Well, I'm just starting with it, and haven't had training, or time to
read anything, but basically, you hit the ALT key, and you are presented
with a row of buttons that you tab across, These buttons kind of
represent what was on the old dropdown menus. You press the spacebar on
a button, and you get another row of buttons with more options. There
is an add-on that you can buy for $30, that will give you the classic
dropdown menus. So far, with persistence, I have been able to use the
ribbon. Also, there are keyboard commands that you can memorize and use
to pretty much avoid the ribbon.

Hi Vicky,

I'm not sure what you have tried at this point, so please excuse me if any
of my below suggestions have already been given.

Use Insert+F to learn what is going on under the cursor. I think if you
select a portion of text and then you execute this command you will get
different info, but I'm not 100% about this.

Use Insert+F1 You will get different info if you have any text selected or
nothing selected.

Under Tools menu, Options, View tab you can turn on different editing codes
so that you can see them in your document. Let me warn you that this can be
a lot of chatter from JAWS as you are moving through the document.

Does any of this begin to address what you are trying to do?

Annette

Re: [JAWS-Users] Another word question

2009-06-27 Thread Brian Lee

Hi Vicki,

I don't remember your original post so I am not sure which version of Word
you are using. If you are using Word 2003 then you can select all text by
using CTRL+A. After selecting all text, use Alt+CTRL+N to change all text
to the normal style. If you have NVDA on your computer then that keystroke
might not work. If the keystroke doesn't work then after selecting all text
use CTRL+shift+S to bring up the combo box containing the styles. You can
use up or down arrow keys in the list of styles until you find the normal
style choice and then press enter key. You can also use up arrow in the
combo box to the top of the list of styles and use the clear all formatting
to change all the text to the normal style. If you find that up and down
arrow keys don't work right then use Alt+down arrow to force the combo box
to open and use the up and down arrow keys to the normal style choice or the
clear all formats choice.

If you are using Word 2007 then press Alt key followed by H followed by E to
clear all formatting after you have selected all text. You can also press
Alt+CTRL+shift+S or use Alt followed by H followed by F followed by Y to
open the styles pane. The first button in focus should be the clear all
button so press enter key to perform the clear all function. You might need
to use F6 to move to the styles pane to close it after clearing all
formatting. After using F6 to move to the styles pane, use CTRL+spacebar
and then use down arrow to the close choice and press enter key.

Take care.

Take care.

What I have done in situations like this is to select all (CTRL-A. Then go

 to
a specific font and size in the font selection, use the paragraph

I've run into a problem with formatting my friend's manuscript. The
paragraphs are all formatted in various styles, block text, indented,

Annette

[JAWS-Users] Issues with JAWS9,

2009-06-27 Thread Michael W Moran
Hi folks, lately when I have an e-mail open and click on a link,
internet explorer doesn't open it. I find I need to go to IE open it

e-mails, JAWS starts not reading the unread e-mails and won't say the
names of the icons on my desktop folder. I often have to unload and
then restart JAWS. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Another word question

2009-06-27 Thread Brian Lee

Hi Vicki,

Unfortunately, if built-in styles have been used in the document then not
just the font and size attributes will be affected. Left alignment is part
of the normal style. Even if you modify the normal style for the current
document or create a new style, the choices for alignment are still left,
right, centered or justify. In modifying or creating a new style, I can't
find any option for excluding the alignment attribute. A style is made up
of specific attributes such as font type, font name, font size, text
alignment, and other attributes. When you change a style then you are
choosing to change to all the given attributes. However, if you select
everything in the document and then just change the things that you want as
uniform such as font type and font size then you shouldn't lose such things
as indentation or tabs.

Also, the keystroke I gave in the last message of Alt+CTRL+N changes to
normal view not normal style as I thought. It had been a long time since I
used the keystroke and obviously I didn't remember its function correctly.

Again, if you want to leave certain attributes of styles used and change
others then you should not use a uniform style. For example, if you use
CTRL+D to bring up the font list, just choosing the font you want to be
uniform and pressing enter will work. If you want everything at 12 point
then pressing CTRL+shift+P will take focus right to the point sizes where
you can make your choice. Of course, the changes will affect either what
you have selected or what you type after making the changes, but such things
as indentation and tabs shouldn't be affected.

If you would like to discuss this further off list then feel free to write
me at my Email address shown below.

Take care.

Hi Vicki,

I don't remember your original post so I am not sure which version of Word
you are using. If you are using Word 2003 then you can select all text by
using CTRL+A. After selecting all text, use Alt+CTRL+N to change all text
to the normal style. If you have NVDA on your computer then that
keystroke
might not work. If the keystroke doesn't work then after selecting all
text

use CTRL+shift+S to bring up the combo box containing the styles. You can
use up or down arrow keys in the list of styles until you find the normal
style choice and then press enter key. You can also use up arrow in the
combo box to the top of the list of styles and use the clear all
formatting

to change all the text to the normal style. If you find that up and down
arrow keys don't work right then use Alt+down arrow to force the combo box
to open and use the up and down arrow keys to the normal style choice or
the

clear all formats choice.

If you are using Word 2007 then press Alt key followed by H followed by E
to

clear all formatting after you have selected all text. You can also press
Alt+CTRL+shift+S or use Alt followed by H followed by F followed by Y to
open the styles pane. The first button in focus should be the clear all
button so press enter key to perform the clear all function. You might
need

to use F6 to move to the styles pane to close it after clearing all
formatting. After using F6 to move to the styles pane, use CTRL+spacebar
and then use down arrow to the close choice and press enter key.

Take care.

the capitalization indication list gives four choices. The choices are
for indication by character/spell, character and word, character word and
line or none. If you pick the fourth one in the list, (which is for

move line by line in your document. If you want changes to apply in all

when you open a given application's configuration manager.

Open configuration manager using JAWS key 6. Use Alt+S for settings menu.
Text processing is a menu choice in that menu.

The amount of pitch difference between the normal and capitalization
indication can be changed in the global voices dialog box in the JAWS
window. It is set at 20% higher than pitch for the normal voice. If you
increase percentage then the difference in pitch between the PC cursor voice
and the capitalization indication voice increases.

Take care.

When JAWS will not read

I frequently have problems with JAWS not speaking portions of a word or
line, entire lines, and multiple lines when in MS-Word and composing an
e-mail in Outlook. I think it is a video conflict with JAWS and the
computer. Here is what I do when I encounter these problems. I start with
the first item on the below list, and if that does not fix the problem I
move on down the list.

I have a theory that the mouse is some how interfering with the info JAWS is
trying to retrieve to read. So I repeatedly move the mouse in a upward or
downward direction to move it off of the area where I am trying to work. Of
course I haven't an idea where the mouse is moving to, but my goal is to
move it to the top or bottom of the screen. My thought is that there is
less chance that it will interfere with what I am doing.

Use Insert+ESC to refresh the screen.

Select the word, phrase, line, paragraph that you are having trouble reading
Then use Insert+ESC to try refreshing the screen.

Use Alt+Tab to move away from the program and then move back to the program.

Insert+F4 to unload JAWS, and then Control+Alt+J to reload it. Before
doing this, make sure the version of JAWS that you are using has the
Control+Alt+J short cut set up.

Close the document that you are working on and then re-open it.

Exit out of the program and then reload it.

If all of these tricks fail, give up on it for now and come back later,
after a system reboot.

Font size can also effect how JAWS reads. I have found that Arial 12 works
well.

Also check your view. I prefer to use Print Layout in MS-Word in either
Full-page or Page width view.
This is not the recommended view from FS. I do this because at work we deal
with a lot of text formatting and my co-workers find Normal layout to be a
problem.

HTH,
Annette

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10 Upper Case Indication in MS Word

Hello Lisa,

I think that what you are looking for is in the Speech and Sound Manager
under the miscellaneous page tab. The speech and sound manager can be
opened from the settings menu in the configuration manager. Pick the
classic scheme in the list of schemes and tab to the edit button. Press
enter on the button. Move to the miscellaneous page using CTRL+tab key. In
the list you will hear all caps speak text using all caps voice. Use tab
to the radio buttons and the second one should be the checked one. (speak
text with this item using voice). Move back to the list and use down arrow
key. You will hear cap speak text using single cap voice Tab to the
radio buttons. If the top button is checked you will hear cap announced the
way you do now. Use down arrow to the second radio button, (speak text with
this item using voice). Press enter on the OK button a time or two and you
will be told that you haven't saved changes. Answer yes to saving the
change.

Hopefully, this is what you are needing.
