That's aben a problem since jaws 7 if I recall. I wish there were a way

Hi,

you say: I've made sure JAWS is set up to keep forms mode off until I
turn it on
manually ...

How? Have you disabled AutoForms Mode in the Internet Explorer Config
manager? Then try turning it off in the default. For my purposes,
AutoForms Mode is too much of a gimmick, most of the time.

Hi, all.

I have a similar problem as the one reported below.

I've been using JAWS 10 latest update with IE 8 and XP Home for several
weeks and what I've noticed the most is that forms mode will turn on as
a
page is opening without JAWS indicating it is on. This makes IE seem
sluggish because JAWS never reads the contents of the web page.

Checking the status line while the page is loading, I get the same
message
about 1 item left, but the page never begins reading on its own. If I
try
reading line by line I don't get any information except for the
occasional
page title.

The work around I'm currently using for this is to press insert Z to
turn
forms mode off and then press it again to reactivate the virtual cursor.

I here the indication that forms mode is off. Then I press the key
combo
again and hear JAWS say forms mode on, auto, forms mode off.

This seems to correct the problem, but it is frustrating as it does this
on
most of the sites I use several times a day and JAWS seems to
spontaneously
go into forms mode on some sites for no discernable reason whether I'm
in an
edit field or not. The page doesn't appear to be refreshing, so I don't
know what's causing any of this behavior.

I've also had the same thing happen in OE while reading mail in HTML.
If I
click on a link in OE, it's a safe bet that the page will load with
forms
mode already on and I'll need to do the steps above.

I've made sure JAWS is set up to keep forms mode off until I turn it on
manually, and I've made sure that JAWS is set to use the virtual cursor
in
HTML documents.

My inferiority complex is not as good as yours.

I had similar problems getting rid of unwanted Forms Mode in the
beginning, when i updated through the JAWS10 beta cycle to the released
version of JAWS10. What i then did, although there were other reasons
as well, was: uninstall JAWS10 and remove its folders, then reinstall
JAWS10 from the CD. that solved the Forms mode issue, so that forms
Mode on or off has worked correctly - apart from where, In firefox
perhaps, I have to use Forms mode or else subscribing to Live Bookmarks
doesn't (or didn't) work properly for me. There was a change to how
Forms Mode operated during the beta cycle for JAWS10, if you go back
that far. So, if you have the tenacity and patience and think it's
worth it, you could go through with the complete removal of JAWS10 and
then reinstall it, either using the current Web download version or
starting with the CD version. I did all I could to fix mine earlier,
and that did it.

Of course you can convert any sund file to .wav format, which would be the
uncompressed form of any audio file.

Switch is okay, but Goldwave will also convert, as will most pro-level
sound programs, such as CoolEdit or Sonic Forge.

There will inevitably be some loss in this process, but I can't explain
the technical reasons why this is true. I only know that if you have two
identical sound files, both in .wav format, then compress one of them to
mp3 and then decompress it back to wave file, it will sound worse than the
unaltered wave file.

In my studio, I use Goldwave for most simple conversion tasks. I use
Sonic Forge for more complex work, and Cakewalk Pro 9 as my digital audio
recorder/mixer.

Hello Greg,

I'm not sure that you can convert anything to .wav, but if it is at all
possible, you could try using switch, from nch software.

You can download a free version and it works well with jaws, even jaws
10.

The paid version has more functions, but .wav is the raw sound format,
as far as I know and that's why I'm not sure whether you can convert
anything back to that, if already reduced to a lesser quality format.

Riana

Re: [JAWS-Users] A question about converting sound files?

2009-07-31 Thread KimKelly
You can try Gold wave. That is an Accessaable program. and you can also
get scripts for it.

I can't remember where to get the scripts, but, I am sure someone will know.

Also, Gold Wave is a program that has a free trial, but it is worth the
price.

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Vista

2009-07-31 Thread Stewart A Overbey
I'm considering downloading and upgrading to Vista Business from
XP PRO. The Upgrade advisor said I would be able to run this
upgrade. After the purchase, I will also receive a coupon for
windows 7 free.

Question: can I run this upgrade with windows and jaws loaded?
Will I need sighted assistance.

Any ideas are welcome,
Stewart

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do I access the formula palette in excel?

2009-07-31 Thread Brian Lee

Hello Perry,

I am using JAWS 10 and Excel 2007. The methods might be a little different
for earlier versions of Excel and/or JAWS.

To hear the formula spoken use JAWS key with CTRL and function key 2. JAWS
key is the big zero key on the number pad when number lock is off. If using
the laptop configuration then use the caps lock key with CTRL and F2 to hear
the formula spoken. If you hold down the JAWS key with CTRL key and press
F2 twice, the formula will be shown in a dialog box. You can use JAWS key B
to read the box or use the JAWS cursor to read it. Use escape key to
dismiss the dialog.

Another way to read the formula is to move to the cell that contains the
formula and press function key 2 to move into edit mode. Press home key to
move to the beginning of the formula and then use right arrow key if you
want to read it character by character. use escape key to move out of the
edit mode.

If I remember correctly, in earlier versions of Excel and JAWS the command
to hear the formula was just CTRL with function key 2. Holding down CTRL
and pressing function key 2 twice would bring focus to the formula bar where
you could use arrow keys to review the formula.

Take care.

Go to start menu, run. Type control userpasswords2 hit enter.
Tab to the list of log in names. Pick the one you want for log in.
Tab to this log in don't require a password, and check the box. Then
apply, ok and ok your way out.
Now reboot, log in screen gone for good.

Of course you can convert any sund file to .wav format, which would
be the uncompressed form of any audio file.

Switch is okay, but Goldwave will also convert, as will most
pro-level sound programs, such as CoolEdit or Sonic Forge.

There will inevitably be some loss in this process, but I can't
explain the technical reasons why this is true. I only know that
if you have two identical sound files, both in .wav format, then
compress one of them to mp3 and then decompress it back to wave
file, it will sound worse than the unaltered wave file.

In my studio, I use Goldwave for most simple conversion tasks. I
use Sonic Forge for more complex work, and Cakewalk Pro 9 as my
digital audio recorder/mixer.

Regards
Riana

[JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder

2009-07-31 Thread Moderator
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The
purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader
Program.

So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better
with
scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be
requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we
all know
works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or
want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently.

Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates
a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I
am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how
new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence
to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be
there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is
quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than
first.
So try it yourself first what ever it might happen to be. If you get stuck
then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current
dilemma.
Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if
there is a software package that does a specific task and works well with
JAWS

is perfectly fine.

The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of
Freedom
Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I suggest
you take it up with Freedom Scientific directly.

Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Also
any news letters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be
posted

to the list prior to receiving moderator approval.

Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done
for your protection. The message list might state that there is an
attachment

but in fact Mailman does remove them.

When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive
in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply
delete
messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 450
subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here.

Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines,
then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions
that
are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not
receive an answer for a number of reasons.

Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. There you
will
find the group web address along with some other relevant information
pertaining to contacting the management team ETC.

Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you
may receive an email from the Mailman program asking you to reactivate your
account. Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and
follow the directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after
receiving
a number of such messages then we will figure that you no longer wish to be
a member of the list and remove your email address.

The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this is not a high tech
swap shop
or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services
will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is
off
topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does
not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should
only

post in the following manner:

Using the TO: field with only one list address. The SUBJECT: field should be
short and to the point without including any member names.

The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules
to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect do
not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at
the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and

every list. This practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with
unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. Lastly
please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips, or pleas to help
dying

kids, should ever be forwarded to the list.

No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto
responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not
included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed!

My hope
