[JAWS-Users] Tips and Tricks?
I have XP and JAWS 6.0. I was following the tips and Tricks suggestions under the PC maintenance heading. When I performed the Check Disc , heading number 3, I only put in the edit field chkdsk. When I hit enter, the function seemed to start right away without giving me the option to re-start. After reviewing the instructions I noticed that I should have put in the edit field chkdsk/f. When I tried to perform the instructions this way, I got a dialogue that said, that file can not be found. My question is; should I have used the /F? Did I screw up anything the first way I performed this action? Thank you for any help. [JAWS-Users] Modem problem
Please let me know if this is not a JAWS issue. I have JAWS 6.0 and XP home and DSL. I have no router. After suffering with a disconnect problem for over 6 months, I was told by a technician that my problem is in my computer. My symptoms are that I will be disconnected from the internet for no reason. I have followed JAWS suggestions on settings for OE and IE. I have been on the phone with Bell South numerous times and I have had a technician out to the house 3 times. The last guy hooked his lap top up to the third, new modem and his lap top worked much more efficient than my PC. He feels that there is a problem in my computer that, for some reason, the computer is not communicating well with the modem and is sluggish. My question is; where can I look or go in order to find the proper settings for the modem. I have run disc defrag. disc clean. deleted IE cookies (temporary files) and disc scan. My computer is a Dell, around 2-3 years old. Thanks for any suggestions. [JAWS-Users] Re: RAM
Thank you for this help. I do have DSL not cable. Without looking, I know I have more than 256 m RAM. Probably 384. I am not very experienced with computers. I don't even know how many accounts I have. I am the only user and just have one e mail address. How do I figure out if there are more accounts. Sometimes, I can't get on to the web, as opposed to being kicked off once on. I really appreciate the help and will work on this project. Thanks again! Rich - Original Message - From: Victor Gouveia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, January 26, 2007 11:40 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: RAM Hi Rich, Who ever told you that you needed more ram because your computer kept kicking you off the net should never be let near your computer again, and should be shot for even thinking that all your problems can be solved by getting more ram. That myth went out in the eighties with the advent of knowledge. In any case, if you are sure that you have DSL and not cable high speed internet, I would probably check out your time out settings and the hang up when finished stuff. More than likely, your time out settings are too low. First of all, go into the tools menu and select options. Once there, control+tab over to the connections tab and make sure that hang up when finished sending and receiving is unchecked. Once you've unchecked it, tab over to the apply button, press spacebar, then shift tab over to the o.k. button. Your next step is to check out the time out settings for your various e-mail accounts. In case you're wondering, the time out settings is the time at which point the computer considers your connection inactive and will sometimes disconnect or give yup on downloading a particular message. This sometimes occurs when you get large file attachments. In any case, go back into your tools menu, then into the accounts dialog box. Once there. select the account your are using, if you have multiple accounts, then you'll have to do it for all the accounts individually. If you see a large number of items in the list box, then tab once and right arrow to the mail tab. This will highlight the e-mail accounts that are set up in OE. Sorry to dumb this down for you, but for the benefit of others who aren't as experienced as you may be, they might want to check their settings also. Of course, I have no way of knowing how much experience you have, so better to err on the safe side. Now that you have the account highlighted, tab over to properties and press spacebar. Once in the properties dialog box, control tab over to the advanced tab, tab down to where Jaws says, server ports time out settings. This will be a slider, and you can press page down or page up to either increase or decrease the time out value, respectively. In this case, you want to increase the time out value, so press the page down key until Jaws reads 100%. At this point, tab over to the apply button and press the spacebar., followed by the shift tab to the o.k. button and press it again. Remember, as I said, you'll have to increase the time out settings on all of your e-mail accounts, so don't think you're finished. As for the ram issue, while performance can lag a bit if you don't have enough of it, I believe, and someone may correct me if I'm wrong on this, the minimum required ram for running windows XP is 128 megs of ram, and if you want to run it optimally, 256 and above is recommended. Either way, if you want to check out how much ram you have, go to your desktop, and highlight your my computer icon. Once you've done that, press the applications key and arrow up to properties. This will open up a dialog box with all your system's information. You can either use the jaws cursor, by pressing the minus key on your number pad, or the caps lock+P followed by the caps lock+left bracket to route the jaws cursor to your pc cursor. At this point, you'll be able to arrow down the dialog box and read all the information that is in that dialog box. The other option is to virtualize the window by pressing insert+control+W and reading the information that way. In either case, let us know if this information helps you, and I would be curious to know exactly how much ram you have on your computer for your friend to say that. Please note, that the ram information will be right below the CPU speed, just in case you get bogged down by all the numbers. Once you do this, Jaws may not speak that the applications menu is open, but don't worry, just arrow up or down and you'll find it is open. Once you find that it is open, just arrow up to sort by, then arrow to name and press enter. This will organize your favourites menu into alphabetical order. If, on the other hand you want to place them in folders, I would suggest you do it via the favourites folder on your hard drive, as opposed to doing it through the menus. I just find it easier and less frustrating. To do this, just go into your my computer, under the c: drive, then into documents and settings, then to your name, or the name of the default user on the computer, usually, that's your name, then pressing enter on the favourites folder. At this point you'll be able to create folders and move your existing favourites into existing folders just by cutting and pasting. Again, this is just my preference, and others may find it easier another way. [JAWS-Users] Re: Organize favorites; help
I tried this but could not find the sort by button. While in I.E. I hit the menu bar to get to favorites then hit the application key. This didn't work. So, I hit on organize then hit the application key. Every way I tried, I could not arrow or tab to get the sort by button. Would that button be anywhere else? Thanks again. [JAWS-Users] Re: Help with bookmarks.
I tried using the book marks in Word and the instructions worked well. If it wasn't mentioned, when closing out of Word, you must Save the changes in order for the book marks to stay. Thanks again. I hadn't tried it in MS Word yet. I guess it sounded a bit complicated just reading the directions compared to the temporary book mark in I.E. The step by step instructions are extremely helpful and I copy them in to my JAWS helpful hints folder for future reference. (which is constantly growing) Again, Thanks so much! Rich, I might add that when you do the control shift K to add a place marker in IE, you will have to tab one time to, add, and press enter. Then you can type in the name of the place marker or use the default title. And then press enter.
