Hi Kimber,
I only had an e-mail with a virus one time. Avast gives you choices how to
deal with it. One choice always is to delete it and another choice is to
put it in the chest (vault), or quarantine it. I think it is best to
delete it instead of dancing with it another time.

Hi Kimber,
Just remember that the most important thing about the antivirus game is
keeping viruses out of your computer. Avast is the guard at the door.
If Avast encounters a virus, it makes a siren soundand warning message.
It is comforting to know that every e-mail coming into your system is
frisked for a virus.

Hi Kimber,
My experiences with Avast scans is that you have to use the Jaws
Cursor to read the information during the scan. This isn't too hard to
do, it just takes a little practice. You can access the scan
statistics from the scan report from the desktop or the system tray.

Hello. Could someone tell me when I go to scan a particular file and
it says number of I think it said tested files and then it said zero.
What does that mean, and does it tell you when it has finished
scanning?

Hi Kimber,
I have been noticing your progress with using the Avast program, and
glad you are doing so well with this new challenge. You can make
changes to Avast from the System Tray. Enter
insert+F11 and arrow to a line reading Avast on access scanner ---
and hit
the Enter Key. You can arrow up or down to make your choice. If you
select
program settings it will give you a tree-view of the Avast world.
Once you
arrow to a function, then use the Tab Key to read the choices. The
updating
submenu will allow you to both check the virus database and the
program
updates. To activate either one just hit enter and the updating
will
proceed. In the tree-view arrow to the line reading update (basic)
and reference this choice using the Tab Key. You will find check
boxes for making updates automatic or prompted , or manual. The
default is already set to automatic for the virus database, but you
can also make the program updates automatic. As far as doing system
virus scans, I think many people virus scan their system to death.
Remember that Avast moniters all incoming and outgoing messages and
new files for viruses. System scans are very resource intensive.
Avast does not care what version of Jaws you are using. I am running
both the free and pro version of Avast on two different XP machines.
Automatic scheduling of scans can only be done with the pro version
of the program. I hope I have helped you some, but please continue
to ask for further information. I too am still learning about the
Avast system, and your questions also help in my gaining new
knowledge about the program.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Stop JAWS' saying 'superscript

2008-12-10 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Ann,

Below is a message I sent to a person on the list a few months ago.
Hopefully, the information is what you need.

If you want to use superscript and subscript text in Word instead of using
the ordinals, but you don't want JAWS to announce the superscript or
subscript attributes, then you can simply turn off the enhanced edit
choice in JAWS 9. This will work for Microsoft Word as the enhanced edit
mode is checked by default in the Microsoft Word.JCF file. You might not
notice the change right away, but if you type new text or close the program
and start it again, the change will take effect.

Open the Microsoft Word Configuration Manager. Use Insert with F2 to bring
up the list of managers and then press C until you get to the Configuration
Manager. Press enter to open the Microsoft Word.JCF file. Press Alt with S
to bring up the settings menu and then use the down arrow key to find the
Text processing choice and press the enter key. In the resultant dialog
box use the tab key until you get to the enhanced edit support checkbox
and press spacebar to uncheck the box. Use the tab key to move to the OK
button and press enter. Use CTRL-S to save changes and close the Microsoft
Word.JCF file.

The above should stop JAWS from announcing the superscript and subscript
text attributes. The enhanced edit mode is checked by default in the
Microsoft Word.JCF settings but not in the Default.JCF. Of course, if you
want to use ordinals instead of superscript then you can go into the tools
menu in Microsoft Word, use down arrow until you get to the AutoCorrect
choice and press enter. Use the tab key to move to the page tabs. You will
hear JAWS say something like AutoCorrect tab. use the right arrow to move
to the AutoFormat as you type page and tab to the ordinals with
superscript choice and press the spacebar to uncheck it. When you press
the spacebar JAWS should say either checked or unchecked. Use tab key
to move to the OK button and press enter.

 Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Stop JAWS' saying 'superscript

2008-12-10 Thread Ann byrne
Thanks, Brian. I had turned off enhanced editing per your original
message, but the superscript message came up anyway. I haven't
intentionally used a superscript. Not sure why JAWS/Word thinks I
did. I re-typed the line, though, and it isn't saying
'superscript'. What makes Word think something is a subscript or
superscript, do you know??? Obviously, I don't. (lol)

Much thanks.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using Jaws to retreive Word serial number number

I am going to have to restore my operating system from the original disks.
I have a copy of Word 2003 that came with a long serial number.
How do I find the serial number on the computer to try to keep the key
active when I restore the operating system?

Thanks.

Clifford

The correct keystroke is Insert-Shift-R, not Insert-Control-R. You can
verify this in the JAWS 10 What's New option of the Help menu.

The correct keystroke is Insert-Shift-R, not Insert-Control-R. You can
verify this in the JAWS 10 What's New option of the Help menu.

What is the new keystroke to reply to someone privately in an email if

 I guess the version 8 doesn't work for 9 the jaws key-shift-R?

 Thanks,

Hmmm,

I tried it and heard, press twice quickly to gain focus to the field. Do I
press the same key combo again? I did it said..
not in an open message..

if I just pressed the insert-shift-r one time, I get the first message and I
go ahead and reply then I try to send it and my address book pops up saying,
show more names...so I have to cancel.

ok, well whoever told me first with the control key is correct..

However you have to press while the email is open all of them,
ins-control-shift-r for it to work. I just did a test email and it worked
and jaws said edit as soon as I pressed those keys..

[JAWS-Users] Editing Audio Tracks Problems

2008-12-10 Thread Marvin Hunkin
Hi.
well, got some cds, that i had from one of my relatives, then burned to a cd
and converted to mp3.
now, tried editing the track information, so ti would say the track name,
artist, album, and not just unknown artist, etc.
well will paste a message below.
could not edit the track information.
and ripped a audio cd, and got jaws 10, and windows media 11. and it gave me
the information, when i was editing it in windows explorer.
and the track, artist, album, cane up.
so, can any one help.
another question is, is there any software, which can repair corrupted or
damaged mp3 files, as do not have the original cd, any more.
only the ripped mp3 copy.
a few tracks, muffled, or warped.

and here's the message.

Hi.
well, went to my track in windows media player, stopped the file, as loaded
it from windows explorer.
well, went to the properties tab, went to content.
tried to edit the information, but it would not let me change any thing,
like the title , artist, album.
so how do i get to edit my audio tracks, as mp3, instead of saying unknown
artist?
can you help.
cheers Marvin.

ok, well whoever told me first with the control key is correct..

However you have to press while the email is open all of them,
ins-control-shift-r for it to work. I just did a test email and it worked
and jaws said edit as soon as I pressed those keys..

 Hmmm,

I tried it and heard, press twice quickly to gain focus to the field. Do I
press the same key combo again? I did it said..
 not in an open message..

if I just pressed the insert-shift-r one time, I get the first message and

I go ahead and reply then I try to send it and my address book pops up
saying, show more names...so I have to cancel.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Stop JAWS' saying 'superscript

2008-12-10 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Ann,

Superscript characters are written on a line slightly above the character
beside them and usually in a smaller font size. Subscript characters are
written on the base of the line slightly lower than the character beside
them. In your example of 23rd, if the r and d are superscript then they
will be slightly above the top of 23. If they were subscript then the r and
d wouldn't extend as high from the base of the line as the 2 and the 3.
Again, if you prefer the regular letters over the use of superscript or
subscript, you can make that choice in Word. Go into the tools menu, use
down arrow until you get to the AutoCorrect choice and press enter. Either
use the tab key to move to the page tabs or use CTRL-Tab to move focus to
the auto format as you type page of the dialog box. Use tab key to move
to the checkbox for using ordinals with superscript and press spacebar to
uncheck the box. Use tab key to the OK button and press spacebar to accept
the change. After doing this change the r and d in the word 23rd will
be even with the numbers.

Take care.

Thanks, Brian. I had turned off enhanced editing per your original
message, but the superscript message came up anyway. I haven't
intentionally used a superscript. Not sure why JAWS/Word thinks I did.
I re-typed the line, though, and it isn't saying 'superscript'. What
makes Word think something is a subscript or superscript, do you know???
Obviously, I don't. (lol)

Much thanks.

Ann

[JAWS-Users] Outlook Express and Jaws 10

2008-12-10 Thread Lisa
Hello all,
I recently installed jaws 10 on my computer, and I'm having a little problem
with it in outlook express. I'll give you an example. When I read through my
emails with jaws 9 I can hit my delete key, and the next email will open up and
jaws 9 will immediately start reading the email. Now with jaws 10 when I'm
done reading an email and I hit my delete key jaws 10 just sits there, and it
doesn't start reading automatically like jaws 9 did. When the next email opens
up and jaws 10 is just sitting there not reading I have to hit my up arrow key,
and jaws 10 will then start reading the email. This is very annoying, so I
have been going back to jaws 9 to read my emails. Does anyone know what might
be going on, and how I can fix it? Maybe this is a bug in jaws 10 I'm not
sure. I'm running windows XP home edition with service pack 3, and jaws 10.
Any help with resolving this issue will be very much appreciated!
Take care,
Lisa

Lisa, you may not like this so called failure to auto open e mails but I
think I will. I have tried to stop that auto opening in jaws because I did
not want to open e mails until I knew who they were from. Maybe it is an
improvement rather than a glitch. marilyn

Insert plus shift plus R does work correctly in JAWS nine. The message
has to be open and the To field will have the persons name in it.

I just sent David an email using the email he sent to the list.

 David,

I have JAWS nine and I just did insert, shift and R on an open message
and it put your name in the to field.

When I press that reply key, it says your name and your email address

What is the new keystroke to reply to someone privately in an email

 I guess the version 8 doesn't work for 9 the jaws key-shift-R?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Jaws to retreive Word serial number number

2008-12-10 Thread Brian Lee

Hello,

You might consider downloading and installing Belarc Advisor. When you run
the program you will have a complete profile done for your system. Office
keys are included. When Belarc gives its report you can use the find
command to look for the Office key. You can download the program from the
following link:

http://www.download.com/Belarc-Advisor/3000-2094_4-10007277.html?tag=mncol

There is a download now link on the page.

Hello Kimber;

did you wait until the memory test was complete? and then close the web-page?

now, you should be able to use the applications key, and arrow to settings and
press enter.

Tab until you hear, enable skins for simple user interface check box checked. Press spacebar
to uncheck it.

now tab ok, press enter.

now, close avast, and re-start the program.

before the next one takes place. or you may have just missed the announcement, while you

avast always announces an update with speech. It will say 'your virus database has been updated'

that is one of the things I like about avast, that it has that feature so you can actually hear

Hi Kimber,
I have been noticing your progress with using the Avast program, and glad you are doing so well
with this new challenge. You can make changes to Avast from the System Tray. Enter

insert+F11 and arrow to a line reading Avast on access scanner --- and hit
the Enter Key. You can arrow up or down to make your choice. If you select
program settings it will give you a tree-view of the Avast world. Once you
arrow to a function, then use the Tab Key to read the choices. The updating
submenu will allow you to both check the virus database and the program
updates. To activate either one just hit enter and the updating will
proceed. In the tree-view arrow to the line reading update (basic) and reference this choice
using the Tab Key. You will find check boxes for making updates automatic or prompted , or
manual. The default is already set to automatic for the virus database, but you can also make the
program updates automatic. As far as doing system virus scans, I think many people virus scan
their system to death. Remember that Avast moniters all incoming and outgoing messages and new
files for viruses. System scans are very resource intensive. Avast does not care what version of
Jaws you are using. I am running both the free and pro version of Avast on two different XP
machines. Automatic scheduling of scans can only be done with the pro version of the program. I
hope I have helped you some, but please continue to ask for further information. I too am still
learning about the Avast system, and your questions also help in my gaining new knowledge about
the program.

Roger

What is the new keystroke to reply to someone privately in an email if
it's like from a list using Jaws 9 plus?

I guess the version 8 doesn't work for 9 the jaws key-shift-R?

Thanks,

Patricia

hi kimber,
avast always announces an update with speech. It will say 'your virus
database has been updated' or something along that line.
that is one of the things I like about avast, that it has that feature so
you can actually hear when an update takes place.

chrissy

Yeah, you'll love avast, Kimmie. It doesn't slow your computer down
like AVG seems to.

Hi Kimber,
I have been noticing your progress with using the Avast program, and glad
you are doing so well with this new challenge. You can make changes to
Avast from the System Tray. Enter
insert+F11 and arrow to a line reading Avast on access scanner --- and
hit
the Enter Key. You can arrow up or down to make your choice. If you
select
program settings it will give you a tree-view of the Avast world. Once
you
arrow to a function, then use the Tab Key to read the choices. The
updating

submenu will allow you to both check the virus database and the program
updates. To activate either one just hit enter and the updating will
proceed. In the tree-view arrow to the line reading update (basic) and
reference this choice using the Tab Key. You will find check boxes for
making updates automatic or prompted , or manual. The default is already
set to automatic for the virus database, but you can also make the
program updates automatic. As far as doing system virus scans, I think
many people virus scan their system to death. Remember that Avast
moniters all incoming and outgoing messages and new files for viruses.
System scans are very resource intensive. Avast does not care what
version of Jaws you are using. I am running both the free and pro version
of Avast on two different XP machines. Automatic scheduling of scans can
only be done with the pro version of the program. I hope I have helped
you some, but please continue to ask for further information. I too am
still learning about the Avast system, and your questions also help in my
gaining new knowledge about the program.

Roger

Hello Kimber;

did you wait until the memory test was complete? and then close the
web-page?

now, you should be able to use the applications key, and arrow to
settings and press enter.

Tab until you hear, enable skins for simple user interface check box
checked. Press spacebar to uncheck it.

now tab ok, press enter.

now, close avast, and re-start the program.

Good morning. I am in a bit of trouble here. I can't find where to
start
avast, do I go into the system tray? if so, I tried that, but then
jaws
went to the simple interface, and that's where it stopped talking. i
did

what you said or the scripts said to use the application key and find
the settings, but I couldn't find where to uncheck the skins. Your
help

would be much appreciated and sorry if I keep coming back, but I'm not
used to avast, and I don't want to go back to AVG as it's definitely
not

jaws friendly. thanks.

Good morning Kimber!

I'm not using Avast, however, I believe the default is, to have Avast
update automatically.

you could also update manually, if you wanted.
also, I'm not sure if your aware, there is some helpful tips on the
jaws-users program page, to make avast a little more jaws friendly.
