Re: [JAWS-Users] start up issues on my laptop
Hi Kate and Don, Many thanks for your suggestion. I do have CCleaner installed on my computer, but I was thinking that you used other software to scan the registry. I often run CCleaner to remove junk from my computer, but I guess that I will have to try and run the registry scan. Again, thanks for your help. Lennie At 09:01 PM 12/26/2008, you wrote: I am not an expert in registry cleaning applications. When I needed to use one, I flipped a virtual coin to choose between Advanced System Care 3 and cCleaner. Both of these programs have been discussed here recently. I happened to choose Advanced System Care 3. I was impressed by what the program can do. Especially since it fixed my problem! The program is not as accessible as people on this list thought. I have enough vision to see the screen if I magnify it at least 3x and concentrate on a small area. All of the buttons you can tab through are stacked in the same location. The program makes only one visible to sighted users, but they are still available to activate by the keyboard. All features are checked and performed on the free program. I think the free program has a limited number of times that a repair can be done without upgrading. After running the scan and repair several times, the program now scans for problems, but only reports the number of problems found. I can no longer perform a repair. The paid version also lets you turn off features and customize what gets cleaned (like IE passwords and other application settings). It also made Vista forget what my default internet browser and mail programs were set to before running the repair. I have tried cCleaner since then and I am impressed by its capability to clean the registry. Advanced System Care 3, in contrast, does a whole list of optimizations as well as clean up the registry. cCleaner is very accessible. Unfortunately, I did not roll back the registry to its corrupted state just to see if cCleaner could fix my problem as well. I was just happy that it was fixed and did not want to break it again! So I have no idea which one is more effective. good luck! It used to be JAWS friendly. the hardest thing was setting the delivery time, and that wasn't too bad. You can shop from a previous list that you made or shop by aisle, or just type in an item and find it that way. Neutritional info was available too. Wrong scripts; for a different program. why uninstall? ouicktime is needed for example to play certain files.it never installs itself automatically, so at one point you must have accessed a file that required the use of QT and okay its installation. you can prevent it from loading with every start up by disabling it via msconfig with the run command. regards chrissy Flor Lynch wrote: If it happened recently, then a system Restore to the previous or a good Restore point may get rid of it. Hi all; I have 10.0 and XP home. I just noticed something that appeared in my system tray called Quick time. When I clicked on it I couldn't find an un-install button. I checked add or remove programs and did not see it listed. What the heck is it? How did it get on my system tray? and How do I get rid of it? Thanks for the advice. Re: [JAWS-Users] Removing processes on vista machine
There are a few ways to accomplish what you are wanting to do. One good way is to use Windows Defender to select what programs should or should not start with Windows. You can also use the Windows Configuration Utility, or if you feel safe working in the registry then you can find all of the run areas in the current user and the local machine hives and remove the appropriate keys. I recommend that you use the Windows Defender method first. You should only delete keys and values from the Windows registry if you are sure of what you are doing. it is also a good idea to backup the Windows registry if you make any changes to it. Let me know if you need more information, but I will give steps below for using Windows Defender for stopping programs from starting with Vista. If you have your control panel set to classic view then do the following: 1. Open the control panel from the Windows start menu. 2. Open the "performance information and tools" choice. 3. Use tab key to move to the "manage startup programs" link and press the enter key. 4. Use tab key a few times until you hear a combo box announced with the category being "startup programs." Use tab once more to move into the list of programs. 5. Use up and down arrow keys to move between the programs that are currently starting with your Vista operating system. If JAWS says "not selected" then just keep using the arrow key in the given direction until you hear the programs. you might try Alt with down arrow to see if this will let you move more easily using the up and down arrow keys. 6. When you have a program selected you can use the tab key to move to a read only box that gives information about the program. Use CTRL-home to move to the top of the read-only box and then you can use down arrow to read the contents of the text. You will be given such information as program name, display name, description, publisher, digital signature, file type, start up value, file path, size and version, date installed, startup type, location, classification, whether or not it ships with the operating system and spynet voting info if applicable. 7. Use tab key to move to various buttons including a "disable" button. Press spacebar on the "disable" button to disable the program from starting with Windows. 8. Use Apply, OK, etc. to complete the process. If you are not using the control panel in the classic view then get to this same dialog box by doing the following: 1. Open the control panel. 2. In the edit box type "stop a program from running" (don't include the quotes). 3. use tab key to find the link "stop a program from running at startup" and press the enter key. 4. Use tab key until you get to the list of running programs. Although the above is a longer process than using the configuration utility, using Windows Defender as shown above gives more information about the program you are enabling or disabling. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Beyond Surf's Up: Need tips for advanced real-worldsurfing
I go past the nav bar with the skip to content page links. I use the same page inks a lot. Now, O don't code all of this stuff on my site although I probably should to make it easier for a jaws user, or any other user to navigate it. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Deborah Armstrong Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2008 4:07 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Beyond Surf's Up: Need tips for advanced real-worldsurfing I am an experienced user, so I'm looking for tips more than perfect solutions. Do any of you others have this problem? Web pages seem to be getting less convenient. I'm not talking about inaccessible. You can read everything fine -- just inconvenient. Kind of like putting the wheelchair ramp out back with the dumpsters instead of near the building's front door. It used to be that when I googled for information, I'd find a variety of mailing list archives with interesting posts. Or I'd find pages that individuals created about that particular topic. But today, I tend instead to find wikis and web forums, and sites with so many ads that I have to read hundreds of lines of irrelevant data only to discover a single line of content, like "no search results matched your query"! In wikis, half the links you select go to a page, with the same pleuthora of links and the message: "You have followed a link to a page that does not exist yet." If it doesn't exist, why do links take me there, anyway? I'd feel more charitable about contributing to a wiki, if they didn't insist on wasting my time! For another example, web forums will have more lines of text devoted to trivia about who the user is, how many times he's posted, and when he joined the forum and whether he's online, rather than what content his message contains. And often the post turns out to be something like "I need the same information" or "That's a good idea." This is the sort of thing you might say on the phone to a friend, but wasting bandwidth posting it seems really nuts. Ad-supported sites don't seem to have any simple way to skip to the content directly. For a good example, just look at amazon.com. If they hadn't invented amazon.com/access, I would've stopped shopping at amazon a long time ago. But ten years ago, way before JAWS had quick keys, amazon was a pleasure to navigate with screen access! And it worked fine without any fancy virtual cursor! Web forums are a nightmare. Every forum page has a list of posting rules, thread tools and other clutter that I wish were in one place and not on every single page. I don't want to reply, change my font size or submit the post to digg -- I just want to READ the darned thing! I don't care if smileys are on, and how many cups of coffee the user had, I want to know what he has to say! Yet, other blind people are regularly accessing these things and not complaining, so what am I missing? For example, the Hadley School for the Blind and the AFB both have active web forums. There is a JAWS wiki, though the only thing I could actually find in it was a list of JAWS mailing lists. And many blind people put up blogs on sites full of advertising! And even with blind bloggers' sites, you have to skip past reams of the irrelevant! I am familiar with the quick keys for surfing of course. But they rarely work in this Brave New Web-world. On websites devoted to product reviews and downloads, using H or number keys to move between headings takes me to headings with words like "recommended" "other categories" and "download" only it's a link to download something I'm not interested in. Try the winamp page for example -- it's easy to download a trial version of the commercial product by mistake. On wikis, headings only appear if the user who edited that page added the appropriate HTML code. There are lots of links, visited and unvisited links and many promising other page elements you can quick-key around. But most of those wiki-links lead nowhere. It's like being in one of those text-adventure mazes! You are enticed by promises of cattegories, but how can you tell which lead to only empty pages? I had planned to contribute to the JAWS wiki but after spending fifteen minutes and finding nothing, I decided that a well-written contribution belonged elsewhere! And on web forums, it is rare to see a heading at all. In blogs, you see headings only if the blogger is a screen reader user, and even then not all the time. I guess some of the readers have more patience than I do. Typing N to navigate to the next non-link text, usually takes me to an ad. I can learn all about increasing my sex appeal or how to get a stuffed gorilla absolutely free, but it's not the way to learn about a particular product I'm researching. Often a page will have a full and fascinating product review, but I actually have to read the entire text to locate it. Typing M t
[JAWS-Users] Encrypted Excel worksheet
Has anyone ever used an Excel spreadsheet that has been encrypted and password protected? I have financial spreadsheets that I have used for years that I thought would be smart to protect from prying eyes. I used the "encrypt document" option in the "prepare" submenu in Office 2007. I have created an encrypted XLS file and an XLSX file that is in XML format. All of this works great. But, if I press F2 on a cell, JAWS 9 or 10 can not read anything! If I type in something or change the cell contents and press Enter, the contents is changed. FS Tech Support was not able to help and suggested there was not a problem with any other users. They recommended that I uninstall and reinstall MS Office. Since MS Office was preinstalled on this computer and I don't readily know where the CD might be, I simply performed a repair and then changed the Office components and right clicked on the top level of the tree and selected "run all from my computer". This did not, as I suspected, solve the problem. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas how to fix this? [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Microsoft Word 2002
I am trying to set up a back up computer with JAWS on it. However, this computer has Microsoft Word 2002 installed on it. When reading a document in Word I am used to pressing Page down or Page up to determine what page I am on. But when using JAWS in Word 2002, it was not able to do this. It also did not produce the tone to indicate when I was at the top or bottom of a document. Does JAWS interface well with Word 2002? I have been using Word 2003 for a quite a while with no difficulties. I am using JAWS 8 with windows XP home.
