it in modern times "the collective political will". I am not talking political, I am saying about the collective will of all of us to see a change.

And if you notice the Quran, it  talks about change always in a collective way.

"O you who believe! Stand out firmly for God, as witnesses to fair dealing, ..." (Qur'an 5: 8)

"O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God,..." (Qur'an  4:134)

"O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do." (Qur'an 61:2)

Those who wait for a person or a small group of people to make a change are harboring their faith to failure and dictatorship. The change should be collective.

Even when Quran talks to us about discipline and complying of leadership, it says "... obey Allah and obey the Rasul and those given the authority to command from among you." (Qur'an 4:59)

Ulil Amr and NOT Waliul Amr as it became fashionable in the modern times (Wali means Protector, Guardian, Supporter, Helper, Friend etc.).  Ulil Amr  is a collective leadership. Minkum means that comes out of you all. It is a collective movement. We shouldn't be waiting for a hero to come and make the change. We shouldn't be waiting for a single voice or a small group of people to say "that is right" or "that is wrong." It is supposed to be the collectivity of the Ummah that makes a decision and that creates an awareness and that moves to depart away from anything  that is against the Quran.

What can ignite the collective will of Muslims? It is always the Quran and it will always be the Quran, Insha Allah. It is the only thing that we have to look at and feel that it is talking to our hearts and to our minds to change us and to galvanize us to make a change.

So the Quranic injunction is very clear, "But the one who deliberately kills another believer, his requital is hell, where he abides there permanently, and Allah will be angry and pour His wrath on him, and He will curse him and He will prepare for him a hor

[Italy demands answer as journalist liberation turns bloody Freed Italian hostage Giuliana Sgrena, wounded by US soldiers, returned home as the United States sought to provide answers to an angry Italy over the deadly shooting of her convoy.]
ROME - The companion of freed Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena on Saturday leveled serious accusations at US troops who fired at her convoy as it was nearing Baghdad airport, saying the shooting had been deliberate.
"The Americans and Italians knew about (her) car coming," Pier Scolari said on leaving Rome's Celio military hospital where Sgrena is to undergo surgery following her return home.
"They were 700 meters (yards) from the airport, which means that they had passed all checkpoints."
The shooting late Friday was witnessed by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's office which was on the phone with one of the secret service agents, said Scolari. "Then the US military silenced the cellphones," he charged.

Agent Orange, Depleted Uranium and “Eating Your Own”
By: Jack Dalton

I’ve been thinking about the article I read about the lawsuit some Vietnamese people brought against the U.S. government for the use of Agent Orange during the 10 year American War in Vietnam—20 million gallons of it—and thinking about it deeply. The entire issue of Agent Orange use and contamination is a real sore spot with me on a personal level, as it is with many of us who were in Vietnam and in contact with that “stuff.”

It comes as no big surprise to me that this government would petition the court to drop the case the Vietnamese have brought. Hell, this government still refuses to accept what AO did to us that wore this nation’s uniform let alone be willing to acknowledge what AO has done to millions of Vietnamese. If the courts were to not only hear, but decide the case the Vietnamese brought, that would open the floodgate of additional lawsuits by us vets of that war.

[IslamCity] In Search of More

2005-03-07 Thread Islahonline

From: Hanna
In Search of More

In Search of More
by Shaden Mohamed
When I was a child, Islam to me was just a code of rules. But as I matured,
Islam developed meaning for me. By the time I was a teenager, I came to
understand Islam as being more than just what I could and could not do. The
revelation that this was a way of life, was a very liberating feeling. The
Qu'ran is such a complex miracle, that it takes a lifetime of study to unravel
its depth and beauty.
Waking to Different Sounds
My trips to Egypt are usually in December (the time I have a holiday from
work and university) and fortunately it usually coincides with Islamic events
and celebrations. And so while in Egypt - when surrounded by people of my own
culture and beliefs - I learn more about a religion which has a power so
incredibly spiritual, that one needs only to hear the voice of the Sheikh at
prayer time to become overwhelmed.
Here in Sydney I wake up to the sound of a garbage truck every other day. To
be in Egypt and to wake up hearing the sound of the 'Adhaan' (the Sheikh calling
Muslims at prayer time), gives me the feeling that I am alive. The feeling that
I am on this earth for a higher purpose.
The Power of the Qur'an
While in Egypt I also learnt more about the Qu'ran's ability to heal and mend
those of sickness in mind and body. I also heard of the terrible things that
could be accomplished by those who exploited this power for the purpose of evil
(may Allah have mercy on their souls).
There was one encounter with the amazing power of the Qu'ran that I will
never forget. Whenever I visited my cousin's house, I would always have to knock
and stand back because of the Siamese cat she owned. It wasn't a normal cat -
'Boosy,' as she so lovingly called him, acted as if he owned the apartment
(clearly a result of my cousin's extravagant pampering and love).
To the rest of the family, however, he was known as 'Shahboor,' which
apparently means 'tough guy' and sometimes used to describe someone who was 'all
brawn and no brain' as the _expression_ goes. If I even looked at him the wrong
way, I would be scratched or attacked. I had seen this cat as a kitten, and he
would be waiting for me every few years when I visited. He grew bigger and got
meaner, to the point where I was scared to even visit my cousin unless he was
locked in a room or put in the balcony before I came over.
Shahboor - being a well-trained house pet - was only allowed outside the
apartment for 5 minutes at a time, when he would run up and down the stairs of
the building then come back inside for his treat.
On one particular day, Shahboor was let out while I was visiting, and my
cousin and I fell into deep conversation, forgetting all about Shahboor's
curfew. An hour or so later, my cousin jumped up from her seat - clearly her
memory had struck like lightning.
"Boosy! Oh no we forgot him!" she cried anxiously, as she ran to the door
(meanwhile I'm still assessing the word "we" - if something happened to him
would I be implicated?!)
"Boosy! Boosy!" cried my cousin, the sound of desperation now evident in her
quivering voice.
"It's ok, don’t worry, he's probably outside somewhere," I said calmly,
trying to reassure my frantic cousin.
"But he's never been alone out there on his own!" she cried.
"For goodness sakes he's a cat!" I laughed, thinking the situation was
slightly humorous.
After searching on foot for a few minutes, we decided to take the car and
drive around in the hopes of spotting a cat who my cousin was convinced would be
"eaten alive" by other cats or wild dogs. We drove for what seemed hours, but no
sign of her beloved Shahboor.
Depressed and heartbroken, my cousin finally agreed to go home and wait until
morning before she began the search again. Searching for Shahboor became my
nightmare. Here I was searching for a cat - who I was convinced was from the
planet Mars - instead of spending quality time at home with friends and family.
Eventually I broke the news to my cousin: "Listen, its been 3 days now, he isn't
coming back," I said firmly, trying to be as sympathetic as I could.
"No! He's just lost, we can still find him!" insisted my cousin, tears
welling in her eyes.
"Insha'Allah he will be fine," I continued. "Cats are very smart, especially
that Shahboor." My cousin took comfort in the compliment (despite me calling him
Shahboor) and so we spent another few days reminiscing about "the good times
with Boosy" and the "golden years with Boosy." My cousin was really and truly
grieving for this cat, who she clearly thought of as a younger sibling! A week
had gone by, but she could not let go.
One night I came over (expecting another session of Shahboor mourning no
doubt) and I saw my cousin with the Qu'ran in her hands. She was very focussed,
reading the same verse over and over again, not once looking up to greet me or
even acknowledge my presence. My auntie explained that she was reading a
spec
