Question:

What are the good righteous deeds that last that are mentioned in the aayah
(interpretation of the meaning):
But the good righteous deeds that last, are better with your Lord for rewards
and better in respect of hope[al-Kahf 18:46]?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Al-Shanqeeti (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

The scholarly opinions concerning the good righteous deeds that last all boil
down to one thing: they are all actions which are pleasing to Allaah, whether
we say that they are the five daily prayers, as was narrated from a group of
the salaf, including Ibn `Abbaas, Sa'eed ibn Jubayr, Abu Maysarah and `Umar ibn
Sharhabeel; or that it means [the phrases], Subhaan-Allaah wa'l-hamdu Lillaah
wa laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, wa Allaahu akbar, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa
Billaah il'Ali il-'Azeem (Glory be to Allaah, praise be to Allaah, there is no
god but Allaah, Allaah is most great and there is no power and no strength
except in Allaah, the Exalted, the Almighty). This is the view of the majority
of scholars. Indication of that was narrated in marfoo' ahaadeeth narrated from
Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri, Abu'l-Darda', Abu Hurayrah, al-Nu'maan ibn Basheer and
`Aa'ishah (may Allaah be pleased with them).

This phrase, the good righteous deeds that will last is a general phrase
which includes the five daily prayers and the five phrases mentioned above
(Subhaan-Allaah, etc), as well as other deeds which are pleasing to Allaah,
because they will abide and will not fade away or vanish like the adornments of
the life of this world, and because they are also done in the manner that
pleases Allaah…

Boycott Israel [IslamCity] How Iraq War Trillion Could Have Been Spent

2007-02-25 Thread Alan Border
“My Fellow Americans - Do NOT Worry About the COST of the Iraq War. After We
Defeat the ISLAMIC MORONS There - Be Rest ASSURED That We WILL - We Will ENSURE
That EVERY Dollar Spent Will Be PLUNDERED From the Muslim World One Way Or the
Other With COMPOUND INTEREST. The Price That We Are Paying In Terms of American
LIVES Is Very SMALL Compared to the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of Muslims That We
Are SLAUGHTERING in the Process. This Will SEND a Strong Message to the ISLAMIC
MORONS the World Over to NOT to MESS With America. God Bless America.” – GWB
How Iraq Trillion Could Have Been Spent

The Cost of the Iraq War: Can You Say $1,000,000,000,000?

  http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/WhosCounting/story?id=2844304page=1

Feb. 4, 2007 — The price tag for the Iraq War is now estimated at $700
billion in direct costs and perhaps twice that much when indirect expenditures
are included. Cost estimates vary — Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph
Stiglitz puts the total cost at more than $2 trillion — but let's be
conservative and say it's only $1 trillion (in today's dollars).
As a number of other commentators have recently written, this number — a 1
followed by 12 zeroes — can be put into perspective in various ways. Given how
large the war looms, it doesn't hurt to repeat this simple exercise with other
examples and in other ways.
  Different Monetary Units
There are many comparisons that might be made, and devising new governmental
monetary units is one way to make them.
Consider, for example, that the value of one EPA, the annual budget of the
Environmental Protection Agency, is about $7.5 billion. The cost of the Iraq
War is thus more than a century's worth of EPA spending (in today's dollars),
almost 130 EPAs, only a small handful of which would probably have been
sufficient to clean up Superfund sites around the country.
Or note that the annual budget for the Department of Education is about $55
billion, which puts the price tag for Iraq at about 18 EDs. Just a few of these
EDs would certainly have put muscle into the slogan No child left behind.
And since the annual budgets of the National Science Foundation and the
National Cancer Institute are $6 billion and $5 billion, respectively, the $1
trillion war cost is equivalent to 170 NSFs and 200 NCIs.
No doubt a couple of those NSFs could have been used to develop cheap hybrid
cars and alternative fuels. Scientific progress is by its nature unpredictable,
but some extra NCIs might also have lead to breakthroughs in cancer treatment.
The cost of the war can also be expressed as approximately 28 HS's, where HS,
the annual budget for the Department of Homeland Security, is about $35
billion. Really securing the ports and chemical plants would have only eaten up
a few of these HS's. A few more could have been usefully spent in Afghanistan.
One last and rather tiny governmental monetary unit functions almost as spare
change and has the ungainly acronym NHTSA. It stands for the annual budget of
the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, which is
approximately $670 million, or about two-thirds of $1 billion. The Iraq War has
cost about 1,500 NHTSA's, several of which could probably have reduced the more
than 40,000 Americans killed annually on our roads.
Of course, using these nonstandard monetary units isn't quite appropriate
when trying to come to terms with the more than 3,000 U.S. soldiers killed, the
20,000 wounded, and the number of Iraqis killed and wounded. The latter number
is staggering, whether you subscribe to the figures put out by Iraq Body Count
or those published in Lancet or to other even higher estimates.
Unlike death and serious injury, the medical costs for returning veterans,
their decreased productivity, and the depreciation of military equipment can be
quantified and constitute yet another huge indirect cost of the war.
  Other Measures
Another way to get at the $1 trillion cost of the Iraq War is to note that
the Treasury could have used the money to mail a check for more than $3,000 to
every man, woman and child in the United States. The latter alternative would
have an added benefit: Uniformly distributed and spent in this country, the
money would have provided an economic stimulus that the war expenditures have
not.
Alternatively, if the money was spent in an even more ecumenical way and a
global mailing list was available, the Treasury could have sent a check for
more than $150 to every human being on earth. The lives of millions of
children, who die from nothing more serious than measles, tetanus, respiratory
infections and diarrhea, could be saved, since these illnesses can be prevented
by $2 vaccines, $1 worth of antibiotics, or a 10-cent dose of oral rehydration
salts as well as the main but still very far from prohibitive cost of people to
administer the programs.
There are also more fanciful ways to induce a visceral feel

Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Fashion - the God of the youth

2007-02-25 Thread Showkat Ali
Fashion - the God of the youth

One of the most pressing concerns for a lot of Muslim youth today is the role
fashion plays in their lives. Far from being dictated by the laws of Allah,
many of us are instead slaves to fashion, an addiction that has the power to
ruin lives and our changes of winning the ultimate battle to gain entry to
paradise. Brother Showkot Ali discusses this idea in this month's fantastic
feature...

Clothing, we all have to wear something, even though on occasions we would
prefer to wear as little as possible especially when the weather is very hot,
which for the UK is a rarity. Some people would prefer if we wore nothing and
went back to nature, which they re-create in nudist colonies, some even go
topless when they sunbath and there are beaches reserved exclusively for that
purpose.

Many of us whose countries of origins are in the Indian sub-continent
understand the dilemma of having to buy two different wardrobes for each
country, Summer clothes for holidays abroad and winter clothes for life in the
west. The other problem we face is that clothes bought in the west can be worn
over there and regarded as being trendy and cool. While clothes bought from
back home are considered backwards and out of fashion when worn in the west.

So this thing called fashion has now cropped up and we need to understand
what it is and how it affects us, I say us because it affects me as well.

In the west unlike abroad you have to buy your clothes from a shop, whereas
in Pakistan or Bangladesh you can actually have your clothes made for u, such
as shirts, trousers etc after all the labour is cheap and we are all
millionaires once we times our pounds or dollars by 120 etc. Also if you wear
any clothes made in the west you are regarded as being trendy and in some
remote villages and areas you can actually be regarded as a trend setter with
your western clothes. Someone told I met when I was in Bangladesh that youth
used to wear a sheet wrapped around them called the longhi, but since the many
visits by Londonies (us westerners ) now they all wear tight jeans or trousers
especially when they visit the town otherwise they will be regarded as village
bumpkins and looked down upon.

But in the west you are very conscious about what you wear, we often hear
about this thing called In and Out in relation to clothes and we are
all very careful to be in and not out, coz the consequences are horrific, worse
than Jade Goodey on a bad day. Newspapers and magazines have sections where
these things are discussed at great length.

So in order to be in we need to carefully and diligently follow and observe
what the latest top model, actress and singer is wearing, for boys its what the
top footballer, actor, sportsman, or singer is wearing.

It's not just about wearing nice clothes and looking hot but also the label
and brand name is also very important. So brands like Nike, Adidas, Prada,
Fila, Nokia Is the in thing but they come at a price which is beyond most of
the youth's budget. So what to do if you don't have rich parents? Getting a job
and doing things on the side, illegal things like selling copied cds, computer
games etc help to raise the funds for an expensive past time of keeping in with
fashion which is worse than a drug or alcohol addiction. For some petty crime
is the answer mugging younger kids, extorting money, shop lifting, selling
drugs and stolen mobiles, and car stereos is the answer.

It's funny and sad that even inside the masjid shoe racks have signs telling
us not to bring expensive trainers to the masjid for fear that they might be
stolen and to keep valuables safe. SubhanAllah if we are not safe from theft
inside the houses of Allah then where are we safe? And it does happen. I once
had a pair of new shoes stolen from one masjid and I'm not insinuating that it
was the people praying there who did it. Someone told me that back home there
are people who take an old pair of sandals when they go to pray but when they
leave they take the most expensive and latest pair with them. A friend came up
with an idea to prevent shoes and sandals from being stolen, leave one pair in
one rack and the other pair in another rack, thieves will not steal one shoe or
sandal, it's the matching pair they seek.I actually tried this and it works.

So this fashion craze amongst the youth does lead many to crime in order to
feed this expensive habit and conform to society after all who wants to be
viewed by friends and peers as being the sad person who buys his clothes form
jumble sales and second hand shops or even Tescos or the market.

For some who cant keep up or afford the latest gear fakes have become a very
big growth area, where you can buy what your mates are wearing plus the label
for a fraction of the price and even the experts cannot tell a fake from the
real thing.

  This is illegal but

NEW DELHI: Controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen's visa has been
extended by another six months till August 17 this year by the Union Home
Ministry. MHA sources on Thursday said the six-month residential permit granted
to her was due to expire on February 17 and it has now been extended by another
six months.
Nasreen, who had applied to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office
(FRRO) in December for a six-month extension of her visa, is interested in
citizenship or permanent resident status in India. Initially, Nasreen had been
granted a one-year residential permit in 2005. Presently staying in Kolkata on
a Swedish passport, Nasreen has been living in exile for 12 years.
She had to move to Sweden after she invoked the ire of fundamentalists in
Bangladesh with her book 'Lajja (Shame)' in 1993, and had to leave Dhaka after
a 'fatwa' was issued against her. Besides 'Lajja', Nasreen's four
autobiographical books are banned in Bangladesh on grounds of containing
anti-Islamic sentiments.
In November 2003, the West Bengal government had banned the sale of her book
'Dwikhandito' but the ban was lifted by the Calcutta High Court in September
2004.
Meanwhile, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Thursday urged Union Home
Minister Shivraj Patil to immediately rescind the order extending Taslima's
residential permit. Alleging that Taslima's writings were 'offensive' and
'sacrilegious', an IUML release said here that the party has lodged strong
protest with the Union Home Ministry.

ISLAMABAD, 21 February 2007 — A suspected militant yesterday shot dead
Punjab’s minister for social welfare while she was about to address a meeting
in Gujranwala. Fayyaz Chattha, the district administrator of Gujranwala, told
Arab News a serial killer shot the minister, Zille Huma Usman, wounding her
seriously. She succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Officials said the attacker killed her because she was not wearing proper
Muslim dress. Huma, 35, was known as a women’s rights activist and had
previously promoted a mini-marathon involving women runners that sparked riots
in 2005.

“She was shot dead while at a meeting with party workers,” provincial Law
Minister Raja Basharat told AFP. Police said the attacker identified as
Mohammad Sarwar in his 40s, wearing a cloak, approached Huma as party activists
threw rose petals at her then took out his pistol and shot her in the temple in
cold blood. “He killed her because she was not observing the Islamic code of
dress.

She was also campaigning for emancipation of women,” local police officer
Nazir Ahmad said. “The suspect is an extremist and he has a history of
targeting woman whom he believed to be immoral.” Huma died in hospital while
her killer, a stonemason, was arrested.

The man was arrested by police in 2002 for killing two women who were
prostitutes but he was acquitted due to lack of evidence, Ahmad said. “He did
not represent any militant organization but he was a fanatic on his own.”

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz paid tribute to Huma, describing her as a
committed and dedicated politician. “During her short span as minister, she
took several steps for the welfare of the people of Punjab,” he said. Officials
said Huma had joined the pro-Musharraf Pakistan Muslim League party after being
elected in 2002 and backed Musharraf’s policy of “enlightened moderation”
designed to tackle extremism.

Riots erupted when police stopped armed activists from disrupting the race.
She worked as parliamentary secretary for planning and development from August
2003 to November 2006 and had been appointed to her current post on Dec. 1,
2006.

Another Minister Escapes Bid on Life

Gunmen attacked the convoy of a minister in Balochistan yesterday but he
escaped unhurt. Minister for States and Frontier Regions Sardar Yar Mohammad
Rind came under attack when he was traveling with a police escort near his
village in Lando area, 150 km east of the capital, Quetta.

“The attackers fired at the convoy with automatic weapons. Three cars were
damaged but no one was hurt,” said the mayor of the area, Sardar Khan Rind. He
said it was too early to say who was behind the attack. Suspicion is bound to
fall on Baloch nationalist rebels, fighting for more autonomy and a greater
share of profits from the region’s natural resources. They frequently attack
gas pipelines and government and military targets in their campaign.

Earlier yesterday, suspected rebels blew up a gas pipeline on the outskirts
of Quetta, cutting supplies to four districts near the city and a 95 MW city
power plant. Supplies might be restored to some areas within 24 hours,
officials said.

  Militants Behead Afghan Refugee

Suspected pro-Taleban militants in a region on the Afghan border killed an
Afghan refugee they accused of being a US spy, a district government official
said yesterday.

The beheaded body of the refugee was dumped by a road on Monday in Saidgey
village in the North Waziristan region, a hotbed of support for militancy. A
note found near the body read: “Whoever spies for America will meet the same
fate,” said the district official, who declined to be identified as he was not
authorized to speak to the media.

Watching the Bush team wrestle with Iran, North Korea and Iraq reminds me of
something that used to be said of the Reagan administration: The right hand
never knew what the far right hand was doing.

In fact, my bet is that when the inside history of the Bush team is written,
we will discover that, contrary to its carefully managed image of a disciplined
core operating from consistent, conservative principles, it has actually been
one of the most internally divided administrations — ever.

“Resolving the contradiction in Washington will sharpen the contradiction in
Tehran,” Mr. Litwak argued. “Taking regime change off the table in America will
put behavior change on the table in Iran.”

I guess we should be thankful that Mr. Bush is trying to fix some of his
mistakes, but we have paid a huge, unnecessary price for his learning curve.
Which is why it’s always best to get it right the first time. The best golfers
never take mulligans, and the best presidents never need them.

  Question
I am writing in regard to the movement known as Tabligh, which has been
active in India over the years. They are also known as Wahhabis and sometime
addressed as the number 24, although what this number signifies remains a
mystery to me. They have their own mosques where they do not use microphones
for prayer and they advocate many other things in the name of Islam. When I
visited my home country recently, my father told me that they frequently visit
him and that arguing with them is futile. He feels confused by some of the
ideas they try to disseminate. May I say that in my parents’ home, we never
visit any shrine, attend death anniversaries, etc., but we give Fatihah and
Niyaz and celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
When I told my family that I have stopped these practices as well, they started
to call me Wahhabi and 24. Another hot issue is that they claim that saying Ya
Rasoolullah is prohibited. May I request your explanation of all
such matters what is permissible and what is not?

  Answer
I have never thought that the Tabligh and the Wahhabis movements could be
ever confused or thought to form one group or movement. Their ideas and methods
are wide apart. But perhaps this is part of the confusion that the reader’s
father has felt.

Tabligh is a movement dedicated to carry the message of Islam to the farthest
corners of the world. Its members travel and speak to people about Islam. Many
scholars have expressed disagreement with some of their methods, but they are
certainly sincere people, who wish to serve Islam, even though they may be
mistaken in some respects.

There is no such thing as Wahhabis movement, or doctrine, or group. The name
is derived from a great reformer, Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab, who lived in
Arabia over 200 years ago. He was a scholar of clear knowledge and strong
determination. He devoted the efforts to purging the faith of the people from
all elements that are alien to the pure Islamic faith, as preached by the
Prophet, peace be upon him, and practiced by his companions.

He launched an unwavering attack on superstitions and erroneous beliefs that
crept into people’s minds during a long period of ignorance that saw the
majority of Muslim people illiterate. Because people initially resent being
told that they have been following wrong ideas, they coin nicknames for those
who tell them that. Hence the name ‘Wahhabis’ came into being. Perhaps it is
also the reason for the appellation 24, which I have never heard before.

Let me say this to you: every thing advocated by Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab
aimed to get people to return to the Islamic faith in its purest form. This
applies to the celebrations people do at so-called shrines, which are no more
than the graves of men who are thought to be saints. The whole idea of
‘sainthood’ is alien to Islamic teachings. It also applies to wearing charms,
seeking mediation of dead people, celebrating various occasions, etc. The
practice known in India [ Pakistan] as Fatihah is also an innovation that has
no basis in Islam. I do not know what is meant by the expression ‘Niyaz’. I
cannot pass an opinion on it.

One thing that he emphasizes is that we must never address our appeals or
prayer to anyone other than God Himself. That applies to the Prophet, peace be
upon him, as well.

On the Day of Judgement the Prophet, peace be upon him, will be granted a
special favor of interceding on behalf of his followers, but that is only then.
As for life in this world, he cannot be of benefit to us, other than for having
taught us the right faith and shown us how to follow it. But he cannot mediate
with God now on our behalf. Hence to appeal to him, as people do when they say,
Ya Rasoolullah, is a form of polytheism, making him a partner with God. He made
no claim to such partnership and he would be the first to reject it. It is only
to God that we should appeal. The word ‘Ya’ is a form of appeal or calling upon
someone.

Having said that, it remains for me to say that some of the things that the
reader mentions as practiced by those people may not be right.

Their refusal to use microphones is one such thing. A microphone and public
address system is a machine, which may be used for the very good purpose of
making the call to prayer. It is used in the Haram in Makkah and in the

The Myth of Muslim Support for Terror

  By Kenneth Ballen
  February 23, 2007

The common enemy is violence and terrorism, not Muslims any more than
Christians or Jews.

WASHINGTON - Those who think that Muslim countries and pro-terrorist
attitudes go hand-in-hand might be shocked by new polling research: Americans
are more approving of terrorist attacks against civilians than any major Muslim
country except for Nigeria.

The survey, conducted in December 2006 by the University of Maryland's
prestigious Program on International Public Attitudes, shows that only 46
percent of Americans think that bombing and other attacks intentionally aimed
at civilians are never justified, while 24 percent believe these attacks are
often or sometimes justified.

Contrast those numbers with 2006 polling results from the world's
most-populous Muslim countries - Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria.
Terror Free Tomorrow, the organization I lead, found that 74 percent of
respondents in Indonesia agreed that terrorist attacks are never justified;
in Pakistan, that figure was 86 percent; in Bangladesh, 81 percent.

Do these findings mean that Americans are closet terrorist sympathizers?

Hardly. Yet, far too often, Americans and other Westerners seem willing
to draw that conclusion about Muslims. Public opinion surveys in the United
States and Europe show that nearly half of Westerners associate Islam with
violence and Muslims with terrorists. Given the many radicals who commit
violence in the name of Islam around the world, that's an understandable
polling result.

But these stereotypes, affirmed by simplistic media coverage and many
radicals themselves, are not supported by the facts - and they are detrimental
to the war on terror. When the West wrongly attributes radical views to all of
the world's 1.5 billion Muslims, it perpetuates a myth that has the very real
effect of marginalizing critical allies in the war on terror.

Indeed, the far-too-frequent stereotyping of Muslims serves only to
reinforce the radical appeal of the small minority of Muslims who peddle hatred
of the West and others as authentic religious practice.

Terror Free Tomorrow's 20-plus surveys of Muslim countries in the past
two years reveal another surprise: Even among the minority who indicated
support for terrorist attacks and Osama bin Laden, most overwhelmingly approved
of specific American actions in their own countries. For example, 71 percent of
bin Laden supporters in Indonesia and 79 percent in Pakistan said they thought
more favorably of the United States as a result of American humanitarian
assistance in their countries - not exactly the profile of hard-core terrorist
sympathizers. For most people, their professed support of terrorism/bin Laden
can be more accurately characterized as a kind of protest vote against
current US foreign policies, not as a deeply held religious conviction or even
an inherently anti- American or anti-Western view.

In truth, the common enemy is violence and terrorism, not Muslims any
more than Christians or Jews. Whether recruits to violent causes join gangs in
Los Angeles or terrorist cells in Lahore, the enemy is the violence they exalt.

Our surveys show that not only do Muslims reject terrorism as much if not
more than Americans, but even those who are sympathetic to radical ideology can
be won over by positive American actions that promote goodwill and offer real
hope.

America's goal, in partnership with Muslim public opinion, should be to
defeat terrorists by isolating them from their own societies. The most
effective policies to achieve that goal are the ones that build on our common
humanity. And we can start by recognizing that Muslims throughout the world
want peace as much as Americans do.

nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to finding effective policies
that win popular support away from global terrorists.

Polls show anti-American feelings at all time high in Muslim countries

Respondents indicate a deep suspicion of US motives, and religion has
little to do with radicalization of Muslim views.

Two new polls, conducted separately in 2005 and 2006, show that
anti-American feeling in Arab nations is at an all-time high.

The surveys, carried out by Zogby International and the Gallup Center for
Muslim Studies, show that it's not just that feelings are running against the
US, it's that Arabs and Muslims are giving up on [the US] - on our ability to
make good decisions, to solve problems, to play the role of honest broker.

Rice’s Middle East visit: Bullying and intimidation dressed up as diplomacy
By Jean Shaoul
22 February 2007 US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s much trumpeted
meeting on Monday, February 19 with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and
Mahmoud Abbas was a calculated public humiliation of the Palestinian president.

Far from being a new diplomatic initiative designed to bring about a just
resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Rice used the occasion to
dictate Washington and Jerusalem’s terms for any future Palestinian government.

Following separate talks with Olmert and Abbas, the three met, without aides
other than Rice’s Arabic translator, in a West Jerusalem hotel before
adjourning to Rice’s suite.

Rice told the Palestinians in no uncertain terms that Abbas’s proposals for a
new Palestinian government did not meet with her approval, the concessions
offered by Hamas were totally inadequate and until the Hamas government
completely renounced its programme, no Palestinian state was on offer. She made
clear that the only terms acceptable to the Bush administration were the total
suppression of all opposition to Israel’s plans for a Greater Israel, based on
the permanent retention of its settlements in the West Bank.

The talks lasted a mere two hours and ended with a terse 90-second statement
from Rice. Abbas confirmed his position as a US puppet by dutifully lining up
alongside Olmert to endorse her remarks.

Rice said that the three had discussed the changed political circumstances
arising from the proposal for a Hamas-Fatah government; the meeting had been
“useful and productive,” and she would be back in Jerusalem “soon.” She left
without taking any questions from reporters and there were no announcements
from either the Israeli or Palestinian leaders.

A Hamas spokesman set the record straight. Ismail Radwan said the meeting was
a failure and that its purpose was to put pressure on Abbas to pull out of the
proposed National Unity government and take on Hamas. “Rice did not succeed in
pressuring President Abbas to withdraw from the unity government. We call on
the US administration to respect the Palestinian people’s will and recognise
the [Hamas-led] government and open a dialogue,” he said.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of an agreement brokered by Saudi
King Abdullah in Mecca between Hamas, led by Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, and
Fatah led by President Mahmoud Abbas, that were on the point of outright civil
war, to form a National Unity government.

The electoral victory of Hamas in January 2006 had led, on the insistence of
the US and Israel, to an economic boycott and isolation of the Palestinian
Authority (PA). The Quartet, the US, European Union, Russia and the United
Nations, cut off all direct aid to the PA, bringing the Palestinian economy to
a halt and its people to the brink of starvation, while Israel illegally
withheld the tax and customs it collects on behalf of the PA.

Israel’s demands on Abbas to suppress all Palestinian resistance to its
illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories and its all-out war on Gaza
last summer only served to increase the tensions between the rival parties.

The Mecca agreement, which Abbas announced on February 9 after two days of
talks, was widely welcomed within Palestine. It follows his failed attempt to
mount a political coup at Washington’s behest last December, when he said he
would dissolve the Hamas government and call new presidential and parliamentary
elections. That unconstitutional move threatened a civil war and was unlikely
to lead to an election victory for Fatah.

While this latest arrangement is a reflection of Abbas’s unwillingness to
take on Hamas with either guns or at the polls, it achieves the same ends: the
unseating of an elected government. The Hamas government has now resigned and
Haniyeh has five weeks to form a new National Unity government, which he will
head, as set out under the agreement.

The aim is to end the factional fighting between the two parties, terminate
any militant resistance to Israel and secure the international recognition that
will restore economic aid to the PA. The Saudi Kingdom has pledged $1 billion
to counter Iranian and Shiite influence and restore its own position in the
region.

Hamas will cede six cabinet posts to Fatah and four to so-called
independents, including the most powerful portfolios and the only ones with any
real power: interior, finance and foreign relations.

It made major concessions to Fatah and Israel’s key demands: the acceptance
of Israel’s right to exist, the renunciation of violence, the acceptance of

Why the Anglican Communion matters
*

By Dr Rowan Williams
Friday, 23 February 2007

In some people's eyes, keeping the Anglican Communion together as a
worldwide institution looks like prolonging the life of a dysfunctional or
abusive marriage; isn't it more honest and humane to head for the divorce
courts?

Why should we be mortgaged to other people's prejudices - if we're liberal -
or other people's irresponsibility - if we're traditionalist? Isn't what
matters the life and vigour, and indeed the integrity, of the Church on our
doorstep?

There were moments in the meeting of Anglican leaders in Tanzania when I
guess most of those present felt a bit like this. The fact that they weren't
prepared simply to leave things there suggests, though, that more needs to
be said. There remains a strong belief that this kind of worldwide Christian
institution means we all agree to take responsibility for each other in some
way, and to recognise that none of us has ultimate interests and concerns
that are exclusively local or personal.

So what is the problem at the moment? When Anglicans in America decided, in
2003, to appoint as a bishop someone in an openly gay partnership, the
widespread reaction was that there hadn't yet been the kind of discussion in
the worldwide setting that might convince others of the rightness, in
principle, of blessing same-sex relationships - and that this discussion
needed to happen before anyone decided whether an active gay person might be
a candidate for being a bishop. Not too surprisingly, most in the Communion
felt that the conclusion had come before the argument.

This created two sorts of difficulty. One was the question of limits. For
most Anglicans, questions about sexual ethics belonged in that category of
teaching that was not up for negotiation as a result of cultural variation
or social development. As with the central doctrines of the Creed and the
biblical world view, people could only say: This isn't mine to give away.

They needed more than an assurance that it had been thought about in America
and that a lot of people there had concluded it was all right. The other
question followed on: if an issue just might be in the not mine to give
away category, how did the Church as a whole decide whether it really was
in that category or not? How did it decide as a Church, not as a
conglomerate of local independent bodies? And if it couldn't decide as a
Church, how could it carry on talking with other worldwide Christian bodies
on the same foundations?

Not a wholly new question: the often bitter controversies over women's
ordination had already raised some of these matters. But at least on that, a
conviction had emerged that it was possible to treat it as something people
could disagree about and still leave intact the basics of common faith. For
a variety of reasons, this current question has not felt like that for many.
And - worst of all in some ways - the possibility of detailed and patient
scrutiny of the underlying question about sexual ethics was rather derailed
by the feeling that the outcome had been decided in advance by one group in
the Communion. Trust suffered badly.

To digress for just a moment: one of the hardest things in all this has been
to keep insisting on the absolute moral imperative of combating bigotry and
violence against gay people, and the need to secure appropriate civic and
legal protection for couples who have chosen to share their lives. These are
different matters from whether the Church has the freedom to bless same-sex
unions. A negative or agnostic answer to this latter question is frequently
heard as a negative attitude to the imperatives of care and respect - and
sometimes that perception is sadly accurate, judging from the postbag that
arrives here. Yet they are different, and quite a lot of Christians know it
and try to act accordingly.

What happened in Tanzania in the last week or so represents an effort to
define what could restore trust - all round, since the point is made that
interventions from overseas in the American Church also have destructive
effects in some ways. What has come to be called the Listening Process was
discussed and strongly affirmed the continuing work on finding means for
homosexual men and women in the Communion to speak about their experience in
a safe environment.

This work has not been restricted to the West, and shows surprising signs of
vigour. The outline of a covenant document for local Anglican Churches
suggests ways in which we could commit ourselves to a future process where
consultation was fully built in. The requests to the American Church for
further clarification and a moratorium on certain actions while the covenant
process is going forward are essentially requests to show that their desire
to stay with the Communion

and I guarantee a home in the middle of Jannah

Commentary: Withdrawal from one's right in order to end a dispute
is a manly act of great merit. Likewise, this Hadith tells us that a man
should avoid telling a lie even in a light vein. If he gives great importance
to the rules of the Shari`ah (Islamic Law) and the Commandments of Allah
and His Prophet (PBUH), he will definitely refrain from telling a lie even in
a
chat session or just for the sake of joke. Usually, people don't mind if one
tells a lie in a jocular mood, rather some will perhaps approve it.
Yet, Allah disapproves of even the harmless or trivial form of falsehood
and commands His slaves to keep away from it. From all considerations,
however, moral excellence carries immense weight. Because no wrong
or evil thing can be shunned without it. In other words, moral excellence
  surpasses all forms of goodness.

Apart from this News report, some critics were discussing that Dr Yunus is
going ahead according to the blue print of the West! Some says, those people
are jealous, while others say it is possible. I think, natives are more
aware and their eyes are open. They should not allow any foreign influence,
though it seems not possible. While all politicians were failed to get rid
of the corruption, let them try with someone new. No one is perfect anywhere
and not expected. It is better if the country's name won't appear on the top
again on the corrupted country's list.

I remember, last year, there was a discussion where people were discussing
how to tackle corruption in Bangladesh and they were trying to find any way
out. One person said, the West is now fed up donating that country, they
need to find some people who would work for both that country and for the
West! Bangladesh (including West Bengal of India) was a very rich country,
many Western countries went there to grab their share and most of those jobs
were done with the help of traitors. Despite known and driven traitors there
are so many remain hidden and just waiting for a good chance. Anyway, best

Muhammad Yunus - last year's Nobel peace prize winner known as the banker
to the poor - launched his political career last night with a new party and
a pledge to end the bitter infighting and corruption that has riddled
Bangladesh.

Today I formally announce my party Nagarik Shakti [Citizens' Power], Mr
Yunus told reporters. I can't keep myself away from politics. It's high
time to do something.

Earlier in an open letter, Mr Yunus sought the support of Bangladeshis to
launch the new party, whose slogan is Bangladesh go forward.

The microcredit pioneer, whose work began by lending tiny amounts to the
world's neediest people three decades ago, is a political novice. He said
his party would contest the next parliamentary polls, whose date has yet to
be announced after they were cancelled last month by the military.

Bangladesh, a predominately Muslim nation of 150 million people and one of
the poorest countries in the world, is under a state of emergency, imposed
last month with little protest - from either the public or foreign
governments. The reason is that for the past 16 years power has swung between
two feuding parties, whose politicians have lined their pockets.

The army has led a crackdown on crime and corruption, which saw 40,000
people arrested last month. These measures did not unnerve the electorate
who have got used to chaos. Crippling strikes and riots left 45 people dead
last year.

Mr Yunus's call for a new politics will strike a chord, say analysts, with
many voters weary of the bitter rivalry between the Awami League's Sheikh
Hasina and BNP's Begum Khaleda Zia, both relatives of former assassinated
leaders who haven't spoken to each other in years.

[Mr Yunus] will open up a new political force because there are many people
who have become disillusioned by the two main parties. In making corruption
an issue he will force parties to purge their own ranks, said Mahfuz Anam,
editor of Bangladesh's Daily Star.

Although Mr Yunus lacks a political organisation, he has instant name
recognition in Bangladesh. A social entrepreneur who believes that business
can be good for the poor, his Grameen bank now lends $1bn to 7m people -
almost all are poor women.

He also founded Grameen Phone, which has 10m customers and is the largest
mobile phone company in the country. Mr Yunus's gift for propaganda was on
display last November when he brought French football legend Zinedine Zidane
to Bangladesh to promote his latest venture - cheap yoghurt for the poor.

These businesses have been rooted in Bangladesh's 78,000 villages, giving Mr
Yunus' new party an instant political base. The 67-year-old economist also
has a track record in alleviating poverty. Muhammad Yunus is not only a
dreamer but a doer, said Mr Anam. What he lacks is workers right now on
the ground.

Whether Mr Yunus can build a new political force will depend on whether
people heed his call to form grassroot committees in villages to support his
new party. Analysts say he has a year to build support before an election is
likely to be called.

Officials say it will take that long before a nationwide ballot can be held
because a decade of poll-rigging has left Bangladesh with no usable voter
list. The army plans

  Fatima Ruling Condemned by Ex-Minister

  Maha Akeel, Arab News
  http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1section=0article=92470d=21m=2y=2007

JEDDAH, 21 February 2007 — The ruling that upheld a judge’s decision to
divorce a couple in absentia at the request of the wife’s half-brothers has
been condemned by a former deputy minister of justice.

In an interview with Arab News, Fadl Mehdar Aqeel said that the case pits
Shariah law against tribal traditions and prejudices. He said Saudi courts
should be deferring to Islamic principles when it comes to such conflicts
rather than siding with tribal traditions that transcend Muslim identity.

“This ruling in Fatima’s case is a big mistake,” he said, referring to the
34-year-old woman who has languished in a prison in Dammam since last summer
because she refuses to return to the custody of the family members who
intervened on her three-year marriage to Mansour Al-Timani, 37. “This is a
racist and ignorant decision.”

Since the Jan. 21 appeals-court ruling upholding a court ruling that divorced
Fatima and Mansour at the request of Fatima’s half brothers on the grounds of
Mansour’s “inferior” tribal lineage, public opinion seems to be in favor of the
couple. Columnists, letters to the editor, and callers on debate programs seem
overwhelmingly against the family that brought legal action against the couple
and the justice system that affirmed their effort to break up the marriage.
Further complicating the matter is the fact that Fatima and Mansour have two
children: A two-year-old girl is in Mansour’s custody while the infant boy
lives in prison with his mother.

Unfortunately, Fatima’s case is not the only such case in courts. Newspapers
report similar stories with brothers, half brothers, cousins, uncles and even
tribal chiefs filing court cases demanding divorces of women due to unequal
tribal affiliations.

“I have heard of 19 other cases that are at different stages of court
proceedings from Internet forums and speaking to lawyers,” said writer and
activist Hussein Shobokshy. “The issue is much more serious than civil
liberties and women’s rights. This is an infringement on God-given rights and a
suspension of Islamic laws. Shariah law should be above tribal codes.” He said
that if this kind of judgment is not prohibited, it could have other
consequences. “This ruling created an institutionalized caste system. It could
officially legitimize discrimination in other things such as applying for jobs
and promotions,” said Shobokshy.

“How can we reconcile this ruling with a previous statement by the minister
of justice that a nation’s strength is in its judicial system?” asked Fuad
Engawi in his column in Al-Madinah newspaper last week.

Women in the Kingdom, expatriate and Saudi alike, have expressed their fear
that this ruling poses a threat to the security and unity of families. The
issue regarding the autonomy that husbands and wives have in relation to their
in-laws and blood relatives is on trial.

Throughout his 40-year career in the Ministry of Justice, former Deputy
Minister Aqeel said he has never come across such a ruling that made its way
through the appeals process. The reason, he says, is that Shariah law forbids
such tribal meddling in the sanctity of marriage.

“It is forbidden in Islam to separate a married couple for any reason,” he
told Arab News. Aqeel cites the fact that Fatima’s late father approved the
marriage and that the couple has children as a compelling reason to reverse the
ruling. (The father has since passed away, leaving the power of attorney and,
more important, custody rights over Fatima in the event of her separation from
her husband, to his male children. Fatima remains in prison because she has
refused to return to the custody of these male relatives.)

“What could be more damaging than shattering a family and disrupting the life
and well-being of children by separating their parents?” said Aqeel, who
referred to the saying of the Prophet Muhammad, (pbuh) for guidance on the
matter.

The Prophet delivered a message of equality among Muslims and against the
pre-Islamic traditions. There are many references in the Holy Qur’an and the
Hadith that forbids discrimination, and there are stories from the Prophet’s
time illustrating that the only criteria are the person’s religion (Muslim
women can only marry Muslims, but Muslim men can marry women of other faiths)
and good character.

According to Aqeel, the only way to overrule the appeal’s court

Lack of a sense of culture for a religious scholar is more dangerous than a
lack of blood cells for a weak patient. A caller to Allah has to read about
virtually everything. He or she has to read the books of belief and the books
of atheism, the books of Sunnah and the books of philosophy. In short, to read
about all schools of human thought is how one gains experience in life.

Do we want the Muslim people to leave their going-around- in-circles, their
dependence, backwardness, and poverty? Then we show clearly which path will
take us to that goal: establishing Islam in every field in the personal life of
the individual, in family and society…and the establishment of a unique Islamic
community from Morocco to Indonesia.

  Bediüzzaman Said Nursi
There is an apparent burden in worship, but there is an ease and lightness in
its meaning that defies description. For in the prescribed prayers the
worshipper declares, I bear witness that there is no god but God. That is to
say, he finds the door of a treasury of mercy in everything because he is
believing and saying, There is no Creator and Provider other than Him. Harm
and benefit are in His hand. He is both All-Wise; He does nothing in vain, and
He is All-Compassionate; His bounty and mercy are abundant. And he knocks on
the door with his supplication. Moreover, he sees that everything is subjugated
to the command of his own Sustainer, so he takes refuge in Him. He places his
trust in Him and relies on Him, and is fortified against every disaster; his
belief gives him complete confidence.

America needs to understand Islam, because this is one religion that erases
from its society, the Race problem!

Wasting time and effort in investigating trivial matters that will not lead to
action is prohibited in Islam. This category includes debating minute aspects
of rulings in cases which have never occurred, investigating the meaning of the
Qur'anic verses which are still beyond the scope of human knowledge (the
mutashabihaat verses), and differentiating between the companions (Sahabah) of
the Prophet or investigating the instances of disagreement that took place
among them. Every sahabi (may Allah be pleased with them all) has the honour
and distinction of being a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon
him), and to each is the recompense of his motives.

Through patience and poverty one attains leadership in religion. The seeker of
Truth needs the will that inspires him and pushes him upward and knowledge that
leads and guides him.

Our heart beats approximately 67 times a minute, every time it wants to beat,
it asks Allah, am I permitted to beat? If Allah says yes, it beats and if He
says no then the life ends.

In the scale of God, the true weight is the weight of faith; in God's market
the only commodity in demand is the commodity of faith. The highest form of
triumph is the victory of soul over matter, the victory of belief over pain,
and the victory of faith over persecution.

Islam has not lost its intrinsic values and it is as dynamic today as it was
yesterday. Only, the people have lost the understanding of Islam, and they are
not conscious of its superiority over other ideologies.

You must present a model and an ideal way of life which may make them (the
non-Muslims) interested in studying Islaam, and eager to know the source of
your Guidance which has enabled you to follow a particular way of life and
worldview.
