[JAWS-Users] New Use For Confenient OCR
I use a rather expensive program for my Bible study called Logos Platinum 4 which also includes a cacophony of resources I have added since I began building my electronic library in 2001. I usually use Jaws about 75% and Magic about 25% of the time when I'm on the computer since I suffered a major vision loss in March. I already used both but after March I began to depend much more on Jaws. Libronix, makers of Logos made the transition to cloud when they moved from version 3 to version 4 a year or so ago. This has several advantages for people like me who have over 2,000 resources and are licensed to access them on several computers. I can have instant access to my place on either laptop at any time, any where. However, with version 4 i could barely access Logos without vision. They are working on making it accessible but we all know that there are many obstacles with graphical heavy applications. today I installed the beta of jaws 13 and tried Logos 4 and it read the entire 3 column screen which has been for the most part inaccessible since March. I figure with FS working on improving Jaws, Logos working on improving accessibility I can't lose. I use this program every single day of my life and have thousands tied up in it. I love convenient OCR already. blind5sparrow - No virus found in this message. [JAWS-Users] word list with jaws 12
Hi all, On some, not all, web pages jaws goes silent after using insert control W to get word list. In fact, the freedom scientific site is one place it happens. If you can get speech back with another screen reader there appears to be some error message. Itt has to be related to the word list function and is not happening in earlier versions, but also happens with the jaws 13 beta. Anybody else getting this? I sometimes use my Kurzweil 1000 on an untagged and textual pdf (where there is no problem with JAWS) in order to find out more accurate information on layout of a page, (this being a newspaper. Some of the text is not where it should be on the page. K1000 does a better job than the free Adobe Reader, even if it's a little slower to get going.) [JAWS-Users] Selecting files in Filezilla
Hi all, I'm using Filezilla for the first time and have encountered an odd problem. I've gotten connected no problem and managed to download a batch of files from the site I'm working with. When it's time to upload files, however, I run into an issue. I select files to upload, either individually or in batches, I right-click using the Jaws cursor, and am told that "upload" isn't available. No option seems to be available, in fact, other than to create a folder in my local directory. It's almost as if the files aren't selecting properly. I've tried hitting space bar on them, selecting them using shift+ arrow-keys, and nothing seems to work. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. This includes alternative ways of uploading files using this program, if such exist. Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF Files
At work I have Adobe Professional and also OPenBook 9. I have found that the OCR feature in Adobe Professional does a pretty good job on many of those "Empty" PDF documents. When I am not successful in Adobe Professional, then I use the OpenBook Freedom printer and send the file to OpenBook. I do not have to deal much with locked PDF files from publishers or PDF's that rely heavily on tables. So, I do not know how much use you will get from this information. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 13 and Live Mail 15
I frequently have this problem with my inbox in Outlook 2007 and 2010 when using JAWS 11 and 12. I have never been able to figure out what causes it nor what makes it disappear. I've contacted Freedom and got the standard response of "it is not a JAWS problem, but rather your computer or Outlook." I've not noticed the problem in my Outlook contacts, but I have seen it in other Outlook mail folders. I also frequently have problems in Outlook mail folders where JAWS will read the name of the e-mail sender and the size of the message, but nothing else such as subject and date/time. The information is there on the screen, but JAWS will not read it. It is an intermittent problem. Daily Tip: Manage Your Bookmarks It may seem like common sense to bookmark a Web page that you visit regularly. But what about organizing your bookmarks? Organizing your bookmarks can help you save time and potential frustration over lost links. Not sure where to start? In Internet Explorer, click the down arrow next to the Add To Favorites icon and select Organize Favorites. Click the New Folder button at the bottom left of the pop-up box. You can create as many folders as you want. Here are some folder name suggestions to help you get organized: Business (online banking, stocks, etc.), Entertainment (your favorite fun sites), Travel (your travel wish list or plans), Miscellaneous (weather, news, etc.) You can also create subfolders in any of your original folders; simply click the folder in which you want to add a subfolder and click New Folder. Daily Term: landscape image Refers to an image that is framed horizontally so the scene spreads out from side to side. A portrait image differs in that the image is framed vertically so the scene spreads out up and down. David Ferrin I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I'll probably screw that one up too. [JAWS-Users] PDF Files
Good Morning, I am at my wit's end with PDF files, so I thought I'd inquire for help here. If there's a better forum for this, or we should be discussing it off list, I'd be happy to do that. I've used JAWS to read basic PDF files, ones with practically no formatting. For instance, a novel in PDF format tends to read pretty well. But I purchase a lot of PDF documents from www.drivethrurpg.com, and most of them aren't read very well by JAWS. I've seen many of the following errors. No spaces between words On two-column pages, the columns being smashed together and read as one nonsensical block of text With tables, the left hand column being presented first, and then the right hand column, not side by side, but all the left hand column entries first, and then the right. Because of all of these difficulties, I've concluded that I may need new strategies for dealing with PDF files. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? What are the optimal settings to use when opening a PDF file? Is there anything I can do to improve the conversion of PDF documents to text? I seem to recall that there's a place that we can Email PDF documents to, and it'll convert them. Is it any good? The problem with that approach is most of these documents are larger than 10 MB, which I believe exceeds the largest Email attachment I can send. I welcome all suggestions and insights. Failing that, I will contact the publishers and ask if I can get copies of the documents I've purchased in an alternate electronic format. It's just very frustrating to know that the information is there and available, but still inaccessible to me. Before I contact the publishers, though, I want to make certain that I'm not doing anything wrong. Many thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] when you have two versions of jaws on your computer, how do you keep one from starting first?
I was having a problem with this since I have Jaws 11 and installed Jaws 13. I can tell which one is on by the speed of the speech since I have speeded up Jaws 11 quite a bit. Anyway whenever I went to the Jaws 13 shortcut on my desktop all it showed me was the Options tree for Jaws 11. So the help shown was also the one for Jaws 11. I tried going to the All programs list and went to Jaws 13 and then the Jaws choice and got the same thing. To solve the problem I added a k in front of the name Jaws 13 on the desktop. Then I can go to it with the keystroke k. At that point I used Insert F4 to quit Jaws 11 and pressed enter on the jaws 13 icon on the desktop. Jaws 13 opened and I had to choose to use it in demo mode. Then I could change settings for Jaws 13. Since I have to use the demo mode I choose to have my Jaws 11 at startup and to open Jaws 13 when I want to try it on special things. When my 40 minutes run out I can quit Jaws 13 and then use my hot keys Alt control J to open Jaws 11 again. So I assume that if you are actively running a former version of Jaws then you can't start or access Jaws 13 until you exit the earlier version. But I could be wrong but this works for me. Just for the record I am running Jaws 11 on a 64 bit Windows 7 laptop.
