[JAWS-Users] Jaws announcing imbedded object

2013-02-24 Thread Ryan West
Hello all,

Since I updated my jaws to 14 jaws is alerting me to imbedded objects. I have
an online book and almost every other line there is an imbedded object, so you
can see how it announcing it all the time would get on my nerves. Please help
me figure out how to turn off the announcing of imbedded objects.

Sincerely, Ryan West

This is the first I have heard of anybody finding a status line in WLM, very
interesting thank you.

Personally I have not looked at the program for over a year at least.

David: on my Win7 Toshiba if if in Windows Live Mail, I press
JAWSkey+PageDown, the read status line, I get the usual status line
information, number of unread messages in the folder I'm in, etc. It could
be the vews people are using that enable or disable this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jumbled forms

2013-02-24 Thread justin williams
You may want to go from field to field with f. this would mean that
everytime you entered info, you would hit escape to exit forms mode. Also,
you could use the arrow keys to go from field to field without forms mode
on. Go to the top, and see where the edit box is in relationship to the
first label. You can keep trak of the form a little better that way.

I am trying to fill in a payment form on a website and jaws is getting all
jumbled up. This happened with jaws 12 but I assumed that 14 would be
better. As I tab from one edit box to another either using E, F, or just
tabbing, the labels are getting all mixed up and it is taking me round in
circles rather than down the form one by one. It is also repeating boxes
that I have already filled in rather than telling me which box exactly I am
in. Does anybody else have this problem? Would using a different browser
help? I am using the latest version of internet explorer. Any help

Re: [JAWS-Users] Bullets for Word

2013-02-24 Thread Annette Carr
Kevin,

I do not see your earlier message, but even if it was in my Inbox, I would
not have seen it until now. I'm not able to sit by my computer all day and
night waiting to respond to messages when they come in.

There are many ways of accomplishing turning on Bullets in Word 2010. Try
this:

Position your cursor at the beginning of the line where you want to insert
your first bullet.
Tap the Alt key to activate the ribbon.
Press H to open the Home menu.
Press U to open the Bullet drop down.
Right arrow once to select a solid round bullet. Use your arrow keys to
move around to the other options available. You will have to experiment
with this as I do not know what else is there.
Press Enter when you find the type of bullet you want.
Begin typing your text.
Pressing Enter will drop you down to the next line and add a new bullet.
When you are done press Enter twice to turn off bullets. You can also use
Alt, then H, then U to open the Bullet menu again and select None.

I hope you find this helpful, as well as find some patients in the future.

Annette

Actually it is called windows mail which was introduced in Vista and then

Actually it is called windows mail which was introduced in Vista and then
promptly abandon. Yes it is almost the same as outlook express and it can be
enabled in windows 7 the fact is to do it requires adding a few keys to your
registry and replacing a DLL file or so. I have done it and the files ETC
are still on my server I must point out a something. You must have service
pack 1 installed prior to enabling windows mail to play it safe. To be

Use Shift control l. It will automatically put them at the beginning of

your shift down arrow, and when you have finished selecting what you want,
then hit shift control l.

Feel free to leave if you wish. There are over 600 people on here and it is
a Sunday afternoon so it is reasonable to think that not everybody is home
waiting to answer there email.

Help more often than not arrives for everybody assuming that somebody out

So let's all be civilized on here.

is another matter, but they aren't operating system specific so far as I am
aware, it's the program itself that has problems like no status line the
last I heard.

David, so, if I upgrade to win 7, I can use windows live mail without
issues? Or should I just go to win 8, use windows live mail and move on
with my life? I'm beginning to think that I need a masters in computer
science to send e mails to my friends! It is ridiculous to confront choices
like this without enough information. And I've been on line with jaws since
miy first computer which was windows 95. It just keeps getting worse and
worse. Marilyn

hope the list moderator is noting your failure to change the subject line to

Hi Steve,

I haven't run into those problems.

Do you have an example of an update that failed to update?

Not to be difficult, but I'm curious why I didn't receive such a problem
with my updates.

compatible with JAWS and works with all versions of Windows.

7. Outlook Express: still a favorite with XP users because of its
simplicity and ease of use, but does not work with higher versions of
Windows.

Okay, have I cleared up the confusion or merely made it worse? Have I
missed anything?

Yes, Windows 8 is useable via keyboard. Retail stores are pushing Win 8,
but Windows 7 boxes are available on-line or probably upon request at other
retailers.

Windows 8 is not as easy to use in my opinion as Windows 7, and there are
still quite a few programs that don't work with Win 8 yet.

[JAWS-Users] E-Mail Clients With Jaws

2013-02-24 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Gerald,

You have the Windows Live Mail and the Windows Mail switched around in their
explanations.

The fact is, Windows Mail is the mail application that most resembles
Outlook Express, and aside from the relatively few differences I mentioned
in my previous post, all methods for accessing one's mail is exactly like
Outlook Express.

Windows Live Mail is also accessible, however, because of the ribbon
interface in place of the traditional menu bar, it's a bit more difficult to
use, not because it's inaccessible, but because there's a steep learning
curve.

An example is the fact that one can not simple press the alt key to get to
the menu with the application's options and accounts settings, one has to
press the hotkey of alt+F, which will open up the menu in question.

Simply pressing the alt key, as one used to do with traditional menus will
activate the ribbons, and moving your arrows around will get you to where
you want to go like the insert menu for inserting a picture, file or object
into the message, or the message window which will send the message and the
like, but, as I said, if you want to reach the options and account settings,
you must press the keystroke above.

I would also say that Windows Live Mail closely resembles Office Outlook in
functionality as it is able to decode calendar events and the like, and you
can actually make Windows Live Mail look a great deal like Outlook Express,
or more like Windows Mail, but again, the ribbons are a learning curve of
it's own.

I should also mention that while there are some registry keys one must add
to the registry, and if you're going to enter them manually, unless you're
experienced with editing the registry, then I would not recommend playing
around with the registry, especially if you don't have sighted assistance
when your computer doesn't want to boot fully into Windows. I do, however,
have a little package created by a gentleman named Ryan that includes the
files you need to copy into the Windows directory, the registry modification
files that automatically make the registry changes on it's own, and the
instructions, so if you're not upgrading for the simple fact that you don't
like playing around with the registry, then this package is a good thing for
you as there is nothing left to chance, as the registry files do the
modifications for you, and the instructions teach you how to back up the
registry in case a mistake is made.

In any case, I just thought I should point that out, other than that Gerald,
you pretty much hit the nail on the head in your descriptions. Smile.

Be advised, if you run the Win 7 registry tweak for Windows Mail as Scorpio
suggests, there are known issues where Windows 7 may fail to update certain

Hi Sugar,

Though not commonly known, there is a version of Outlook Express included
with Windows 7, just hidden from users so they can purchase Office
products for Outlook, or force people to use Windows Live Mail.

I have the tweaks, files and instructions uploaded to send space, but
should you take that plunge into Windows 7, you don't have to worry about
upgrading to another mail client, as the instructions are quite simple and
easy to go through.

I should also note that the main difference between Outlook Express and
Windows Mail is the inclusion of a Junk Mail folder, the ability to deal
with Spam messages more easily with the applications key, and a couple of
annoying bugs, though I'm not sure if this is a Windows issue, or a Jaws
issue.

The first bug is that the auto complete feature of Windows Mail is hit or
miss.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the addresses do auto complete, but Jaws isn't
reporting the completed address, so you're left wondering if it's going to
the proper address.

The second bug is the fact that when using your arrow keys to go through
the folder list on the left-hand side of the screen, should you come
across a folder containing saved messages in it, Jaws automatically moves
focus to the message list from the folder list.

It doesn't matter whether the messages are unread or not, and you're never
sure how many messages you have that are unread in that folder or what, as
you never get a chance to listen to Jaws read out the entire folder name
and unread messages as it did in Outlook Express. This is especially the
case if you have message rules implemented, and you have your messages
sorted by subject words and if the messages go into their own folders.

Other than that, Windows Mail is exactly like Outlook Express, with a
couple of tweaks here and there.

I also don't know if Freedom Scientific has stopped supporting Windows
mail, but Eric can speak to that should he decide it's warranted.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Cost of upgrading jaws?

2013-02-24 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Gerald,
Your close, and this is why there is so much confusion.
Microsoft in their infinite wisdom continues to give some of their products
similar names.
Windows Mail, was introduced in Vista, as a replacement for Outlook Express,
and that was the end of it.
Windows Live Mail, has been around awhile, and will work with any version of
Windows from at least XP and up.
Windows Live Mail, or more commonly referred to as "WLM" apparently is
doable,
although I haven't seen any guides for the 2012 version yet.
The rest, you certainly covered. smile

As an inveterate XP user, let me see if I understand all the accessible
email clients that work with Windows 7 and 8.

1. Windows Live Mail: Introduced in Vista, it is most similar to Outlook
Express, but was dropped in Windows 7, which does not come with any email
client of its own. But apparently, it can be made to work with Windows 7
with a few registry tweaks that should not be attempted by the timid or
faint of heart.

2. Windows Mail: Not to be confused with the similar-sounding Windows Live
Mail above, it works with Windows 7 and 8, but is not nearly as accessible
or easy to use as the former.

3. Mail: Windows 8 supposedly comes with an email client simply called
Mail, but nobody seems to know much about it.

4. Thunderbird: Not to be confused with the Ford sports coupe of the same
name, an email client developed by Mozilla, the Firefox folks, that is
supposed to be compatible with XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

5. Edora: An older email client that is no longer supported but still
favored by some JAWS users that works with XP and Windows 7

6. Outlook: the email client that comes bundled with MS Office, it is
compatible with JAWS and works with all versions of Windows.

7. Outlook Express: still a favorite with XP users because of its
simplicity and ease of use, but does not work with higher versions of
Windows.

Okay, have I cleared up the confusion or merely made it worse? Have I
missed anything?

To be clearer: Windows Mail is the Windows Vista mail client. Windows
Live Mail is the windows 7 mail client. Two different clients. I don't
know if the outlook Express tweak will work on Windows7, as it was
designed for windows Vista. and the modern Windows Live Mail is ribbons

I would very much like the link to the Firefox 16.
As to the statement made that there is not much difference between
accessibility with IE 9 and FF I have found many. Just the other day I
tried to sign up for the free samples on doctoroz.com and there was no
space to fill in any info with IE 9 but when I copied the link and opened
it in FF the form fields were there and I was able to sign up.
Expressscripts.com is another that I could not sign in on IE 9. Also the
FIOS website, the Lookout.com and I think certain pages of the Bank of
America site. Those are just the ones I remember having problems with
recently using IE 9 that were accessible with FF..
Mostly I don't compare page by page unless I know ahead of time that there
is something that is supposed to be there and isn't on IE 9.
I would think that Jaws should put more effort into making IE more
accessible or at least fix this freezing problem with Firefox.
As for using version 3.5 of Firefox. it seems to me that that would really
be a security risk rather like using IE 6 or 7.
I really would like to switch to Firefox for my default. Maybe the
version 16 would work with Jaws 14.

Thanks,
Sherrie

First of all, no need to reboot your computer when firefox crashes. Hit
ctrl-alt-escape, find the firefox in applications, hit the
applications/context key on it and choose end task.

Second of all, having used both firefox and ie9, I'd say that ie9 gives
more information on webpages where there is any difference at all. I
have yet to find one that is more accessible with firefox. If you are
having a lot of crashes with firefox as your default browser, caused by
clicking on links, you might want to change to ie as the default. You
can download ff17.x off of mozilla's ftp site, you have to dig for it
though. If it weren't for a couple of plugins that allow me to block
ads and control what javascript I wish to allow, along with how it deals
with rss, I'd use internet explorer instead of firefox. I've used
firefox for many years, so I don't say that lightly. I have yet to try
the release version of ff19, but the beta crashed just like ff18 did.

On 2/21/2013 05:49, Sharon Gosling wrote:

I guess this sounds like I just have to put up with the IE 9 as a
default since most of the freezes occur when clicking links in email.
One I especially remember is a Kim Komando page that led to another page
and then the youtube link yesterday. There were others I remember from
Lookout Mobile Security. Can't remember them all.
The most aggravating part is to have to restart the computer to shut
down Firefox. The computer doesn't freeze, just Firefox.
I could still use more advice if anyone has any ideas. I know there are
many avid Firefox users on this list.
I presume that to roll back to Firefox 17 I would have to remove FF 19.
But where would I get 17. And is 17 the best version for Jaws users? In
old emails I had read about really low versions but it seems like they
would have many security holes as newer versions of browsers generally
have better security.

Using a different link for youtube would not help me since I never go to
youtube and search for videos. I click links from friends that take me
to interesting youtube videos.
If I keep IE 9 as the default I may never realize how much more
accessible the page might be on Firefox. Now, I only try Firefox when I
know there are form fields or other information I know should be there.
I imagine there is a great deal more information that I don't even
realize I am missing using IE 9.
If others experience similar problems then perhaps I should contact Jaws
or Firefox about it.
Actually I was amazed at how inferior IE 9 was using Jaws.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Cost of upgrading jaws?

2013-02-24 Thread Flor Lynch

To be clearer: Windows Mail is the Windows Vista mail client. Windows
Live Mail is the windows 7 mail client. Two different clients. I don't
know if the outlook Express tweak will work on Windows7, as it was
designed for windows Vista. and the modern Windows Live Mail is ribbons
rather than menus.

Hi Sugar,

Though not commonly known, there is a version of Outlook Express
included with Windows 7, just hidden from users so they can purchase
Office products for Outlook, or force people to use Windows Live Mail.

I have the tweaks, files and instructions uploaded to send space, but
should you take that plunge into Windows 7, you don't have to worry
about upgrading to another mail client, as the instructions are quite
simple and easy to go through.

I should also note that the main difference between Outlook Express
and Windows Mail is the inclusion of a Junk Mail folder, the ability
to deal with Spam messages more easily with the applications key, and
a couple of annoying bugs, though I'm not sure if this is a Windows
issue, or a Jaws issue.

The first bug is that the auto complete feature of Windows Mail is hit
or miss.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the addresses do auto complete, but Jaws isn't
reporting the completed address, so you're left wondering if it's
going to the proper address.

The second bug is the fact that when using your arrow keys to go
through the folder list on the left-hand side of the screen, should
you come across a folder containing saved messages in it, Jaws
automatically moves focus to the message list from the folder list.

It doesn't matter whether the messages are unread or not, and you're
never sure how many messages you have that are unread in that folder
or what, as you never get a chance to listen to Jaws read out the
entire folder name and unread messages as it did in Outlook Express.
This is especially the case if you have message rules implemented, and
you have your messages sorted by subject words and if the messages go
into their own folders.

Other than that, Windows Mail is exactly like Outlook Express, with a
couple of tweaks here and there.

I also don't know if Freedom Scientific has stopped supporting Windows
mail, but Eric can speak to that should he decide it's warranted.

Hope this helps.

Scorpio

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox freezing with Jaws 14

2013-02-24 Thread Sharon Gosling

I would very much like the link to the Firefox 16.
As to the statement made that there is not much difference between
accessibility with IE 9 and FF I have found many. Just the other day I tried
to sign up for the free samples on doctoroz.com and there was no space to
fill in any info with IE 9 but when I copied the link and opened it in FF
the form fields were there and I was able to sign up. Expressscripts.com is
another that I could not sign in on IE 9. Also the FIOS website, the
Lookout.com and I think certain pages of the Bank of America site. Those
are just the ones I remember having problems with recently using IE 9 that
were accessible with FF..
Maybe the version
16 would work with Jaws 14.

Thanks,

Definitely happens with youtube, that happens with all screen readers
and flash. You could try the html5 version of youtube at
www.youtube.com/html5. As far as the other freezes go, I've found that
the best I could do was to go back to ff17 and force it to not update
automatically. I guess I should try out 19 to find out if it is any
better, but I kinda hate to break what is working.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Cost of upgrading jaws?

2013-02-24 Thread David Ferrin
Actually it is called windows mail which was introduced in Vista and then
promptly abandon. Yes it is almost the same as outlook express and it can be
enabled in windows 7 the fact is to do it requires adding a few keys to your
registry and replacing a DLL file or so. I have done it and the files ETC
are still on my server I must point out a something. You must have service
pack 1 installed prior to enabling windows mail to play it safe. To be
honest so far that is the current stumbling block that I am aware but that
does not mean there won't be future issues to come.

A word to the wise and like the note on the server says "this should not be
done by a beginner".

SUgar and Scorpio and all: I'm nervous,, too, but hearing that Outlook
Express is included in win 7 is easing my mind a bit. I don't do
complicated things on my computer so I don't need any bells and whistles.
However, if msoft is going to cease supporting xp, I'll want to upgrade my
operating system. I actually have jaws' last two upgrades but am still
using v 12 because it works best.
I am dependent on all of you to give guidance since I do not know anyone
locally who understands a thing about jaws or etc. Maybe I will just wait
and see, hoping I don't pass up an opportunity to buy win 7 and get shoved
into 8 or something else that I'll hate. Thanks. Marilyn
