Re: [JAWS-Users] anti-virus software compatible with JAWS

2009-03-05 Thread Chris Hallsworth
My comment is that you got a virus because AVG free only offer *basic* virus
protection. Note the basic there. With AVG Internet Security you have
complete virus/spyware/rootkit protection. So to me you should give it
another try (a 30 day free trial is available). Up to you of course, but
with AVG Free you only get basic protection and I'm not sure if people
actually realize that.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] anti-virus software compatible with JAWS

Hi, folks-
Question first:Can anyone recommend an anti-virus program that is
compatible with JAWS besides AVG 8.0? I am using JAWS 7.0 and want more
coverage than the free version of AVG, which recently let in a virus which
reeked havoc on my laptop . I am willing to pay for a program, but lost
confidencein AVG and don't want to purchase coverage from them at this
time.

Thanks, Erin

  Hello Stu,

The link on the web page for viewing the March descriptive video service
schedule does open a PDF file. It is a 26-page untagged document. I
suggest that if you are using Adobe Reader that you set it up to open PDF
files on web pages in Adobe Reader and not by using the Internet plug-in.
If you are interested in doing so then open Adobe Reader and press CTRL-K to
bring up preferences. A list of 26 categories will be shown. Press the
letter I until you hear the Internet category choice. Use the tab key to
move to a checkbox that determines if the Adobe Reader opens PDF files by
using the Internet plug-in or in the Adobe Reader itself. Use spacebar to
uncheck the item if it is checked. This will associate your Adobe Reader
with PDF files linked to on the Internet. After removing the checkmark from
the checkbox use tab key to the OK button and press enter.

After making the above change, pressing enter on a link like the one that
points to the March schedule should open the document in your Adobe Reader
instead of in your browser. If you prefer to download the file instead of
having to open it with the link each time, you can move to the link and
either use the application key or a right mouse click simulation to bring up
a context menu. Use down arrow in the menu to the save target as choice
and press enter key. The dialog box asking if you want to open or save the
document should appear. Use tab key and move to the save button and press
enter. In the resultant save in dialog make note of which folder the file
will be saved in. use tab key to move focus to the save button and press
enter. You can then navigate to the downloaded file and open it. When you
open the file you will be told that the file needs to be tagged and prepared
for reading. Use tab key to move to the start button and press enter.

In the March schedule, shows are listed in order first by date and then by
time. Use up and down arrow to move through the displayed page. use
CTRL-Page Down and CTRL-Page Up to move a page down or a page back up at a
time. You can use insert with page down keystroke to read a status line,
which will show you the current page number that you are reading and the
total pages in the document. Use caps lock with page down to read the
status if you use a laptop configuration.

In this particular document, using the find command will quickly move you
to the date you want to view. Dates, days and years are shown in 2-digit
format, each separated by a slash. use CTRL-F to bring up the find dialog.
If you are wanting to view programs listed for March 29th, you would first
bring up find using CTRL-F and then type in 03/29/09 (without quotes).
Press the enter key to activate the find command. After waiting a couple
seconds use function key 6 to move to the found text. Each time you perform
a find command, use F6 to move to the found information. You will be told
when no entries are found, but for this document you would know not to look
  for anything past 03/31/09.

  Take care.

Actually, the models that come with solid state HD's are no cheaper than
the ones that come with mechanical HD's. Because Intel has introduced a
new Atom processor, you can get great deals on netbooks with the older
processor. Machines that sold for over $400 a month ago are now selling
for under $300. I have seen the Acer Aspire 1 for as low as $269.

Actually, I find myself doing mostly the latter. The JAWS cursor can go
to areas of the screen that the PC cursor doesn't, so sometimes the

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS cursor and PC cursor

2009-03-05 Thread Lisa Belville

Yep. I route JAWS to PC all the time.

On the other hand, if I know there's something the JAWS cursor is seeing
that the PC cursor should have focused on, I'll route PC to JAWS as a way to
make it focus on the item if I can't get focus restored by alt+tabbing.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS cursor and PC cursor

2009-03-05 Thread Jack
And this is a personal choice, but I turned off the screen track virtual
cursor. With this turned off, the Jaws cursor and the mouse cursor can
move independently of one another. So, if I'm needing to find something on
the screen with Jaws, but someone sighted is looking at the monitor, the
information on the screen doesn't move with the Jaws cursor. The person
using the mouse has control over that.
It makes it easy if you're both on the same screen.

  Take care.

me the tabbing didn't work properly when I use JAWS cursor mode.

Sincerely,
Jack Hu

Yep. I route JAWS to PC all the time.

On the other hand, if I know there's something the JAWS cursor is seeing
that the PC cursor should have focused on, I'll route PC to JAWS as a way to
make it focus on the item if I can't get focus restored by alt+tabbing.

Actually, I find myself doing mostly the latter. The JAWS cursor can go
to areas of the screen that the PC cursor doesn't, so sometimes the
control that you seek can be found a lot easier with the JAWS cursor.

This brings a question to mind. Everyone knows about routing Jaws to
 PC.
But is their any use for routing PC to Jaws with insert numpad plus? In
the 10 years I've been using Jaws, I have yet to find a reason that this
key command has any use. What the heck is it for?

 Hi,

The PC cursor is the one that moves with you when you type. The JAWS
cursor is associated with the Mouse cursor. It can go some places that
 the PC cursor cannot.

 Hi,
I am not so familiar with JAWS. Can someone tell me the difference
 between
JAWS cursor and PC cursor? It seems hard for me to know which should
 be
 used
 and when?

Re: [JAWS-Users] anti-virus software compatible with JAWS

2009-03-05 Thread Erin Pruitt
Andy- Are you currently using the full package of Norton? I was looking at
purchasing that, and have found it priced anywhere from $16.99-39.99. I'm not
sure if I have to by it directly from Symantec or if I can purchase it for a
cheaper price elsewhere. Also, do you know off-hand how to check how much RAM
is available. I learned that once but haven't used that command enough for it
to have stuck in my brain.
Thanks, Erin

I dislike comments like the one below. I have used norton since the
days of Norton utilities for DOS, and have had no problems. It is kind
of a resource hog at times, but many of them are. If you have a system
that has less than 1 GB of RAM, you will notice significant sluggishness
when Norton is doing a scan, so you just schedule the scan for the
middle of the night, or some time when you are not using the machine.

 Hi, folks-
Question first:Can anyone recommend an anti-virus program that is
compatible with JAWS besides AVG 8.0? I am using JAWS 7.0 and want
more coverage than the free version of AVG, which recently let in a
virus which reeked havoc on my laptop . I am willing to pay for a
program, but lost
confidencein AVG and don't want to purchase coverage from them at
this
 time.

 Thanks, Erin
