[JAWS-Users] Re: FS Demo
You would have installed the FSReader Demo and Training in or after the installation of JAWS6. Likewise, in JAWS7 and JAWS8 it comes as one of the last prompts in the installation. perhaps you did not install it with them? There was some difference made to it at the time of JAWS7.0 - and I ascertained that by going in there myself with JAWS8. Indeed, subject to confirmation or an official denial, it's possible that JAWS8 (as a different and then new version) has a new DAISY training set-up. - Original Message - From: Alan Terrie Robbins [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Jaws-Users-List jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 1:35 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] FS Demo Good evening, I remember a long time ago (maybe JAWS 6 or something) I accessed some of the JAWS training materials with the FS Daisy reader. [JAWS-Users] Re: Reversing Sleep Mode and Kurzweil Problems
Hi Shirley, It is very unlikely that installing version 11 will cause your present scanner not to work. The actual scanning is done by the scanner and its drivers, itself; it is the OCR that Kurzweil does. To attempt to resolve the Kurzweil 1000 JAWS Configuration problem: 1. From anywhere, open Configuration manager with Insert+6 (that's number 6), [and assuming that the Insert key is your 'JAWS' key - The JAWS key is the relevant operator.] 2. Hit Ctrl+o to open; 3. In the list view of files, keep hitting the letter k until Kurzweil 1000 is highlighted. 4. Open it then. (You are opening the Kurzweil1000.jcf.) 5. Hit Alt+s for Set Options; and the letter a for Advanced; 6. There now is a checkbox, sleep mode enabled, checkbox checked. hit spacebar to uncheck it. 7. Tab over to ok your changes. and hit enter. 8. Hit Ctrl+s to save the change, or agree to save on the way out when you press alt+f4 to exit the Configuration manager. And finally: 9. Contact your friendly Kurzweil 1000 tech support to fix your problems associated with K1000 installation, and scanner. - Original Message - From: Shirley [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 1:19 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reversing Sleep Mode and Kurzweil Problems Good evening Everyone! Last Thursday I wanted to scan some information that is not accessible in any other media. It had been several months since I used Kurzweil, but obviously, something is messed up big time. For some unknown reason, when I began to start a scan, I heard a little ding and all speech ceased. I tried everything I could think of to regain speech, but ended up restarting my system. I phoned tech support at Kurzweil, and the nice gentleman there suggested that I download the latest driver for my EPSON scanner. Thanks to a terrific tech support friend at FTP, that was accomplished yesterday. To wipe the slate clean, so to speak, I removed Kurzweil from the control panel, did a disk cleanup, a defrag, then installed Kurzweil again. Initially, it seemed to be working just fine, which thrilled me, and consequently, I followed the steps from the JAWS-Users site to put JAWS to sleep. I think I did it correctly, but unfortunately after refreshing my memory on all the various key functions of Kurzweil, that nasty little ding to begin a scan, totally halted all speech again. In pure frustration, I removed Kurzweil again, but now whenever I alt-tab, Jaws tries to speak, but is abruptly silenced. My question is, How do I reverse the steps of putting JAWS to sleep? I have three versions of JAWS on my computer; 5.1 was the one I used last night, primarily because it has always functioned the best. I have a real aversion to messing with settings, but logic tells me that there must be a way to safely reverse that process. It was suggested that I upgrade Kurzweil from version 7, which is what I have now, to the latest version, which is 11. I am trying to decide now whether to call tech support at Kurzweil again, or wait until my son visits in six weeks. Something tells me that if I upgrade Kurzweil, my scanner will most likely need to be replaced as well. Hopefully, my explanation is understandable. If any of you have advice on any of the above mentioned, please pass it my way. I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance. [JAWS-Users] Re: FS Demo
The setup is the same, but beginning in version 7.1, when you update Jaws from the Jaws interface, if there are any updated daisy material it will be listed in the list of updates. From the start menu, and programs, select Jaws 8.0 sub-menu, and then the FS Reader demo. When the application opens, you can down arrow thru the tree and just press enter on an item and it will be read aloud if there is audio support for that topic. Alternatively, you can press the tab key once and then use standard reading commands for Jaws to read the text. I haven't tried this yet, but I suspect that you could use the RealSpeak voices, or any other Sapi 5 voices for that matter with the say all command. I'll have to agree with the personal phone numbers and addresses on emails. I am the web master for the Missouri Council of the Blind and when I took it over, everybody had their personal information on the web page. That was the first thing I did was to remove all personal information. They don't realize that there are perverts out there and especially knowing that a person is blind, it makes it even more tempting to try and take advantage of them. I can understand business phone numbers and addresses, but not personal info. [JAWS-Users] Re: Question about computer maintenance
Go into my computer and enter on the C: drive. hit w for windows and enter. Hit t until you get to the TMP and Temp folder. Went you enter on either folder temp or temp you can highlight all the files in the list view and delete everything there. If you have a index.dat file highlight everything except that file. For the only way you can delete the index.dat file is to set up another admin user delete it in XP or go to dos in 98c and delete the index.dat file from there by using the command deltree at the C:\windows prompt. The command is in 98C is deltree cookies, Deltree tmp, Deltree tempor~1, and deltree history. Plus there may be others scattered around in various applications. But again, unless you know what you are deleting, I don't advise it. The Internet temp files are located in, c:\documents and settings\(your profile name)\local settings\temporary Internet files. This is where your temp files and cookies are stored. Most of these files provide faster loading of visited web pages. I don't see that it affects the performance of your PC by removing them. David, Last thunderbird portable version is 2.0 RC1 which is much better than earlier, because automatacally accept gmail accounts and is more jaws friendly. [JAWS-Users] Re: Email?
Isn't there some way to make Outlook or Outlook Express access Web mail? I don't have any trouble receiving and reading e-mail from anywhere in the world once I have a connection but only occasionally can I send it. I am told this is because my server only authenticates from my local domain to prevent others spamming from my address. I think this is not absolutely correct since I was able to send email from Houston but certainly when I was traveling through Alberta and British Columbia last summer I could not. I find it very awkward to compose, check and send using those Web interfaces and don't much like even reading and deleting messages that way but if Popcorn and Thunderbird can do it I don't understand why OE cannot. The Internet temp files are located in, c:\documents and settings\(your profile name)\local settings\temporary Internet files. This is where your temp files and cookies are stored. [JAWS-Users] JAWS Not Reading Some Words
This week I have created several rules for folders with sound in Outlook. Ever since I have done this I have noticed that JAWS frequently does not speak words that I know are there. Sometimes it won't be a whole word but just the end of a word. Or at other times, it might even be several words. Does anyone know what my problem might be? I am using JAWS 7.0 and Windows XP. I can't tell that this problem pops up at any certain time or place. It happens all of a sudden when I least expect it. Make sure you have selected Return to the in box and not Open next item I hope this helps. [JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws equivalent for MAC
Joe, we do not need additional screen readers as Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) and above include one right out of the box: VoiceOver. It is as good as JAWS is for Windows, unlike Narrator, which is limited in functionality. Hope that helps. P.S. If you want to join any of the mac lists, please let me know, preferably off list, as we're getting off topic. Thanks. [JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws equivalent for MAC
I'm a web developer with an interest in screen reader issues who uses Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Ubuntu Linux, just so you know where I'm coming from. There is no JAWS for the Mac. For Mac OS 9, there was a screen reader called outSPOKEN sold by Alva, who have now gone out of business, though you may be able to find a second-hand copy. That's the bad news. The good news is Apple built a screen reader called VoiceOver into their new operating system, Mac OS X. For an introduction to VoiceOver see: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/voiceover/ For more details see: http://www.apple.com/accessibility/voiceover/ Key software usable with VoiceOver includes the bundled Apple Mail program, the bundled Safari web browser, Adobe Reader, and (just recently added) ITunes. Microsoft Office for the Mac has not yet been made accessible with VoiceOver, but you can use other software capable of basic editing of Office files. Your message doesn't say what you need to use a Mac for so I'm not sure what software you'd need. Firefox is not yet accessible with VoiceOver, partly because the developer working on this found another job. However, it can be used as a talking browser on the Mac with the excellent Fire Vox extension: http://www.firevox.clcworld.net/ A future version of the free Opera browser will apparently also be usable with VoiceOver: http://my.opera.com/chaals/blog/speaking-out?cid=2506923 Questions about VoiceOver are best addressed to the discussion list for http://macvisionaries.com/: http://macvisionaries.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss_macvisionaries.com Darcy Burnard and Holly Anderson record a podcast for VoiceOver users: http://www.screenlessswitchers.com/ The BBC maintains a collection of Mac accessibility hints: http://www.bbc.co.uk/accessibility/mac/sub_root.shtml PS Just so you know, Mac is written with the M in uppercase and the a and c in lowercase, not MAC all in capitals. Thanks, Chris. I just finally found (after lots of searching) info on VoiceOver. (And you addressed my No. 1 fear--that it's MAC's Narrator.) I will contact you off list if it appears I will be using this for possible work. I've gotten so familiar with using JAWS, it was my hope there was something FS had for MAC, but if not, oh well, onward and upward. Thanks much. I'm not Denny, but I deleted all but one of my temp files using the %tmp% command mentioned on this list a few days ago, and haven't had any bad effects. The one I couldn't delete may have been due to the fact that I was listening to music as I did the deletions, and it was in use. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mich Sent: Friday, April 13, 2007 9:47 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Question about computer maintenance hi Denny I am just wondering. Compacting Outlook Express - WorldStart Computer Tips and Computer Help WorldStart.Com Computer Tips Help Tip #3319 - Compacting Outlook Express Q: I use Outlook Express and an annoying little thing started happening recently. Every time I close OE down, a message pops up that says To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact your messages. This may take up to a few minutes. What does this mean exactly and should I do it or not? Please help! A: This is an excellent question. I too use Outlook Express here at the office and this same thing happened to me awhile back as well. I really didn't know why it just suddenly started happening and to be honest with you, for quite some time, I just hit Cancel on the pop up message. I just wanted to get rid of it. Well, come to find out, I should have listened to the message. Let me explain. We all delete e-mails from our Inbox on a daily basis, don't we? Then most of us probably go on to delete those e-mails out of the Deleted Items folder as well. That way, they'll all be gone for good, right? Well, not exactly. Outlook Express works in the same way as your hard drive when you're trying to delete something from your regular system. Even though we think we've deleted the information completely, it sticks around until it is covered up with something else. So, when you delete the e-mails from your Deleted Items folder, they actually go to the Outlook Express store folder (the .dbx folder) and even though you can't see them, they are still there, taking up space. This is when compacting steps in. When you see the compact message, you may think it's just going to cut down your e-mails in size a little, but do nothing else. Well, in all actuality, when you compact, the e-mails that are now in your store folder are removed. This then allows for extra e-mail storage space and more than likely, faster e-mail service in the way OE opens, closes and runs in general. Now, Outlook Express will automatically compact your messages for you after the 100th time of opening and closing the program. As you can see from the above information, it is essential that you let the compact process go, in order to keep your e-mail program working correctly. So, when the compacting starts, don't interrupt it. Just let it finish. It should only take a few minutes and then your Outlook Express will be up and running just like new. Okay, so what if you get the message when you're trying to shut your computer down for the day? It's not really in your best interest to wait around for it to complete, so what else can you do? Well, you can do the compacting at any time and when it's best for you. You may want to do it on a lunch break or when you're not going to be using your computer for awhile. To get started, go to File and choose Work Offline. This will ensure that no new messages come through while the compact is running. You should also turn off any other programs you have going, but you can keep your firewall and antivirus software on. Now, you should also back up your e-mail before you begin this process, just in case you happen to lose any important e-mails. This is up to you, but read here for a quick way to get the backup done. Once you're done with the backup, go to File, Folder and choose Compact All Folders. Again, once that starts, don't mess with it until it's done. Just let it run and like I said before, it should only take a few minutes. Now, there might be some times when you just want to compact one folder at a time. That's no problem either. To do that, select the folder you want to compact (Inbox, Outbox, etc.) by just clicking and highlighting it in the left side panel on the main page of your Outlook Express. Next, go to File, Folder and select Compact. That will then compact only that one single folder. This should be done if you make big changes to a particular folder. Also, just in case you were wondering; when you do a complete compact on all of your folders, Outlook Express starts with all of your e-mail and news folders and it finishes up with the store .dbx folder, which is where all your deleted e-mails sit. On a final note, you should make it a monthly routine to compact all of your folders, because it really will help with your e-mail's speed and performance and you can't beat that! ~ Erin (Copyright 2004 WorldStart, Inc) - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, April 13, 2007 12:23 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: o e mystry question! [JAWS-Users] Re: o e mystry question!
Others have asserted that when messages are deleted from Deleted Items they are deleted permanently. that's the simple answer. In fact, they are still on the computer but not in a usable form, and it is the compaction of all folders process which removes them entirely. If, for instance, you had a corruption problem with one of your .dbx files - one of the OE folders - you might delete that folder and recover an older version of it which would contain some older messages. It's not a straightforward process, however. - Original Message - From: Cathy Boynton [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, April 13, 2007 5:04 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] o e mystry question! Go to the run command and type %tmp% and press enter. This will put you in an explorer window with a list of non-crucial temporary files, which you can delete. The Internet temp files are located in, c:\documents and settings\(your profile name)\local settings\temporary Internet files. This is where your temp files and cookies are stored. Most of these files provide faster loading of visited web pages. I don't see that it affects the performance of your PC by removing them. Check Disk Go to run and type in, chkdsk /f (drive letter): and press enter. Note the colon after the drive letter. Unlike running a check disk on your C drive, you won't need to reboot for this to perform. 2. Scan Disk Per form the scan disk just as you would on the C drive, but of course highlighting the drive you want to scan as opposed to the C drive. Then just follow the instructions as you would for the C drive. Again, you won't have to reboot for this to run. 3. Defrag Perform as you would for the C drive but again, highlight the drive you want to defrag. One more step that I didn't include in those instructions is cleaning up the temp files. This should be performed on the C drive. Close all applications with the exception of Jaws. Go to run and type in: %temp% and press enter. Note the percent sign before and after temp. Press enter. This will bring up a list of temp files that you can delete. Do a control A to select all. Now do a shift

[JAWS-Users] Re: about my new group created
Interestingly enough that's how all of my groups have been setup for years now. I point this out because the guidelines state that such posts as this are to be run by one of the four moderators on here first. So any further discussion on this subject should be handled off list please folks. If anybody is unclear as to what the guidelines are then visit the home page and look under the page of the same name. We are of the opinion that this list is getting to be so large that the need for cutting down on the off topic stuff is more important than ever before. It is quite often that I approve such things but since none of us were given the chance is the reason for this email. [JAWS-Users] JAWS update?
Hi all, A while back I've reported a problem in JAWS 8.0.423 demo. If I load a page into the virtual cursor the page sometimes doesn't load properly despite it loaded correctly in the browser. I am wondering has this been fixed in the latest update(s)? If so, then I haven't seen it in the what's new page on the JAWS headquarters site. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you. [JAWS-Users] Re: Question about computer maintenance
Lisa, Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you. The, %temp% command will delete the temp files in the root directory. It doesn't remove the Windows temp files or the Internet temp files. As for the cookies, that is up to you whether you want to delete them or not. Deleting them won't do anything to enhance the performance of your PC. I will make them a regular part of my monthly computer maintenance routine. Is cleaning out the temp files the same as deleting temporary Internet files? If it is not, how would I do that? Also I would like to know about cookies, what are they, should they be deleted, and if so how often should I delete them? Now do a shift delete and say yes to, are you sure you want to delete these items? If it fails to delete some items, make sure all of your applications are closed and try again. When finished, do an alt f4 to close. [JAWS-Users] Re: Question about compacting messages in OE
Ugh, this is a considerable problem then. It's happening far more frequently than every hundredth time. Thanks for the info. Do you know if this is the case in every version of OE? I'm running (I believe, since I can't cut and paste) 6.00.29 (and then some other digits I am not sure belong to the same line). I hope that I haven't asked too many questions here, but I would like to keep my computer running smoothly. Thanks again! Take care, Lisa - Original Message - From: Denny Huff To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 10, 2007 2:59 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Question about computer maintenance Lisa, You can perform 3 of the tasks mentioned. 1. Now do a shift delete and say yes to, are you sure you want to delete these items? If it fails to delete some items, make sure all of your applications are closed and try again. When finished, do an alt f4 to close.
