[JAWS-Users] A PDF question
Hi, listers, I'm using JAWS 15.9023 with Windows 7. I have an ongoing issue with PDF files, which will only display the top (address and menu bars) and bottom, but none of the actual, interior content of the window or file. Even this minimal amount of information is all I can get using the JAWS cursor; the PC cursor just registers the PDF file as blank. I've tried using ShiftF10, or the numpad slash, to simulate a right mouse click, and this is all I get. These things used to work consistently when I had WindowEyes years ago, but I've had this problem with PDFs, either downloaded or e-mailed documents, for some time. At first I thought it was a function of some corrupted files that I was never able to delete, that seemed to be effecting the functioning of Adobe Reader here at my worksite. But we have recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7, and changed from Adobe to FoxIt. (I admit to not knowing much about this program, but it should have allowed the document I linked to to be read eas ily in a straightforward way.) I had a sighted IT person here at work observing this, and he's usually pretty aware of how my setup is used and its capabilities, and neither of us has any idea how to resolve this. It's actually been more than a year since I've been able to get JAWS to read or access PDFs at all and, as I've tried to describe it, this seems to be a more general and consistent problem than I thought. Sorry for the long walk through all of this; my basic question is, am I missing some obvious steps that will get these PDFs to display properly. Is there a setting that needs to be changed, engaged or taken away? It's almost as though any files of this type are literally blocked, and since it is so consistent, I'm hoping the solution is something basic and obvious. I meant to add the specific information that, while using the JAWS cursor, down-arrowing took it directly from things at the top, with one more keystroke, to 64.22% at the bottom. I just rmembered that, even when not reading PDFs, a similar thing often happens when I'm trying to use the JAWS cursor to read other parts of a webpage; it will say 100% and Done, at the bottom, but again, none of the actual content from within the window (or maybe frame would be better) is shown. So, this is even more basic; why is my JAWS not displaying things either within or around a window, which, I always thought, is part of what it's meant to do? If this is covered in some recent postings, I apologize; I try not to look at the daily digests until I'm done with work tasks, so I tend to get behind. I'd really appreciate any help you can give me. Andy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] A PDF question
Hi Again Andy, Here are steps for Adobe settings changes for Adobe X XI: Adobe Reader X: You need to disable protected view first to get it to work well with Jaws. Do the following: 1. From either your desktop or start menu, press enter on Adobe. The Adobe window is now open, press control + K, to open preferences. Another way to get to preferences is after pressing enter on the Adobe shortcut, press Alt + E, for the edit menu, arrow up to preferences, press enter. 3. When preferences opens you will be in a tree view and should be on the General page, if not arrow up or down until you have General highlighted. It is #4 of 29. Tab until you find a checkbox called enable protected mode at startup, uncheck it, choose yes on the warning you will get to continue. You need to look at 2 more settings so, tab until you have General highlighted again. 4. With General highlighted, press the letter I, until you have Internet highlighted. 5. Tab to, Display PDF in browser, if this box is checked press the spacebar to uncheck it. 6. Tab to connection speed combobox, arrow up / down for the setting that best matches your Internet Providers speed. 7. Tab to the okay button, press enter to close preferences save your changes, press Alt + F4 to close Adobe. Adobe XI: Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the consequences of unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to say. 1. After opening Adobe from your desktop or start menu shortcut, go into preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view. If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below Security. Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck but, optional: Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked. Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked. Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other changes first. 2. Launch the Edit menu, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu and open it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on Next in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to the check box labeled Display PDF documents in the web browser and make sure it is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay button, press enter to save your changes close. HTH Take Care. Re: [JAWS-Users] OUTLOOK EXPRESS AND WINDOWS 7
John, Giving you the respect you ask, but you are only correct as far as what Microsoft provides with Windows 7. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, and I am also running Outlook Express that is available for Windows 7 and 8 from the RunAsXp.com website. I also have the separate spellchecker that works with OE. It performs and behaves just like the original Outlook Express, except it doesn't bug you to compact. The version I have was developed in May 2014, but Rafael is supposed to be coming out with another version soon. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. [JAWS-Users] Issue with Jaws and unread count of messages in Outlook 2010 and Office 365
Hello list, Yesterday I finally got around to linking my Office 365 account to my Office 2010 on my Windows 7 laptop. The process was easy enough and I was able to add my exchange accounts to Outlook 2010. Now however, I am finding that Jaws no longer reads the number of unread messages when bringing up the Go to Folder dialog box with the control+y command. The only reason I even use the control+y command is that with the JFW 15 release, Jaws was no longer announcing the unread count in the navigation treeview. The control+y keystroke wasnt an ideal solution, but it worked. Im guessing this new problem has to do with what I did yesterday, but dont know what it possibly could be. Sometimes, if I know theres an unread message, Ill go to that inbox (I have 6 different accounts configured) then bring up the dialog with the ctl+y and Jaws will indeed say the number of unread items. But, if I cycle through the other inboxes or folders for that matter that also have unread items, Jaws may speak the information once, but after going through all inboxes that one time, no more. Not even the inbox with the unread messages I started at. The status bar (insert+pg down) doesnt read the number of messages in the highlighted folder anymore either. I need access to the additional exchange accounts for my business and the Outlook web appis a nightmare with Jaws. So just getting rid of the exchange accounts isnt really an option. I didn right FS about this earlier today, but as its the weekend, Im not really expecting to hear back from them until at least the beginning of next week. Any ideas? Hi Kimsan, Thank you very much for your reply but, I think I found the problem. If I click on this link from an OE message or, from a Webpage entry go button in this identitties address book the find dialogs won't work. But, if I copy the link from the address book entry paste it into IE10's address bar both find dialogs work just fine! Interesting as to why you would get 2 different reactions by using the same exact link but, accessing it using 3 different methods. This must be a little bug in the OE6 for Win7 application. [JAWS-Users] Excel 2007 2013: Reading Cells w/ Large Amounts of Data
Hello, I use Excel 2007 and Excel 2013 with the latest version of JAWS 15. How can I change some JAWS setting, use JAWS differently or change Excel to read the entire contents of each cell as I arrow around in the spreadsheet? Reason: Some cells have many lines of text, with possible line feeds so the text looks appealing to sighted users. At this point I can't even tell what cells have extra text I am missing with JAWS. I was just in a conference call reviewing the spreadsheet and the sighted users could see more text then I could is how I found out about this issue. Thank you for any help you can provide. Kind regards, Bill For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
