Miriam,
Here are step by step instructions for using the FS Reader, Version 2 which
should have installed in your system if you loaded Jaws 12 or 13.

1. Go to your Desktop.
2. Press the letter F to use First Letter Navigation and locate a link
called FS READER 2.0
3. Press Enter to open the FS Reader program.
4. You will now be on a blank menu because nothing has yet been called up.
5. Press Control O to open Fs Reader's search module.
6. Shift Tab and your cursor should be on a list of built in training
files.
7. Choose one of the files by lining up on it and pressing Enter.
8. You will now be able to read that the file has been prepared for
reading. The name will be highlighted on your screen.
9. To start Fs Reader, press control P for Play or Pause.
10. To pause the reading, press Control P, again.

Miriam, this will get you started. There are many other controls you can
use to advance through the file, speed up or slow down the reading and so
on.
In answer to your earlier question, the files read by the Fs Reader in this
manner are recordings of an actual voice.
If you have loaded all of the training files when you installed Jaws,
everything you need should be there in one of those files.
I hope this helps.

The easiest way for me to learn is to read simple directions on how to do
something and take notes. And then, if I do an operation often enough, I
memorize it. Otherwise, I look back at my notes. So I'm wondering where, on
the FS website, I can find something to download or copy which describes

does it make it easy to read the material? Aren't there word documents that
provide the same information? Hearing the material in a podcast doesn't seem

appreciate any suggestions.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do i backup my system on an externalharddriveusing jaws?

2012-02-02 Thread Gerald Levy

It sounds like you want to perform an image backup of your entire system so
that you can restore everything to the way it was in the event your local
drive fails. If this is the case, your options are very limited. Although
you can use an imaging program to back up your system without sighted help,
you will need tech savvy sighted help to perform the system recovery if your
local drive fails. This is because the recovery phase requires the use of a
special boot CD which is not JAWS accessible because there is no speech
available during this procedure. I personally back up my system every two
weeks using Macrium Reflect which is free and may work with JAWS 8, although
it does require using the JAWS cursor. If I ever had to restore my system
from this back up, I would need tech-savvy sighted help. On the JAWS Users
audio page is a three part tutorial explaining how to use a paid imaging
program called Image for Windows to back up and restore your system without
sighted help. The problem with this approach is that it requires storing
the backup image on a series of DVD's instead of an external hard drive,
which could be unreliable or cumbersome. And it requires performing the
recovery without speech by following a series of steps very carefully, so if
you screw up, you could have a real mess on your hands. If anyone else on
this list is aware of an imaging program that works with JAWS during both
the backup and recovery procedures and allows you to store the backup image
on an external hard drive rather than DVD's , I would sure like to know
about it.

Although the training material on the installation may have updates

Thank you. There seems to be a problem with this, howweer. I have it,
but no shortcut to it on the desktop. I have the introduction to how
to use it, which I just listened to. However, when I tried to download
some of the training modules from the website, they wouldn't download.
No reason given, just, unable to download.

Miriam,
Here are step by step instructions for using the FS Reader, Version 2
which should have installed in your system if you loaded Jaws 12 or 13.

1. Go to your Desktop.
2. Press the letter F to use First Letter Navigation and locate a
link called FS READER 2.0
3. Press Enter to open the FS Reader program.
4. You will now be on a blank menu because nothing has yet been
called up.

There are many other controls you
can use to advance through the file, speed up or slow down the reading
and so on.
In answer to your earlier question, the files read by the Fs Reader in
this manner are recordings of an actual voice.
If you have loaded all of the training files when you installed Jaws,
everything you need should be there in one of those files.
I hope this helps.

Using JAWS

The way I do it, it is as simple as copying files and folders.
I use Windows Explorer to highlight the folders and files I want to copy.
You could just highlight the, My Documents folder.
Alt C, to copy
Then open the external drive and paste the files there, Alt V.
Then sit back and wait while the system does the copying.
Blessings,
Tom

I just found out that that keyboard command works for Office Excel 2007
also. Thanks for the tip. Jerry

I don't know if this works for later versions of Excel past 2003, but if
you
needed just the current date, you can press: control-;, in a cell and the
 current date is given.

 Daily Tip:
Excel: Add Months To A Date

To add months to a date in Microsoft Excel 2010, enter a date in a cell
 (A1,
for example). In another cell, type =EDATE(A1,[number of months you want
 to
add]). Press ENTER to complete the formula. You can also do this without
first entering a date in a cell. Simply choose a cell and type =EDATE([a
date] ,[number of months you want to add]).

  Daily Term:
 stemming

Some search engines automatically stem keywords you use to search. For
example, if you type heads, the engine actually only looks for head,
ostensibly to find more matches. This is an uncommon practice and can
sometimes be avoided by putting quotation marks around the keyword.

Hi David,

 Hi Tom,
Did you mean, control, instead of alt?

 Blessings,
 Tom

[JAWS-Users] a hope problem.

2012-02-02 Thread jim rawls
Hi all,

I installed the latest update to hope, and finally got it to work. However,
when I want to go to another station, from the one I am currently listening
too, I have to hit the close button on the current one, and then select
another one. Didn't we used to be able to just arrow downs to a new station
from the one you were currently listening too? How do you folks who have
hope, change stations when you want too?

Jim

[JAWS-Users] help

2012-02-02 Thread Mick Du Buisson
Hi there, I think that I've been sending my pleas to the wrong
emailing address. I've got jaws12 and windows 7 on my Comp, but can't seem
to get the jaws voice to come back on when finishing another program,
pressing ctrl+alt+j anymore, just wondering if anyone can enlighten me as I
can't remember how to retrieve it. Thanks...

Jim,

Press alt-s to save. Then you can press control-j to look at the download.

Or, if you would rather, instead of pressing enter on the link to download
it, use the applications key to get to save-target-as and press enter. The
dialog there looks a whole lot like i.e.8.
