[JAWS-Users] pacmate and jaws
Hi listers I have just acquired a pacmate omni, and want to set it up as a Braille terminal with jaws. I have added it as a Braille display and made it the default. I have connected it to the computer and it recognises it by saying device connected. I reload jaws but don't get any Braille on the display. I have set up an m-power in the same way and set the m-power as a terminal and have no problem with jaws. I am new to the pacmate so any help would be much appreciated. the wolf For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] clicking on links that say on mouse over with jaws
Hi Susie; Below is an explanation of on mouse over that was posted by a fellow list member awhile back. From: Donald Marang It means that there is an element on the web page labeled, Reply all, that will perform an action when the user hovers the mouse over that element. JAWS does not attempt to evaluate the action the designer assigned to be performed. This is usually just some animation or effects, written in JavaScript, that are useless to us. Other times it will pop up with additional text, like a definition, like a Tool Tip balloon in an application. And to make things confusing for us, sometimes the JavaScript code will go to another page. To have this action performed, JAWS can let you access this information by pressing Control + Insert + Enter. I am not sure how this is different from forcing the mouse (JAWS cursor) over the element by Routing the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor (perhaps it is the virtual cursor at this point?) with Insert + numPad Minus (-). I am glad that JAWS now allows me to know that there is some code here that may provide hidden information. Note that this action is different than what happens when the user clicks on that element, or in our case pressing Enter. On some elements, you might have to try all possible keystrokes to get it to do what you want. Keep in mind web designers like to get creative and put in extra, non-standard stuff. Re: [JAWS-Users] question on avast
Hi Angelina; Follow the steps below; From: Rick Justice ricjust...@jaws-users.com Press enter on Avast in the system tray, and hit enter on the stop on-access protection option. You will get a dialogue warning you, just spacebar the yes button. You need Avast turned off before uninstalling it through the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel. From: Brian Lee Another list member had the same problem with uninstalling Avast. Here is the information that I wrote concerning that situation. The steps below should be done after you have disabled Avast through the context menu for the system tray icon and done the normal uninstall process through the control panel applet for add/remove or programs and features. Hopefully uninstall will have worked for you after disabling Avast from the system tray and uninstalling it with their tool or through the control panel applet. However, if you still have problems then you might want to try the following procedures. Avast has about four services that start with your computer system. You can see if they are still listed in your services and if so then disable them. 1. Press Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box. 2. Type in services.msc without the quotes and press enter key. Wait a few seconds for the list of services to appear. When they are in view then you will be in the tree view of local services. If that doesn't bring up the list of services then you might need to type in CMD and press enter at the run prompt and then when you get a command prompt type in services.msc and press enter key. 3. Use tab key to move into your list of services. 4. use down arrow until you find an Avast service. Services are listed alphabetically. 5. When you find an Avast service then use application key and arrow up to the properties choice and press enter key. 6. Use tab key to the startup type combo box and use down arrow to the disable choice. Tab to an apply button if present or the OK button and press enter key. 7. When back in the list of services use down arrow and perform the same actions on any services that start with the Avast name. You might also want to check the run areas of your registry. If you work in the registry be very careful not to make any other changes as there is no opportunity to save or undo changes you make. 1. Bring up the run dialog box by using Windows key with R. 2. Type in regedit and press enter key. 3. You should be in a tree view of the registry hierarchy. If you are in a list view then use shift tab to move into the tree view. In the hierarchy you open a level by using right arrow key and close a level by using left arrow key. Use left arrow in the tree structure until you hear my computer open. 4. Use down arrow to HKEY_CurrentUser and use right arrow to open the level. 5. Press S or S O until you find the software choice and right arrow to open the level. 6. Press M or M I to move to Microsoft and open the level. 7. Press W or W I until you get to the Windows choice and use right arrow key to open the level. 8. Press C to move to the current version choice and open the level. 9. Press the letters R U until you find the Run choice and then use tab to the list view. 10. Use up or down arrow keys to find any references to Avast and delete them using the delete key and answering confirmation prompts. 11. Use shift+tab back to the tree structure and arrow down to the next choice that starts with run. 12. use tab into the list and check for any Avast entries. Delete them if you find them. 13. Continue to move between the tree and list views using tab and shift+tab keys. Check the list view for any Avast entries for any entries in the tree structure that start with the word run including RunOnce, Run Services, etc. 14. Move back in the tree view using left arrow key until my computer open is found. 15. Use down arrow key to HKEY_Local Machine and open it. 16. Follow the same steps as you did for the current user hive, deleting any references to Avast in the run boxes. Also delete the Alwil software folder in program files, (that is a l w I l). CCleaner also has a uninstall tool that might help. In the CCleaner window use tab to the tools button and press spacebar or enter key. Use tab to the uninstall button and press spacebar. Use tab to the list of programs and down arrow to Avast. Tab to the uninstaller button and press spacebar. Follow prompts. In CCleaner you can also open tools as mentioned above and use the start up button to show a list of startup processes. Tab to the list after using start up button. Each entry is marked as yes or no meaning whether or not they should start with Windows. Use down arrow through the list to find any Avast choices. If you find one then tab to the delete button and use it. Hi all, I just tried insert ctrl enter and all I heard was: the current elements attributes have changed. I tried this keystroke multiple times and the same thing kept happening. from Andrew - Original Message - From: Mike Barbara mb69ma...@charter.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, March 14, 2010 7:19 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] clicking on links that say on mouse over with jaws Hi Susie; I know exactly what you mean. [JAWS-Users] Excel and Merged Cells
Thank you Annette and Brian, This helps. After I insert new rows I will just have to be sure I re-merge the title of the section in the previous columns . If I am correct, what is the best way to do this? For example I add a row at a10 with data in C10. B2 to B9 were merged as a sub title for that section. A1 to A20 are merged as the main title for that sub group. Would I unmerge B2-B9 and re-merge as B2-B10? And do the same for the A section Any easy way to re-merge cells with a new range, if this is what I need to do after inserting a new row into this spreadsheet with merged sections? Thank you, Bill -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf of Brian Lee Sent: Friday, March 12, 2010 6:55 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel and Merged Cells Hello Bill, Sometimes people will merge cells in a column to keep large sections of text Together instead of increasing row height. JAWS will read a merged range of cells the same way it does a single cell and will tell you the range. In your example you might have a lot of information to listen to at once. When you merge information in Excel 2007, you are placing data with the same data value in a range of cells instead of into one. If you have information already in several cells and try to merge them then Excel will let you know that there are cells with different data values trying to be merged and it will keep only the data in the top left cell of the range. Usually merging is done for such things as long strings of text like a title or a company name. You can still use F2 to go into edit mode and read the text like you would in a word processor. Using up and down arrow keys will move from line to line within the merged range, pressing CTRL+home will go to the beginning, etc. When in edit mode in Excel the insert mode is on so you can add words between others, you can select and delete a specific amount of text in the range, and so forth. Your reading, navigating and editing commands should all work for you if you go into edit mode by using function key 2. If you want to add a new line in the cell then you need to use Alt+enter key to force the line break. If you use enter key then you will be brought out of edit mode. If you want to remove the merge and work with single cells then move focus into the merged range of cells and use CTRL+1 to bring up the format dialog. If the page of the dialog that appears is not the alignment page then use CTRL+tab until the alignment page tab is active. Use tab key to move across the controls in the alignment page until you get to a checkbox that determines whether or not merging is to be used. If the merge cells checkbox is checked then use a spacebar to remove the checkmark and tab to the OK button and press enter key. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel and Merged Cells
Hello Bill, In your example, if all the data in columns other than A and B was above row 10 then you wouldn't have to insert a row but could just type the new value in C10. If you do need to insert a row then you can remove the merge from the cells that are merged. You will need to remove the merge from B1 thru B9 before merging again. If you just try to extend the merge without removing the merge from an existing range I don't think Excel lets you do that action. In the case of the data in your B column you can just move into the merged range, press CTRL+1 followed by Alt+M and enter key to remove the merge. After doing that select b1 thru b10 by using CTRL+G and typing in b1:b10 and pressing enter key. You can then use CTRL+1 followed by Alt+M and enter key to perform the merge. If you want to extend the A column after doing the B column then select the range and then press F4. The F4 will repeat the action you did before selecting the range for the A column, which was the merge action. Take care.
