Thanks David. First I can tell you that windows live one care is not easy to use with jaws. I mostly have to use the jaws cursor and sometimes I get a smaller window open in front of the main one and jaws reads fragments of lines along with what I want to hear. I have learned to filter that out. Anyway, my problem is with the firewall. The two computers on my network won't see each other if the firewall is turned on. I can turn it off and transfer to my hearts content. In fact I did that earlier today. I wonder if there is any way I can configure the firewall to allow the two computers to communicate. Regards. [JAWS-Users] Re: Unwanted Windows Installer for Word
Hi Taika, This sometimes happens to me, as well, where the Windows installer will suddenly appear for no reason. I can't say that it affected my office applications, but I eventually found out that it had something to do with Adobe's automatic updates installing themselves. If you check out your processes in the task manager or the services in the ms config dialog box, you'll notice a file called accrotray.exe. This is a program that resides in the background that monitors activity on the Adobe server for updates that need to be installed. This is similar to the Windows automatic updates feature. This can be tweaked in the Adobe Acrobat options dialog box. The Easiest way to tell if you have this or not, is if you have Adobe Acrobat reader 7 and up, you can bet that the auto update feature is enabled, as it is enabled by default. Usually this doesn't affect you very much except that it's a pain in the ass when you wonder if you've downloaded a virus that has just installed itself. The other thing is that it doesn't download any updates unless your internet connection is idle for more than a certain number of minutes. Anyway, like I said, it usually doesn't mean anything and you can usually let it go without any problems. [JAWS-Users] Re: trouble with a tool bar
Sarah - I suspect very strongly that this is an Outlook Express problem, not a JAWS problem. The issue seems to be that a lot of add-ins that create new Toolbar entries destroy the ability of the setting that controls the ability to see only unread messages, just as we saw with that anti spam application. The only way that I know to verify this would be to have a sighted person stand by while you open Outlook Express without JAWS running and then see if the behavior is the same as it is when JAWS is running. Since JAWS has no way of controlling what is or is not displayed in any application, I can't believe that it can possibly be a JAWS issue at all. -- Walt Smith - Clearwater, FL [EMAIL PROTECTED] --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list%40googlegroups.com/ Address to contact the management team: [EMAIL PROTECTED] You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "JAWS Users List" group. [JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean?
Walt Smith, How would you like talking browsers or screen readers to read items in an "indented list" of the sort you suggest? How would users of such software know that they are equal items in a list, where the list begins and ends, where sub-lists begin and end, and so forth? I'm just trying to get a clearer idea of what you mean. Technically speaking, most the bullet lists you find on the web are not implied by the HTML itself. HTML includes ordered lists and unordered lists. Graphical browsers have tended to apply a default styling of numbering ordered lists with 1, 2, 3 etc. and itemizing unordered lists with bullets. This styling was not required by the HTML specification. Legacy varieties of HTML included a technique for specifying to visual user agents the type of ordered and unordered lists, choosing from disc, circle, square for different shapes of bullet, and arabic numbers, lowercase alphabetic, uppercase alphabetic, lowercase Roman numerals, and uppercase Roman numerals for different types of numbering. Such presentational hints are not in wide use, and new versions relegate such information to styleSheets, implying they are part of optional presentation not an essential part of content. I have long viewed the relegation of the styles for ordered lists to styleSheets as impractical, since authors may use these numbering systems to refer back to list items later in a text. If your talking browser or screen reader were to read an ordered list as 1, 2, 3, 4 but then the author were to refer back to the third item as Item C it would be confusing. I think most standards-aware authors would currently assume that replacing the bullets with no announcement would be a matter for the speech stylesheet, not for a new HTML element, so I'm interested in your suggestion. There are current at least three new versions of HTML in concurrent development: a version of XHTML 1.1 adapted for accessibility, the second version of XHTML, and a rival spec being created by WHATWG. If there is an as yet unperceived need for new type of list, now would be a good time to introduce it. What would be particularly useful is an explanation of when an author should use a bulleted list and when an unbulleted list. -- Benjamin Hawkes-Lewis --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list%40googlegroups.com/ Address to contact the management team: [EMAIL PROTECTED] You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "JAWS Users List" group. [JAWS-Users] Re: JAWS scripts for super dvd creator
I've never heard of this program and can just about guarantee you that there are no such scripts. You can search for JAWS scripts by doing a Google search. Enclose the program name inside quotation marks and then also add the two words JAWS and script to the search string. For example, for the program you mention here, use something like: "super dvd creator" jaws script You need to be sure that you have the program name exactly correct--that is, with any spaces that are either included or not in the program name. - Original Message - From: "Vy Pham" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 3:30 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS scripts for super dvd creator Hi, Are there any JAWS scripts for super dvd creator? [JAWS-Users] Re: jaws loosing fokis in OE
What you're hearing is the message that OE throws on the screen during the receiving or sending of mail. Sometimes, it doesn't clear itself immediately. There might be an error message there--use the JAWS Cursor to read the whole window. Do you have OE configured properly to retrieve your mail when it's opened? You should never have to press anything to have your mail retrieved. As to your hearing "top" and "bottom," this isn't actually a loss of focus and aside from doing a JAWS repair, I can't suggest a possible solution. The fact that unloading and re-loading JAWS clears it up would possibly support your performing a JAWS repair. - Original Message - From: "Mich" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "jaws-users-list @googlegroups.com" Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 4:19 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws loosing fokis in OE hello all. [JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean?
Which is why I said that it's unfortunate that HTML doesn't have a list format that doesn't use them. As an old author of user documentation, I find it especially objectionable on web pages to not have what we used to call "simple" lists; that is, lists with no highlighting or emphasis on the individual items. They're merely attention-grabbers for sighted readers and in the spirit of informing the blind user of everything that a sighted reader would see, they're announced. My guess; and it's just that; is that in HTML, there's no easy way to indicate that something is a list as opposed to continuing text, so they're used. - Original Message - From: "Bill Gallik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 11:08 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean? Okay, we have a good idea of "what" a bullet is. Now the question is, why are they used. Bullet marks -- or any non-ordering item identifier -- are extremely visual devices to indicate that a new item in a list is following. [JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean?
Not necessarily an important link, but a link where the text simply includes a bullet. In HTML, you can create two types of standard lists--ordered lists and unordered lists. An ordered list has the items numbered (1. 2. 3. etc.) and is intended to be used whenever there's a process that must be performed in order--do this step first, then do the second, etc. An unordered list is simply any other kind of list and in HTML, these list items are bulleted. What you're seeing is a situation where the HTML author has placed items in an unordered list and one or more of these items are links. You probably should have heard JAWS announce that this was a list before it proceeded to read the individual items. It's unfortunate that HTML doesn't allow for a third type of standard list--a list in which the items are neither numbered nor bulleted--but it doesn't. - Original Message - From: "Donnie Parrett" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 1:32 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean? [JAWS-Users] Re: jaws loosing fokis
Hi I also am running Jaws 7.0 with jaws losing focus. Sometimes when i am reading a message, or less often a web site, Jaws will suddenly decide that it needs to return to the top of the message or page. Does anyone have any answers for this? [JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean?
Bullet refers to some type of mark placed prior to an item in a list. It is frequently a filled in circle, or just an outline of a circle. It can also be a check mark, star, arrow, etc. There is no limit to what a bullet looks like, but JAWS does not always give you an accurate description of it. Donnie, A bullet is simply an accent mark. It is normally used to note text under a main topic. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Donnie Parrett Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 6:34 AM To: JAWS-Users Subject: [JAWS-Users] What does bullet mean?
