Hi, 20 minutes seems like an exorpatant amount of time! Mine comes up in about 30 seconds. Could yours be running some kind of a virus or system check at start up? Check this out by looking at your Programs at Startup. If they are there, clear them out and may be set them up on an automatic update time for when you might be asleep. If that is not of help, put your original program disk back in the computer and start the installation process. Either 1 or 2 steps in to it, it will detect that you already have JAWS and will give you a chance to Repair or Modify. Click on Repair and see if that helps. [JAWS-Users] Re: Why is Jaws slow to speak?
Hi Andy, You have given me a galaxy of issues to ponder here of which I am very grateful. The problem became noticeable here n the last couple of weeks. I subscribe to the population that keeps their computer on at all times. I was running into a problem with a piece of jaws friendly software that allowed me to down load music and for some strange reason it started to offer me their upgrade version which is not jaws friendly. Unfortunately, I learn it was not very friendly after i tried their up graded version or pro. Although i was able to successfully un install the pro version and re install the old friendly version, things have not been the same. I've scanned my system with AVg and there are no reported viruses. So I will continue over the week end to explore the suggestions you've referenced in your post. I am familiar with most of these tasks except running MSCONFIG Any guidance on that would be helpful. I did add an exsternal drive back in December. - Original Message - From: Baracco, Andrew W To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2007 11:45 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Why is Jaws slow to speak? There are many possible reasons. Is this a new problem? Did you change anything recently, I. e. install or remove programs? did you add any new hardware, like a second HD? You might try having fewer programs load at startup. You can run MSCONFIG and uncheck unnecessary entried in the startup tab. If you have several programs in the sys tray, try disabling some. I once had this problem on an old computer, and doing a disk defrag helped. If none of these things help, it may be a hardware issue, like a dying power supply or HD. I doubt that JAWS has anything to do with it. [JAWS-Users] Jaws Video Intercept
I hope somebody can give me some direction to go with this. A client of mine installed Jaws version 8 with no problems after installation. He decided to uninstall some other versions of Jaws he had on his system and started with version 5.1. Not knowing any better, he said yes to removing the shared components. After he did that, he keeps getting the Jaws video intercept message when he starts Jaws 8. It's been with my experience that Jaws does not speak when you get this message, but his Jaws does not stop talking. Even when he enters on the execute to install the video intercept, it restarts his system and comes up speaking, but he still has the video intercept message. He can close the video message and Jaws still speaks. If that were all there was to it, that would be OK, but when he uses his Jaws cursor, Jaws does not read anything at all, it just donks on him. Plus, in Word and Outlook, he cannot read by line, it just says blank. Although he can read by word by using the control left or right arrow. I have tried removing all versions of Jaws and reinstalling Jaws 8 with no success. I also tried installing an earlier version of Jaws with the same results. I uninstalled the video intercept, but that didn't help either. I have checked his display settings and they are correct. I uninstalled his video drivers and reinstalled them with no luck. I feel as though it is the video card itself, but am puzzled as to why uninstalling the shared components of Jaws would do that to a video card. So before I try a different video card I was hoping somebody would have a suggestion as to what to try next. [JAWS-Users] Anybody using JAWS w/an AMD chipset?
Hi folks, Thinking about upgrading my laptop. Is anybody running any of the DELL Inspiron laptops, or using the AMD TurionTM 64 chipset? I have a lower end DELL laptop from about 5 years ago that runs JAWS great and handles all my other programs, but I am going to upgrade sometime soon anyway, and since the latest DELL deal seems pretty reasonable, I wanted input on how well JAWS runs with this set up. My previous computers, both laptop and desktop, have all run Intel Pentium chips, so I have no experience with the AMD. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anybody is running VISTA on this set up and has any ideas about that, great. I'm very comfortable with XP and don't particularly see the need for Vista, but if there's any advantage to taking the preloaded instead of having them configure for XP, better I go in knowing that now. Hi David, I have the same problem. WHen I try typing an e mail sometimes a sentence is not where I originally typed it and also when I type a document in MS word 2002 the same thing happens. I haven't had opportunity to get someone here to solve it yet. If I do will post. Maybe someone can help. [JAWS-Users] Re: Why is Jaws slow to speak?
There are many possible reasons. Is this a new problem? Did you change anything recently, I. e. install or remove programs? did you add any new hardware, like a second HD? You might try having fewer programs load at startup. You can run MSCONFIG and uncheck unnecessary entried in the startup tab. If you have several programs in the sys tray, try disabling some. I once had this problem on an old computer, and doing a disk defrag helped. If none of these things help, it may be a hardware issue, like a dying power supply or HD. I doubt that JAWS has anything to do with it. [JAWS-Users] Re: Inactive Buttons in Jaws 8Re: [JAWS-Users] Re: Delete Key Stroke
I have noticed this to, but in reality, the control is really active, and JAWS is lying. Next time you encounter that, disregard what JAWS says and either press the spacebar or ENTER. When I was using Jaws 7.0, I was able to click on some of the buttons to make actions occur, such as spinning a prize wheel. Now that I have installed Jaws 8.0 I am no longer able to click on these same buttons because there is a message which says button inactive. I don't know what settings to change because I didn't use the merge feature. Does anyone know what settings i should change so that I can spin the prize wheels myself? Thanks. [JAWS-Users] Wouldn't it be lovely!
This morning, as I was reading a document and jotting notes down on te content, I suddenly had a desire to know whether it were possible to have a programme reading one document while focused on another. I even tried switching to pen book and have it read and tried to switch back to word to make my notations and tat fell flat on its face. Oh well! wishful thinking I guess!
