[JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader Program. So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better with scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we all know works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently. Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It creates a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than first. So try it yourself first what ever it might happen to be. If you get stuck then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there is a software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is perfectly fine. The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of Freedom Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I suggest you take it up with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Also any news letters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to the list prior to receiving moderator approval. Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done for your protection. The message list might state that there is an attachment but in fact Mailman does remove them. When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply delete messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 450 subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here. Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines, then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions that are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not receive an answer for a number of reasons. Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. There you will find the group web address along with some other relevant information pertaining to contacting the management team ETC. Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you may receive an email from the Mailman program asking you to reactivate your account. Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a number of such messages then we will figure that you no longer wish to be a member of the list and remove your email address. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is off topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the following manner: Using the TO: field with only one list address. The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any member names. The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips, or pleas to help dying kids, should ever be forwarded to the list. No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed! My hope is that this

[JAWS-Users] auto sized 1.71
Well it might work on windows 7 32 bit systems but not on this 64 bit at least not automatically. Oh yes if I set a hotkey to maximize a window that comes up in a restored manner it will do it but not without my manually hitting a key. So for now I will stick with my auto maximize script. If time and opportunity permits I might do an audio recording of setting up that script. Re: [JAWS-Users] The Virtual Ribbon Menu Feature - New in JAWS 12
thank you, Mike, this is very helpful. Russ -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike Barbara Sent: Monday, October 31, 2011 6:49 PM To: Jaws-Users List Subject: [JAWS-Users] The Virtual Ribbon Menu Feature - New in JAWS 12 The Virtual Ribbon Menu Feature - New in JAWS 12 Introduction The ribbon is a new style of menu available in many new applications being released today. Ribbons first appeared in Office 2007 programs, but are now becoming more common in other applications tailored for the WindowsR 7 operating system. Ribbons create an accessibility challenge due to inconsistent navigation between various groups and items. For example, the lower ribbon contains groups of icons, sometimes arranged in several rows. When you press the ARROW keys to move between items in a group, you can skip items if there is a row above or below the one you are on. When pressing the ARROW keys or TAB, no indication is given when focus leaves one group and enters another. You cannot use first letter navigation in the ribbons, because pressing keys might activate ribbon key tips. Finally, because of a group's layout, you do not know if you should navigate up, down, left, or right to select an item. The new virtual ribbon menu feature in JAWSR screen reading software provides predictable navigation, lets you see everything in the ribbon, and offers consistency when navigating with the ARROW keys. For example, each group on the lower ribbon is treated as a submenu. Once you open the group submenu, you can press DOWN ARROW to move through all of the items within that group. When you reach the bottom of the items in that group, focus wraps back to the top item, and vice versa. You can also use first letter navigation in the virtual ribbon menu. Here are a few keystrokes to help you get started using the virtual ribbon menu: . Move from one ribbon tab to another, ALT to move to the first tab, then LEFT or RIGHT ARROW. JAWS reads the name of the tab as you move to it. . Move from an upper ribbon tab to the lower ribbon groups, DOWN ARROW or ENTER. JAWS announces and treats the lower ribbon groups as if they were submenus. . Open a ribbon group submenu, RIGHT ARROW or ENTER. . Navigate the items within each submenu, UP or DOWN ARROW, or first letter navigation. . Close a submenu, LEFT ARROW or ESC. . Move from the lower ribbon back to the upper ribbon, ESC. NOTE: One nice feature of the JAWS virtual ribbon menu is that when you activate an item and focus returns to the document or application you are working on, JAWS remembers where you just were on the ribbon. If you press ALT again, instead of having to go back to the upper ribbon and find your place again, JAWS goes right back to where it was previously, in the same group, and on the exact same control you were last on. I'll demonstrate all of these things to you, and you can practice along with me in just a few minutes. Also, just a reminder, whenever you want to pause the audio of this DAISY book, just press CTRL+P. When you are ready to resume, press CTRL+P again. Remember, you can leave the DAISY book in the background and use this keystroke to play or pause the audio while working on your practice documents in the foreground. When FSReader DAISY player is open, even in the background, use this keystroke to toggle the audio on and off. If you need to print something while FSReader is open, just go to the File menu and choose Print. Using the JAWS Virtual Ribbon Menu as Opposed to the Microsoft Ribbon - Some Differences The virtual ribbon menus feature allows for ribbon navigation using standard menu type commands such as scrolling with the arrow keys and first letter navigation. While virtual ribbon menus are enabled with JAWS, the built-in key tips and accelerator keys that appear visually on the ribbon and on the buttons are disabled. For example, to insert a bookmark in MicrosoftR Word, here are the steps for both scenarios, one using the ribbon, and the second one using JAWS virtual ribbon menus: Using Microsoft Word Key Tips: . Using the built-in keyboard access in Microsoft Word, you would first press ALT+N to move to the Insert tab of the ribbon. . Next, you press the letter K, the Microsoft key tip to activate the bookmark button. Using JAWS Virtual Ribbon Menus: . In order to activate the button using the virtual ribbon menus you first press ALT+N to move to the Insert tab of the ribbon. . Next, you would press DOWN ARROW or ENTER to go to the lower ribbon. . Once on the lower ribbon, you would press L to move to the Links submenu, using first letter navigation. The submenu opens, and focus is on the Hyperlink button. . Finally, you press B for Bookmark. The nice thing about this is that these keystrokes are easy to remember, because it is first letter

Hi; Several years ago I got an extensive tutorial from Iowa Department for the Blind. It included some Jaws scripts and several lessons. Hi Rick. The box to automatically download message when viewing in the preview pane is unchecked. Is that what you are talking about? Also, Mike, unloading JAWS makes no difference, but closing down OE and reopening will correct the problem. The one time I called FS about this problem, I changed identity, downloaded the email and, wouldn't you know, it worked perfectly. Just like taking a car to the garage. Thanks for your thoughts. I have the jaws13 final release. The problem I am having is with links and buttons. It seems to be a big problem too. What is happening is I'm having to press enter on links and buttons twice, and sometimes when I click a link it disappears altogether. I did not notice this behavior in the data cycle. I hope if this is a bug that it fixed very very soon as I'm disappointed that this would slide through a final release. [JAWS-Users] Win 7 question
Hi all, Just started working with a Win 7 ASUS laptop, 64-bit, Jaws 12. I wanted to clean it up some like take the junk off. I wanted to remove Trent Micro Internet Security and Windows Defender as I am going to put Microsoft Security Essentials on the machine. Trent Micro is in the Remove programs list but the machine will not remove it. Windows Defender is not in the remove programs list and I can't find a uninstall.exe file. . Can anyone tell me how to get rid of these two programs? Another question, do I need Windows Live Essentials?
