Subject: [JAWS-Users] phone book site

Hello:

Does anybody know of a good sight too look up phone numbers? Dex and I
are fighting, but I'm pretty dense.

Also, has anybody experimented with a browser from the UK called
Webbie? It's spacifically designed for the vision impaired. I'm
playing with it, but it doesn't seem to work any better than the other
browsers. www.webbie.co.uk Thanks

2008-01-13 Thread Marilyn Walker
Carlene, sometimes Google is the quickest way to get a phone number. Use
quotation marks around the name of the person, first name last name outside
the quotation marks write location and see what you get. It works for me.

2008-01-13 Thread Casey McKinney
You might want to try http://www.whitepages.com, or if a business is what
you're looking for, try http://www.yellowpages.com. It's also been known, if
you GOOGLE someone's Name or their Phone number, you can find them that way.
Just type the person's name or Phone number into the search box at
http://www.google.com.

Hope this Helps.

The DLL file is to old (from August 2004).
Please take the following website to download the newest version of LAME
MP3 Encoding Library...
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm

There's the version 3.98. Published from December 2007.

[JAWS-Users] [JAWS] Lame-enc.dll for Gold Wave correction

2008-01-13 Thread Paul Shallbetter
Lois et al,

I couldn't get a download completed from that site. I have the dll
in my library already and haven't had to look for it in awhile.
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?lame_enc

I successfully downloaded this file about five minutes ago. It
decompressed just fine using WinZip.

There you go!

Paul

Re: [JAWS-Users] Gold Wave versus Switch

2008-01-13 Thread Alan & Terrie Robbins
I tried Switch but what I found is there is a different list of file types
to convert from and then to. For instance, I have some M4A files I wanted
to convert to MP3. You can only convert to M4A not from.

Hi Al. I've tried switch but prefer goldwave as you can get scripts for
goldwave but it still works without scripts ok.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Proofreading with JAWS.

2008-01-13 Thread Tony Hernandez
A good text editor to use for this is EdSharp. It's free and open source
and works with rtf. One cool thing is that it uses the microsoft word spell
checker if you have Word installed.

The URL is
http://www.empowermentzone.com/edsetup.exe.

The program is made for regular text editing, but also for writing code if
you're a programmer. If you're not, don't be intimidated by the extra
features in the menus that don't seem to make much sense. I use the program
for medical transcription with no problems at all. Also, because it works
with RTF, you can still use David's suggestions quite nicely.

Where would I get the lame.enc, from?

Al,

GoldWave is super-simple.

Select File menu, then arrow down to "Batch Processing" A dialog box opens.

Select the Add Files button. You can pull files from numerous directories.

Once you've selected the files you want to convert (and they can be
from numerous formats), you tab down to ...Save files as..." and
select mp3 (or whatever file type you want).

Tab again to get to "attributes" and arrow up or down through the
various bitrates and whether you want the files saved as stereo or monaural.

The converted files are saved in the same directories from whence
they came, although I believe that you can specify a "save" directory
in the Options menu.

The only slightly inconvenient thing with Gold Wave is that the
encoder is not included with the software. You need to download
lame.enc, widely available for free download from the Internet and
unzip it into your Gold Wave parent directory. Once this is done
however, the conversion to mp3 is very easy.

Gold Wave is "crippleware," but I really hate that term. The
software is fully functional for a generous number of "processes,"
and batch conversion is considered a single process (i.e. each file
in the batch is not considered a separate process).

At under forty dollars, I think it's a good deal.

Furthermore, Gold Wave does much more than convert files. It is a
complete audio file editing package, which permits recording and
manipulation of sounds. If all you're trying to do is to convert
between file formats, it may be more than you want or need.

Re: [JAWS-Users] removing jaws 451 from the startup menu

2008-01-13 Thread Tony Hernandez
Hello Rosemarie.

I assume you're running windows XP. If you are you can do the following.

1. Go to the start menu and the programs submenu, then navigate to your
startup submenu.
2. Once in the startup submenu, you can navigate to the JAWS 451 item, and
then you need to press the applications key to activate a context menu. It
may not say that you have entered a context menu, but it will be there and
you will be able to arrow through the items in it.
3. One of the options in this menu will be delete, which will delete the
shortcut from your startup submenu. Press enter on it and confirm the
deletion.

You should be all set. If you're not using XP, this won't work. Hope this
was helpful.

[JAWS-Users] removing jaws 451 from the startup menu

2008-01-13 Thread Rosemarie Chavarria
Hi, everyone. I just uninstalled jaws 4.51 because I want to use jaws 5.0
as my screen reader now. How do I remove jaws 4.51 from the startup menu?
I tried going to the task bar properties but am not sure as to what to do
next. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much in advance.
Rosemarie

Re: [JAWS-Users] Proofreading with JAWS.

2008-01-13 Thread David Griffith
Well one work around is to save your documents as RTF documents and have a
separate configuration file for WordPad. You could then use the Classic
scheme with font attributes announced in Speech and Sound Manager and set
punctuation to all.

I get rid of my initial caps problem by letting Word auto correct these
whilst I am typing.

Depends on how complex the text is. I find rtf gives tables and most things
I need. I have routinely used RTF as a file type rather than doc and had
never experienced a problem.

You can then reinsert into word for any any stuff you want to do after proof
reading.

Alternatively you could get a freeware Word Processor to use instead of
WordPad for this task.

David Griffith

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Proofreading with JAWS.

Hi:

I need to do a lot of proofreading and I know there is sounds manager, but I
need certain things that I can't find there; it would be simple to just make
my own scheme, but like I said, I can't find all the settings I need to
change. I thought there was a way to set specific settings for specific
documents, or am I just dreaming? Here is the settings I want:

Punctuation all
Speak first cap in upper case
Say attribute changes

I don't want to change these settings and then have to change them back
again. If I have a document and just name it "proofread" can I just have
specific settings for that document and just delete the text when I'm done
and just use that particular document over again for proofreading.

Finally, if I use print preview, will I be able to tell what will be
hyphenated at the end of a line? There are certain words and abbreviations I
don't want hyphenated so need to check and see if I need to put them on the
next line. I also need to determine what line will be at the bottom of a
printed page. I actually knew this at one time but forgot how to check. Hope
this is a little clear at least. Thanks for any help, Deb.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Trouble with JAWS not reading menu bar items

2008-01-13 Thread David Griffith
Just to cover the obvious - make sure that Jaws screen echo is set to read
highlighted. You can toggle through these settings by pressing insert + S.
The options are none, all and highlighted. If your screen echo is set to
none, the menus will not be read.

Other things to try

Set verbosity to beginner -I had a problem with menu reading once and
adjusting screen echo did not help. For some reason going back to beginner
verbosity solved the problem. I have stayed on this ever since.

Apart from that I would restore default settings by repairing and or
reinstalling. There is a way of restoring defaults without running a repair
but I cannot remember the process. I think it involves retrieving a file and
renaming this as default.jcf. Someone from Sight and sound Tech did this
on my Jaws setup once and solved a problem. Someone else on the list may
know how to do this.

Best of luck

I believe some other folks had this issue but I was not able to find the
discussion in the archives, so I'm gonna ask again. I've got a student who
recently put JAWS 9 (9.0.519 to be exact) on his new laptop which is running
XP Home and when he's using MS Word '03, JAWS fails to read the menu bar
items and the submenu items. Can anyone tell me how to correct this. Like
I said I know it was discussed earlier, so I apologize for reposting.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Gold Wave versus Switch

2008-01-13 Thread Paul Shallbetter

If yu press insert-up arrow on each item, it should read. Not good,
