Yahoo! China's 3GB free email storage largest in the nation * 10 May 2006* (CHINA KNOWLEDGE PRESS) May 10, 2006 (China Knowledge) Yahoo! China will upgrade all free web-based email accounts storage capacity to 3.5 gigabytes and increase email attachment quota to 20 megabytes, the China Business News reported Tuesday. These email storage and attachment transfer quotas are believed to be the largest in China's free web-based email service history. Currently, these services in China offer a maximum storage of two gigabytes. Yahoo! commented that storage capacity is a defining factor in the web-based email business, said the paper. The report added that according to the Ministry of Information Industry, there are currently 100 million Internet users in China who on average own 1.5 free web-based email accounts and this number is expected to escalate. Google to Launch New Calendar Service *Thu Apr 13, 12:59 AM ET* Google Inc., the top online search engine, is unveiling a calendar service that allows users to store appointments online, receive reminders about them and share those plans with others. The offering, available starting Thursday at http://www.google.com/calendar, is designed to make it easy for users to add entries, said Carl Sjogreen, product manager for Google Calendar. Gmail, Google's mail service, has been modified to automatically recognize when messages mention an event so recipients can seamlessly add it to their calendar. Users can also add entries in simple text, such as Coffee with Mom on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Cafe La Boheme, eliminating the need to fill out forms. Google Calendar is the latest offering from the Mountain View-based company, which analysts have said is gradually replacing its search-only business model with that of a portal, or all-purpose Web site. Over the past four years, Google has been catching up to rivals Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news) and Microsoft Corp.'s MSN by adding e-mail, news, photo sharing, instant messaging, shopping and mapping services and a finance section. Sjogreen said the calendar service is consistent with Google's oft-stated mission of helping people organize the world's data and make it accessible and useful. The new service gives Google fuel as it competes against Yahoo, which has offered a calendar service since 1998 and in October acquired Upcoming.org, an event planning site. A feature that allows users of Google Calendar to send invitations and manage guest lists also helps the company take on Evite.com, the online invitation service owned by IAC/InterActiveCorp. Google also stands to profit from the calendar and other services, which help keep users moored at its own site instead of sending them to other places on the Web. It also named the contest's winners. This is the second year that Google, in Mountain View, Calif., has organized this contest in India. A spin-off benefit from the contest is that it can help to identify top programmers who could be hired for the company's research and development organization. The contest was open to programmers from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand and Bangladesh. Last year. Google India Code Jam also had about 14,000 participants. Both last year and this year the top prize went to Ardian Kristanto Poernomo from Nanyang Technology University in Singapore. India's large number of developers are the target of multinational technology companies that use contests either to identify good coders or to build developer support around its products. Microsoft Corp., for example, earlier this week announced a Security Shootout aimed at promoting secure code writing among Indian developers. The contest is aimed at the 650,000-strong developer community in India and will test their skills writing secure code by pitting them against the best in the country, the company said. The Microsoft Security Shootout comprises three online rounds. In the first and second round, participants will need to answer 30 questions. From the first round, the top 1,000 will move to the next stage, from which 100 participants will be selected for the final round. Frequently e-mailed contacts will appear at the top of the Google Talk list by default. Yahoo on Monday officially released version 7 of its popular Yahoo! Messenger that will enables users to both search the Web and make telephone calls without leaving the client. Analysts say the new release is aimed at attracting and retaining a youthful user base for Yahoo's IM network. Messenger with Voice to highlight new focus on PC-to-PC calling. Users will be able to make phone calls between computers, but the initial version will not allow calls to standard landline phones. Voice has become the watchword of instant messaging and AOL, MSN and Yahoo are continuing to improve their voice capabilities to ensure they stay ahead of popular voice-based messaging clients such as Skype, which counted 100 million downloads as of mid-April. Also included in Yahoo! Messenger 7 is a feature called LiveWords, where users can highlight IM text and receive search results based on that selection. Such a feature was first introduced by Microsoft as part of MSN Messenger 7 in April of this year. Users will also be able to display search results in an IM conversation, as well as search directly from the Yahoo messaging client. The new release is available in 18 localized versions outside of the U.S. and Yahoo says that millions of its users have downloaded and testing the beta version of its client with voice capabilities. Kahuna is codename for an upcoming version of Hotmail that will sport a new style of interface, automatic inbox refreshing and a preview pane that will enable Hotmail users to read and respond to e-mail without ever leaving their inbox. Microsoft has reason to be testing such additions: Many of these features are already out of testing and in production among its competitors. According to sources familiar with the upgrade, Kahuna is a limited beta that is not heavy on features as of yet. Its interface is known internally as Wave 11 and is designed to be lightweight and clean for better performance. Further integration with MSN Spaces and Messenger is said to be forthcoming. Very little emphasis will be cycled toward the calendar component of Hotmail in the initial phase. Recognizing that it is behind in several key areas, Microsoft has engineered the next wave of Hotmail, allegedly referred to as the competitive wave, in a methodical push to meet or exceed the competition. Microsoft has alerted consumers that Netscape's latest browser appears to break the XML rendering capabilities in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Dave Massy, a senior program manager for IE, warned users in a blog posting that after installing Netscape 8, IE will render XML files as a blank page, including XML files that have an XSLT transformation. Microsoft did not make clear what versions of IE were affected, but a user of the DeveloperDex forum said he experienced the problem on version 6 of IE, which had been patched with Windows Service Pack 2. Microsoft said it is investigating the problem and will work with Netscape to resolve it. It advised a workaround of uninstalling Netscape 8 and editing the registry settings. One reader of the blog said the rendering problem could be a problem with IE, rather than Netscape. He suggested that such a feature could be useful for Microsoft as it would deter users considering a migration from IE to Netscape. But another reader, Chris Beach, came to Microsoft's defense. Intricate Tech Brings 'Madagascar' to Life May 26, 2005 By Peter Galli The ability of animators to turn an imaginary world into reality for millions of movie-goers rests solidly on the shoulders of technological advances, said Jeffrey Katzenberg, the co-founder and CEO of the DreamWorks SKG studio. At a recent media conference about Madagascar, the latest animated movie from DreamWorks, which opens at theaters around the country on Friday, Katzenberg answered an eWEEK question about technological advances by saying, If you can imagine it, then we can pretty much make it happen. He pointed to how technology has revolutionized animated filmmaking since Aladdin was produced in the early 1990s, and how it now affects every aspect of the animation process. As an example, he cited the fact that the color palette has expanded from four colors to 250 over the past 13 years, while the Madagascar landscape has 150,000 objects moving at once. On the technical front, all of the technical work, production design, animation and rendering for Madagascar was done on a complex system of Hewlett-Packard hardware running Linux as well as its own proprietary operating system known as e-motion. The movie has taken about four years to complete, which sounds like a long time, but when all of the stages and components are considered, it's not really long at all. Consider that every detail of every person, creature, element, plant and background has to be painstakingly coded and then stored in the huge database of the e-motion operating system. Also, every movement made by the foliage, background, elements such water, and the characters, in this case all animals, had to appear realistic to the design of the movie, which has gone back and adopted the stretch and squash technique along with the not-quite-real approach of cartoons and animations of the past. Every hair on every animal represents a line of computer code, with lead character Alex the Lion having 1.7 million hairs on his head. The design team also developed five different kinds of lemurs with 12 variations of hair type, or 60 possible combinations, for characters. This would have been impossible just a few years ago. Philippe Gluckman, who supervised a team of 45 and all of the film's visual effects, told eWEEK in an onsite interview at his office in Redwood Shores, Calif., that HP supplied all of the servers, desktops, laptops and notebooks, which were powered by AMD Opteron processors. The render farm for production consisted of HP Proliant servers running AMD Opteron processors. DreamWorks moved to the AMD Opteron processors during movie production, which was risky given the possibility of disruption, but this turned out not to be the case. The transition to the AMD Opteron processors was made midway through production and was amazingly smooth, Gluckman said. E-motion, DreamWorks' proprietary software, used a specific programming language close to C and allowed those users who were technical to go in and program certain components, which gave them a good measure of control over their work and also saved time. Production artists don't program in any of the core technologies like the render program; they program in script on the production side, he said. Asked what some of the main rendering challenges were, he said getting the diverse foliage and the fur of the lemurs to render was very problematic at first, using up way too much memory. The fur had to be created from scratch because there was no existing component in the software database, so some memory problems emerged early on in which only five or six lemurs could be rendered before all of the memory was used up. On the software side, the lemurs' fur put our memory to test as it exposed things in the render that hadn't been exposed before and needed optimization. Initially we could only render six Lemurs, and some scenes, like the rave, where they are all dancing, required hundreds of Lemurs, he said. The solution? Create something that represented the volume of fur and the edge breakup that real fur would give, and that had shades like the fur itself, but which was not the actual fur. This solved the problem, which was helped by the fact that the AMD processors on the Proliant servers gave an immediate 35 percent increase in performance and speed. DreamWorks also sent hundreds of thousands of rendering hours to HP's Utility Rendering Service, essentially extending DreamWorks' own render farm and helping provide the computing power needed to complete the film. When we ran into rendering issues, we just looked at the ways we could solve them, using our hardware, software and on the production side. Once it became clear there was such a problem, we bring the production and technology sides together to brainstorm around this. It's a question of integrating different communications channels together giving them an opportunity to go a bit further than anyone else has gone. The once prominent provider of paid online services will offer free e-mail to 20 million active users of the free AOL Instant Messenger as a test before it's final launch about a month later. The e-mail service, which offers 2 gigabytes of free storage space, will be subsidized by banner advertisements that run alongside the e-mail screens, similar to other free Web-based e-mail services. AOL's new AIM Mail service is part of an ambitious plan to overhaul its business model to focus on freely available services and programming from one that depends on subscription revenue. The move is a dramatic reversal from its previous strategy, built around assembling the most compelling package of Internet programming in order to get subscribers to pay about $20 a month for dial-up Internet service. AOL has been losing subscribers to phone and cable companies offering high speed Internet packages. At the same time, AOL's advertising revenue has exploded, jumping 45 percent in its most recent first quarter from a year ago, prompting the Internet service to rethink its strategy last year. It's a blog. It's a dog. No, it's Yahoo 360! What *is *this service Yahoo unleashed on Tuesday, anyway? Yahoo says it's designed to help you stay in touch with existing friends, not introduce you to strangers. But it feels a lot like Friendster and other social networking sites, with the addition of a blogging tool, a smattering of traditional Yahoo content and two odd new text-messaging tools. Yahoo's service (360.yahoo.comhttp://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/360/washpost/tc_washpost/storytext/a20468_2005apr2/14759499/*http://360.yahoo.com), released to a limited number of beta testers, lets people create personal online sites to share content with their friends and family members, such as photos, blogs, Yahoo music and movies they liked, Yahoo Groups they belong to, and restaurant reviews they've written in Yahoo Local (are you getting the idea that this is about promoting Yahoo?). Think of this as a My Yahoo page with your friends, said Julie Herendeen, Yahoo's vice president of network products. Here's how it works: When you sign in, Yahoo automatically creates a personal page for you, along with a blog if you care to write in it, a friends page listing people you've chosen to connect with, and lists of your favorite things. Communicating with Yahoo 360 buddies, though, is so multi-layered that it might give you an Internet migraine. In addition to sending instant messages via Yahoo's instant messenger (there's no support for more popular IM services from AOL or Microsoft), you can use two new communication channels. Next, for each type of content you publish, you specify which group gets access. You might restrict viewing of your blog, say, to only close friends. For now, the trial version doesn't let people share much content, except in tightly formatted blogs and a few rigidly defined categories, including lists limited to music, books, TV shows and personal interests. The local reviews feature, giving you the option of having Yahoo Local reviews you have written show up on your home page, doesn't let you pick what reviews appear. Moreover, its prominent placement on your home page suggests Yahoo is making a not-so-subtle push for its yellow-pages service. Google Boosts Gmail Storage to 2GB April 1, 2005 By Matt Hicks On the one-year anniversary of Gmail, Google is doubling the storage limit on e-mail accounts to 2GB and keeping the service as an invite-only beta. The increase, going live on Friday, is the first of a number of storage bumps that the company is planning in the coming weeks and months, said Georges Harik, product management director for Gmail. Google Inc. has decided to make an indefinite number of ongoing increases to Gmail's storage limits to meet user demand. Since introducing Gmail on April Fool's Day a year ago, Google has heard from users wanting to know what happens when, and if, they reach the 1GB cap, Harik said. There are people approaching 500 to 600MB, and even 900MB, and people are asking what the plan is for them, Harik said. We're trying to stay ahead of any issue [users] may have with Gmail and anticipate their needs. The storage boost follows Yahoo Inc.'s announcement last week that it will boost free Yahoo Mail accounts to 1GB of storage in late April, matching Gmail's previous cap. On paid accounts, Yahoo already provides 2GB of storage. When Google first unveiled Gmail, it spurred a storage race among the leading Web-based e-mail providers. Along with Yahoo, Microsoft Corp.'s MSN Hotmail service also has increased its storage limits by providing free accounts with 250MB and paid accounts with 2GB. He said exact dates and storage targets for the upcoming increases were not available but it would occur in short periods of time. In other Google news, the company Thursday announced a feature for the Mozilla Firefox browser that speeds the loading of the top Web page in Google search results. Google now instructs Firefox and other Mozilla browser to download the top search result in advance, Google software engineer Reza Behforooz wrote in the Google Blog. So if you click on it, you'll get to that page even more quickly, Behforooz wrote. Also, on Wednesday, Google released a stock-quote feature that lets users type in a ticker symbol in its search-query box to retrieve stock information. Google is receiving a direct feed of market information to provide the capability. The ticker-symbol lookup also works in Google SMS (Short Message Service), the company's mobile offering for retrieving targeted search results through mobile messaging. Yahoo on Tuesday said it plans to once again boost its free e-mail storage limit--this time to 1GB, the same amount offered by archrival Google. Beginning in late April, Yahoo will upgrade free users to the new storage limit of 1GB, up from its current 250MB. The company said it will take about two weeks for all Yahoo Mail users to see the boost. Yahoo's storage upgrade comes one week after Google started offering Gmail accounts to random visitors of its home page. This has led to heightened speculation in news articles and blogs that Google plans to open Gmail's doors to the public on April 1, a year after it launched in its current test form. Brad Garlinghouse, Yahoo's vice president of communications products, said in an interview that Yahoo Mail's storage upgrade was not in response to Google's latest moves. Instead, he said Yahoo is paying attention to what users are doing and how they're using their in-boxes. Since Gmail premiered last year, free e-mail has changed. Popular Web mail services such as Yahoo and Microsoft's Hotmail had offered strict storage limitations to their in-boxes, and required people to pay extra for additional space. Shortly after Gmail was released, Yahoo announced plans to boost its storage to 100MB from 4MB, and then upgraded it again to 250MB in November. Subsequently, Microsoft said it would implement its own storage boost to 250MB. Besides the 1GB of storage, Yahoo Mail will offer antivirus scanning.
