[JAWS-Users] weird problem with jaws 7.1 and IE6 at work

2007-05-28 Thread Sherry Gomes

hello all,

A couple months ago, my work computer was upgraded to JAWS 8. However, I
work in microsoft access all day long, and Jaws was not reading the fields,
and the braille display was not showing the information I needed to be able
to do my job effectively. I asked the IT department to put me back to 7.1,
which had been working fine. But since then, I've had the strangest
internet problem I've ever run across. I only hope I can explain it
properly.

it's as if the way jaws reads links and text on a web page has been
completely turned around. now if I am trying to read a line or more of
straight text, jaws and the braille display are showing it as if each word
is on one line. I literally have to arrow down and down and down from word
to word, instead of jaws reading a line, or the braille display showing 40
cells of text.

For links, instead of ... how to describe this ... well, I often arrow
through links, instead of tabbing, until I am familiar with a web page,
because there is often important information in text above or below links.
So, I'm arrowing down through what should be a list of links, but now the
whole list is being shown horizontally across the braille display and jaws
is reading a series of links like they are all in one line, not one below
the other. For example, I work at Guide Dogs for the Blind, and on our
intranet, we have links to the issues of our internal employee news letter.
Before the jaws upgrade and un-upgrade, the links would appear to me on the
braille display and by jaws reading like this:

January 2007
February 2007
March 2007

and so on. Now they appear like this.

January 2007 February 2007 March 2007

A line of simple text might read like this.

A
line
of
simple
text
might
read
like
this

I usually have to go online everyday to look up information on rehab and
other blindness resources for people who are interested in getting a guide
dog but don't have the mobility or other skills yet needed. This problem is
getting so annoying, I'm having to put people on hold and ask a sighted
coworker to look up info on their computers or in a print resource book they
have. And of course, there is all kinds of important information for
employees on our intra net.

So, if my description makes any sense, does anyone have any ideas about how
to resolve this? Is it something IT will have to do, since I am not an
administrator for my computer at work? I've tried comparing my home
internet settings in configuration manager and jaws verbosity and can't seem
to find something that isn't the same on both.

Sherry

[JAWS-Users] Re: weird problem with jaws 7.1 and IE6 at work

2007-05-28 Thread Sherry Gomes

I had such bad luck with JAWS 8 on my home computer that I can't really say
I like it. Sigh. I wonder if the latest update would fix any of my
problems on the internet at home using JAWS 8 with the first patch, jaws
standard or classic or whatever they call the one that isn't pro.

Boy that's for sure, 7.0 was great. Now for me 8.0 is close but 7.0 was a
fine version.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Yahoo

2007-05-01 Thread Sherry Gomes
I upgraded and find it less accessible. it doesn't read the incoming and
outgoing messages. It also doesn't seem to have a sound to tell me when
someone has instant messaged me, so I don't know someone is trying to get my
attention. This is a pain because I communicate with the moderation team of
a very large list I co-moderate through yahoo messenger. Lots of jaws
cursor use in conversations.

Does anyone use yahoo instant message 8.1, and if you do is it Jaws
friendly?
Does it say your contacts name, read there message coming in, and your

Please let me know, before I update from 7.5 to 8.1?
I'm using Jaws 8, XP home.
Thanks for all the help you can give me.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS and two sound cards

2007-03-10 Thread Sherry Gomes

Hi all,

Hopefully, I can explain this well enough for you to advise me.

I bought a second sound card, when I got my computer a year ago. I disabled
the on board sound and have been running the one I bought. My computer
doesn't have a serial port, so I had to put away my dec talk external and am
running JAWS through he computer speakers along with all the sounds, music,
movies ... anything that needs to be heard. it has all worked fine, except
for some minor sound adjustment issues from time to time.

However, about a month ago I was ripping some audio books from CD to MP3,
using CDex, when suddenly, as soon as CDex would start ripping, JAWS slowed
way down and became extremely shaky and stuttery. Also, the general
computer sounds, such as new mail notification, were very shaky and
slooow as well. I tried using WMP for ripping instead and that seemed
to work for a while. However, this week, I purchased some new CD's and
proceeded to play and then rip them to the PC, using WMP. Even just playing
the CD's made the sound, including JAWS, begin to slow down and stutter a
little. Then I decided just to rip the CD's, again using WMP, and the same
problem I had with CDex began to happen again. I could not use JAWS during
the time I was doing the ripping.

Ok, I know that's a long explanation, but as I've never played around with
my sound, except to set up new sounds for computer functions, I have no idea
how to trouble shoot this problem. Would it make sense to run JAWS through
the other sound card, and if so, how do I set that up and make sure JAWS
uses one sound card and all other sound uses the other? Could there be some
other problem? Should I just enable the original sound card for everything
and disable the one I bought specifically? I still have a number ob audio
books to rip to the computer, and I put all my CD's on the computer and play
all my music that way.

I'm running JAWS 8 standard, not with the newest patch, windows XP home, I
have a 3.--something gig processor, 200 gig hard drive and an external hard
drive where I store most of my music and other files.

Thanks for any advice or tips.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Is version 8 safe?

2007-03-08 Thread Sherry Gomes

I have a lot of problems with jaws 8, using XP home and Jaws standard, not
pro version 8. particularly, most of the problems are on the internet,
seeming to be related to the virtual cursor, because I have to update the
screen constantly. It's particularly maddening when I'm trying to fill out
forms. It seems some people are having these problems and some people
aren't. I wonder what the difference is.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Out Typing Jaws 8.1163

2007-03-03 Thread Sherry Gomes
I always have keyboard echo turned off. I am a fast typist and learned
touch typing too many years ago to say, so having to listen to JAWS echo
every thing I type drives me mad. That's the only solution I can come up
with for you.

Hi Folks,

I know that those of you who are expert keyboarders have complained about
out typing Jaws for a very long time.
Have you speed fingers been able to come up with a fix?
My job requires that I craft some fairly long reports and for the first time
I have found myself waiting for Jaws to catch up to my remedial typing
skills.
FYI, I was trained as a Columbus typist, this means you pick a key and land
on it.
Thanks in advance for any help.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 8 problems

2007-01-15 Thread Sherry Gomes

Hi all,

I'm new to this group. I joined yesterday, hoping I might be able to find
some solutions to the crazy problems I've been having since downloading and
installing JAWS 8. let me get the system stuff out of the way first.

I have a less than a year old PC, with windows XP home, a 3. something gig
processor, 1 gig ram, 200 gig hard drive, JAWS 8 with the patch, standard
version. I use outlook 2003, *not outlook express* and I still have
internet explorer 6.

ok, so all these problems began when I installed jaws 8. I went from jaws 6
to 8, never having jaws 7 on this system.

Email:
I often use control down arrow to read or skim messages by paragraph. Now,
at least half the time, this does not work and jaws just reads the first
paragraph over and over or just says blank, blank.

2. often when I escape out of a message, there is a lag before jaws will
start talking again.

Internet:

these are the big problems

1. On many sites, ones I have used and frequently use, suddenly the virtual
cursor seems not to track correctly and I have to constantly refresh my
screen. so for instance, on my safeway.com site, when I go into forms mode
to type in an edit field, jaws no longer reads the contents of the edit
field to me, unless I go out of forms mode and do insert escape. even so,
it often totally loses focus and goes to a completely different area of the
page.

2. most of the time now, when I activate a link on a web site, jaws ...
well, it's like nothing has focus, and I have to update the screen, insert
escape, to get it to focus on the page. This is so annoying as I have to
insert escape and then tab to get out of wherever it's hanging. Drives me
nuts.

3. Also on the net, most of the time, when I do alt left arrow to go back
to a previous page, jaws does not return me to where I was, but again I'm at
a completely different part of the web site.

MSN messenger

I'm using MSN messenger 6.2 still, again, not wanting to upgrade till I know
I'm going to stick with jaws 8. Ever since installing this version of jaws,
here are my messenger problems.

1. jaws always says, status bar not visible when I use insert page down to
try to read the time a message came in or any other status.

2. I no longer hear the typing sound, though the feature is turned on, and
often I don't know someone has written something when I'm typing in a
conversation window.

In general the whole thing seems sluggish. I have not installed the extra
voices because of this, for people have told me installing those will slow
it down even more. Though I would think my system has enough ram and power
to handle it.

I consider myself a very competent jaws user and have been an access
technology instructor as well. But I am extremely frustrated with this new
JAWS and I'm considering going back to version 6.

Thanks for any tips or advice, or just commiseration!
