Hi, that's up to you if you want Jaws 15, but however, if you want to try out
the new vocalizer expressive voices, you need Jaws 15 to run it. I don't know
if this is true, but i've heard that Jaws 15 won't support the older vocalizer
direct voices.

Hope I helped.

[JAWS-Users] Urgent, After Long Term Use Jaws Refusing to Authorize

2013-09-15 Thread J.Cyr
I'm running Jaws 11 on Windows XP, and haven't had a problem with it, until
now. I had to disconnect my power supply this evening and when it was
reconnected it wanted to be authorized. I followed the steps (tried every
method more then once) and get a message about not having a licence. To put it
mildly this is idiotic, I have a licence and key, it was running six hours ago
as it had been for over a year. Anyone know what I can do? All the
information Jaws is looking for Must already be on my hard drive! Because
waiting until Monday to deal with Freedom Scientific is not a happy thought,
... having to restart the machine every forty minutes complicates life no end.
Not to mention my power supply issue has not been resolved yet and every
restart is a breath holding event.

Thanks for any advice,
Sincerely,
Joy

Good Evening all,
Well first do some maintence like run your anti virus and run a difrag and
do a restart.
Go to the desktop and press J and press enter.

Press the alt key and right arrow to help and then down arrow through all
the menu options.
There you'll find the authorizing, update etc.

Your jaws 11 version should end with these numbers 476, if not upgraded it.

Yes, Jaws 15 is necessary for the newer voices. If I recall correctly, the
change in pitch when reading a character that has been capitalized is the
only change Jaws15 made to speech. here is the direct download link for the
FSCast podcast describing new Jaws15 features:

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows defender vs. super antivirus

2013-09-15 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi George and others,

Unless Super AntiSpyware has vastly improved in the last couple of years, a
currently updated Malwarebytes pro is a much better solution. Windows
defender does not appear to run registry scans which Malwarebytes Pro will
do. For best protection, I suggest one uses MSE and Malwarebytes pro both
running simultaneously. Adding more than one malware utility will not
necessarily result in better malware scans and can possibly create conflicts
in that the same files will be scanned at the same time. You also don't want
to run your processor more or harder than it has to run as you can use some
of those processing cycles for other tasks.

2013-09-15 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi,

Though always good suggestions, the maintenance suggestions below are
mutually exclusive of symptoms described. Try unloading and reloading jaws
as well as a reboot to see if that authorization prompt disappears though
original author appears to have already tried this step. I think the only
solution will end up being a call to FS tech support as you almost certainly
ate through your allotted Jaws keys.

You are given a set amount of authorization keys, and if you use all 3? of

have them reset your installation keys.

Unfortunately, the process goes as follows... You will first have to call FS

for jaws press 2.
They will then ask you to call or they will transfer you to a second number

You could also try entering your 20-digit registration key character by
character if it is not automatically presented to you.

By stating disconnect my power supply do you mean you unplugged the
desktop from the wall, or do you mean you had to disconnect the power supply
unit it from your motherboard? If you disconnected from the wall then no
problem. If you meant you disconnected it from your motherboard then this is
a problem as each time you internally disconnect and reconnect your power
supply, this may eat up your jaws licenses. This is a real headache as I had

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows defender vs. super antivirus

2013-09-15 Thread Joseph FreeTech
An important fact to consider when using these free options are the
following which I copied and pasted from the Super AntiSpyware website:
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition does not include real-time blocking or
scheduled scanning.

No real-time blocking/scanning is similar to not having any malware
protection of this type at all. This means that when you visit a website
with code running in the background that can infect your computer with a
virus, you will not know that you've been infected until you run a malware
scan which can be days or weeks after the infection. Since you might already
be infected, the removal of malware might be impossible depending on the
aggressiveness of the malware. In short, no real-time scanning is a very bad
idea. George's Malwarebytes Pro is running in real-time and is a very
effective and very accessible malware utility.

No, I suggested the person run MSE antivirus and Malwarebytes (2 utilities
simultaneously), and not MSE and malwarebytes and Super AntiSpyware (3
utilities including 1 antivirus and 2 malware prevention utilities). I
happen to know for 100% fact that MSE and Malwarebytes can exist
simultaneously as I run this configuration on my desktops and netbook. This
information can be found on the Malwarebytes tech support forum. There are
also other ways to insure there are no conflicts when running both scans at

close attention to the distinction between an antivirus utility and what is

You are given a set amount of authorization keys, and if you use all 3? of
them within 3 months or 3 years, you will eventually have to call FS and
have them reset your installation keys.

Unfortunately, the process goes as follows... You will first have to call FS
tech support and explain the problem to them: fs Tech Support (727) 803 8600
for jaws press 2.
They will then ask you to call or they will transfer you to a second number
which will help you authorize Jaws. the number is: (727) 803 8015.

This is a real headache as I had
to go through this authorization key mess with Tech support and FS customer
service--this-is-not-pleasant.

It is time to insure you have a backup of all your important files, so
please backup as it might turn out to be a bad hard drive preventing your
computer from powering up.

MSE and super anti spyware will work together as well. If memory serves the
rule of thumb is one antivirus along with one anti spyware will work but no
other combination is possible or at the very lease advisable.

The fact is the amount of possible combinations is quite staggering with all of
the available products on the market. Personally I run MSE along with super
antispyware with a good level of success.

Thanks Rick I did send in a request, like the rest of Freedom Scientific that
won't help until business hours. Its lovely how we aren't supposed to
experience any Jaws problems on the weekend.

Joseph, I'd have said I turned it off if that is what I meant, I had the power
supply disconnected and removed from the machine because it is experiencing
problems. I/my tech is dealing with the basic computer issues, we were just
rather taken aback when things were put together again (unfortunately
temporarily) and Jaws pulled this out. I really do Not understand why
disconnecting the mother board eats a key, ... and I'm really unimpressed.
That said I had not used all three keys so this is adding insult to injury.
Wouldn't be quite so bad if it hadn't happened on a Saturday.

Anyway, thanks for the explanations.

[JAWS-Users] signature line dilemma

2013-09-15 Thread Lenny McHugh
I do not understand in windows live mail for a new message the signature is
placed without blank lines. Now If I reply to a message and instruct the
signature to be added it puts several blank lines before and double spaces
the information. Then again several blank lines are inserted. It all comes

Re: [JAWS-Users] Urgent, After Long Term Use Jaws Refusing to Authorize

2013-09-15 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Regarding Jaws keys eaten up... it might be that your tech plugged in the
Sata cables in different slots than their original locations for the same
hardware, which changed the jaws authorization snapshot of your computer
configuration in the process. Jaws will not require authorization if you
change an optical drive or maybe even if you add a card reader because the
SATA cable was not unplugged from the motherboard, but it looks like it will
chew up a license if you add or change your ram configuration, if you change
your hard drive of course, and if you change any other essential piece of
hardware. You may already have the knowledge, but in the event that ou
don't, please let me know and I'll help you shop around for a new power
supply. Smile.

Thanks Rick I did send in a request, like the rest of Freedom Scientific
that won't help until business hours. Its lovely how we aren't supposed to
experience any Jaws problems on the weekend.

Joseph, I'd have said I turned it off if that is what I meant, I had the
power supply disconnected and removed from the machine because it is
experiencing problems. I/my tech is dealing with the basic computer issues,
we were just rather taken aback when things were put together again
(unfortunately temporarily) and Jaws pulled this out. I really do Not
understand why disconnecting the mother board eats a key, ... and I'm really
unimpressed. That said I had not used all three keys so this is adding
insult to injury. Wouldn't be quite so bad if it hadn't happened on a
Saturday.

Anyway, thanks for the explanations.

Sincerely,
Joy

Friends, I'm having well maybe not a major issue, but it's annoying
nonetheless.
what I do is I start up at the top of my inbox with the home key then
I delete to the end.
However, at this time, when I delete either way, jaws will for some
reason say letters at the end of either a message or when i delte in
caps letters like this, R D or whatever.

I'm using the beta release.
any suggestions?

An important fact to consider when using these free options are the
following which I copied and pasted from the Super AntiSpyware website:
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition does not include real-time blocking or
scheduled scanning.

No real-time blocking/scanning is similar to not having any malware
protection of this type at all. This means that when you visit a website
with code running in the background that can infect your computer with a
virus, you will not know that you've been infected until you run a malware
scan which can be days or weeks after the infection. Since you might already
be infected, the removal of malware might be impossible depending on the

If you have more than one speech synth on your computer that JAWS can
use, it will appear in the Select a Profile dialogue - control insert s.
(For example, SAPI5.) Select a synthesizer other than eloquence, and try
it out on apostrophes/quotes. (Incidentally, I changed my apostrophe
sign to always read as quote, as this is the most common occurrence of
the sign. Also, apostrophe has four syllables! Takes a long time to, uh,
say! that may be a two- or three-step process. One still gets the
nuisance of JAWS pausing in a word and saying didn quote t where it
would have formerly said didn apostrophe t. Half-a-dozen of one and 5-½
of the other, like.

Hi Susie Q,

Follow the steps below but, in the steps below the, apostrophy, is
used as

the example. In your case insert quotes for apostrophy.

You can change how Jaws speaks the apostrophy in the Settings Centter
default all applications by doing the following:

1. Press Insert + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard to
open the

Settings Center, press, Control, shift, + D, to open default all
applications.
2. Arrow down to, Punctuation closed press right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to customize punctuation press the spacebar to open.
Don't
press enter here, if you press enter instad of the spacebar, the
Settings

Center
will close.
4.A. When making changes in the customize punctuation list, if you do
not

want
Jaws to speak/recognize a particular punctuation mark you want to
choose the

all selection. You will have 4 radio buttons to arrow up or down
through. They are none, some, most, all. In these selections they
work
backwards than what you would think. For example; If you choose
none

for the dollar sign, Jaws will speak / recognize every dollar sign in
whatever you are reading. On the other hand, if you choose the all

radio button, Jaws will not speak / recognize any dollar signs.

4.B. After you pressed the spacebar on customize punctuation, you are
now in

a list of punctuation marks. Arrow down the list and when
you have the punctuation mark you want to change highlighted, tab 1
time to

the radio buttons that I mentioned earlier.
5. Keeping in mind what I mentioned earlier about these choices
working

backwards, select the box in this list, in your case not wanting any
apostrophy's spoken, choose the all button.
6. Now, if you want to make a change to another punctuation mark,
shift tab
back to the list and highlight a different punctuation mark, tab back
to the

radio buttons and select the box you prefer.
7. After you are done making your changes tab to okay and press the
spacebar.
8. Tab to apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar
to save

your changes close the Settings Center.

Now, I hope that you are not as confused as I am after typing all of
this.

LOL Hope this has helped.

Take care.
Mike

HI Lenny,

Yes, I understand. Smile. I will suggest you run both though as any modern
computer such as a Win8 can handle this configuration. You will also be much
more protected if you run both simultaneously. MSE (now defender in Win8) is
not very good at scanning one's registry. On the other hand, Malwarebytes
Pro is very, very good at scanning one's registry, and it is a very fast
malware scanner.

Hi Kevin,

When you come across a situation where you are having trouble reading the
screen during an installation, try the following:
1. use your jaws cursor to read the entire screen and use numpad related
left and right-click keys.
2. Use the Jaws OCR tools: press JawsKey+spacebar then press letter o then
press letter w. You can now use the numpad left and right-click commands.

I don't want to pile on or anything, but I too dislike this ILM system. I
especially dislike that the person you have to call to reauthorize jaws via
update of your license will ask you why you need the licenses then they take
Note of this on their computers as if you are being tracked. It feels like
you are asking your mommy for permission to use something for which you paid
an immense amount of money. Smile.

Hi George,

Regarding your statements below, if you mean that downloading the free
version of Malwarebytes takes you to a CNet download page, well, this is how
this process works. It seems a bit invasive, but I assure you it is not;
especially since you are taken from the Malwarebytes website to the CNet
download page. If you'd like I can download the Malwarebytes trial and
Dropbox it to you. You can also try installing a copy of your Malwarebytes
Pro on a second machine. I believe Malwarebytes allows for this as I've only
Purchased a single license and have installed the pro version on 3
computers. I'm assuming if I were doing something wrong I would be asked for
a second and third license key but the process completes problem free. The
worst that can happen is that the install won't go through.

2013-09-15 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Oh yeah, I forgot... On Win8, Defender is always running. It feels a bit
strange as we've always had to do all kinds of configurating of an antivirus
and now its simply built in on Win8 computers. Smile. To test it, simply
pop in a thumb drive then go to computer, right click (Shift F10) on the
thumb drive and choose scan or something to that effect. At some point you
should see a screen conveying scan progress. By the way, if you are already
running Windows Defender, you are actually running a renamed MSE, so if
you've installed MSE on top of Defender then you might end up having
problems.

power supply in hand so I'll let him get on with it.

I always call there free line. I don't be leave in paying for them to
waste my time racking up the money. I paid for the program the least
they can do is support it for the prices we pay!

set things up so ONLY they can solve) on weekends and in the

Tim, I am a hundred percent with you, and desperately wish I could let them
pay! It truly adds insult to injury to have to pay the long distance charges.
However, (least the last time I checked) they are not so kind as to offer a
toll free number to Canadians. It really rubbed me the wrong way when the last
time I spent about forty minutes playing tag with them and finally finding
someone to help (he was really good) I found out that while I was racking up
the U. S. long distance he was working a couple hours away from me in Toronto.
No direct line there though.

Joseph I'm with you, ... I won't repeat the rant I just gave to my poor long
suffering tech (who's opinion of FS is equally unprintable, and I know, we are
all supposed to pretend there a mag company on this list), but honestly there
just can't be that many people out there who would want to pirate Jaws in the
first place!

Also they should make this stupidity of hard ware switches using up keys
clear. When I was trained I was told you installed one on a machine, end of
story. (Of course in those days you also got five not three.) I've told two
techs to date both of whom had my ignorant reaction, but its already on the
hard drive, why would disconnecting the power supply make a difference? Makes
no sense! But then neither does a company with this many customers who doesn't
offer tech support on the weekends! Even my tiny internet provider is open
weekends, and they've got a staff of twenty, maybe.

Well this has really mucked up my day/weekend, ... my apologies for the
complaining, and thanks for the help in understanding what is happening.

Sincerely,
Joy
