Re: [JAWS-Users] windows mail
well heres what I was told to do. That's because you are not connecting to your e-mail server for some server. Maybe its you, maybe it has nothing to do with you. Sometimes, when your server goes down, you have to reset your modem. If you have a power switch on your modem, turn it off for about 15 seconds and then turn it back on. This will reset your modem. Not a bad idea to disconnect your modem from your computer at both ends and plugging back in to make sure your connections are secure. If you don't have a power switch on your modem, simply unplug it for the same 15 seconds and plug it back in. Reboot your computer and hope for the best. If this doesn't work, check with your company to see if they are having problems in your area. Obviously, you don't have that problem right now or you wouldn't writing this message. - Original Message - From: "Derek Roberts" To: Sent: Friday, June 05, 2009 5:32 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] windows mail Ah so the username or password must be messed up. [JAWS-Users] MICROSOFT OFFICE PROBLEMS
HI. well need some help. some one may have run into this problem using word 2007 or word 2003. i am using word 2007. i want to have numbered points 1,2,3... i go to the number group box and select 1,2,3, but instead of getting 1 for the first list item, i get i, ii, v, etc. now how to change this to 1,2,3... also when i arrow down using the down arrow to read through the text. instead of saying the line of text on one line or one sentence. it seems to break half way through and start on the next line. how can i make sure that the sentence is all on one line, and then have the next sentence on the next line, or have the text wrap around properly. any one can give me some steps how to fix this? cheers Marvin. Re: [JAWS-Users] Terminal programs update
Thanks for the update on terminal programs. Do you have these scripts available on the web somewhere? I would be interested in using them to some degree. Just curious, are all your Linux hosts somewhere else on the network, or are you running Linux locally on one of your computers as well? I am finding Vinux pretty attractive! I am considering getting a second life and purpose for an old computer. My kids complain that it runs XP too slow. Vinux is free at: vinux.org.uk Don Marang - Original Message - From: "Deborah Armstrong" To: Sent: Thursday, June 04, 2009 6:13 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Terminal programs update Back in December, I posted a long tutorial on Tera Term with JFW. The purpose of this post is to update it. If you don't care about terminal programs, you need not read this. Tera Term currently is at version 4.62. This still works well with JAWS, and nothing about cursor tracking or the terminal window has changed. Be sure to choose the compact installation -- the other choices install a lot of extra utilities, that though they work fine with JFW, tend to clutter up the system tray and steal focus. The website is still http://ttsh2.sourceforge.jp/ If you google, you will find lots of variants of this program, but the 4.62 version on the Japanese sourceforge site listed above is the most complete and current. You still need to make the same adjustments to improve speech and Braille friendliness. Set the cursor to horizontal line, and not block which is the default. Turn off the scroll buffer and set the window size to 80 columns by 24 rows. Other window sizes are the default and at least for me, they tend to make the screen unnecessarily harder to read, especially with Braille. The scroll buffer, if enabled by mistake, which is the default really messes up the updating of the JFW offscreen model. If your JAWS cursor shows you items onscreen that simply are not there, you probably have the scroll buffer enabled. Remember that even if you don't scroll through the scroll buffer, it messes up JAWS, so just keep it OFF! If you wish to see what you previously did it is better to keep a log file, and Tera Term can easily automatically log all your activity. The Tera Term support group which I previously mentioned seems to have disappeared off the net. Another free option for telnet/ssh access is PuTTY at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html The latest release version (beta 0.60) is considered quite stable. The window size and scroll buffer seem to interfere much less with JFW than these same features in Tera Term, but it's a bit tricky to get cursor tracking working well with PuTTY. By default, the PuTTY cursor is also a block, and by default it blinks. If you set the cursor to horizontal line (called "underline" in the interface) JFW will think you are one space to the right of where the cursor is actually located. You can make JFW track the default block cursor by turning off the blink (which causes Braille to jump around randomly) and creating a PuTTY.JCF that has these items: [OSM] CaretSearch=255 EditPromptSearch=2 TrackFocusRect=1 CaretTimeOut=1000 VertCaretMinY=25 VertCaretMinX=1 VertCaretMaxY=90 VertCaretMaxX=4 HorizCaretMaxY=4 HorizCaretMinX=4 HorizCaretMaxX=14 [Highlight Colors] 0/000255000=1 0/187187187=1 18700/0=1 The problem with hacking up a JCF file for PuTTY and its default block cursor is that the cursor sometimes isn't tracked accurately in text editors, so if you edit a lot, you might prefer to set it to underline and deal with the cursor being off by one. At least when the cursor is set to underline, JAWS reliably knows where it is, even though it is also reliably off by one space. I think setting the TrackFocusRectangle thing in the JCF file, which is what JFW does for Excel, is not the most reliable way to find a cursor, but it might be the way to track a cell. I've also found it helpful to set my terminal to VT100 when I'm editing, both in PuTTY and on the host, since something about the Xterm settings in PuTTY confuses JAWS when rapid cursor changes occur. However if you are reading lots of text-based dialog boxes in Linux, you'll see garbage characters with the VT100 emulation so you'll want to switch back to Xterm for that. For what it is worth, I don't have these troubles if the host is BSD instead of Linux. And this trouble with garbage is not caused by JAWS, since sighted users confirm that the garbage JFW reads is the exact garbage Linux is displaying. Somehow, Linux does not have a terminal definition that is exactly meshing with the terminal definition built in to PuTTY or Tera Term though the problems and symptoms are slightly different. In general, if rapid cursor changes flummox JAWS and you have a good internet connection, be sure your terminaln is VT100. If garbage is onscreen visually, and you are using Tera term, you are out of luck. I

Re: [JAWS-Users] Omni Page Pro 17
Hello Deborah, Thanks for the information on the older version of OmniPage. I an using 15 and the information that you posted is the most I have ever read concerning OmniPage. I have been using 15 since it became available, but to be honest, I have struggled with it for quite a while until I can use it reasonably well now, but I still have a lot to learn with this OCR software. Please do let us know about OmniPage Pro 17 and is it really necessary to upgrade from 15? Any additional information that you can provide will be enormously appreciated! Lennie At 06:58 PM 6/4/2009, you wrote: I am supposed to be getting 17 as soon as my employer finishes the paperwork. However, I used to be the tech support lead for OmniPage, so I know the older versions well. Meanwhile, for those of you with 14, 15 or 16, try these ideas: * Delete or rename the JAWS scripts. They are for OmniPage 10 and will not work as well as the default scripts for using the program. * If OmniPage doesn't seem to work with your scanner, stop trying and scan using another program. OmniPage just calls the scanner manufacturer's third-party drivers, and manufacturers often make crummy ones. Scan and save the results as TIFF. * Scan at 300 DPI with 100% scaling in black and white. OmniPage help, written by marketing and not tech support, claims other settings work, but the OCR engine is tuned to give best quality at those settings. OmniPage defaults to this -- most other software does not. * The main screen has a text view and an image view. Turn off the image view. Poke around the Alt-V View menu to turn off anything else you don't want. * The main screen is full of toollbars and buttons. Don't worry if JFW cannot read them, you can do everything through the menus or workflows. * Use alt-P to pull up the Process menu. From there choose "Get Page" and from that submenu, you can select whether to open a tiff file or scan a document. You cannot open an image file from the normal File Open dialog box. * Wait around for all the pages to load if you are bringing in an image file or start scanning, if that's how you are bringing a file in to OmniPage. * When the file is loaded (it's sometimes hard to tell when that's done) do alt-P for Process, then choose perform OCR. You'll get a menu of choices which you can enable or disable. You'll have to keep pulling it up each time you toggle any setting. When everything is the way you want it, select start -- this is all from submenus, not dialog boxes. * When OCR begins, a spell checker is also run as a separate thread. You can check spelling, which is pretty accessible or skip the step by closing the spell checker. You can close the spell checker by tabbing to Close because the spell checker steals the focus. This will not abort the OCR. * It can be difficult to know when the OCR is done. I just run it overnight. * When it completes, do Alt-P, for process, choose Export results and go through the menus the same way you did for OCR. You will be toggling settings, pulling up the menu again for each setting change. But it's all accessible with boxes either checked or unchecked. You will need to select Start to actually make anything happen. * Take the time to learn from the Help and trial and error how to use the work flows and batch manager. The dialogs are all accessible in 13, 14, 15 and 16 -- I use this program every day at work and know this for sure. If you set up a batch job properly, it can run overnight on a huge PDF or Tiff, and you can wake up to a new book ready to read. * If your version of OmniPage has no batch jobs or workflows you have the scaled-down trial version that gets sent out free with scanners. It has poor OCR and should be avoided! --Debee For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

(I know some scripts already exist but they are both buggy and dated.) I want to share code snippets with script writers and start some kind of discussion about this project. I joined the jfwscripts Yahoo group, but it seems dead. I tried hanging out on the talking irc channel, but it's just a lot of single young men flirting. These guys are really, and I mean really smart, but talking about code doesn't turn them on. I remember that a good list was run from blindprogramming.com, but that site seems to have vanished. There is also a freelists list, but I haven't seen traffic from it in a while. Ideally, I'd love to voicechat with some people using that nice new TC conference software that makes it so easy to post code while discussing. But a mailing list would work too. Where do people go these days to discuss intermediate and advanced script writing? --Debee For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and JAWS Application Box after typing for alittle while in Outlook
Hello Lynn and List, I'm not sure where to report this bug you mention, but I'm experiencing it constantly and it's not only with the latest update of jaws 10. it's since version 10's first release. As I said, I am having all sorts of problems with JAWS 10.1, something. Focus is one of the problems. However, when I type for a minute or two, I hear a typical Windows sound like a beep and then get a box with an error. It's some sort of JAWS application box. This happens in Outlook 2003. I only went to JAWS 10.13 something because Windows automatically downloaded IE 8. Does anyone out there have any idea what this might mean? I use JAWS 10 from work all of the time with no difficulties. Sorry to the reference to Curtis--I thought I was e-mailing my husband at work. I am having problems with this release of Jaws, which I do not have at work. Ouch. Will talk to you later about it. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Simon Sent: Thursday, June 04, 2009 9:37 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10 will not start at bootup what options are there? - Original Message - From: "Arianna Calesso" To: Sent: Thursday, June 04, 2009 10:11 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10 will not start at bootup I just see have JAWS start automatically at startup. I don't see any combo box. Am I missing something? Arianna - Original Message - From: "Brian Lee" To: Sent: Thursday, June 04, 2009 9:38 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10 will not start at bootup Hello Arianna, Try using the startup wizard from the JAWS help menu. In the second screen of the wizard is a choice to have JAWS start after log-on for the current user. Choose "always" from that combo box. Take care.
