[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-10886) add htrace-zipkin to the runtime dependencies again

Masatake Iwasaki commented on HBASE-10886:
--

From the perspective of runtime dependency of the binary distribution of
HBase, all of the jars htrace-zipkin requires are provided (in lib dir). In
order to keep compile time dependency as clean as possible, I think [providing
(the way to build) the jar with
dependencies|https://github.com/cloudera/htrace/pull/25] for manual setup is
the option.

I would like to make setup of htrace-zipkin anyway easier because it is
currently the only viable span receiver on distributed environment.

Once htrace-zipkin was removed from depencencies in HBASE-9700. Because all
of the depencencies of htrace-zipkin is bundled with HBase now, it is good to
add it for the ease of use.

When a delete family Mutation comes, a Cell will be added into the list with
Qualifier as null. (See Delete#deleteFamily(byte[])). So it will miss getting
added against the check list == null || list.isEmpty(). We will fail getting
the cells under this cf for covering permission check.

[~apurtell]

when you're talking about propagated in the background with best effort and
internal distributed non-persistent store, and that it doesn't have to be
coupled to ZK, you mean that this store would be kind of option for the
consensus library (referred via HBASE-10909), and that it would have 2 modes of
replication - one for guaranteed propagation of distributed state (like part
of distributed state machine and one for best effort propagation? Do I
understand that correct? I.e. when you say best effort, what kind of
guarantees you imply?

In namespaces and acls, zk callbacks are used so all participating servers
are notified when there is a change in acls/namespaces list.
The new visibility tags feature coming in copies the same model of using zk
with listeners for the features' particular notifications.
Three systems each w/ their own implementation of the notifications all using
zk w/ their own feature-specific watchers.
 Should probably unify.
Do we have to go via zk? Seems like all want to be notified when an hbase
table is updated. Could we tell servers directly rather than go via zk?

Not a store for the consensus library, a distributed store/cache for internal
use by components like the security coprocessors and namespace management (all
of which currently do their own thing).

By best effort I proposed above epidemic propagation. We could tune by interval
and fanout. No guarantees besides a likelihood of convergence that can be
derived from those parameters.

Yes, another mode that guarantees propagation to all RegionServers or returns
failure.

We could add a simple gossip protocol for the first and use the pluggable
distributed barrier facility for the second. The consensus package could handle
the second also.

[~pablomedina85] you may want to take a look at HBASE-10909 (and pdf attached
to it). As ZooKeeper is used in many places throughout, integration with other
consensus libs to replace it would require certain refactoring of current
codebase.

Replace ZK with a consensus lib(paxos, zab or raft) running within master
processes to provide better master failover performance and state consistency
 --

 Key: HBASE-10296
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-10296
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Brainstorming
  Components: master, Region Assignment, regionserver
Reporter: Honghua Feng

Currently master relies on ZK to elect active master, monitor liveness and
store almost all of its states, such as region states, table info,
replication info and so on. And zk also plays as a channel for
master-regionserver communication(such as in region assigning) and
 client-regionserver communication(such as replication state/behavior change).
But zk as a communication channel is fragile due to its one-time watch and
asynchronous notification mechanism which together can leads to missed
events(hence missed messages), for example the master must rely on the state
transition logic's idempotence to maintain the region assigning state
machine's correctness, actually almost all of the most tricky inconsistency
issues can trace back their root cause to the fragility of zk as a
 communication channel.
Replace zk with paxos running within master processes have following benefits:
 1. better master failover performance: all master, either the active or the
standby ones, have the same latest states in memory(except lag ones but which
can eventually catch up later on). whenever the active master dies, the newly
elected active master can immediately play its role without such failover
work as building its in-memory states by consulting meta-table and zk.
 2. better state consistency: master's in-memory states are the only truth
about the system, which can eliminate inconsistency from the very beginning.
and though the states are contained by all masters, paxos guarantees they are
 identical at any time.
 3. more direct and simple communication pattern: client changes state by
sending requests to master, master and regionserver talk directly to each
other by sending request and response...all don't bother to using a
third-party storage like zk which can introduce more uncertainty, worse
 latency and more complexity.
 4. zk can only be used as liveness monitoring for determining if a
regionserver is dead, and later on we can eliminate zk totally when we build
 heartbeat between master and regionserver.
I know this might looks like a very crazy re-architect, but it deserves deep
thinking and serious discussion for it, right?

Though this is a broader and bigger change, it original motivation derives
 from [HBASE-8751|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-8751]: the newly
introduced per-peer tableCFs attribute should be treated the same way as the
peer-state, which is a permanent sub-node under peer node but using permanent
zk node is deemed as an incorrect practice. So let's refactor to eliminate
the permanent zk node. And the HBASE-8751 can then align its newly introduced
per-peer tableCFs attribute with this *correct* implementation theme.

As some sort of follow-up or initial step towards HBASE-10296...
Whatever consensus algorithm/library may be the chosen, perhaps on of first
practical steps towards this goal would be to better abstract ZK-related API
and details, which are now throughout the codebase (mostly leaked throuth
 ZkUtil, ZooKeeperWatcher and listeners).
I'd like to propose a series of patches to help better abstract out zookeeper
(and then help develop consensus APIs).
Here is first version of patch for initial review (then I'm planning to work
on another handlers in regionserver, and then perhaps start working on
 abstracting listeners).

The ScanLabelGenerator is used by the VisibilityController to assemble the
effective label set for a user in the RPC context before processing any
request. Currently only one implementation of this interface can be
installed, although which implementation to use can be specified in the site
file. Instead it should be possible to stack multiple implementations of this
component the same way we do coprocessors, installed with explicit priority
with ties broken by a counter, where those implementations installed later in
the chain have an opportunity to modify the pending effective label set.

In this particular case we would be propagating updates for a distributed

In namespaces and acls, zk callbacks are used so all participating servers
are notified when there is a change in acls/namespaces list.
The new visibility tags feature coming in copies the same model of using zk
with listeners for the features' particular notifications.
Three systems each w/ their own implementation of the notifications all using
zk w/ their own feature-specific watchers.
 Should probably unify.
Do we have to go via zk? Seems like all want to be notified when an hbase
table is updated. Could we tell servers directly rather than go via zk?

Authorizations(ListString labels)
Validation from here can be for label one after other so that in the Exception
msg, u can clearly say which Auth label is invalid. Same applicable to
VisibilityController#createVisibilityLabelFilter
We can just use VisibilityLabelsValidator#isValidLabel(byte[] label) which is
already there and used by put ?
{code}
throw new IllegalArgumentException(Authorizations cannot contain '(', ')' ,''
,'|', '!'
+  +  and cannot be empty :+label);
{code}
Error message can be bettter I think. This is invalid Auth *label*

However as seen on HBASE-10878, we accept for authorizations strings that
would not work if provided as labels in visibility expressions. We should
throw an exception at least in cases where someone tries to define or use a
label or authorization including visibility expression operators '', '|',

bq. Make Master arbiter for these new system tables – only the master can mod
them – and then add a response on the heartbeat to update regionservers on last
edit? Could be as simple as master just replying w/ timestamp of last edit.
We should do this as a part of (or using) HBASE-9864. I was thinking of
something similar, where the data is kept in an hbase table as a snapshot +
WAL. All transactions will have an trxid (NO timestamps please). All region
servers open a session with a lease, and keep heartbeats to renew their lease.
They send the last seen trxId, and the coordinator replies with the list of
edits that they should apply to their in memory cache. If some reader looses
it's leases, the coordinator (master) invalidates its session (so that there is
an upper bound on the time the edits will be propogated). The coordinator keeps
the last seen trxId per session, so that it can do recreate the snapshot and
get rid of write ahead log entries.

However, astute readers might have noticed that this is indeed similar to zk's
own protocol except that the data is not replicated via ZAB, but via datanode
pipelines and hbase.

These APIs would help in implementations that have Buffers offheap (for now

If anything more is needed could be added when needed.

Currently HFileArchiver is always called when a table is dropped.
A configuration option (either global or per table) should be provided so
that archiving can be skipped when table is deleted.

Thanks Stack for creating this. Let's start linking the issues.
From the above list, I really doubt some of the items will make in 1.0 (like
HBASE-4047), but some of them are absolute must if you ask me. Especially, we
should be focussing on the APIs a bit, and some correctness fixes (seqId-mvcc,
dist log replay depends on this, and also HBASE-9905).

Currently, one has to specify the data block encoding of the table explicitly
 using the config parameter
 hbase.mapreduce.hfileoutputformat.datablock.encoding when doing a bulkload
load. This option is easily missed, not documented and also works differently
than compression, block size and bloom filter type, which are auto detected.
The solution would be to add support to auto detect datablock encoding
 similar to other parameters.
The current patch does the following:
 1. Automatically detects datablock encoding in HFileOutputFormat.
 2. Keeps the legacy option of manually specifying the datablock encoding
around as a method to override auto detections.
 3. Moves string conf parsing to the start of the program so that it fails
fast during starting up instead of failing during record writes. It also
makes the internals of the program type safe.
 4. Adds missing doc strings and unit tests for code serializing and
deserializing config paramerters for bloom filer type, block size and
 datablock encoding.

Currently we allow any string as visibility label or request authorization.
However as seen on HBASE-10878, we accept for authorizations strings that
would not work if provided as labels in visibility expressions. We should
throw an exception at least in cases where someone tries to define or use a
label or authorization including visibility expression operators '', '|',
 '!', '(', ')'.

 Issues with prefetching are:
 - we do two calls to meta: one for the exact row, one for the prefetch
 - it's done in a lock
 - we take the next 10 regions. Why 10, why the 10 next?
 - is it useful if the table has 100K regions?
 Options are:
 - just remove it
 - replace it with a reverse scan: this would save a call

 Key: HBASE-10018
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-10018

  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 0.98.0, 0.96.0

 10018.v5.patch, 10018.v6.patch, 10018v3.patch

 Issues with prefetching are:
 - we do two calls to meta: one for the exact row, one for the prefetch
 - it's done in a lock
 - we take the next 10 regions. Why 10, why the 10 next?
 - is it useful if the table has 100K regions?
 Options are:
 - just remove it
 - replace it with a reverse scan: this would save a call

I reviewed v4
I'm +1, just a nit that can be fixed on commit:

{code}
  FutureResult f = cs.take();
  if (f != null) {
return f.get(); // great we got an answer
  }
{code}
In the secondaries part, I don't think that cs.take can return null.

Running the integration test in HBASE-10572, and HBASE-10355, it seems that
we need some changes for cache invalidation of meta entries from the client
 side in backup RPCs.
Mainly the RPC's made for replicas should not invalidate the cache for all
the replicas (for example on RegionMovedException, connection error etc).

It would be good to demonstrate that use of region replicas reduces read
latency. PerformanceEvaluation can be used manually for this purpose, but
it's not able to use ChaosMonkey. An integration test can set up the monkey
 actions and automate execution.

 Attachments: hbase-10873.patch

By default, a backup master is treated just like another regionserver. So it
can host as many regions as other regionserver does. When the backup master
becomes the active one, region balancer needs to move those user regions on
this master to other region servers. To minimize the impact, it's better not
to assign too many regions on backup masters. It may not be good to leave the
backup masters idle and not host any region either.
We should make this adjustable so that users can control how many regions to
 assign to each backup master.

Status: Patch Available (was: Open)

Attached the first patch. It's also on RB: https://reviews.apache.org/r/20088/

This patch introduced a weight concept for user regions assigned to
active/backup master. Adjusting the weight can control the number of user
regions assigned to backup masters. The weight logic is used for 1) region
balancing, 2) round robin assignment, 3) random assignment. When retaining
assignment finds the original server is not avaiable, the same random
assignment logic based on weight is used to choose a new server.

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-10923) Control where to put meta region

---

Summary: Control where to put meta region
 Key: HBASE-10923
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-10923
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Improvement
Reporter: Jimmy Xiang

There is a concern on placing meta regions on the master, as in the comments of
HBASE-10569. I was thinking we should have a configuration for a load balancer
to decide where to put it. Adjusting this configuration we can control whether
to put the meta on master, or other region server.

I was thinking simplifying/improving the region assignments. The first step
is to co-locate the meta and the master as many people agreed on HBASE-5487.

I guess I'm 5 minutes too late, but in the future would it be possible to set a
better jira title once we know what the patch is going to look like? In this
case, location prefetch isn't a thing, it's meta prefetching or region
location prefetching. Also it wasn't changed, it was removed.

I think we can now close this issue? HBASE-6841

Umbrella issue for eliminating Cell copying.
The Cell interface allows us to work with a reference to underlying bytes in
the block cache without copying each Cell into consecutive bytes in an array
 (KeyValue).

SSH#toString returns the master server name, which is not so interesting.
It's better to show the dead server's name instead.

successfully
   b) 'user1' that does not have table permission on 'TestTable'. Load failed

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-10924) [region_mover]: Adjust region_mover script to retry unloading a server a configurable number of times in case of region splits/merges

2014-04-07 Thread Aleksandr Shulman (JIRA)
Aleksandr Shulman created HBASE-10924:
-

Summary: [region_mover]: Adjust region_mover script to retry
unloading a server a configurable number of times in case of region
splits/merges
 Key: HBASE-10924
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-10924
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: Region Assignment
Affects Versions: 0.94.15
Reporter: Aleksandr Shulman
Assignee: Aleksandr Shulman
 Fix For: 0.94.19

Observed behavior:
In about 5% of cases, my rolling upgrade tests fail because of stuck regions
during a region server unload. My theory is that this occurs when region
assignment information changes between the time the region list is generated,
and the time when the region is to be moved.

An example of such a region information change is a split or merge.

Example:
Regionserver A has 100 regions (#0-#99). The balancer is turned off and the
regionmover script is called to unload this regionserver. The regionmover
script will generate the list of 100 regions to be moved and then proceed down
that list, moving the regions off in series. However, there is a region, #84,
that has split into two daughter regions while regions 0-83 were moved. The
script will be stuck trying to move #84, timeout, and then the failure will
bubble up (attempt 1 failed).

Proposed solution:
This specific failure mode should be caught and the region_mover script should
now attempt to move off all the regions. Now, it will have 16+1 (due to split)
regions to move. There is a good chance that it will be able to move all 17 off
without issues. However, should it encounter this same issue (attempt 2
failed), it will retry again. This process will continue until the maximum
number of unload retry attempts has been reached.

This is not foolproof, but let's say for the sake of argument that 5% of unload
attempts hit this issue, then with a retry count of 3, it will reduce the
unload failure probability from 0.05 to 0.000125 (0.05^3).

Next steps:
I am looking for feedback on this approach. If it seems like a sensible
approach, I will create a strawman patch and test it.

That seems like a good place to put that logic since it'll be easier to
maintain.
As a bonus, we'll have implicit compatibility checks at compile time :)
Only concern is that we don't break the shell api, but that shouldn't be
difficult to maintain.

In reviewing patch for HBASE-10569, Stack pointed out some existing issue
with CatalogTracker. I looked into it and I think the abortable usage can be
 improved.
 * If ZK is null, when a new one is created, the abortable could be null. We
 need consider this.
 * The throwableAborter is to abort the process in case some ZK exception in
MetaRegionTracker. In case the tracker is in a server, we don't need to do
this, we can use the server as the abortable. In case the tracker is in a
client, we can just abort the connection. Right?

Control number of regions assigned to backup masters

 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Improvement
  Components: Balancer
Reporter: Jimmy Xiang
Assignee: Jimmy Xiang
 Fix For: 0.99.0

 Attachments: hbase-10873.patch

By default, a backup master is treated just like another regionserver. So it
can host as many regions as other regionserver does. When the backup master
becomes the active one, region balancer needs to move those user regions on
this master to other region servers. To minimize the impact, it's better not
to assign too many regions on backup masters. It may not be good to leave the
backup masters idle and not host any region either.
We should make this adjustable so that users can control how many regions to
 assign to each backup master.

There is a concern on placing meta regions on the master, as in the comments
