bq.Chia-Ping Tsai Unrelated, I can't remember where, but in an issue you raised
the notion of a 'RawCell'. I keep meaning to say that I like this notion. We
currently have 'EnhancedCell'. I think RawCell a much better name (Anoop Sam
John & ramkrishna.s.vasudevan – what you think lads?).
So Chia_Ping says we can have Cell, RawCell and ExtendedCell. Correct?

Descriptions from HBASE-17130 shows that sometimes 1 reducer would bring
benefits, number is much more fine-grained than ratio, though to use which
depends on case.
bq. The number of regions in the same table also changes, and the reduce tasks
number also needs to be dynamically adjusted.
I got your mind, what about if the config(string) is between (0, 1), treats it
as ratio; else [1, +), treats it as a specified number. Judge it with regular
expression. WDYT. [~Yun Zhao]

> TableSnapshotInputFormat runs one map task per region in the table snapshot.
> This places unnecessary restriction that the region layout of the original

Sean Busbey reopened HBASE-18601:
-

{{TestHTraceHooks}} fails reliably in master (nightly and on my local box) and
passes if I revert this change.

I tried digging in to see why the failure. It looks like before the patch this
part of the test checked for 1 root instead of 3. There's not enough detail in
the test for it to be obvious how many roots ought to be there. Unfortunately,
the relevant class, {{TraceTree}}, isn't in the [HTrace 4.1
javadocs|http://htrace.incubator.apache.org/javadoc/4.1/htrace-core/index.html]
and the [HTrace website|http://htrace.incubator.apache.org/#releases] makes no
references at all to a 4.2 release. So I'm at a loss.

> TableSnapshotInputFormat runs one map task per region in the table snapshot.
> This places unnecessary restriction that the region layout of the original
> table needs to take the processing resources available to MR job into
> consideration. Allowing to run multiple mappers per region (assuming
> reasonably even key distribution) would be useful.

Yun Zhao commented on HBASE-19226:

The number of regions in the same table also changes, and the reduce tasks
number also needs to be dynamically adjusted.
0.005 a bit too small, generally should be in the range of 0.1 to 1.
Add a specified number is ok, but how to judge with ratio :( [~reidchan]

> When using MapReduce job to perform an incremental load into a table, the
> number of reduce tasks is the current number of regions. If there are too
> many regions, will lead to network+disk I/O is too large, affecting the
> real-time request.
> Need to use a configuration to set a number or ratio?
> Limit running reduce tasks since
> [https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MAPREDUCE-5583], the old version can
> only be set reduce number.

attached branch-1 patch which was only the parts the didn't have any conflicts.
for anything that did have conflicts, i left the code unchanged on the
assumption that because the base is different we will need to review it
separately anyway.

> A region is flushed if its memory component exceed a threshold (default size
> is 128MB).
> A flush policy decides whether to flush a store by comparing the size of the
> store to another threshold (that can be configured with
> hbase.hregion.percolumnfamilyflush.size.lower.bound).
> Currently the implementation (in both cases) compares the data size
> (key-value only) to the threshold where it should compare the heap size
> (which includes index size, and metadata).

Duo Zhang commented on HBASE-19216:

Seems the procedure framework is not done yet? I followed the
AssignRegionProcedure to write my RefreshPeerConfigProcedure, and then I found
that, there is no way to get the response for a RemoteProcedure call!

[~stack] Is there an existing issue to track this sir? The synchronous
replication will depend on the procedure framework very very heavily, so I need
to the current state... I need to make it done first before implementing
synchronous replication.

Thanks.

> When building the basic framework for HBASE-19064, I found that the
> enable/disable peer is built upon the watcher of zk.
> The problem of using watcher is that, you do not know the exact time when all
> RSes in the cluster have done the change, it is a 'eventually done'.
> And for synchronous replication, when changing the state of a replication
> peer, we need to know the exact time as we can only enable read/write after
> that time. So I think we'd better use procedure to do this. Change the flag
> on zk, and then execute a procedure on all RSes to reload the flag from zk.
> Another benefit is that, after the change, zk will be mainly used as a
> storage, so it will be easy to implement another replication peer storage to
> replace zk so that we can reduce the dependency on zk.

> We have a lot of places in our test code where we use {{UUID.randomUUID}} to
> generate table names or paths for uniqueness. Unfortunately, this uses up a
> good chunk of system entropy, since Sun chose that random UUID's should use
> the NativePRNGBlocking implementation.
> We don't need to block on entropy for random bits to pick a random table name
> in a test, so we can use something that doesn't strain the system too much -
> secure random can be a source of problems on some VM or containers.
