[JAWS-Users] Help with Hotmail

2010-08-03 Thread chris hallsworth

Hello: During this past week, my Hotmail account was changed to the newest
version that has been releasing over the past couple of months. Before this
change, I could use Hotmail effectively and all of the functions worked.
Now, however, I am unable to send messages, reply to messages, or access
my contact list. I have done some research and have been reading that I can
use Windows Live Mail as my mail client and Hotmail will work OK. I do not
wish to use a program that
is resident on my computer as I often use other machines -- that's why I
use web mail.

My daughter and I also share a business account, (for our farm), and
she is

able to perform all functions including sending, replying and viewing/using
the contact list.

I am running Windows XP with all appropriate updates, JAWS Version
10, IE7

on a cable connection. I can type into the edit boxes for the address field
and subject field, but no edit box appears for the message field. Also, when
I hit the send button, nothing seems to happen; I have searched for any
error messages and find none.

Any help would be apreciated, Microsoft is, thus far, unresponsive, and I
really have need of both Email addresses.

If you have ideas, please send them to mainefu...@gmail.com
Thank you.

Hi all,
I am trialling Steve's Talking Clock and I think I'm going to buy it.
Love the voice and sounds that come with the program, plus the voices
are customizable. You can try it free for 15 days from
http://clock.steve-audio.net.

Enjoy!

From the Start Menu, select Talking Desktop Clock Options under

the

Talking Desktop Clock menu. Then select Speech from the TDC

Make sure the appropriate time interval check boxes are checked.

Be sure

to select "Use Microsoft Speech as your default speech option.

If you

You have to use the up and down arrow keys and the numpad 5 key

Or, why pay for or install any clock period when all one
needs to do is hit JAWS key and F 12 key? Of course there
are bells and whistles to go along with the others so I
guess it just depends on personal preference

[JAWS-Users] Preview of JAWS 12

2010-08-03 Thread Gerald Levy

Here's a brief preview of JAWS 12 I just came across:

by Curtis Chong

In early July, I attended a three-hour session conducted by Freedom Scientific
during which the company provided a sneak preview of JAWS for Windows Version
12. Freedom Scientific has been working on this newest release of JAWS for more
than a year, and it is hoped that JAWS 12 will be released before the end
of 2010.

Long-time JAWS users will be interested to know that in JAWS 12, Freedom
Scientific proposes to replace the familiar JAWS Configuration Manager with
something
called the Settings Center. In the Settings Center, you can search for the
setting that you want to change and then simply make the change. It is no longer
necessary to explore a variety of menus to track down where, for example, you
can change the level of punctuation that JAWS speaks or increase the speaking
rate of JAWS. Also, in the Settings Center, your last 25 changes will be
displayed at the bottom of the tree view, making it easier for you to fix a
setting
that might have been adjusted incorrectly or adjust settings that you change
frequently.

Another feature included in JAWS 12 is the ability to operate your computer
from the Braille keyboard of any connected refreshable Braille display. Using
the Braille keys, you can enter any character that would be entered through a
standard QWERTY keyboard, and this includes all JAWS commands as well.

Also, a proficient Grade II Braille user will be able to enter text in
contracted Braille and have the result reverse-translated on the fly. I do not
see
much value in this feature for me, personally, but I hesitate to criticize the
investment in time and effort that has been made by Freedom Scientific;
I simply do not know how many Braille users out there have been longing to
operate their computer from a Braille keyboard.

The final noteworthy feature in JAWS 12 is the ability to use a Virtual Ribbon
in Microsoft Office. Some blind computer users have expressed frustration
with the ribbon that has been incorporated into Microsoft Office 2007 and now
into Office 2010. What Freedom Scientific is proposing for JAWS 12 is to
give the Office user the choice of whether to use the ribbon as is or to use
the Virtual Ribbon provided by JAWS. This Virtual Ribbon provides a user
experience
that feels more like the traditional menus with which a lot of people are
familiar. Time will tell whether this feature is worth the investment. As for
me, since I feel quite comfortable with the Office ribbon as it is, I will
probably choose not to use the JAWS Virtual Ribbon that comes with JAWS 12.

In all, JAWS 12 seems like a bit of an improvement over JAWS 11. Certainly,
Freedom Scientific has incorporated some new features which some people will
like. As for me, I would wish for features in JAWS which make it easier for
blind people to compete in the workplace-something which Freedom Scientific
seems to have lost sight of over the years.

Re: [JAWS-Users] INTERNET EXPLORER 8 PROBLEMS

2010-08-03 Thread Ishe Chinyoka

Hi,

it could be that the code used is not recognised by IE: just one problem
with client scripting. Most of it may be proprietary or not yet recognised
by another browser. Did you try the same code with PHP for server-side
scripting?

(Just my opinion)

Hope this sheds a bit of light.

Ishe

We all have the right to be wrong in our opinions but not in our facts.

[JAWS-Users] Say All Voice

2010-08-03 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Hi List,

I had to do a complete system restore and now that I've reinstalled jaws, I
can't remember how to change the say all voice from that awful Microsoft
voice to one of the realspeak ones. Please help this old brain!

Sounds good. The setting center sounds like a feature I could benifit from.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Preview of JAWS 12

Here's a brief preview of JAWS 12 I just came across:

by Curtis Chong

In early July, I attended a three-hour session conducted by Freedom
Scientific during which the company provided a sneak preview of JAWS for
Windows Version
12. Freedom Scientific has been working on this newest release of JAWS for
more than a year, and it is hoped that JAWS 12 will be released before the
end
of 2010.

Long-time JAWS users will be interested to know that in JAWS 12, Freedom
Scientific proposes to replace the familiar JAWS Configuration Manager with
something
called the Settings Center. In the Settings Center, you can search for the
setting that you want to change and then simply make the change. It is no
longer
necessary to explore a variety of menus to track down where, for example,
you can change the level of punctuation that JAWS speaks or increase the
speaking
rate of JAWS.

Using
the Braille keys, you can enter any character that would be entered through
a standard QWERTY keyboard, and this includes all JAWS commands as well.

Also, a proficient Grade II Braille user will be able to enter text in
contracted Braille and have the result reverse-translated on the fly. I do
not see
much value in this feature for me, personally, but I hesitate to criticize
the investment in time and effort that has been made by Freedom Scientific;
I simply do not know how many Braille users out there have been longing to
operate their computer from a Braille keyboard.

The final noteworthy feature in JAWS 12 is the ability to use a Virtual
Ribbon in Microsoft Office. Some blind computer users have expressed
frustration
with the ribbon that has been incorporated into Microsoft Office 2007 and
now into Office 2010.
As
for
me, since I feel quite comfortable with the Office ribbon as it is, I will
probably choose not to use the JAWS Virtual Ribbon that comes with JAWS 12.

Or, why pay for or install any clock period when all one
needs to do is hit JAWS key and F 12 key? Of course there
are bells and whistles to go along with the others so I
guess it just depends on personal preference

From the Start Menu, select Talking Desktop Clock

Options under

the

Talking Desktop Clock menu. Then select Speech from

the TDC

View menu.

Make sure the appropriate time interval check boxes

are checked.

Be sure

to select "Use Microsoft Speech as your default speech

If you

don't have SAPI 5 voices on your system, the default

voice will

be

You have to use the up and down arrow keys and the

[JAWS-Users] Virtual ribbon for Office 07 and 10 RE: Preview of JAWS 12

2010-08-03 Thread Dujari, Prateek
Hmm. I find this virtual ribbon stuff quite intriguing. I am one of those who
doesn't want to learn or even deal with the new ribbon since Office 07 unless
it is my only option. And the blurb below seems to suggest the virtual ribbon
provides a menu like in office 03. If it is really like that I will be
thrilled. However I'm staying grounded until I actually get to try it out once
J12 is released.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Preview of JAWS 12

Here's a brief preview of JAWS 12 I just came across:

by Curtis Chong

I do not
see
much value in this feature for me, personally, but I hesitate to criticize the
investment in time and effort that has been made by Freedom Scientific;

Yes, I must admit I'm curious about the virtual ribbon also, though I've
learned to use the current ribbon.

Gerald, I couldn't agree more.
The acronym JAWS "Job Access With Speech" was the Original
Henter Joyce mission statement in a nut-shell.
Jaws as we know it seems to be falling further-and-further
behind the power curve with respect to the corporate and
educational user.
On a personal note I probably use less than 50% of the
features included in Jaws simply because they don't pertain
to my core needs and activities.

Not wishing to incur the wrath of David or the unemployed
maybe we can continue this discussion off list.

2010-08-03 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
When we first started using OFFICE 2007 here at work, I came in on a
Monday, and found that it had been pushed onto our Pc's over the
weekend, no heads up, no training, nada! I felt overwhelmed, and
purchased an Add on that offered a way around the ribbons, but as time
went on, my natural curiosity took over, and I began exploring the
ribbons, and found that they were not the monster I thought they were.
I do not believe that providing an alternative interface is necessary,
and, in fact, could be harmful, because it again steps away from the
idea of the user mastering Windows concepts, and leads to a dependence
on one screen reading product. I believe that Access Technology
Institute offers a free tutorial on the OFFICE 2007 ribbons at:

[JAWS-Users] Talking Desktop Clock

Hello all,
After all of that recommendation to use Steve's Talking Clock under
Windows 7, I found I had a problem with it once I turned the User
Account Control back on. I will report this to the company. For now, I
am trying the Talking Desktop Clock from the Programs page of
www.jaws-users.com. It's working well for me and even works with the User

[JAWS-Users] Downloading 32 bit programs onto a 64 bit system

2010-08-03 Thread Mike & Barbara Arcadia
Hi All;

I know this question has been asked in the past but, I lost my notes and I'm

download and run 32 bit programs? If so, where are the 32 bit programs
saved versus the 64 bit programs? All advice/help will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.

Hi Mike,
Yes, you can install most 32 bit programs onto a 64 bit operating
system. Those 32 bit programs are stored in a folder called c:\program

Hope this helps.

2010-08-03 Thread Lennie

Hi Mike,

As Chris indicated to you, that is true as long as the 32 bits
program does not use a 16 bits installer.

I use a CD catalog program on my XP computer which was installed with
a 16 bits installer. However, I could not install it on my windows7
computer. The developer provided me with instructions to be able to
use it on the windows7 computer. I had to copy various programs from
the XP computer and register the programs in the registry of the
windows7 computer to work.

Amazingly, it works, but I would have preferred to have the program
with a 32 bits installer instead of jerring rig my windows7 computer.

Thought that you might like to know. Take care,

Lennie

appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.
Mike

Take care,

Lennie

[JAWS-Users] open office .org

2010-08-03 Thread Lenny McHugh
I just uninstalled it. I have no idea how it got on my desktop. It was not
there until I installed Microsoft office 2003 and allowed about 22 updates.
Anyway I looked at the package and could only read it with the jaws cursor. Is
there any value of keeping it? I think I can get it back if I really need it.

[JAWS-Users] windows live contacts

2010-08-03 Thread Lenny McHugh
This is getting quite frustrating. There are two contacts list in windows live
mail and they are not the same. When creating a new message alt-t and down to
select name. When I go through the list there is a jaws-users-list @--- now ifI
go into actions and the contact list that address does not exist. In the
contact list is jaws-us...@--- Also some that I deleted still are available in
the select list. In the select contacts there are also some previous groups
such as family that does not work. These groups do not exist when editing the
contact list.

If you were asked to update Java lately, they sneak in a question to install
Open Office. You need to look vlosely when updating Java, there is a
checkbox that must be unchecked to avoid Open Office being installed.
