[JAWS-Users] Missing Files

2014-11-14 Thread Scott Duck
Hi Everyone,

I have a little mystery here. I hope the list can help me to solve it.

I have a HP Envy, running Windows 8.1 and JAWS 16.

I just had about 50 or so files to just up and disappear. The actual
disappearance isn't a big deal. All of the files were MP3s, ripped from CD.
I back up regularly and I just restored them from the latest backup.
However, it worries me that they disappeared in the first place. As far as
I can tell, the files were not hidden, they were just gone. Norton gives me
a clean bill of health and, anyway, I wouldn't think that a virus would mess
with only 50 user files out of 50,000. All of these particular files were
ripped on the same day, about six months ago. As they were all ripped back
to back and my HD has very low fragmentation, I assume that they were stored
roughly sequentially on the HD. This has me wondering if I have a HD sector
going bad, although the Windows disk checking tool shows that the HD is OK.

I did update to Windows 8.1 a couple weeks ago but I wouldn't think that the
update would have anything to do with this.

Seems to me that the most likely explanation is a HD starting to go south.
I've been planning on switching to a SSD anyway but didn't want to spend the
money just yet.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what the problem may be or how I can
investigate further?

Thanks,

Scott Duck

[JAWS-Users] JFW 16 and tables

2014-11-14 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

With Jaws 16, I am finding that the table interaction is a much more tedious
one than with prior versions of JFW in that Jaws 16 treats many more
elements on a webpage or HTMl formatted email like a table. Thus, one has to
press the navigation key “T” a whole lot more times to get to the same place
where maybe one or two times would accomplish the same.

That and now, there seems to be a blank space between every line of text
when arrowing up and down. This wasn’t the case before.

I’m doubting it, but does anyone know of any settings to make JFW treat
tables as in JFW 15 and earlier?

Thanks,

I should add, Kathy, that Vista will have security updates into at least
mid-2016. Windows 7 is until early 2020 as I recall, and with the market
penetration of Windows 7, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it got extended
as XP's life cycle got extended.

Next year, we'll see Windows 10 get released. I assume the next release of
Jaws will have the ability to work with the new features in Windows 10. It
should be nicer, from what I've read, than Windows 8. So, you can always
save money and use your current laptop and get something newer in a year or
so that will support all the features of the newer Windows including
touchscreen gestures; which would not be available at all on your older
machine.

I do some tech work, unless you have a copy of Windows 7 32-bit already and
just want to do it, sure. But, it isn't worth it, otherwise.

If you need to buy a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, you can find
them for $90 on Amazon. I don't think you can do an in-place upgrade with
an OEM copy. So, you'll need to backup your laptop, then re-format and
install Windows 7.

If you are going to pay a tech to do this, you're probably looking at a
couple hours.

You'd be better off buying a refurbished Windows 7 Home Premium laptop.
I've seen some for $150 or so and possibly higher if you want better specs.

You can see if your laptop will run Windows 7 by running the Microsoft
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor which you can dowload at
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20

It will show you hardware specs, what if any software drivers may not work
in Windows 7.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

[JAWS-Users] JFW 16 crashing with DuckDuckGo

2014-11-14 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

An odd behavior I’ve been experiencing with JFW 16.

In Firefox, I have DuckDuckGo as my default search engine. When I want to
search for something, I’ll open up the search edit box (control+e) and type
in my search term. I’ll then be taken to DuckDuckGo’s webpage with the
search results, but then either Jaws will crash right away or right after I
press “h” to jump to the first heading. So far, the improved recovery
feature in JFW 16 has worked flawlessly and Jaws does come back every single
time, but still… After Jaws comes back, I have no problem moving around the
DuckDuckGo results webpage.

Also, if I do the exact same search with a different engine, be it Google,
Bing, etc. I don’t’ have this crashing problem.

I’m using Firefox 33.0.2.

Is anyone else dealing with this issue?

The way I made it work was to separate the letters. That would be in the

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Default JDF Dictionary Manager

2014-11-14 Thread Mike B.
Hi John,

Yes, capitalizing with spaces between letters that is how I got it to read
correctly you are correct in Users / Name Folder / App Data / Roming, nvda
is in lower case letters. I do use capital letters so it will read in a
little different pitch. Thank you very much for your reply.

  Mike,
The way I made it work was to separate the letters. That would be in the
  correction field.
In that way, it would read N V D A

In my system however, if you lock your Caps lock key down and type it in,
it
  reads just fine.
I'll bet that the actual logo isn't in caps.

Why not just cfall FS directly and inquire? Or, visit their website and

Hi listers, especially those at FS or any dealers that might be able to
help? What's the cost of upgrading my Jaws license (it's serial number
23456) from English to Spanish (by Spanish I mean the menus, interface etc
all in Spanish)?
Back in 2005, I was informed the price would be $470? Is this still the
same? or is it worthless and buying a new Jaws license in spanish? Thanks
for info.

In all the years that I have been installing new versions of JAWS on the

comes from, but it is always in the edit box when the reauthorization
starts.
