> But inheriting the SingleColumnValueFilter doesn't give any benefits for I
> have to rewrite the codes.
> I think all private fields and methods could turn into protected mode.

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-7104) HBase includes multiple versions of netty: 3.5.0; 3.2.4; 3.2.2

nkeywal commented on HBASE-7104:

I suppose it works when you previously built hadoop 1.1 locally. I have the
same error if I delete my repository.
I don't why it happens this way.

With this, I have:
[INFO] +-
org.apache.hbase:hbase-hadoop1-compat:test-jar:tests:0.95-SNAPSHOT:test
[INFO] +- io.netty:netty:jar:3.5.9.Final:compile

[INFO] +- org.apache.hadoop:hadoop-client:jar:2.0.2-alpha:compile

org.apache.hadoop:hadoop-mapreduce-client-app:jar:2.0.2-alpha:compile
[INFO] |  |  \- org.jboss.netty:netty:jar:3.2.4.Final:compile

So we still have the 3.2.4 when we build HBase, but as it comes only from the
compat hadoop 2 module, let's say it's acceptable for now (I hope it will be
changed in hadoop itself)...

Sorry for the mess...

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-7155) Excessive usage of InterruptedException where it can't be thrown

2012-11-13 Thread JIRA
Daniel Gómez Ferro created HBASE-7155:
-

 Summary: Excessive usage of InterruptedException where it can't be
thrown
 Key: HBASE-7155
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-7155
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Daniel Gómez Ferro

RootRegionTracker.getRootRegionLocation() declares that it can throw an
InterruptedException, but it can't. This exception is rethrown by many other
functions reaching the HBaseAdmin API.

If we remove the throws statement from the HBaseAdmin API libraries already
compiled will work fine, but if the user is trying to catch an
InterruptedException around one of those methods the compiler will complain.

Should we clean this up?

> RootRegionTracker.getRootRegionLocation() declares that it can throw an

> If we remove the throws statement from the HBaseAdmin API libraries already

> This came up after the following mail in dev list
> 'infinite loop of RS_ZK_REGION_SPLIT on .94.2'.
> The following is the reason for the problem
> The following steps happen
> -> Initially the parent region P1 starts splitting.
> -> The split is going on normally.
> -> Another split starts at the same time for the same region P1. (Not sure
> why this started).
> -> Rollback happens seeing an already existing node.
> -> This node gets deleted in rollback and nodeDeleted Event starts.
> -> In nodeDeleted event the RIT for the region P1 gets deleted.
> -> Because of this there is no region in RIT.
> -> Now the first split gets over. Here the problem is we try to transit the
> node to SPLITTING to SPLIT. But the node even does not exist.
> But we don take any action on this. We think it is successful.
> -> Because of this SplitRegionHandler never gets invoked.

Yes, Stack and Jimmy, it is a failure when running the UT with non-SUN JDK(like
IBM). This issue is due to different implementation of ConcurrentHashMap and
ArraryList between different JVM vendors(like IBM jdk, SUN jdk). The solution
is to modify src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/util/ClassSize.java, and set
CONCURRENT_HASHMAP and ARRAYLIST to the right size with the right JVM vendor. I
have fixed it with a patch, and have tested it with UT successfully, and also
run full UT to ensure the patch doesn't cause any new issue. I can work with
fixing this JIRA if it is needed.

[jira] [Updated] (HBASE-3869) RegionServer metrics - add read and write byte-transfer statistics

> It would be beneficial to have the "data transfer weight" of reads and writes
> per region server.
> HBASE-3647 split out the read/write metric requests from the uber-"request"
> metric - which is great.
> But there isn't a notion of "data transfer weight" and this is why it's
> important: the read metrics are effectively RPC-based. Thus, with a scan
> caching of 500, there is 1 RPC call every 500 rows read (and 1 'read' metric
> increment). And this metric doesn't indicate how much data is being
> transferred (e.g., a read with 50 attributes will probably cost a lot more
> than a read with 5 attributes).

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-6787) Convert RowProcessorProtocol to protocol buffer service

2012-11-13 Thread Gary Helmling (JIRA)

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-6787?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=13496394#comment-13496394
 ]

Gary Helmling commented on HBASE-6787:
--

Sorry for the delay in the review. Overall this looks good to me, but I'm
still trying to think through the client usage.

The one thing eating at me is that between this and the ColumnInterpreter stuff
for AggregateService, we seem to be working towards a common interface for the
user code serialization/deserialization bits:

Request ser/de:
{code:java}
public ByteString rowProcessorSpecificData() throws IOException {}

public void initialize(ByteString bytes) throws IOException {}
{code}

Response ser/de:
{code:java}
public ByteString getProtoForResult(T t) {}

public T parseResponseAsResultType(byte[] response) {}
{code}

Given the very similar pattern here, does it make sense to try to factor these
out into a common interface that can be shared?

I'm not sure it's really necessary to remain serialization agnostic for the
user code, either. Would it be simpler if we just required PB serialization
for these bits?

RowProcessor could represent it's serialization as a message:
{code:java}
Message getRequestData() throws IOException;

void initialize(Message request) throws IOException;
{code}
(These could also be parameterized for additional type safety.)

And the response type could similarly be a message:
{code:java}
T getResult(); // where
{code}

Clients would still get a typed response that they could extract values from
without the additional {{getProtoForResult(T t)}} and
{{parseResponseAsResultType(byte[] bytes)}} methods.

Does this make sense? Of course you could still do the PB-conversions yourself
for PB serialization with the original patch. But I think we're adding some
complexity to remain serialization agnostic in this case. Is the need there to
make the trade off worth it?

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-7157) Report Metrics into an HBase table

 Summary: Report Metrics into an HBase table
 Key: HBASE-7157
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-7157
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Improvement
Reporter: Elliott Clark
Assignee: Elliott Clark

Right now metrics are sent using ServerLoad and RegionLoad to the master. We
should store those(and other) metrics in a table. Storing these metrics in a
table will allow the LoadBalancer to have more context. In addition those
metrics will be useful for the ui.

[~mbertozzi] If PE implemented
http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/current/api/org/apache/hadoop/util/Tool.html,
you'd get the -D stuff and some other bits and pieces for free? As Himanshu
says, this might not work the way folks expect:

{code}
+if (cmd.equals("-D")) {
{code}

Often they won't have the space between the '-D' and config.

[~jxiang] Yeah, would be cool if the tsdb-reader could run against this
table...so could do nice queries. Benoit said'd it'd be cool having same
format. TSDB has nice compaction of the content every hour to make the metrics
more compact but maybe we just TTL the stuff out before we need to do this --
unless user changes the config. to keep the metrics.

> Right now metrics are sent using ServerLoad and RegionLoad to the master. We
> should store those(and other) metrics in a table. Storing these metrics in a
> table will allow the LoadBalancer to have more context. In addition those
> metrics will be useful for the ui.

{quote}The space after '-D' should be removed, right?{quote}

both syntax are valid... -D property=value or -Dproperty=value
if you look at the Export tool the help is mixed with space and not.
I find the space one much cleaner to read, but if we go for the non space one
as default I'm ok with it.

I think we need to get all those committed to the branch, and then put up a doc
about the features, what it provides, how it works, and why we chose particular
semantics. We also need to document its current caveats.

We'll do some testing and probably need to do a little rebasing before we can
consider a trunk merge.

We'll put a flag up here when we are ready but as a heads up, we'd like 1-2
more committers to review. (Currently it is Me, Jesse, and Ted in some places).

So, a new bean for hlog. Nice that it slots under regionserver. Call the bean
'wal' instead? (Change this too: "Metrics about HBase RegionServer HLog";)
Looks like you should rename some classes too... MetricsSourceHLogImpl,
MetricsHLog... etc. HLog is an abomination of a name. WAL tells you more what
it is about where HLog says nought, worse, is misleading even. Are those bytes
or megs for size or what? If I hover over the metric will it tell me -- it
doesn't look like the description identifies the unit size?

They are kinda beautiful.

Your BaseSource in wal class should reference the other BaseSource stuff so it
can be seen that there is a pattern going on here.

slow log time should be configurable? i.e. +if (time > 1000) {... can do
that in another issue.

Patch looks good to me otherwise.

The BaseSource is an interface that is shared between all sources. The
BaseSourceImpl is a class that all the sources in a single compat jar derive

As per stack's recommendation, merging HBASE-7150 patch (New class JVM.java)
with patch for ResourceCheckerJUnitListener (This JIRA).
 Note that JVM.java cannot use hadoop's ShellCommandExecutor as intended due to
differences in IBM JDK's implementation of the Long class.

this patch is committed, please delete the file (svn rm?)

hbase-common/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/util/OSMXBean.java that was
included with HBASE-6965 as the file JVM.java included in the patch above

When I worked on HBASE-2195 I added a mechanism for an edit to identify its
source cluster, so that replication would not bounce it back to the source.
See: {{this.clusterId =
zkHelper.getUUIDForCluster(zkHelper.getZookeeperWatcher());}} in
ReplicationSource, and {{put.setClusterId(entry.getKey().getClusterId());}} in
ReplicationSink.

In master-master replication scenarios, it would very useful if CopyTable would
identify the source cluster (by tagging each Put/Delete with the source
clusterId before applying it).

Hey folks,

I saw the hadoop 1.1.0 release notes and wanted to check on the Hadoop 8230 in
particular. I am looking to try 1.1 with hbase 0.94 so as to get the hdfs stale
node patches into the system. However, I wanted to check on the sync/append
changes. Does this change mean that hsync is enabled by default and is going to
be used for HBase append operation instead of the previous hflush
implementation ? From my understanding, this would be a performance cost
(persisting to disk vs writing to OS buffers) ?

Thanks
Varun

While 0.94 can be build against Hadoop 1.1.0 the behavior will be the same.
There is a lot of confusion about append, sync, hsync, hflush. Let me try to
clarify.

# HBase never needed append, but only the sync part of the 0.20 append branch.
# Until HDFS-744 Hadoop did not have any durable sync. hsync was identical to
hflush
# When we talk about sync in HBase we always mean hflush (until HBASE-5954 is
done, that is)

That means as far as this issue is concerned, you can safely switch to Hadoop
1.1.0.

(I tried to summarize this here:
http://hadoop-hbase.blogspot.com/2012/05/hbase-hdfs-and-durable-sync.html)

HBase does not use append, but needed the append to be enabled to have the sync
API (hflush, hsync). From what I understand, HADOOP-8230 decouples append and
sync support, and enables sync by default.

However, HBase still uses hflush() by default, and it is not changed. In
HBASE-5954, we will have the option to chose between hflush/hsync depending on
desired durability guarantees per column family/table.

See Lars' excellent blog post on this:
http://hadoop-hbase.blogspot.com/2012/05/hbase-hdfs-and-durable-sync.html
